‘Não era o resultado que a gente esperava. A gente veio em busca da vitória. Fizemos um bom jogo, criamos mais, chegamos com mais perigo. Mas é importante conseguir o empate. 'Relaxed' Gayle sets the BPL alight

He made two fifties earlier in the season, but come the big game, he stood up with a belligerent hundred that took Rangpur Riders one step closer to the BPL trophy

Mohammad Isam08-Dec-2017

Chris Gayle has a hit in the nets•Dhaka Tribune

There is no discernible change between a struggling Chris Gayle and a dominant one, according to his captain at Rangpur Riders, Mashrafe Mortaza. Famous for being calm with economy of movement on and off the field, Gayle feasted on Khulna Titans’ young bowling attack, striking 126 off only 51 balls to lead his team another step closer to the BPL trophy.”There’s no difference [between the two Gayles],” Mashrafe said. “He likes to stay relaxed and sleep in his room. I think this is what gives him the advantage to stay relaxed in the field. I have seen him in the earlier edition of the BPL too, but I hardly saw any change in his mentality. He is always calm before batting, pads up slowly and goes to the field.”With the rest of his routine remaining same, it is often the feel of bat on ball that gets Gayle going. Mahmudullah, the Khulna captain, said that they tried to give him less room to swing his arms, bowling as straight as possible and using a lot of change of pace. But nothing worked on the day.”The plan was to deprive him of room,” Mahmudullah said. “He can spread his wings when you give him room. There is fewer options apart from bowling stump-to-stump and mixing up the pace. We didn’t start well with the ball, and overall it wasn’t a good bowling effort.”Gayle launched 14 sixes and six fours in an unbeaten innings, contributing nearly 75% of his team’s total. But the Rangpur dressing room was too nervous to soak it all in. “The dressing room still remained tense when Gayle started hitting them big,” Mashrafe said. “I think we felt better when we reached the safe zone; the dressing room only cools down when the runs flow.”Part of that reaction was because Rangpur’s batting has not been as reliable as it could have been this season. Mashrafe even said: “I was sure that it would have been difficult for us if Gayle got out early. I think we were lucky that he stepped up today. But he made two contributions in difficult situation and difficult wicket, which helped us in a big way.”

Man Utd Could Finally Bin Van de Beek For £1.1k-p/w Gem

A key feature of Erik ten Hag's Manchester United tenure so far has been the Dutchman's ruthless streak, with the former Ajax boss having notably shown Cristiano Ronaldo the door last season following the striker's bombshell interview with Piers Morgan, while also calling time on David De Gea's 12-year stint at Old Trafford earlier this summer.

The 53-year-old also looks set to allow Harry Maguire to join West Ham United after stripping the Englishman of the captaincy, while Brazilian enigma, Fred, is another who appears to be up for grabs after spending the last five years in Manchester.

It looks as if no one is truly safe from the axe with Ten Hag in charge, with the experienced coach also seemingly set to allow Donny van de Beek to move on before the September deadline, despite the playmaker having thrived under his compatriot during their time together in Amsterdam.

Will Van de Beek leave Man United this summer?

According to recent reports, the 26-year-old has been the subject of interest from Real Sociedad as his nightmare stint in English football looks set to be coming to a close, with the £40m signing having scored just twice and provided only two assists in 60 games in all competitions for the Red Devils.

Read the latest Manchester United transfer news HERE…

Despite previously chipping in with 75 goals and assists in 175 games in all competitions during his time in the Eredivisie, Van de Beek has since been unable to enjoy a consistent run of games since being snapped up by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and co back in 2020, having notably missed the second half of last season after suffering an unfortunate injury blow in January.

In what has been a rather luckless three years for the midfielder, in truth, the one-time Everton loanee has hardly impressed when he has featured in a United shirt, with journalist Samuel Luckhurst suggesting last year that playing the Netherlands international simply "doesn't work".

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek.

With Van de Beek likely to be on his way sooner rather than later, it may well provide a chance for Hannibal Mejbri to stake a claim for a more prominent role in the first-team squad, although the Tunisian isn't the only youngster who could be deserving of a promotion, with Isak Hansen-Aaroen also catching the eye of late.

Who is Isak Hansen-Aaroen?

The former Tromso starlet is yet to make a senior, competitive appearance since signing for United back in 2019, although at the age of just 18, the Norwegian maestro still has time on his side to force his way into Ten Hag's thinking over the coming years.

The teenage talent did take his chance to impress during the pre-season encounter with rivals Leeds United last month, with Manchester Evening News journalist Rich Fay writing that the £1.1k-per-week gem was 'direct and dangerous whenever he got on the ball in front of a noisy home crowd'.

That rare outing was followed up by another sparkling cameo against Lyon a week later in Edinburgh, with MEN's Steven Railston also writing glowing about the playmaker's performance, stating: 'His passing was progressive and he looked to initiate attacks whenever in possession.'

Erik ten Hag

Previously part of United's FA Youth Cup-winning side back in 2022, the Norway U19 international has been dubbed a "beautiful footballer" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, with the respected insider also writing that the precocious prospect "has football in his veins".

That has come amid hefty praise from his former Tromso teammate Yttergard Jenssen, who has previously likened Hansen-Aaroen to his compatriot, Martin Odegaard:

"I realised that this was a talented boy already in the first training. He has some skills that are completely raw. He's so playful with the ball. And the way he moves on a football field… There's something artistic about it. He is a bit reminiscent of Martin Odegaard."

While yet to prove himself on the senior stage at the Theatre of Dreams, it would be no surprise if Hansen-Aaroen were to follow in Alejandro Garnacho's footsteps and cement his place in Ten Hag's squad moving forward, with the likely exit of Van de Beek set to leave a space up for grabs in those attacking midfield berths.

Nottingham Forest Could Sign "Phenomenal" Keeper

American international Matt Turner is a "serious candidate for Nottingham Forest" this summer, which could see the potential Dean Henderson deal collapse, per transfers expert Fabrizio Ronmano.

Is Matt Turner joining Nottingham Forest this summer?

In stark contrast to last year, Forest have only paid for two new signings so far this summer; Chris Wood from Newcastle United, who cost £15m and Anthony Elanga from Manchester United, who also cost £15m.

It looks like two could very quickly become three, however, as the Tricky Trees appear set to sign a new number one in the coming weeks.

United's Henderson has been touted for a move to the City Ground for much of the last 12 months following a loan spell last season, but in a surprising turn of events, Steve Cooper's side could be about to sign USMNT star Turner instead.

matt-turner-nottingham-forest-arsenal-transfer-gossip-cooper-joe-worrall

According to The Athletic, Arsenal's potential signing of Brentford's number one, David Raya, could open the door to the 29-year-old's exit, with Forest already in dialogue with him.

As with most deals, the most significant barrier to completion is the club's differing valuations. Arsenal are said to want £18m, considerably more than the Garibaldi would be willing to pay.

While there is still some way to go before a price can be agreed upon, the move certainly threatens to scupper Henderson's chance at returning to the City Ground, per transfers expert Fabrizio Romano.

He explained the situation on his YouTube channel, saying:

"Arsenal are going on David Raya because Matt Turner has a chance to go to Nottingham Forest, and this could see the Dean Henderson deal collapse.

"So, let's see who is going to win this race to be the new Nottingham Forest goalkeeper, Matt Turner or Dean Henderson.

"But at the moment, Turner is a serious candidate for Nottingham Forest on a permanent transfer, so this is the idea."

How does Matt Turner compare to Dean Henderson?

With the two keepers potentially vying for the single spot at Forest this summer, who would be the better transfer?

The first thing to note is that neither player made many appearances last season. Turner started 13 games across all competitions as he struggled to dislodge Aaron Ramsdale at the Emirates, whereas Henderson started just 18 games due to an injury partway through the campaign.

That said, if we just took last season, the American comes out slightly ahead with an average rating of 6.73 and passing accuracy of 72.3%, per WhoScored. On the other hand, the once-capped Englishman averaged a rating of just 6.57 and a pretty poor passing accuracy of 56.8%, also per WhoScored.

Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

When it comes to their underlying numbers, it is a bit more even, with the "insane" United man edging it 75.4% to 73.8% for save percentage and 39.5% to 22.5% for clean sheet percentage, per FBref.

However, the former MLS star comes out on top when it comes to passing ability, averaging 21 completed passes per 90 to Henderson's 15.2, and a total passing distance of 652.9 yards per 90 compared to just 540.3, also per FBref.

Ultimately, it looks like Cooper and Forest can't really lose regardless of which keeper they opt for, but perhaps with the "phenomenal" Turner, there is slightly more upside in his ball-playing ability.

CA proposes arbitration to resolve pay dispute

Cricket Australia has proposed independent arbitration with the Australian Cricketers’ Association if the ongoing pay dispute is not resolved by early next week

Daniel Brettig and Brydon Coverdale27-Jul-20172:27

Brettig: CA under pressure from lot of sectors

Australia’s cricketers have been offered rollover contracts under the previous MoU as well as a process of independent arbitration to end a bitter pay war, which might ultimately help secure the status of future series against Bangladesh, India and the home Ashes. In a dramatic departure from Cricket Australia’s (CA) stated policy of keeping pay negotiations private, the board’s chief executive, James Sutherland, laid out the proposal on Thursday afternoon in the hope of sidestepping a looming firestorm of commercial and cricketing chaos.”What we’re proposing out of this is that we do go into some intensive discussions over the next few days that will hopefully see the matter come to resolution,” Sutherland said. “Failing that, we believe that the best course of action is to get the matter resolved through arbitration, get the show on the road and move on.”I think what we’ve put forward here is a good solution. It’s a fair-minded solution. It highlights where we’re up to. There’s no doubt there’s a bit of an impasse here, but I believe that with positive intent and the right people in the room, we can get this sorted in the next few days. Failing that, we’re prepared to say that we’ll put the issues to arbitration, we’ll accept the umpire’s decision, and the game goes on.”Critically, CA is prepared to pay male players under the terms of the most recent MoU while remunerating the women under the vastly improved financial terms of their recent proposals. It is not yet decided whether back pay would be given to more than 230 players, who were left out of contract when the previous agreement expired on July 1. Similar uncertainty looms over what will happen to more than A$58 million in adjustment ledger payments due to all past and present male players, who held contracts between 2012 and 2017.In proposing a short period of intensive talks, Sutherland also revealed CA’s preference for independent arbitration should these discussions fail. It was the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) that first proposed mediated negotiations between Sutherland and his opposite number Alistair Nicholson on May 12, the same day CA sent out a letter, warning that players would be unemployed if no deal was reached by June 30.CA does not want the arbitration to be conducted by the Fair Work Commission, Australia’s official industrial relations umpire. They prefer an eminent individual, agreed upon by both parties, who, in Sutherland’s words could be “someone like a retired supreme court judge”. At the same time, the contract rollovers would remove the threat of further tour cancellations, which is both the players’ strongest point of leverage but also the source of the most long-lasting damage to the game. Both parties came close to agreement recently, but CA’s continued reluctance to accept the concept of revenue sharing led the ACA to take their own “peace plan” to all contracted players and the public; in turn CA floated their counter-proposal via a report in the . CA has grown increasingly worried by the rapidly shrinking amount of time available to solve the impasse without major dislocation. Sutherland, on his part, suggested the ACA had been stalling in order to enhance its bargaining power.CA chairman David Peever and CEO James Sutherland (file photo)•IDI/Getty Images”I think the concern that I’ve tried to reflect in talking today is that we seem to be bogged down at times in process and strategies that are perhaps designed to slow things down,” Sutherland said. “Certainly from our perspective we see the urgency and I think cricket fans see the urgency. I think cricket fans are probably tired of talking about it and reading about it in the newspaper. We need the show to get back on the road.”I’m raising the fact that I have increasing concerns about timelines. We’ve got a tour coming up against Bangladesh, and I think it’s really important that this issue is resolved right now, or in the short term. What we believe is we’ve got a fair mechanism to do that. Best intents and compromise on both parts will see the matter resolved in the next few days. Both parties involved in the debate have consulted with figures steeped in Australian industrial relations law. Greg Combet, the former Labor government minister and former head of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, has advised the ACA. CA’s negotiation team has included the former IR commissioner, Ken Bacon, who has also consulted for the mining company Rio Tinto, where the CA chairman David Peever worked as managing director. The seriousness of the dispute has been underlined by the fact that the federal sports minister, Greg Hunt, contacted both CA and the ACA to urge a swift resolution.Sutherland said that the game could not be placed in a state of paralysis by the stand-off. The ACA’s most recent submission to CA included a prospective heads of agreement and draft versions of short-term contracts for the Test squad for Bangladesh, where the customary pre-tour security visit by CA and ACA representatives is currently taking place. Sutherland said these contracts, in particular, left room for considerable doubt about the tour’s status.”I don’t want to go into specific detail except to say that it leaves unresolved issues in such a way that the players may choose to not tour. Clearly we don’t want that situation. The Australian team is about to tour Bangladesh. It’s a very important tour. It’s very important for Bangladesh, it’s very important for Australia. We need that tour to go ahead, and we also need to start proper preparations for the summer of cricket ahead, both for domestic players and international players as well.Responding to CA’s offer, an ACA spokesman criticised the board’s late realisation of the need for urgency. However, he indicated the ACA would examine CA’s terms and maintain talks between Sutherland and Nicholson.”In the spirit of doing all we can to resolve the dispute, the ACA will examine the correspondence provided by CA and any suggested parameters for arbitration before making further comment. And will continue to work intensively in the CEO-to-CEO negotiations which are currently taking place with a view to achieving resolution.”

ZC managing director Mukondiwa to retire

Wilfred Mukondiwa, Zimbabwe Cricket’s (ZC) managing director, has retired. Former ICC chief financial officer Faisal Hasnain will take over the role

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Apr-2017Faisal Hasnain, the outgoing chief financial officer of the ICC, is set to become the new managing director of Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC). Hasnain will take over from Wilfred Mukondiwa who will step down from his position in June as he has reached the age of retirement. The ICC announced Hasnain was leaving in December 2016, having worked at the organisation for 12 years over two stints. He has been replaced at the game’s governing body by Ankur Khanna, who was the CFO at an Indian airline. Over the years in his role at the ICC Hasnain worked closely with ZC.”While we regret losing Mr Mukondiwa’s active leadership and guidance, the board is pleased to appoint Mr Hasnain to the role of managing director,” ZC chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said. “We believe his impressive résumé, experience and desire to succeed equip him well for the challenges ahead, and we are confident that he will build upon the strong foundation that Mr Mukondiwa is leaving.”Mukondiwa, 64, joined the ZC in 2003, as general manager for human resources and domestic cricket, and over the years has also worked as board secretary and deputy managing director. He has been in the current role since 2012.”I have had an enriching experience at ZC and in the sporting industry in general,” Mukondiwa said. “My tenure was punctuated with various challenges which I believe, if all stakeholders were united and shared a common sense of purpose, are not insurmountable but of a temporary nature. In that regard, it is gratifying to see the player base growing and young players coming into the limelight. This is a positive development for the future.”

Strong South Africa to test New Zealand's T20 form

ESPNcricinfo previews the one-off T20I between New Zealand and South Africa at Eden Park

Start time 7.00pm local (0600GMT)Glenn Phillips will make his debut at the top of the order for New Zealand•Getty ImagesThe Big PictureNew Zealand have dispatched Pakistan, Bangladesh and Australia at home this season but the visit of South Africa is the meat of their summer. We should know a fair amount more about Kane Williamson’s New Zealand by the end of March.Whether the tour actually gets going on Friday night is another issue. Rain lashed Auckland on the final practice day – it has already disrupted South Africa’s first few days here with the warm-up match washed – and it currently appears touch-and-go if it will clear in time for a full match.One-off T20s are pretty meaningless in the grander scheme of things, especially so far away from the next World T20, and Faf du Plessis said pretty much that at his arrival press conference. However, cricket should be about the spectators as well as the players and, if the weather plays ball and the crowd swells into the ground, it should be a lively Friday evening. The only part of South Africa’s home season that did not go to plan was the T20 series against Sri Lanka when a second-string side were overturned 2-1. This time the side will closely resemble the powerhouse one-day unit; whether that translates into the performance remains to be seen. For New Zealand in T20 there is a sense of getting a glimpse at the future. Tom Bruce came in against Bangladesh, left-armer Ben Wheeler returned and Tom Blundell also featured. Blundell has made way for the fit-again Luke Ronchi, but 20-year Glenn Phillips has been rewarded for his stellar Super Smash tournament.Form guide(completed matches, most recent first)

South AfricaLLWWLIn the spotlightColin Munro has lost his place in the ODI squad after two failures at the hands of Australia, but two international innings previously he had notched his maiden hundred with 101 off 57 balls in the second T20 against Bangladesh. That century came in the middle of two ducks in the same series, then a brief trip to the BBL was not hugely successful before his twin failures against Australia. His last outing in domestic cricket was at least a half-century, but he remains a hit or miss player.Quinton de Kock was one of a host of first-choice players given the Sri Lanka T20 series off and how he was missed at the top of the order. Although one half-century in 29 innings may seem a little underwhelming for someone who has played all but three of those as an opener (he has, though, passed 25 in 17 of those innings) he can light the powderkeg for an innings as was witnessed at the World T20 against England when he scored that lone fifty.Team newsThe 20-year-old Phillips will open in the absence of Martin Guptill, while Kane Williamson indicated that Nos. 3 to 5 in the order would remain the same as the Bangladesh series. That could mean a decision between Jimmy Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme although much will depend on if the game is reduced due to rain.New Zealand (possible) 1 Kane Williamson (capt), 2 Glenn Phillips, 3 Colin Munro, 4 Tom Bruce, 5 Corey Anderson, 6 Colin de Grandhomme, 7 Luke Ronchi (wk), 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Ben Wheeler, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Trent BoultSouth Africa will make a late decision over the fitness of David Miller after the finger injury he picked up against Sri Lanka. If he is fit to play it would likely mean Farhaan Behardien, who captained South Africa in their previous series, missing out.South Africa (possible) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 AB de Villiers, 4 Faf du Plessis (capt), 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller/Farhaan Behardien, 7 Chris Morris, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Andile Phehlukwayo, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Imran TahirPitch and conditionsEden Park equals endless mentions of short boundaries. Yes, they are still short straight. It doesn’t mean batsmen always take advantage, though. While the weather forecast is poor there is the potential for it to clear up during the afternoon and the ground does have top-quality drainage. The pitch is unlikely to suffer although if there is play under cloudy skies the ball could swing, while a damp ball would be hard for the spinners.Stats and trivia These two teams have played 14 T20Is against each other: South Africa lead 10-4 Despite the often-referenced short boundaries, the average score batting first in T20Is at Eden Park is a fairly modest 166. The highest total, made twice, is 214 by Australia (in the first ever T20) and England in 2013. Phillips will play for New Zealand before he has played a first-class game for Auckland.Quotes”I’ve been working really hard. It’s not easy to go in every series and try to perform but as long as I’m doing well for the team, as long as the captain and boys are happy, then I’m happy.”
“We want to hit the ground running tomorrow night. It’s a shame about the build-up and the weather, but we’ve been in camp for a while and every team has been playing a huge amount of cricket so nice to come off a little break.”

Taylor hits second fifty after eye surgery to power Central Districts

Central Districts overcame a shaky start to beat Canterbury by 27 runs after Ross Taylor struck 80 to remain table toppers

ScorecardFile photo – Ross Taylor cracked five fours and six sixes in his 80 off 50•Getty ImagesAfter a month away from the game to have a benign growth removed from his left eye, Ross Taylor had returned with a bang. He followed up his unbeaten 82 off 41 against Auckland with another match-winning effort of 80 off 50 for Central Districts against Canterbury in the Super Smash 2016-17.Central Districts chose to bat, and suffered big blow early on losing Mahela Jayawardene for 4. They were on shaky ground when they lost captain Will Young an over later to be reduced to 17 for 2, but Taylor walked in and settled things down for them along with opener George Worker. Worker fell to the legspin of Todd Astle one short of a fifty, but not before adding 78 at nine to the over with Taylor to beat Canterbury back. From thereon, Canterbury managed to strike regular blows at one end, but Taylor held his up remarkably well, slamming six sixes in his 50-ball knock that ended in the final over of the innings.Chasing 191, five of Canterbury’s top six got off to starts, but none could kick on. With no one to anchor the innings, the chase was repeatedly dented by wickets and fell away. They were bowled out with five balls to spare, well short of the target, with fast bowler Seth Rance cutting through their middle with four wickets. The win opened up Central Districts’ lead on the points table – they now have six wins and 26 points in nine games, an eight-point lead over No. 2 Northern Districts.

Record-breaking Satterthwaite seals 5-0 sweep for New Zealand

Satterthwaite became the first woman to score three consecutive centuries in ODIs, as she struck a 99-ball 123 to lead New Zealand women to victory in the final ODI to seal the series 5-0

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsFile photo – Amy Satterthwaite opened the innings and scored 123 off 99 balls•IDI/Getty ImagesAmy Satterthwaite led New Zealand women – as captain, and with the bat – to a win in the last match of the ODI series against Pakistan in Nelson, helping them complete a 5-0 series sweep.Satterthwaite became the first woman to score three centuries in consecutive innings in ODIs. Opening in place of regular captain Suzie Bates, who sat out of the game, Satterthwaite struck 18 fours in her 99-ball 123 after Pakistan had won the toss and set New Zealand 221 to win. New Zealand chased it down in the 39th over.Earlier, medium-pacer Thamsyn Newton and 16-year-old legspinner Amelia Kerr both picked up career-best figures – Newton took 5 for 31, Kerr took 4 for 42 – to subdue Pakistan after they had got off to a strong start. Ayesha Zafar (50), Javeria Khan (50) and Nahida Khan (31), the top three in the order, were responsible for that. But Newton and Kerr struck regularly as Pakistan went from 157 for 2 to to being bowled out for 220 in the 50th over.New Zealand’s chase was powered by Satterthwaite, who scored most more than half the runs required, having begun by monopolising an opening partnership of 73 with Sam Curtis (9) that took only 9.2 overs. She then put on 53 for the fourth wicket with Katie Perkins – the second-highest scorer, with her 23 – to bring New Zealand within 35 runs of the target before Sadia Yousuf (3-49) broke the stand. The left-arm spinner dismissed Satterthwaite shortly after, but New Zealand had no trouble chasing the target down. When asked about what the record means to her, Satterthwaite said she was happy, but New Zealand’s performance as a team had impressed her more, particularly in the absence of some stalwarts.”It’s always nice to achieve something like that, but at the end of the day, you just want to put your best performances to contribute to a team win,” Satterthwaite said. “It was great for our team to get a win without having Suzie (Bates) and Rachel (Priest). They’re important players for us and to perform like that without them was great.”This was both teams’ last ICC Women’s Championship fixture, and the win sealed third spot for New Zealand. Pakistan finished in seventh place.
