'Pitches need to produce good cricket' – Angus Fraser on boosting England's Test fortunes

Middlesex director of cricket warns against short-term gain of producing surfaces helpful to spin or seam

Andrew Miller30-Mar-2021Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s director of cricket, has insisted that a uniform spread of good cricket wickets remains the best way to develop Test-class cricketers, in spite of the difficulties that England encountered in spinning conditions on their tour of India this winter, where they succumbed to three heavy defeats at Chennai and Ahmedabad. After dominating the first Test at Chennai in the most batsman-friendly conditions of the series, England had few answers to India’s spin duo of R Ashwin and Axar Patel for the remainder of the campaign, as the pair finished with 59 wickets between them across the four Tests.Nor could England find a batsman able to thrive on those later surfaces to the same extent as either Rohit Sharma or Rishabh Pant. Each scored a century, in the second and fourth Test respectively, to put both contests out of reach, as England in reply managed a highest total of 205 in seven innings. In particular, the conditions that England faced in the final two Tests at Ahmedabad, where they slumped to defeats in two and three days respectively, drew comparisons with the situations that many sides face when visiting Taunton in the County Championship – or “Ciderabad”, as it is colloquially known, due to the dominance of spin at the venue.Related

But Fraser, who once described the pitch for Middlesex’s relegation-sealing defeat at Taunton in 2017 as “dreadful”, believes that it is the disciplines learned by batsmen and bowlers alike on good surfaces that lay the foundations for success in tougher circumstances.”All pitches need to produce good cricket, that’s the starting point,” he said. “Batsmen need to bat on surfaces that they can trust, so that they can play their shots and they’re not fearful that there’s a ball coming around the corner with their name on it, and therefore think, well, I’ll be aggressive and try and make it pay until that ball comes along,”And bowlers have got to bowl with discipline. They’ve got to learn to be accurate, as well as spin the ball or bowl with pace, and they’re going to learn those skills by playing on good surfaces.”Earlier this month, the ECB agreed to increase the number of points available for a draw in the County Championship from five to eight, in response to an appeal from Joe Root, England’s captain, for counties to be incentivised to make their games last longer. And Fraser said that he welcomed that change, particularly in light of the retention of the three-group format for this year’s County Championship.”A result of [two-]divisional cricket is the fact that people are willing to roll the dice. If we’ve got seven home games, if we can win four and lose three, it’s better than winning two and drawing four and losing one, or whatever it might be. And I don’t think that mentality produces decent cricketers.”The conversation we have with Karl [McDermott], our groundsman, is a very short one – just produce the best pitch you can. I want Lord’s to be a good surface, not one where it’s all over in two-and-a-bit days and where 180 is a decent score.”You can’t get funky with pitches. We’ve turned up at some grounds, historically, and there’s saucer-shaped areas outside off stump on the spinners length that look completely different from the rest of the pitch.”To me that’s a very short-term look at things. If we’re trying to produce decent cricketers, we want to play on good surfaces and we want to encourage groundsmen to produce those, rather than compromise by asking them to produce something completely in favour of the home side.”Fraser did acknowledge that the existence of pitches such as Taunton’s could provide players with an insight into the sort of extreme conditions that were encountered in Ahmedabad this winter, and he commended the club on producing both of England’s current first-choice spinners, Dom Bess and Jack Leach.”The conversation we have with our groundsman, is a very short one – just produce the best pitch you can”•Getty ImagesHowever, he reiterated his view that such an approach was merely a short-cut, rather than a solution, to England’s problem of producing enough Test-class spin bowlers to compete in overseas conditions, and cited Bess’ struggles this winter as an example of the lack of grounding he has been offered, despite his opportunities to play.”We get on well with Somerset despite the odd spat,” Fraser said. “As a county we fully respect what they’ve achieved.”When I first came to the Middlesex position, it was to achieve what Somerset are doing, and compete all competitions on a regular basis. But if you look at the Somerset experiment, how many Somerset batsmen are in the England squad?”The real positive for Somerset is, yes, they’re providing England with two of their spinners, including Dom Bess, whom I picked as an England selector. But, not that I’ve spoken to the coach, but Bess got dropped because they were worried about his discipline. And the fact that he bowled too many bad balls.”The Indian spinners were able to exploit those pitches, but I’m sure they play on a lot of flat pitches that don’t offer the spinners a lot of help too, so that they have to bowl with the discipline that’s required.”The Somerset surface angle is one that is often mentioned when you look at an Ahmedabad situation, but has it has it provided England with the cricketers that have allowed us to go to India to win a series?”I’m not having a go at the situation there, I’m just looking at it logically, in the same way that playing on a green seamer at Lord’s might give a false account of a fast bowler. If it’s been an overcast summer, such a player is then likely to get exposed at Test level, because they’re playing on flatter pitches against better batsman.”

Man Utd hold internal talks about signing "amazing" forward after Zirkzee

With their deal to sign Joshua Zirkzee seemingly edging closer and closer, Manchester United have now reportedly held internal talks about welcoming another attacking addition this summer.

Man Utd transfer news

Even without an official new signing through the door as of yet, Manchester United have been stealing the headlines in recent weeks for their potential transfer business. The Red Devils have been linked with both Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt in recent weeks and both players have reportedly given the green light to complete moves to Old Trafford once an agreement is reached with their respective clubs.

They are two Dutchmen some United fans may get the chance to see up close in England's Euro 2024 semi-final clash against the Netherlands if they feature, while their interest shows that those at Old Trafford certainly aren't messing around this summer. Zirkzee, in particular, has the potential to become an important player under Erik ten Hag, who must ensure that his attack is revived ahead of next season.

Too often in the last campaign, the Manchester United manager was left watching a disjointed frontline unable to show any signs of threatening, even against those in the Premier League's bottom half. Now, however, he looks likely to welcome Zirkzee to help boost that attack – and he may even get one more forward through the door.

According to The Athletic, Manchester United have held internal discussions about signing Ivan Toney from Brentford this summer. The England international has been tipped to leave the Bees for some time and may now finally get his move.

dominic-solanke-ivan-toney-tottenham-opinion

That said, it remains to be seen just how much Brentford demand for their forward, who was once reportedly valued at £100m. Whether United are in a position to spend such money if that remains their asking price is currently unknown, especially after potential deals for Zirkzee and De Ligt.

"Amazing" Toney would become Man Utd star

Manchester United's recent history of big-money signings suggests that they ought to be more careful in the transfer market, but Toney is not one they should need to worry about flopping if they push for a deal this summer. The Brentford star is rarely fazed, as proved by his ice-cold penalty in England's recent shootout win against Switzerland. And a move to Manchester United could only likely take his rise to stardom to another level next season.

However, Thomas Frank may not be too keen to lose his star striker, having previously told the official Brentford website: "Ivan is amazing in many, many aspects.

"The way he copes with pressure and distractions is amazing. He’s been scoring goals, performing for the team and driving the team. He’s remarkable.

"I can only talk about the Ivan that I see every day around the place and he’s a fantastic person around the group.

"He’s got that unique emotional intelligence to be aware of all the players, and every staff member. Ivan trains well and he’s clearly the number two striker in England, that’s proven by his goals and performances."

Bid accepted: "Outstanding" £75k-a-week Everton player on the verge of exit

An "absolutely outstanding" Everton player has reportedly seen a bid accepted for him by a European club, with a medical already being lined up.

Everton transfer news

This summer is a case of the Blues making new signings but also trying to keep hold of important current players, even though that may be difficult for them to comply with the league's PSR guidelines.

Jarrad Branthwaite is one such figure who could be sacrificed, being linked with a move to Manchester United, and Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards has apparently been lined up to replace him, being backed to play for England one day.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

Similarly, star midfielder Amadou Onana could also need to be replaced, with a switch to another Premier League club mooted throughout the summer to date, and Leicester City ace Wilfred Ndidi has emerged as a strong option to come in for the Belgian, filling the void left by him in the middle of the park.

Seamus Coleman isn't the force he used to be for Everton at right-back, which is only natural given his age, and Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka is reportedly being lined up to come in during the current transfer window. He found himself behind Diogo Dalot in the pecking order at Old Trafford last season, and his expert one-on-one defending could make him a shrewd addition for Sean Dyche.

"Outstanding" Everton man closes in on exit

According to a new report from Football Insider, Ben Godfrey is on the verge of leaving Everton for Atalanta, with their improved bid for him accepted. It is claimed that the Englishman "will arrive in Milan at 10am on Friday to undergo an Atalanta medical and finalise personal terms", with a fee of "£9m including add-ons" agreed.

Everton player Ben Godfrey

This does feel like the right time for Godfrey to move on and enjoy a fresh challenge, not only allowing him more regular football but also ensuring that Everton receive a healthy amount of money for his services.

The 26-year-old hasn't been considered a key man under Dyche, only starting 13 out of a possible 38 Premier League games last season, although there could be a risk in selling the defender, considering Rio Ferdinand once heaped praise on him.

"You’ve got two centre-backs playing at full-backs. Ben Godfrey has been absolutely outstanding. The pace he has shown in the last couple of games…were against Timo Werner, Chelsea, the last game against Arsenal.

"You look at the pace of the kid. Pepe, £72m worth, I am sure Mr Godfrey would be looking at his pocket and thinking ‘where is he? Someone causing me a bit of friction in my pocket."

ByJoe Nuttall Jun 28, 2024

That being said, it is still the right decision by Everton, and it will be interesting to see how the £75,000-a-week Godfrey fares in Italy. He should be remembered as a solid servant for the Blues, making 93 appearances since arriving from Norwich City back in 2020, and the hope is that the funds can be used to bring in a superior replacement.

The Canada international is into the last year of his contract at Bayern and now claims negotiations over a new deal there are 'stalling'. The report adds United made an enquiry about the 23-year-old earlier this month and their interest is becoming more concrete. However, Los Blancos still seem the favourites to recruit the left-back when his contract expires next summer.

Davies has, arguably, proven to be one of the best left-backs in the world over the past few years and his contract situation has attracted the interest of Madrid, United, and Barcelona, too. At the end of this season, he will be a free agent and will have a wealth of enticing options to choose from.

WHAT HIS AGENT SAID

Davies' agent, Nick Huoseh, told recently: "I will not throw insults around when discussing Alphonso's future. My priority is Alphonso's future. I have always said: If Bayern want to discuss something, we can talk about it in the boardroom."

Arsenal ready to accept £30m bid for £200,000-p/w player in talks to leave

After falling short in the Premier League title race for a second consecutive campaign last season, Arsenal are reportedly ready to ruthlessly show the door to one of Mikel Arteta's midfielders this summer.

Arsenal transfer news

The Gunners are undoubtedly on the rise, but last season showed that they're still in need of certain changes if they are to finally dethrone Manchester City next season. On that front, the headlines have already started to form too, with Benjamin Sesko linked with a move, before reportedly deciding to stay put at RB Leipzig for at least another season.

It's no secret that Arsenal are in pursuit of a striker, however, after consistent signs that Gabriel Jesus doesn't have the clinical nature in front of goal that more out-and-out goalscorers have in abundance. Just where that leaves the former Manchester City star at The Emirates should a striker come in remains to be seen, but if he is shown the door, he may not be the only one to depart in the coming months.

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Arsenal are now ready to accept an offer in the region of £30m to sell Thomas Partey this summer. The defensive midfielder, who earns £200k-a-week, is reportedly in talks with a team from Saudi Arabia over a huge contract. In a deal that could suit all parties, those in North London may find themselves with a space to fill in the middle of the park this summer.

There was a stage in which Partey was one of Arsenal's most important players, but a mix of injuries and the arrival of Declan Rice quickly saw the former Atletico Madrid man lose his place under Arteta. Now, it looks increasingly likely that he'll lose his position at the club altogether in the coming months.

Injuries caught up to "fantastic" Partey

The arrival of Rice was the nail in the coffin already lowered when it came to Partey's time at Arsenal. The midfielder's injury record turned a reliable player into a problem for Arteta to solve using the transfer window and the Spaniard hasn't looked back since. As for Partey, meanwhile, he looks on course to bow out with more of a whimper in North London than anything else.

Missing a total of 40 games in the last two campaigns, which is over one full Premier League season, Partey may well be wondering what might have been, especially after Arteta's early praise. The Arsenal boss told BBC Sport following Arsenal's 2-1 Europa League win at Rapid Vienna in 2020: "I think he held the midfield by himself in the second half when we were a little bit more open. He started to take more chances attacking certain spaces with some players. I think he was fantastic and there is much more to come from him."

Nonetheless, a fresh start could await this summer for both Arsenal and Partey looking to rediscover his best form.

Spurs hold talks over signing "sensational" £60m Maddison upgrade

It's been a long and quite testing first season of Premier League football for Ange Postecoglou this year at Tottenham Hotspur.

The Australian has seen his Spurs side play scintillating and toothless football in equal measure at times over the campaign.

Still, with one match left to go and Europa League football in sight, it would be fair to say he has surpassed the expectations many had of him in August, but fans and pundits alike aren't going to be as forgiving next season.

James Maddison with Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou in the Premier League.

So, with the transfer window right around the corner, he needs to make sure the club get their recruitment right, and that could involve bringing in a player to upgrade on last summer's star signing, James Maddison.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Football Insider journalist Pete O'Rourke, Tottenham have recently 'held discussions' over a move to sign Nottingham Forest's midfield maestro, Morgan Gibbs-White, this summer.

Morgan Gibbs-White

The report has revealed that the Midlands club may be forced to sell some of their star players in a bid to balance the books and that if the Englishman becomes available, the Lilywhites will make their move.

However, it likely won't be as straightforward as that, as Newcastle United are also named as an interested party, and there is the small matter of the price.

Morgan-gibbs-white-nottingham-forest

According to the report, if the Tricky Trees are to sell the talented midfielder, they'll likely do so for a fee in the region of £60m so they can make a profit on the £42.5m that they paid to sign him from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Overall, it would represent a significant investment from the north Londoners, but with Maddison's form not particularly impressive of late and the club having few other options in that role, it's an investment worth making.

How Morgan Gibbs-White compares to James Maddison

Now, if Daniel Levy and Co can get their man in the summer, the fact that he primarily plays as an attacking midfielder means that he'll be in direct competition with Maddison for regular starts, and based on this season, it looks like the Forest ace would come out on top.

For example, from a pure output perspective, the 24-year-old, who data analyst Ben Mattison claimed has "Tottenham written all over him", has scored six goals and provided ten assists in his 41 games this season. In contrast, the Spurs man has racked up just four goals and eight assists in his 29 games.

Moreover, while the former Leicester City star appears to have a better games-to-goal involvement ratio, it should be noted that in his last 17 appearances, he has provided just three assists and scored only one goal. In contrast, the "sensational" Forest man, as described by journalist Josh Bunting, has scored three goals and provided seven assists in 19 games over the same period.

Morgan-Gibbs-White

Moreover, not only is the former Wolves star a more reliable provider of goal involvements, but he's also more reliably fit, as in the last three seasons, he has missed no games through injury, while the Lilywhites Coventry-born dynamo has missed 23.

Ultimately, while Maddison is clearly a talented player, his output has fallen off a cliff since his return from injury, and while Gibbs-White might not hit the same peaks, his more consistent output and cleaner injury record mean he would be the ideal midfielder for Postecoglou to build around next year.

Spurs' £87m 'priority' target could become their own Robin Van Persie

Shan Masood 156 sets stage before Pakistan seamers tear things up

Opener’s 319-ball innings leads Pakistan to 326 before Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Abbas strike

The Report by Valkerie Baynes06-Aug-2020A career-best innings from Shan Masood answered every question England had asked of Pakistan on the first two days of this opening Test.Masood batted for nearly eight hours and faced 319 deliveries for his 156, which highlighted an ability to adapt throughout the course of an innings and effectively told the story of his cricketing life so far.Not long into the evening session, it was Pakistan asking all the questions when Shaheen Shah Afridi trapped Rory Burns lbw with the fourth ball of England’s innings and Mohammad Abbas accounted for Dom Sibley and Ben Stokes to put the hosts under pressure at 12 for 3.By the close, Ollie Pope had played a steadying hand with an unbeaten 46, but it was going to take much more from him and Jos Buttler, who was not out 15, come the third day after Joe Root was dismissed by Yasir Shah for a battling 14.Masood resumed on 46 having played a supporting role to Babar Azam the previous day. As opener, Masood had navigated a tricky start in which Stuart Broad and James Anderson bowled tight opening spells. But England’s bowling attack had lost all potency post-lunch on the first day and Masood and Azam cashed in where possible without taking too many unnecessary risks, save for Masood’s ill-advised charge at Dom Bess which ended in a missed stumping by Buttler. Masood had earlier survived a dropped catch by the wicketkeeper off the same bowler. When Azam failed to add to his overnight score of 69 in the face of some improved England bowling on the second morning, Masood took the lead role, although he could have been upstaged had Shadab Khan not got too flashy and skied Bess straight to Root at mid-on after a knock of 45 from 76 balls that was, until that moment, very sharp. Most impressive from Masood has been his ability to show how far he has come after past disappointments against England – and particularly Anderson – learning from experience and changing for the better.Masood left balls on the fourth-stump line that he would prevoiusly have nicked off to and played with soft hands when he had to so as to avoid offering chances to the slips. So when Anderson struck with his sixth ball of the day, luring Azam into an attempted drive that ended up in the hands of Root at first slip, Masood didn’t panic. When Anderson and Broad bowled six maidens on the trot between them, Masood maintained the patient approach that had got him this far. Indeed, it was Asad Shafiq who scored Pakistan’s solitary run from eight overs bowled by Broad and Anderson in that period.Shafiq fell for to Broad for 7, caught by Stokes at second slip, followed by Mohammad Rizwan, caught behind off Chris Woakes, to leave Pakistan 176 for 5. That brought Shadab to the crease and, having negotiated their way to lunch, Masood adapted after the break. The pair fell into a lovely rhythm of shot-making and nabbing quick singles that frustrated England’s bowlers throughout a sixth-wicket partnership worth 105.England had only conceded 48 runs during the morning session but saw Pakistan regain the momentum immediately after lunch, as Bess and Root bowled ahead of the arrival of the second new ball. Masood then stroked his way through the 90s in half-a-dozen balls to bring up his hundred, loudly celebrated on the Pakistan balcony. The partnership should have been more but Shadab’s wild swing at Bess ended things, although it sparked another change in gears from Masood. What looked like being a rebuilding job, became something else when Jofra Archer dismissed Yasir and Abbas with consecutive balls, the former without adding to his score of 5 when he was dropped by Buttler off the bowling of Bess.Masood flicked the switch, seeking as many runs as he could get before he ran out of partners. He took 16 off one Bess over, including two sixes in three balls, was keen to run a second to bring up his 150 and did when Buttler’s relay shy at the stumps went wide and he wore a Broad short ball painfully on the elbow, all before tea.Masood didn’t last long after the break, falling lbw to a Broad delivery that nipped back and struck the back pad on line with leg stump. But by then he had more than done his job, racking up his third consecutive Test century after tons against Sri Lanka in December and Bangladesh in February, the fourth of his career overall.Pakistan’s bowlers kept up the good work with Abbas particularly damaging in picking up the wickets of Sibley and Stokes for nought in the space of eight balls. The delivery that bowled Stokes was an absolute diamond that found just enough late movement to beat the bat and kiss the top of off stump.Naseem Shah showed his pace with no reward and when Yasir chimed in with a faint edge off Root which went through to the keeper, England were left looking to Pope and Buttler to erase a deficit still north of 250.

Kai Havertz’s incredible form could spell the end for Arsenal’s £68m ace

The Premier League title might still be out of their hands, but Arsenal put in a performance to be proud of on Sunday afternoon as they ran out 3-2 winners away to Tottenham Hotspur.

Mikel Arteta's men, seemingly intent on giving their fans heart attacks, came dangerously close to letting their three-goal lead slip in the second half, but a steely backs-to-the-wall performance saw them through. While things looked a little ropey in the end, their team deserves all the praise they are getting, especially Kai Havertz.

The German, once mocked by rival fans, is now one of the Gunners' most dangerous stars, and he showed that again on Sunday, putting in a performance that could spell trouble for another Arsenal ace.

Kai Havertz's performance vs Tottenham Hotspur

The yardstick often used to gauge how successful big-money signings are is how they perform in the biggest games, and after a week in which Havertz scored two goals against Chelsea and scored and assisted against Tottenham, it would be hard to describe his summer move as anything other than a success.

There is no more sure way of winning over the fans than putting in big performances against rivals, and it feels as if the former Bayer Leverkusen star has now firmly established himself as a fan favourite among the Arsenal faithful.

His display on Sunday impressed more than just his travelling support, though, as the Standard's Simon Collings gave the 24-year-old a 9/10 on the day, writing that he put in 'one of his best performances in an Arsenal shirt', an opinion that's hard to disagree with.

That said, if anyone needed any more convincing, they'd just have to take a look at the striker's numbers from the game. In his 96 minutes of action, the Aachen-born ace scored one goal, provided one assist, took 46 touches, made two key passes, created one big chance, eight out of ten aerial duels, won two fouls and made one tackle.

In all, it was a genuinely impressive showing from a player who had, up until this week, split opinion, and while he's likely cemented his place in the starting lineup for the season's remaining games, his brilliant form might just have signalled the beginning of the end for one of his teammates.

Havertz's excellent form is bad news for Gabriel Jesus

Yes, while Leandro Trossard was comfortably Arsenal's worst attacker on the day – picking up a 4/10 from Football FanCast for his efforts – the player who could be at risk of losing his spot in the team thanks to Havertz's form is Gabriel Jesus.

Now, the former Manchester City ace is an incredibly talented player and one who should be playing for a Champions League side – his record of 32 goals in 46 games in the competition is evidence enough of that – but his time as an Arsenal player may well be coming to a close, at least if the Gunners bring in another quality number nine in the summer, that is.

The North Londoners have been linked to a plethora of frontmen already this year, such as Ivan Toney, Viktor Gyokeres, Joshua Zirkzee, and Victor Osimhen. If they do bring any of them through the door in the summer, it seems incredibly unlikely that they would also keep both Jesus and Havertz.

So, with that in mind, how do the pair stack up with one another? Well, when it comes to pure output, it's the recent arrival who comes out ahead, with 13 goals and six assists in 48 appearances – 32 of which were in midfield – to the Brazilian's eight goals and seven assists in 33 appearances.

What about their underlying numbers, then? Does the São Paulo-born ace come out on top there? Unfortunately for the 27-year-old, while he comes out better in certain metrics such as non-penalty expected goals and assists, progressive carries and assists all per 90, he is once again second-best overall, per FBref.

For example, while the "magnificent" German, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, registers a lower non-penalty expected goal and assists figure, he scores more often, produces more progressive passes, has a far better goal-to-shots-on-target ratio, maintains a better passing accuracy, produces more goal-creating actions, recovers more balls and wins far more aerial duels, all per 90.

Ultimately, while Jesus is an undeniably gifted forward, if Arsenal can get anywhere near his €80m – £68m – valuation from the CIES Football Observatory this summer, they should consider selling him as if another striker is signed, it seems unlikely that he would be able to displace them and Havertz as well.

Arteta could instantly drop Arsenal ace who won just 1/10 duels v Spurs

It wasn’t the best day at the office for the experienced international.
