According to , two players tested positive for a banned substance during the tests carried out after Premier League and English Football League games last season. The report adds it is unclear what substances were found in the samples or why they escaped punishment.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The report adds that the number of tests carried out by UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) has dropped a significant amount year on year. In 2023-24, 2,176 tests across the Premier League, Championship, League One and League Two were carried out, compared to 2,546 in those four divisions the year before. That is an 11 per cent fall in testing which is a worrying statistic and raises a lot of questions.

WHAT THE FA SAID

The English Football Association told : “We take anti-doping in English football extremely seriously. We are fully compliant with the National Anti-Doping Policy of the UK government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport; fund one of world sport’s leading anti-doping programmes; and input into targeted, researched and intelligence-led drug testing that is directed by UK Anti-Doping. We also operate our own dedicated social drugs programme to safeguard the physical and mental wellbeing of footballers; and to uphold the values and ethics of the sport.”

Eileen Ash, oldest-ever Test cricketer, dies aged 110

Eileen Ash, who was the oldest living Test cricketer, has died at the age of 110 with the ECB paying tribute to “a remarkable woman who led an extraordinary life”.Ash, née Whelan, made her Test debut for England against Australia in 1937 and played seven Tests in total, taking 10 wickets at an average of 23.00 with her right-arm seam bowling before her retirement in 1949. In the middle of her international career, she was seconded to MI6 – the UK’s secret intelligence service – during the Second World War.Ash was a well-known figure throughout her final years. She rang the bell at Lord’s ahead of England’s win in the final of the 2017 Women’s World Cup against India, and two years later the MCC unveiled a portrait of her at the same ground.Related

I am deeply sad to be saying goodbye to her today.”Heather [Knight, England captain] and I went to visit Eileen about six months before the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup – she was 105 at the time – and it was one of the most remarkable experiences. Eileen taught Heather yoga, we played snooker, we drank cups of tea and we leafed through newspapers and scrapbooks celebrating Eileen’s time as a player in the 1930s and 1940s.”She regaled us with some amazing stories, including how she came to have her bat signed by Sir Donald Bradman at a French restaurant in Sydney in 1949. I know neither of us will ever forget that day, it was so special.”Our thoughts and prayers are with Eileen’s family as they come to terms with losing such a wonderful woman and the end of an astonishing life.”

Spurs have endured a difficult run of form, slipping to 14th in the league standings and suffering back-to-back eliminations from domestic cup competitions within the space of a week. With their Europa League campaign now their last realistic shot at silverware, the return of multiple senior players could be the fresh start they need.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

In a massive boost for Postecoglou, Tottenham could see as many as five first-team stars return to full training this week. Guglielmo Vicario, Destiny Udogie, James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, and Timo Werner are all edging closer to a comeback, providing much-needed encouragement for the north London side.

  • WHAT POSTECOGLOU SAID

Vicario has been out of action since November 23, when he sustained a fractured foot during Tottenham’s 4-0 triumph over Manchester City. Whereas, Udogie was sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury in the 2-2 draw against Wolves at the end of December. Maddison’s absence has been particularly felt in midfield. The playmaker, missing for three weeks due to a calf strain, remains crucial to Tottenham’s creativity in attack. Meanwhile, Johnson and Werner have been out of action since mid-January. With their return on the horizon, Postecoglou could finally regain some flexibility in his forward line.

The Australian boss remained cautiously optimistic, stating: "We hope to have three, maybe four, players back in training this week, and potentially one or two more in the next couple of weeks."

While the potential return of five stars is encouraging, uncertainty looms over several other key players. Richarlison picked up a calf issue during last week’s Carabao Cup semi-final defeat to Liverpool, and his availability for the United clash remains unclear. Additionally, defenders Micky van de Ven (hamstring) and Cristian Romero (thigh) are recovering at a slower pace, with no set timeline for their returns.

Mitchell’s Newcastle scouts love 21 y/o who’s "incredibly good defensively"

A new transfer report has claimed that Newcastle United are one of several Premier League clubs whose scouts have been wowed by a player who is “incredibly good defensively”.

Newcastle transfer news

In some much needed positive transfer news, the Magpies have reportedly been boosted in their efforts to sign Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo, who has been enjoying a superb season for the west Londoners and is a dream target for sporting director Paul Mitchell.

While a summer transfer in 2025 looks more likely than a switch during the January transfer window, the Bees may entertain offers of £50m for the Cameroonian’s services, considering he will only have one year remaining on his contract at that point.

In terms of other transfer rumours doing the rounds at Newcastle, Sevilla centre-back Loic Bade is seen as an option for Eddie Howe, as the Magpies look to bring in more defensive cover, amid long-term injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.

Alexander Isak’s St James’ Park future is in some doubt currently, with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea believed to be eyeing a move for him, and Paris Saint-Germain striker Randal Kolo Muani has emerged as a target for Newcastle, should they need to replace the Swede.

Newcastle scouts wowed by 21-year-old star

According to Caught Offside, Mitchell’s Newcastle’s scouts have been blown away by Barcelona midfielder Marca Casado, with Liverpool and Manchester United also mentioned as potential suitors.

The Magpies are among the clubs who have “received positive feedback” on the 21-year-old, with scouts seeing his “vision on the ball and ability to control a game from midfield” as strong aspects of his game, despite his tender years.

Casado is a footballer with an immense amount of potential, already becoming a vital figure for Barca this season, starting eight matches in La Liga, including in the memorable recent 4-0 win away to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu. Hansi Flick is under no illusions as to how good he is, saying of his player: “He’s incredible. If you see him play now, if you know where he comes from and the level now, everything that has improved.

“He’s incredibly good defensively, also with the ball at his feet. This is La Masia. I’m very happy. Everyone sees the quality of these players. You can see it in the second half when we combined and kept possession. It’s been very good.”

Casado looks a class act both in and out of possession, with his technical ability highlighted by three assists and a 91.2% pass completion rate in the league in 2024/25. Flick’s praise of his defensive game also speaks volumes.

Newcastle signing the young Spaniard would be a major coup, especially if they pipped Liverpool and United to his signature, but Barca will surely be desperate to retain his services.

Blessing Muzarabani, Craig Ervine, Sikandar Raza hand Zimbabwe only second Super League win

Zimbabwe have claimed their first outright ODI win in their last 15 matches dating back to April 2019, and have gained ten crucial points on the World Cup Super League. Half-centuries from Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza took them to a competitive total in the first ODI in Belfast, and required Ireland to pull off their highest successful chase against them before a strangling bowling effort sealed Zimbabwe’s win.Blessing Muzarabani, Wellington Masakadza and Sean Williams took seven wickets for 41 runs in the last ten overs, as Ireland went from a challenging but doable position of needing 81 runs in the last 12 overs to eventually falling 38 short. Muzarabani, who used the short ball to good effect, was the pick of the bowlers with his third haul of four wickets or more in his 25-match ODI career. In the end, Ireland were left lamenting their slow start, which saw the required run rate pop above six as early as the 19th over. They were 79 for 1 at that stage, having lost Paul Stirling leg before against Masakadza after he was the major contributor to a 64-run opening stand with William Porterfield. Still, the pair gave Ireland a solid foundation to build their chase.Andy Balbirnie did not last too long either, and was bowled by Madhevere, whose offbreak snuck through the Irish captain’s bat-pad gap. Ireland were 109 for 2 at the halfway stage and needed to up the ante. They had the personnel – an anchor in Porterfield, who reached 50 off 78 balls, and an aggressor in Harry Tector – and seemed to have a plan. Porterfield took on short balls from Richard Ngarava, and used his feet and the sweep shot well against the spinners. The pair put on 71 for the third wicket before Porterfield pulled a short delivery from Luke Jongwe to fine leg, where Dion Myers juggled the ball, which dropped out of his hands and onto his shoulder on first attempt, before catching it.Sikandar Raza helped Zimbabwe post 83 runs in the last 8.4 overs•Sportsfile via Getty Images

In Tector and George Dockrell, Ireland had two energetic run-scorers at the crease, and they both showed some intent. But Ervine had kept plenty of overs in hand for Muzarabani and Masakadza, and they turned out to be his trump cards. Muzarabani took a wicket with the third ball of his second spell when Dockrell chased a wide delivery and edged behind, a dismissal that was confirmed on review. In his next over, Muzarabani had Simi Singh caught at cover off a leading edge, with Ireland starting to wobble.Their required run rate had reached eight, but Tector was still on hand. He brought up 50 off 53 balls but was out three balls later, edging an attempted slog sweep off Williams to Muzarabani at short third man. Williams also had Andy McBrine caught behind, before Muzarabani and Masakadza finished it off. Ireland were bowled out inside 49 overs to give Zimbabwe a comfortable win.Though Zimbabwe may have been relatively pleased with their batting effort, they could have been eyeing a total closer to 300, after reaching 85 for 1 in the first 14 overs. Brendan Taylor was well set on 49 off 44 balls after starting his innings slowly, and had put on 71 with Ervine, but the former captain played a reckless shot to the first ball of spin in the innings when he swept Simi to deep square leg to put the breaks on a strong start. After Taylor’s dismissal, Simi and McBrine bowled in tandem for 16 overs and gave away just 39 runs. In that time, Myers was dismissed when he top-edged McBrine to Lorcan Tucker, while Williams battled to get to 20 off 45 balls, with only 14 scoring shots. Zimbabwe immediately found reprieve when the spin duo had bowled out, and so Josh Little, who had had a hapless afternoon and finished with figures of 1 for 78 from nine overs, returned. While all of Ireland’s seamers were guilty of bowling too full, Little was the worst offender. He enjoyed some reward when he bowled Williams with a cutter, though that only brought Zimbabwe’s most aggressive batter, Raza, to the crease. By that point, Ervine had reached fifty and was ready to accelerate, as the pair put on 32 runs in 29 balls to get Zimbabwe back on track for 250-plus.Ervine played one big shot too many when he hit Dockrell straight to cover, but Raza first combined with Wessley Madhevere and then Jongwe to help Zimbabwe post 83 runs in the 8.4 overs after Ervine was dismissed. Raza finished unbeaten on 59 off 44 balls, his 18th ODI half-century.Despite the win, Zimbabwe remain in last position on the World Cup Super League points table, with the same number of points as Netherlands – on 20. However, they have the opportunity to gain ground in the rest of the series.

Retrospectiva LANCE!

West Brom star just had his worst game of the season vs Boro

West Bromwich Albion are now off the top of the Championship perch as Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough got the better of the Baggies at the Hawthorns by a solitary goal.

In truth, it wasn’t the most action-packed spectacle in the West Midlands, but Hayden Hackney would manage to coolly slot home a chance late on for the away side to be crowned slim 1-0 victors.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

There were many underperformers on the night from West Brom’s perspective, with two defeats now worryingly picked up on the spin for the early promotion chasers, after they had once set the pace for the division.

The main West Brom underperformers vs Boro

It was a very poor display from the attackers at Carlos Corberan’s disposal, with just one shot on target accumulated come the full-time whistle.

The likes of Jed Wallace and Karlan Grant were notably below-par down the wings, as the Baggies captain failed to create chances galore for his teammates with just 14 accurate passes registered, whilst Grant failed to complete a single dribble from four attempts.

Moreover, it was another weak showing from Darnell Furlong after his own goal away at Sheffield Wednesday – who is usually one of the first names on the Spaniard’s teamsheet – with the Baggies number two uncharacteristically sloppy on the ball by squandering possession a costly 16 times.

But, one performance, in particular, will have been heavily scrutinised under the microscope post-match more than others, as Josh Maja failed to ever spark into life.

Maja's performance vs Boro in numbers

It was a strangely wasteful performance from the ex-Fulham striker, who had this golden opportunity put on a plate for him by Alex Mowatt deep into the second 45 minutes, only for his connection to be all off.

Before Tuesday night’s game, Maja had seven goals in seven for the Baggies in league action, but struggled throughout in a bid to make it an unbelievable eight from eight against Carrick’s visitors.

It wasn’t just Maja’s ineffectiveness in front of goal that would make for grim reading when digging into his numbers post-match, with the 25-year-old also poor on the ball with possession lost 12 times across his flat 90 minutes on the pitch.

The Nigerian attacker was also weak when asserting himself into duels, away from those possession numbers, with only 40% of his duels successfully won on the night to truly cap off a dire individual showing leading the line for Corberan’s men.

It will be intriguing to see if the Baggies boss decides to drop Maja for West Brom’s next Championship clash this weekend against Millwall, with the former Huddersfield Town manager well aware that bold calls such as axing the usually potent centre-forward could get a reaction out of his troops, who have now surprisingly tasted defeat twice in quick succession.

Still, Corberan could also stick by the 25-year-old for the test of Neil Harris’ men on Saturday, with Maja leading the way for most goals scored in the division even after this quiet showing.

The last two games will have acted as a big wake-up call for the West Brom manager, as the Baggies now find themselves outside of the top two positions and bruised ahead of more challenging Championship clashes to come.

Ziyech initially joined the Turkish giants on loan for the second half of last season from Chelsea before making the move permanent in the summer. After a productive loan stint, the 31-year-old has struggled at the Super Lig team this term, making just three starts in his 11 appearances and failing to get on the scoresheet. Now, the Morocco international says he doesn't want to play for the club anymore and tore into Galatasaray manager Buruk, too.

"Galatasaray is over for me. I don't want to play here anymore. I'm leaving in January," he said, relayed by journalist Haluk Yürekli. "I've never seen a coach of such a low level. I don't care that much [if joining Galatasaray was a mistake]. I want to be left alone, no matter what happens. I regret coming here."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The career of the attacking midfielder Ziyech, who can also play as a winger, appears to be on a downward trajectory after falling out of favour at Chelsea and now Galatasaray. The former Ajax man's contract runs until next summer but he may be off before then as these comments are unlikely to go down well at the Turkish giants.
