THE BIGGER PICTURE
Trossard was an unused substitute during the Gunners’ 1-0 opening day victory over Manchester United with the left side of midfield being filled by Gabriel Martinelli. But his performances for Arteta’s side, as they fell just short of winning the title last season, have earned him an improved deal. He has bagged 28 goals in 124 games and has consistently shown his all-round ability, playing across multiple frontline positions.

WHAT NEXT FOR TROSSARD?
Trossard picked up a thigh injury during the pre-season defeat by Tottenham, but is available for selection to face Leeds on Saturday. Arteta has made clear he remains a key part of the club’s plans as they bid to end the run of second-place finishes in the Premier League and leap the final hurdle in the Champions League.

Os caras me batendo igual criança. Eu apanhando igual criança. Parecia que fui eu que fiz aquilo. Estou com uma mágoa muito grande, mas quarta-feira isso passa. Quando eu tiver treinando com 3 graus, já passa.

AC Milan continue to search for suitable profiles to bolster their attack ahead of the 2025-26 season, having failed to qualify for the Champions League. According to a report from , Milan have established contacts with Monaco striker Embolo, after finding out that there are a lot of complexities in an operation for Juventus star Vlahovic.

Per Fabrizio Romano, Monaco will not stand in the way of Embolo, having already made a pact with the Swiss international last summer. The player rejected advances from Turkish side Besiktas. Milan are keeping tabs on the player and have opened talks to sign him, with the Ligue 1 side setting a €15 million (£13m/$17.5m) price tag.

Vlahovic remains Milan's primary candidate to bolster the frontline. Indeed, as per , Juventus are ready to cash in on Vlahovic and get his €12 million net salary off the books. The Bianconeri have already secured the signing of Jonathan David as a free agent and are expected to get in touch with Paris Saint-Germain over extending Randal Kolo Muani's stay in Turin.
The Serbian striker finds a move to Milan appealing, which will give him a chance to not only play for a historically big name in Europe but also allow him to reunite with Massimiliano Allegri. However, the financial aspect of the operation is proving to be a major deterrent in Milan's pursuit of the ex-Fiorentina man. report that Milan will only seriously make moves for Vlahovic if the 25-year-old demands a severance package from Juve, and if the striker would be happy to accept a salary of €6 million plus bonuses tied to winning the league and if he wins the top scorer award in Serie A.

The Dortmund defender didn’t sugarcoat the team's stalemate opener against Fluminense in the Club World Cup, saying the performance was “far too little” despite the poor pitch at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Notably, Sule was not the only player who criticised the conditions of the pitch. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel also voiced his concerns, claiming the ball wasn’t bouncing the way it usually does.

After a year of build-up, FIFA’s revamped Club World Cup has struggled to draw crowds, forcing the organisers to slash ticket prices to boost attendance. Besides the pitch conditions, several teams have voiced frustration over midday kick-offs in the hot U.S. summer. Earlier, PSG manager Luis Enrique blasted FIFA over the scheduling, calling the conditions unfit for elite-level football.
"The time slot is great for European audiences, but the teams are suffering. In terms of play, it's impossible to perform at a very high level for 90 minutes,” Enrique said after PSG's 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid.

Talking to the reporters after the game, Sule said: “We were very, very weak with the ball. We were aiming for much better. No excuses about the conditions, even though the pitch was pretty terrible. The ball didn't even bounce properly. But those are all such stupid excuses. It was simply far too little today. We have to blame ourselves for that to some extent. I still think everyone is up for this challenge. We simply have to bring more to the table for the second game and work on it. We've shown over the last month or two that we're capable of playing better football – but that doesn't count here anymore."

Bangladesh are writing off this ODI series defeat to Afghanistan as “two bad days”, according to Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The hosts were crushed by 142 runs as their recent ODI form deserted them, and Afghanistan went on to amass 331 by breaking a few records and seal their first series against the hosts. Mehidy said Bangladesh were “not worried” about the series loss and will plan better for the two big tournaments later in the year, the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup.”I think we had two bad days. We are not worried about it,” he said. “We can plan better for the Asia Cup and World Cup. We play to win every game. We will find out where we lack. I said in a press conference a little while ago that losing against Afghanistan won’t make us a bad side. One series can go bad.”We have a good record in the last three-four years. We finished in the top four in the ICC ODI Super League. I think we can overcome these mistakes from the past two games, and play much better in the Asia Cup and World Cup.”Related

Mehidy rejected the idea that Tamim Iqbal’s retirement and then the U-turn played any part in the defeat in the second ODI on Saturday.”Everyone was shocked with Tamim ‘s decision. Nobody expected it,” Mehidy said after the loss Chattogram. “It was a break that day and we had training yesterday. We prepared for this game. But that bad feeling was temporary.”Mehidy said that Bangladesh had fallen well behind in the match when they couldn’t stop the Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who scored 145 and 100 respectively, from adding a massive 256 in 36 overs.”We gave away 30-40 runs more [than we should have],” he said. “We weren’t organised enough as a bowling unit. If our top order also made runs and had a partnership going, we could have taken this game deep. It became hard when the top order fell [quickly]”.However, Bangladesh’s bowlers brought them into the contest despite the visitors being well on track to post even 400. They grabbed nine wickets in the last 14 overs, thus restricting Afghanistan to only 75 runs in the period. That was a significant slowdown, particularly when they were going at above ten runs an over in the six overs before Gurbaz’s dismissal in the 37th over. Mehidy said that Bangladesh’s decision to bowl was to give their batters the best batting conditions under lights at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.”We expected the wicket to play better at night,” he said. “We batted first in the first game [after losing the toss]. The wicket was slow. It kept low. It improved in the evening, so the captain and coach thought that if [on winning the toss in the second ODI] we bowled well up front and then batted in the second innings, things will be easy for us.”Bangladesh were a bit slow in their chase and stumbled to 28 for 3 in the powerplay. The remaining six wickets – Ebadot Hossain didn’t bat due to an injury – fell in clusters of three each, too. And once they were 72 for 6 in the 19th over, the game was all but done.
Bowler admits to rustiness after injury, but warns he’ll be ‘done’ if conditions are same all series
ESPNcricinfo staff23-Jun-2023James Anderson has admitted that the Edgbaston pitch for the first Ashes Test was “like kryptonite” for him, and warns that if the surfaces for the remaining four matches of the series prove to be similarly flat, then he will be “done”.Anderson, who turns 41 next month, returned the disappointing figures of 1 for 109 in 38 overs during Australia’s two-wicket win in the first Test, and was noticeably overlooked for the crucial new ball when England were striving for a breakthrough on the tense final afternoon. He was unlucky in his first spell of the second innings, when Usman Khawaja – Australia’s player of the match – edged at a catchable height past Jonny Bairstow in Anderson’s first over. But overall, he conceded that his body had felt rusty in his first outing since picking up a groin strain while playing for Lancashire in the County Championship last month.Related

“This is an Ashes series. It is a big deal,” Anderson wrote in his column in The Telegraph. “When you play on a flat pitch like the one at Edgbaston and take a wicket, a bit more emotion does come out because you have worked extra hard for it.”That pitch was like kryptonite for me. There was not much swing, no reverse swing, no seam movement, no bounce and no pace. I’ve tried over the years to hone my skills so I can bowl in any conditions but everything I tried made no difference. I felt like I was fighting an uphill battle. It’s a long series and hopefully, I can contribute at some point, but if all the pitches are like that I’m done in the Ashes series.”With Anderson below his best, England struggled for penetration at key moments at Edgbaston, and having encountered some difficulty in dislodging Ireland on the final day of their recent Test at Lord’s, there will doubtless be some temptation to bring in the extra pace of Mark Wood for next week’s second Test at the same venue.Anderson, however, is confident that he will be better for the game-time, regardless of his disappointing showing.”There was a bit of rustiness but I gave it everything I could,” he said. “Having played for a long time, I realise you can’t take wickets every game. Sometimes it is not your week. It felt like that for me. I know I wasn’t on top of my game this week. It was not my best performance. I know I have more to offer and contribute to the team.”The body felt quite good. There is some stiffness but I put that down to the unique conditions. We were running in on a very soft outfield then landing on a rock-hard pitch and that takes its toll on the body more than normal. All the bowlers were feeling that a bit.”Stuart Broad and Ollie Robinson led the line for England’s quicks at Edgbaston, with Robinson returning the commendable figures of 40.4-12-98-5 across the two innings. However, his performance was equally notable for his on-field run-in with Usman Khawaja, which has since developed into an ongoing feud with Australia’s media as a whole, following more outspoken comments in his column for Wisden.com.Anderson even stepped in to pull Robinson away from a contratemps with Khawaja in the second innings, but insisted in his column that he wouldn’t be encouraging him to tone down his attitude as the series progresses.”I don’t want Ollie to change,” Anderson said. “I like him getting fired up. He bowls better when he is in that mood. From personal experience, I know I bowl better when I am a bit more aggressive and intense.”I stepped in to chat to Ollie when he and Usman were having an exchange of views in the second innings. It was gentle stuff, they were just talking cricket.”Whenever I watched cricket as a kid I wanted to see bowlers fired up. It makes for better theatre and is a lot more enjoyable to watch. Everyone is just encouraged to be themselves in our team. Some people don’t like getting into a verbal battle. Some do. Robbo thrives on it.”
Sunderland are likely to miss out on the boat of automatic promotion up to the Premier League, but Regis Le Bris’ first season at the Black Cats helm will still be seen as a success at this point in time.
The Wearside outfit are very much comfortable occupying a playoff spot in the Championship, with the Frenchman on course to steer his high flyers to their 20th league win of the season if Sunderland can get the better of Preston North End on their own patch.
Sunderland manager RegisLeBris on the touchline
To pick up another three points, Le Bris will know he needs his main marksman Wilson Isidor to be firing on all cylinders, with the 24-year-old a revelation up top.
Isidor's heroics for Sunderland this season
There would have been a worry in the air when Isidor initially entered the building on loan from Zenit St. Petersburg, with Sunderland falling victim to a number of goal-shy centre-forwards last campaign in the form of Nazariy Rusyn and Mason Burstow.
However, there didn’t need to be such concern over the Black Cats’ left-field buys this time around, with Isidor proving himself to be a reliable source of impressive strikes in the second tier since joining.
Sunderland even forked out £3m in the last transfer window to make Isidor’s stay permanent, with the Frenchman repaying his team’s faith with excellent goals such as the one against Leeds United in February.
During that clash, Sky Sports journalist Dougie Critchley referred to the 6 foot 1 attacker as a “one-man machine” for the ease at which he shrugged off Ethan Ampadu to then fire home.
In total, Isidor finds himself on 12 goals and two assists in Championship action, with a hope on the Frenchman’s end that he is Premier League-bound very soon.
But, the promotion candidates might well have saved themselves some hassle if they’d kept a firmer grip on their former striker who left the Stadium of Light in 2019 in premature fashion.
Where Are They Now
Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.
Sunderland's "special" academy star now better than Isidor
It’s well known to many now that Sunderland have a reputation for producing some top-quality youngsters, with the current crop at Le Bris’ disposal boasting the likes of Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg, among other standout names.
But, it might be forgotten that Josh Maja’s first big break in the senior game came on Wearside, with the wide-eyed starlet an instant hit in the first team picture when given a shot.
Yet, as Sunderland are all too aware of when it comes to Bellingham and Co in the here and now, it’s hard to keep their best prospects around after they’ve exploded into life, with Maja’s electric return of 17 goals from 49 first team appearances piquing Bordeaux’s interest.
Bordeaux eventually won their man for £3.5m, and whilst the now 26-year-old’s playing days haven’t always been smooth sailing since exiting Sunderland owing to injury concerns, he is still very much a goal machine when at the peak of his powers. That has been seen this season when lining up for the Black Cats’ promotion foes in West Bromwich Albion.

Looking at the table above, Maja has been even more clinical than Isidor this season arguably, with fewer big chances missed and a faster goalscoring frequency than his Sunderland counterpart on display.
The “special” attacker – as he was labelled by Carlos Corberan earlier this campaign – is currently sidelined with another injury issue, but he might well end up firing the Baggies to promotion if he can recapture his form back at full fitness, with his deadliness in-front of goal reportedly making him a £15m target for some Premier League sides.
Ultimately, Sunderland will regret not being able to keep Maja around for longer, but Le Bris will just pray Isidor has enough in the tank to guide his team up to the top-flight over Tony Mowbray’s challengers.

Manchester United have several glaring issues that need urgent attention.
The Red Devils are in desperate need of a new striker, with current options Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee managing just five Premier League goals between them in 47 appearances this season.
Reinforcements at centre-back are also a must as Ruben Amorim’s side continue to struggle with injuries and a lack of quality, leading to cheap goals being conceded week after week.
However, perhaps their biggest concern is in goal, with André Onana failing to convince since his move from Inter in the summer of 2023.
6 players Manchester United should sign this summer
United are in need of a revamp in the summer.
2 ByBarney Lane Feb 4, 2025
While the Cameroon international has shown flashes of strong shot-stopping ability, he has also been prone to costly errors – often at the worst moments, including in defeats to Bayern Munich, Brighton & Hove Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Additionally, his distribution has not been as effective as it was at Inter, and he looks increasingly shaky when dealing with high balls.
United will have to wait until the summer to find a long-term replacement for Onana, but until they do, here are eight goalkeepers who could step in and solve their problems between the sticks.
1 David de Gea Fiorentina
David de Gea was, of course, the man Onana replaced at Old Trafford, departing as a free agent just days before the Cameroonian’s arrival.
The Spaniard left United seventh in their list of all-time appearances, featuring in 545 games across all competitions, and as a four-time winner of the club’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.
After spending a season without a club, De Gea joined Fiorentina last summer and has quickly re-established himself as a top goalkeeper in Serie A. He has kept seven clean sheets and ranks highly for saves made and goals-against per game, playing a key role in Fiorentina’s push for European football.
According to The Athletic, before joining La Viola, De Gea told close friends he would be open to a return to United – provided that Erik ten Hag and John Murtough were no longer at the club. Now both are gone, maybe this has paved the way for a potential return.
2 Juan Musso Atletico Madrid/Atalanta
Juan Musso for Atletico Madrid.
Juan Musso is among the latest goalkeepers to be linked with a move to Manchester United.
According to reports in Spain, the Argentinian has emerged as a potential option as concerns grow over Onana’s inconsistent displays this season.
Musso, currently on loan at Atlético Madrid from Atalanta, has struggled for regular minutes behind Jan Oblak. With his future in Spain uncertain, a switch to Old Trafford could give him the opportunity for a more established role.
Though not a high-profile solution, the 30-year-old – who ranks in the 99th percentile for save percentage among goalkeepers in Europe’s top five leagues – could provide much-needed stability in the short term at the very least.
The 10 most expensive goalkeepers of all time
The world record has only been beaten twice since the 2000s, but who is football’s most expensive goalkeeper?
ByBrett Worthington Jan 29, 2025 3 Mike Maignan Milan
AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
If Manchester United fans could choose Onana’s replacement, chances are Milan’s Mike Maignan would be high on most wishlists.
Since joining Milan in 2021, the France international – praised as “incredible” by national team boss Didier Deschamps – has cemented his status as one of Europe’s top goalkeepers. He has kept 55 clean sheets in 148 appearances for the Rossoneri, including 17 in his debut season to help secure the 2021/22 Serie A title.
Maignan has also earned a spot in Serie A’s Team of the Season twice and was named in the Team of the Tournament at Euro 2024, where France reached the semi-finals.
His excellent reflexes, commanding presence in the box, and consistency have made him a crucial figure for Milan and the national team, and that could yet make him a perfect fit for United, who need a reliable leader between the sticks.
4 Illan Meslier Leeds United
Leeds United’s Illan Meslier was on Man Utd’s radar in the summer of 2023, but the club ultimately opted for Onana instead.
According to reports from late last year, United have since rekindled their interest in the Frenchman, with goalkeeping scout Tony Coton reportedly a long-time admirer.
Coton has closely monitored the 24-year-old, who has made over 240 appearances for Leeds since joining from Lorient in 2019.
This season, Meslier has kept an impressive 20 clean sheets in 33 Championship games – the second-most in the division, only behind Burnley’s James Trafford.
However, despite his shot-stopping ability, he has been prone to costly errors, including a high-profile blunder against Sunderland when he let the ball slip through his legs in the final moments, gifting the opposition a draw.
If he can iron out those mistakes, he could be a strong addition for United. If not, replacing Onana with him might feel like a case of swapping one inconsistent ‘keeper for another.

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 24, 2025 5 James Trafford Burnley
England'sJamesTraffordduring the warm up before the match
Speaking of James Trafford, the Burnley shot-stopper is someone United should seriously consider as a potential replacement for Onana.
The Englishman has been outstanding in the Championship this season, keeping 24 clean sheets in 33 games while conceding just nine goals – the fewest in the division by a significant margin.
Last summer, Trafford reportedly agreed to a £16m move to Newcastle before the deal collapsed, but the Magpies are expected to reignite their interest in him this year.
While his price tag has likely risen, he could still represent a bargain, and United should have the financial muscle to compete with Newcastle for his signature.
However, the real challenge would be convincing him that Old Trafford is the right destination. With Newcastle seemingly on course for Champions League qualification while United languish in mid-table, that could prove a tough sell.
6 Senne Lammens Royal Antwerp
Senne Lammens for Royal Antwerp.
Royal Antwerp’s Senne Lammens has emerged as a potential option to strengthen Manchester United’s goalkeeping ranks.
At just 22, he’d be more of a long-term investment, but the Belgian has already cemented himself as Antwerp’s first-choice goalkeeper and is a regular for Belgium’s U21s, and could yet become the long-term successor to Thibaut Courtois for his nation.
Recently, he admitted that a move to Old Trafford would be difficult to turn down if the opportunity presented itself.
“I’ve only played one full season at Antwerp,” Lammens told Belgian outlet Gazet Van Antwerpen, per Sports Mole. “If something comes along that I can hardly say no to and that will benefit the club, I’ll have to think about it seriously. But if I’m the first ‘keeper here for another year, that’s no problem.”
The Antwerp star also expressed how honoured he felt to be linked with United.
“The first time I heard it, I thought, ‘Wow, a world team that follows you. That is special,'” he explained. “They are still just rumours. Those top clubs have so many scouts and follow so many players. So it doesn’t have to mean anything yet. It will only become clear in the summer whether anything comes of it.”
Man Utd's most expensive sales of all time
A look at Man Utd’s record departures in their history.
1 ByCharlie Smith Oct 3, 2025 7 Gregor Kobel Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
Gregor Kobel has firmly established himself as one of the standout goalkeepers in the German Bundesliga since joining Borussia Dortmund in 2021.
The Switzerland international has kept 49 clean sheets in 149 appearances for BVB, including an impressive 14 in all competitions last season as the German side made it to the Champions League final.
According to reports in Spain, Kobel is now firmly on United’s radar, with the Red Devils eyeing a move for the 27-year-old in the summer.
However, the club will reportedly face competition from Chelsea for his signature, who are looking to replace a mistake-prone goalkeeper of their own in Robert Sanchez.
Boasting impressive passing numbers, and perhaps most importantly, a lack of errors, Kobel would be a massive upgrade on Onana and could provide some much-needed stability to Amorim’s backline.
Whether Dortmund would allow him to leave is another question, especially given the praise of sporting director Sebastian Kehl, who said via the Bundesliga’s official website: “In Dortmund, Gregor has developed into a goalkeeper of world-class calibre who has attracted the interest of many top clubs in Europe. We’re proud that we were able to inspire him to continue at BVB.”

If United can’t afford to wait until the summer for a new No 1, they may have to turn to an in-house solution – specifically Onana’s current backup, Altay Bayindir.
The Turkey international, who arrived from Fenerbahçe in 2023, has had limited opportunities but has shown he’s more than capable of stepping up as Ruben Amorim’s first-choice goalkeeper, even if only temporarily.
His standout moment came in January when he played a key role in knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup.
Bayindir not only saved a penalty from Martin Ødegaard in regular time, but also made a crucial close-range stop to deny Kai Havertz late in extra time, forcing a shootout, where he saved Havertz’s penalty, earning himself the Player of the Match award.
After Onana’s costly error in a 3-1 loss to Brighton later that month, Amorim hinted at a possible change in goal, but Bayindir has yet to be given a sustained chance.
