Chahar's all-round efforts secure 2-0 series win for India A

Apart from the allrounder’s second-innings performances, KS Bharat and Anmolpreet Singh contributed heavily with the bat

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jun-2019India A completed a resounding 2-0 series rout of Sri Lanka A with a 152-run triumph in Hubli, thanks to legspinner Rahul Chahar’s six-wicket match haul and a maiden fifty with the bat. Chahar’s efforts were complemented ably by KS Bharat and Anmolpreet Singh, who contributed significantly with the bat in both innings.Sri Lanka A lost the toss for the second time in the series, but resisted India’s onslaught for longer than they had done in the first match that had lasted three days. In Hubli, the hosts were bowled out for 269 – of which wicketkeeper-batsman KS Bharat made 117 – thanks to Lahiru Kumara and Lakshan Sandakan, who picked 4 for 53 and 4 for 64 respectively. Tottering at 64 for 3, India A’s innings found resuscitation through Bharat and Anmolpreet’s 91-run stand. Anmolpreet chipped in with a knock of 65, studded with six fours and two sixes. In reply, the visitors conceded a 57-run deficit as no other batsman, apart from No. 7 Kamindu Mendis, made a half-century. Mendis’ 68 helped his side scrape to 212 as all six India A bowlers took at least a wicket each. Offspinner Jayant Yadav was the pick of them with 3 for 24 from his 12 overs while Sandeep Warrier and Shivam Dube took two apiece.India A put on a more convincing show with the bat in their second dig, with the middle-order trio of Anmolpreet (60), Siddhesh Lad (53) and Bharat (60) leading the way. The 123-run eighth-wicket stand between Rahul Chahar and Jayant then built on this platform, taking India A past 350. Chahar hit a 109-ball 84 for his maiden first-class fifty, while Jayant made 53, having been dismissed for single-digit scores in the preceding three innings. The pair fell in a span of nine balls, but their partnership ensured India A amassed 372 to set Sri Lanka A a target of 430.A score of 277 in 66.4 overs was all the tourists could get, despite Bhanuka Rajapaksa’s rapid 110 at No 3 – his seventh first-class ton – and an enterprising 46 from Kamindu. Chahar played a big role in their undoing, snaffling 5 for 112, his sixth five-wicket haul at this level.

Kings XI take aim at RCB's batting problems

De Villiers looks rusty and the middle order continues to be a source of worry for RCB as they try to turn around a six-match losing streak

Alagappan Muthu12-Apr-20196:02

Will RCB finally collect their first win?

Big picturePlenty of Royal Challengers Bangalore’s losses tally back to their weak bowling units. But it may be argued that the six on the trot this season is more the result of their batting misfiring through every stage of an IPL match. Statistics indicate they have scored at 7.3 per over in the Powerplay (seventh-best out of eight teams), 6.9 between overs 7 and 15 (seventh-best again) and 8.9 in the back end (dead last). So, clearly, Kings XI Punjab have plenty of targets to aim at and a fine roster of bowlers to do it for them. Yet, two of their three losses in 2019 were the result of bowling mishaps. They fumbled a great opportunity against Mumbai earlier this week and, before that, allowed KKR to score 218. Strange things happen in the IPL and that trend is probably going to continue when these two teams meet on Saturday. In the news Kings XI batting coach S Sriram said Chris Gayle felt a twitch in his back during the game against Mumbai on Wednesday and that he needed to be monitored. Mayank Agarwal missed Kings XI’s previous match with a hand injury. The 28-year old has already played a high-impact innings against one of the best bowling teams in the tournament and his return to the XI could prove a major boost. RCB confirmed the signing of Dale Steyn on Friday evening. The South Africa fast bowler replaces the injured Nathan Coulter-Nile but will only be available for selection after April 15. Form guide

Kings XI Punjab: Lost to Mumbai Indians by three wickets, beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets, lost to Chennai Super Kings by 22 runs
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Lost to Delhi Capitals by four wickets, lost to Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets, lost to Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets

Previous meetingGoes back to last year, when Kings XI were bowled out for 88 after fast bowler Umesh Yadav took out their two best batsmen – KL Rahul and Chris Gayle – inside five overs. RCB won with 10 wickets and 71 balls to spare.BCCI

Likely XIsKings XI Punjab: 1 KL Rahul (wk), 2 Mayank Agarwal, 3 Karun Nair, 4 David Miller/ Nicholas Pooran, 5 Sarfaraz Khan, 6 Mandeep Singh, 7 Sam Curran, 8 R Ashwin (capt), 9 Mujeeb Ur Rahman, 10 M Ashwin, 11 Mohammed ShamiRoyal Challengers Bangalore: 1 Virat Kohli (capt), 2 Parthiv Patel (wk), 3 AB de Villiers, 4 Marcus Stoinis, 5 Moeen Ali, 6 Akshdeep Nath, 7 Pawan Negi, 8 Tim Southee, 9 Umesh Yadav, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Navdeep SainiStrategy punt Spin to AB de Villiers. His strike-rate of 94 this season is among the lowest for any batsman over the first 10 balls of their innings. Also, three of his five dismissals in 2019 were the result of opposition teams forcing him to play spin as soon as he came to the crease. Kings XI will want to exploit this weakness, and may even draft M Ashwin into their XI to do so. De Villiers, since IPL 2017, has lost his wicket to legspin seven times, while making a modest 158 runs in 121 balls. There is an equally strong case for Umesh Yadav’s inclusion in the RCB line-up. He matches up favourably against both Gayle and Rahul, conceding just about a run a ball, while also dismissing them a combined four times – Gayle thrice and Rahul once. In fact, Kings XI are Umesh’s favourite opposition – 26 wickets (personal best), 16 average (personal best), 7.13 economy (personal best)R Ashwin is pumped up after taking a wicket•BCCI

Stats that matter Since IPL 2015, the average first-innings score in a night game at Mohali is 173 and this is one of the rare venues where teams have more wins batting first (11) than second (5) RCB desperately need a strong hand in the middle order, especially now that international retirement seems to have made de Villiers a bit rusty. In an ideal world, Colin de Grandhomme and Moeen Ali should have solved that problem considering they have been striking at 148 and 170 in the middle overs of a T20 match since 2015. Except they average only 19 when playing the shortest format in India and it is that trend that is on show a little too often. Fair warning to fans of both teams. The Powerplay might be hard to watch. RCB have picked up only three wickets in this period across six different matches – that’s a bowling average of 98. Kings XI have been equally ineffective; they are the only team that leaks runs at a higher rate (8.6) than RCB (8.2). So yeah, might be useful to hide behind the couch and ask a friend to tell you when the first six overs are done.

Spurs could ease Romero blow by handing “terrific” teen a debut

Tottenham Hotspur's turbulent campaign has actually tantalised prosperity down the line, with Ange Postecoglou's managerial appointment working wonders to restore the fluency.

Fifth in the Premier League after 18 matches and with a game in hand on third-placed Aston Villa, Spurs have the opportunity to advance against Brighton & Hove Albion this evening, having won their past three matches.

That said, Postecoglou has many issues to contend with, and while the Seagulls are not in the finest form, they possess more than enough to hurt the hosts this evening.

Spurs team news vs Brighton

Tottenham might be firing themselves back into form but they will need to defeat Roberto De Zerbi's squad with a certain thinness that stems from the injury troubles over the past few months.

Star centre-back Cristian Romero is expected to be out for four or five weeks after sustaining a hamstring injury, and with Micky van de Ven still not expected back until January, Postecoglou will be forced to tinker over the coming period.

No Romero as Ange makes 3 changes in Spurs' predicted lineup vs Brighton

The north Londoners will be chasing a fourth successive victory tomorrow evening.

ByRobbie Walls Dec 27, 2023

Yves Bissouma is serving the second game of a four-match ban before jetting off to AFCON, while James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Manor Solomon, Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon remain long-term absentees.

Relievingly, Destiny Udogie will return to the starting line-up after serving a suspension during last week's hard-fought victory over Everton.

The players who could replace Cristian Romero vs Brighton

Udogie's availability hugely benefits Postecoglou's chances of success against Brighton, with the Italian slotting into his natural position and allowing his stand-in, Emerson Royal, to perhaps move centrally.

This makeshift solution is something that has been implemented during the 2-1 home defeat against Villa and the thrilling 3-3 draw at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City, though he won just six of 15 duels across said encounters.

Eric Dier will be desperate to make another appearance after coming on at half-time against the Toffees; the England international is firmly out of favour under the Australian's management but the pickings are slim down at N17 right now.

While the 29-year-old might not be the tailor-made choice for Postecoglou's system – amid reports that an exit could lie in store in January – he is an experienced Premier League defender and may well be called upon today.

Should Postecoglou opt for a different route, however, handing Alfie Dorrington his first-team debut might be the perfect solution, with Spurs reporter Alasdair Gold claiming that he's "one of the most exciting centre-back prospects to emerge from Spurs' academy in years."

Dorrington, aged just 18, has been on the bench for the past seven outings and won all nine of his games in the Premier League 2 with the U21s earlier in the term, with a scouting report highlighting his strength in passing, positioning and being 'strong and decisive in the challenge'.

Romero is not easily replaced, with the aggressive star ranking among the top 14% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 19% for progressive passes, the top 6% for tackles and the top 17% for blocks, as per FBref.

But Dorrington has been described as a 'commanding' centre-half by his club and will be confident in his ability to do a job on the major stage, with Gold stating that he believes a debut could be in the pipeline soon for the "terrific" starlet.

Having now been within the first-team mix for multiple match weeks, Dorrington could be handed his chance to shine, perhaps even impressing and staking his claim for a prominent role over the weeks and months to come.

Leicester could sign "incredible" £4m Souttar upgrade

Leicester City just keep winning. Another comfortable victory against Plymouth Argyle this weekend meant that the Foxes have now picked up back-to-back wins in the Championship.

Breaking Reading's record of accumulating 106 points in England's second tier looks like a real possibility, which has been helped by the fact that Leicester maintained several players after the club were relegated from the top flight.

Former Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray admitted that "they are Premier League" after the Black Cats were devoured by the Foxes earlier in the campaign.

Nevertheless, head coach Enzo Maresca is still looking to add even more Premier League quality to his squad ahead of the second half of the campaign and could be set to bolster his defensive department.

Leicester transfer news – Joe Worrall

In the aftermath of four consecutive defeats in the league, leaving the side just five points from the relegation zone, The Daily Mail reported that Nottingham Forest's club captain Joe Worrall has been asked to train away from the first-team group, alongside centre-back counterpart Scott McKenna. Furthermore, the outlet claimed that there were no behavioural issues, yet the duo have been put up for sale this coming January.

Another article published by The Daily Mail after the initial report has now claimed that Leicester City are monitoring Worrall ahead of the winter window, with Maresca looking to add depth and quality to his backline. Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough are also in the running for the 26-year-old centre-half.

Worrall has been with Nottingham Forest for quite some time and has been an integral part of the team in recent seasons, helping to guide the club to promotion back in 2022 under Steve Cooper in the playoff final. The manager even called his central defender "incredible" earlier this season.

Since returning from a loan spell at Rangers in 2019, Worrall has proven to be an important player for the Tricky Trees.

However, there has been a massive dip in his involvement in the side this term, leaving the door open for a Leicester City swoop.

Joe Worrall's stats this season

Worrall could move to the King Power Stadium for relatively cheap. The CIES Football Observatory have placed the defender's market value at £4m, although Worrall still has a little under three years remaining on his contract, having signed a new deal back in September, so perhaps Leicester may need to cough up a little more than that.

The former Premier League champions currently have the best defence in the Championship, having conceded a mere 12 goals from 19 matches. Wout Faes and Jannik Vestergaard have been Maresca's preferred duo at the back and the pair have been very solid this season.

However, backup centre-back Harry Souttar has struggled for minutes this season and has played just 81 minutes of league action in total.

Speaking after his side's win at home to Plymouth on Saturday, Maresca explained that the Australian is being left out of the team due to the excellent form of Faes and Vestergaard. Having signed for £15m from Stoke City back in January, Souttar could leave the club in the near future, having already been up for sale during the summer.

Worrall could be the perfect replacement for the 25-year-old who, based on his last season in the Championship, outperformed both Souttar and Faes' stats this term.

Worrall would certainly get into the squad over Souttar and could allow the latter to finally leave for pastures new, but there is a good chance that the Englishman takes Faes' place in the team as well by the end of the campaign should he move to the King Power Stadium.

Harris stays in the runs before Short, Gotch secure victory

Opening batsman Harris made 67 to take his tally of Shield runs for the season over 400

Matthew Short and Seb Gotch produced an unbroken century stand to maintain Victoria’s unbeaten start to the Sheffield Shield season as they chased down 276 after a brief wobble in the afternoon.Jackson Bird had given Tasmania early hope when he bowled Travis Dean and had Peter Handscomb, a player on the fringes of the Test side, caught on the leg side but Marcus Harris and Cameron White then added 85 to settle the chase.Harris, who became just the fourth batsman to cross 400 runs for the Shield season, ensured talk of a potential Test call didn’t fade with 67 before falling lbw to Gabe Bell and when White went in the next over Victoria were 4 for 145 with Tasmania sniffing a chance. But that was the last of the success for the home attack on a surface that refused to break up, as evidenced by how Tasmania battled back into the match with 476 in their second innings after being skittled for 81 on the opening day.Short and Gotch forge a matchwinning stand of 131, Gotch striking 11 boundaries in his 66 and Short finishing the match with a six off Bird.

Kent carry slight edge into tense finale

Kent need another 52 with six wickets left to strengthen their hold on the top two and end Middlesex’s challenge in the process

ECB Reporters Network11-Sep-2018
ScorecardA thrilling third day finish could be in prospect at Lord’s where Division Two rivals Kent and Middlesex continue to cross swords in an action-packed Specsavers County Championship match. After the loss of 19 wickets on day one, this low scoring clash continued with a further 15 falling on an enthralling second day that ended through bad light at 6.20pm with Kent on 104 for four – requiring another 52 runs with six, second innings wickets intact to secure their fourth successive championship win and strengthen their hold on a top-two place. With a potential 39 overs remaining in the day, Kent looked to make an ultra-positive start to their run chase but paid the price with the loss of four cheap wickets.Zak Crawley was superbly caught by Dawid Malan off Ethan Bamber, then an over later, Matt Henry – promoted to pinch hit at No3 – skewed his second ball to mid-off to gift his wicket to Steven Finn.Sean Dickson and Joe Denly added 33 for the third wicket until Denly went leg before to James Fuller, then Dickson’s stay for 32 ended when he prodded at the first ball of a new spell from Bamber to be caught low at second slip. The umpires took the players off nine balls later for a 20-minute break for bad light, after which Daniel Bell-Drummond and Heino Kuhn emerged to add 50 runs in positive fashion before the gloom descended again.Kent took a stranglehold on proceedings during the mid-session when New Zealand strike bowler Henry bagged four for 40 to inspire a Middlesex collapse that saw the hosts lose eight wickets for 88 runs.In taking five victims in this game Henry, the championship’s leading wicket-taker, took his season’s tally to 66 at less than 15 apiece as Middlesex succumbed in 60.2 overs. It was Kent’s 42-year-old all-rounder Darren Stevens who started the home demise by breaking a useful opening stand worth 59 between Sam Morgan and Nick Gubbins.Robson and Gubbins rode their luck under the floodlights as Henry and Harry Podmore beat the outside edge on numerous occasions. Yet, within 10 overs, Middlesex had wiped out the first innings deficit of 31 as the pair went on to record only their third 50-run first-wicket stand of the championship summer.Stevens, fresh from signing a one-year contract extension to keep him at Kent for a 14th season, then struck at the double. Robson edged an away-singer to second slip then, four runs later, left-hander Max Holden fell leg before to an in-swinger that pitched on leg and middle to beat Holden’s airy, leg-side flick.Middlesex lost three wickets for one run in the space of 13 balls after lunch after resuming on their interval score of 98 for two. Gubbins, off balance and working across the line, departed lbw to Podmore, then Henry swung the very next delivery back in to end Dawid Malan’s innings of 32.Podmore’s slower ball off-cutter, which turned into a dipping, low full-toss, was scooped straight to mid-wicket by Eoin Morgan and the procession continued when Martin Andersson, in crab-like defence, played inside the line to Podmore’s in-ducker to be given lbw.Stevie Eskinazi went in the same fashion to a shooting off-cutter from Stevens and Henry returned to polish things off with a 20-ball stint of three for seven. The slippery Kiwi got one to lift and leave Oli Rayner for a regulation catch at second slip then, in his next over, swung a full one away from Bamber for Sam Billings to snaffle a diving catch in front of slip.Henry trapped Finn lbw for his 66th wicket of the championship campaign to leave Kent with a potential seven sessions of the match to secure their ninth win of the campaign. The second day started with Kent completing their first innings. It lasted only another 11 deliveries as they added only three to their overnight score to miss out on a batting bonus point by eight runs.Grant Stewart, the Australian-born all-rounder, was Kent’s last man to go for a battling 63, bowled by Fuller when playing across the line of a very full delivery. Fuller, the pick of the home attack, finished with four for 49 as Kent secured a modest 31-run lead.

Matthew Wade's blazing hundred floors Victoria

Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell and Nic Maddinson all made starts in their chase of 322, but they fell short by 65 runs

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Sep-2018
Getty ImagesA volcanic century by Matthew Wade in an opening stand of 170 with Ben McDermott set Tasmania on the path to a match-winning total against Victoria in the domestic limited-overs match in Townsville.Wade’s 117 from 74 balls featured six sixes and included particularly severe punishment of the sometime international paceman Chris Tremain. His partnership with McDermott, who made a relatively sedate 56 in a supporting role, occupied a mere 22.5 overs, but ensured a mighty Tasmanian total even if Victoria’s bowlers recovered. This they did, restricting the rest of the Tigers’ batting line-up to 8 for 151 from the remaining 27.1 overs of the innings, notwithstanding swift cameos from George Bailey and Simon Milenko, but the final tally was still steep. The youthful Victorian pair of Will Sutherland and Tom O’Connell both bowled serviceably for their captain Peter Handscomb. The Victorian chase began promisingly via an opening stand of 72 between Marcus Harris and Seb Gotch, but neither batsman would be able to go on to the score managed earlier by Wade. Tasmania were duly able to make regular breakthroughs as the required run rate steadily climbed, largely through the bustling seam of Tom Rogers.Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell and Nic Maddinson all made starts, but were confounded by Rogers and also the left-arm spin of the former Victorian Clive Rose, who in taking 4-42 delivered the best figures of his domestic 50-over career.

Spurs: Ange without another injured Tottenham star after Manor Solomon blow

Tottenham Hotspur will be without another injured Spurs star against Luton Town this weekend amid the serious blow to winger Manor Solomon.

Luton Town vs Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou's high-flying Lilywhites side travel to take on Luton this Saturday, which will mark their final Premier League game before another international break commences. Both sides are currently at opposite ends of the spectrum, with Tottenham currently loving life under their new head coach after a brilliant start to the season.

Spurs have won five out of a possible seven league matches under Postecoglou; scoring 17 goals and even matching last season's treble-winners Man City in that regard. Victories over Bournemouth, Man United, Burnley, Sheffield United and Liverpool have displayed both Tottenham's newly-found winner's mentality and exciting style of 'Ange-ball'.

Meanwhile, Rob Edwards' struggling Luton side have won just once so far, losing five and drawing another – with only Bournemouth and Sheffield United scoring less goals than the Hatters. They've been widely tipped to go straight back down to the Championship after securing promotion via the play-offs last term, and it's highly likely this will be another routine win for Postecoglou's in-form Spurs.

Spurs team news

The north Londoners currently have Ivan Perisic out through injury and he is likely to miss the majority of the campaign, with the Croatian suffering a complex ACL problem in training recently. The issue required surgery and Perisic is now set to undergo rehabilitation.

Rodrigo Bentancur is another long-term absentee after his own ACL problem earlier this year, while the likes of Bryan Gil, Alfie Whiteman, Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon have also been on the treatment table recently. Solomon, who is expected to be out for at least two months after a serious knee injury this week, can now be added to that list of absentees as well.

To make matters worse, according to journalist Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic, Postecoglou will be without Brennan Johnson for their clash against Luton this weekend as he still hasn't recovered from a hamstring problem, which kept him out of Spurs' win over Liverpool. Johnson also didn't get the nod for Wales' Euro 2024 qualifiers as a result, with Postecoglou set to offer an update on Friday.

How good is Brennan Johnson?

The winger has started just once for Spurs this season but there is reportedly hope within the club that he'll become an "important" player for them. Former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey, speaking during the last international break, offered a glowing assessment of his international teammate.

"He's an unbelievable talent and has shown over the last year or so at Forest what he's capable of doing," said Ramsey.

"Hopefully he can take another step going forward, and hopefully for Wales he can be a main part of that for many years to come. He has so much ability, it's about us now just linking him and getting our front three really firing, playing together, giving each other opportunities and asking questions of the opposition."
