New Zealand call up Matt Henry as cover for Finn Allen in Bangladesh

Matt Henry has been called up to New Zealand’s T20I squad in Bangladesh as cover for Finn Allen who tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this week.Although not a like-for-like player, the fact Henry has had both doses of vaccine and already had a place booked in managed isolation for his return to New Zealand, due to being part of the ODI squad to face Pakistan, meant he was the most logical replacement.New Zealand also opted against calling up any of the players still currently in the UK due to the need for a seven-day isolation period on arriving in Bangladesh.Related

“Matt’s clearly not a like-for-like replacement for Finn, but he expands our selection options and, in the current circumstances, is the best equipped to join the side at such short notice,” head coach Gary Stead, who is missing the tours of Bangladesh and Pakistan, said.”And, in the current environment, we remain mindful of the need to carefully balance player workloads,” he said. “We’re not prepared to risk anyone’s well-being by asking them to commit to extremely long periods away from home.”Allen, who is currently in quarantine and being monitored by the New Zealand team doctor Pat McHugh, will remain with the squad. Stead said he had improved in recent days and there remained hope that he could be available for the later matches against Bangladesh.Henry has played just six T20Is in his career with his last outing coming in 2017. The first match of the series against Bangladesh is on September 1.

Mark Boucher to respond to SJN allegations

Contrary to local reports, ESPNcricinfo understands Boucher has not taken legal action against those who mentioned him in their testimonies

Firdose Moonda30-Jul-2021Mark Boucher, South Africa’s men’s national coach, will make a submission to Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) Social Justice and Nation-Building (SJN) project in response to allegations in which he has been implicated. Although CSA as an organisation will not comment on the SJN proceedings while they are ongoing, Boucher in his personal capacity confirmed his intention to co-operate with and support the SJN.”I have been asked by the SJN to submit a written reply to the various allegations made during the hearings that have taken place. The documents that I have been furnished with, as well as the various reports in the media require my full attention and consideration, which I will be giving to them over the course of the next week,” Boucher said. “My intentions are to cooperate fully with all requests made by the Ombudsman, so that the objectives of the SJN can be achieved.”Related

Boucher’s name has cropped up in a few statements by former players at the SJN hearings on racial discrimination in the game, leading to questions asked about him by the ombudsman Advocate Dumisa Ntsebeza. Some testimonies imply the involvement of Boucher, usually as part of a group of players, in some of the incidents that have come out. The culture of the national team, particularly in the 1990s and 2000s and specifically at the 2007 World Cup, has come under scrutiny through stories from former players Paul Adams, Roger Telemachus and Loots Bosman. While it is not clear how many of the members of those teams will present to the SJN it is expected that those with current involvement in South African cricket are likely to exercise the right of reply afforded to anyone who has been named in the proceedings.Boucher was first asked for a reaction to the SJN testimony following South Africa’s 3-0 victory over Ireland in the T20I series last week, when his name was mentioned at the hearings. Then, he said: “I fully respect the sensitivity around this. I am not going to give a knee-jerk response. I will go back home, assess the information that’s on the table, that’s available to me and I will reply respectfully and appropriately to all of the allegations. And at the right time as well. I need to get home and have a look at what’s been said and then I will come through with a response.”Contrary to local reports, ESPNcricinfo understands Boucher has not taken legal action against those who mentioned him in their testimonies. He called accusations of seeking the legal way out “hurtful, factually incorrect and do not serve the greater good of our country or the intentions of the SJN in mending past hurts and building relations.”As things stand, a date and time for Boucher’s submission at the SJN has yet to be confirmed.

Southampton targeting move for "brilliant" £20k-a-week Premier League ace

Southampton are eyeing a late summer move for a "brilliant" Premier League player, according to a report from journalist Darren Witcoop.

Southampton transfer news

Saints supporters will be delighted with some of the transfer business the club have completed this summer, including bringing in Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes on permanent deals, but they will still want further signings to come in this month.

One new report has claimed that Mateus Fernandes is closing in on a move to St Mary's Stadium, with the Sporting CP midfielder coming in as an exciting young addition. Still only 20, he has represented Portugal at youth team level and could be seen as an eye-catching acquisition for many years to come.

Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas has also been mentioned as a summer option for Southampton, as Russell Martin looks to sign an upgrade on Alex McCarthy between the sticks. The Englishman has been a good servant for the south coast club, but it has to be argued that he isn't at the level required to be a Premier League starter week in, week out.

Saints are also thought to have submitted an offer for young Antwerp midfielder Mandela Keita, as they look to add more options in the middle of the park.

Southampton keen on "brilliant" Premier League ace

Taking to X, Witcoop claimed that Southampton are keen on a move for Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele before the end of the month, with his ball-playing expertise potentially an ideal fit.

Steele could be a great signing for Saints, not only because of his vast experience, but also due to the fact that he is renowned for being good with his feet – something that is so important under Martin, given his style of play.

The 34-year-old started Brighton's 3-0 win away to Everton on Saturday afternoon, enjoying a 90% pass completion rate at Goodison Park, and Graham Potter heaped praise on him during his time as manager of the Seagulls.

"I think his role around the club, his role in the dressing room, his role with the boys has been brilliant. I’ve got to say that he is very supportive of them, he has been really supportive of Rob. He puts his own personal ambition to one side for the team which is not so easy to do and is actually quite rare. I have the utmost respect for Jason in that regard."

This shows that the £20,000-a-week Steele is a good character in the dressing room, which can only aid Southampton's survival bid in the Premier League, and he could be more suited than McCarthy straight away.

Dom Bess meets his calling with maiden Yorkshire five-for

Sussex spun to brink of defeat after doughty fightback

Alan Gardner24-Apr-2021Sussex 221 (Haines 86, Patterson 4-26) and 136 for 6 (Bess 5-33) need another 99 runs to beat Yorkshire 150 and 305 (Ballance 74, Lyth 66, Carson 5-85) Yorkshire’s trip to the south coast proved a restorative experience for England offspinner Dom Bess, as a five-wicket haul on the third afternoon helped push the visitors towards a hard-fought victory. There remained work to do on the final morning, after a day of blustering winds and shifting fortunes, but Bess’ dismissal of George Garton with his final delivery left the Sussex chase precariously placed.Having steadily dragged their way back into this contest, turning an overnight lead of 92 into a fourth-innings target of 235, Yorkshire seemed set to complete the turnaround by reducing the home side to 86 for 5 during the evening session. Ben Brown, Sussex’s doughty captain, bolted together a stand with Garton as the shadows lengthened, only for Bess to cap his day by securing a maiden five-for in Yorkshire whites. On a dry Hove surface, and following success for Sussex’s young offspinner, Jack Carson, Bess quickly became the focus of attention – much as he was for large portions of England’s winter assignments in Sri Lanka and India. He has not had an easy start to the season, going wicketless in Yorshire’s opening two fixtures, and suffered a rib problem while fielding in the first innings of this match, though he was able to bowl through the discomfort. The ease with which David Willey and Duanne Olivier added 51 in 13.2 overs during a last-wicket stand for Yorkshire either side of lunch hinted at some of the life going out of the pitch. But there has been turn throughout, and Bess was soon into the attack after the openers got off to a solid start – much as in each of the three preceding innings of this match – with Tom Haines setting the tempo for Sussex during a 45-run stand.Having started his spell with a maiden to Aaron Thomason, Bess’ seventh delivery was replete with intent: drift into Haines from round the wicket, spin and bounce past the outside edge. Carson had found plenty of grip bowling from the Sea End, and with five left-handers in the Sussex top seven, the sense only increased that this was a golden opportunity for Bess. The breakthrough came in the same over, as Thomason’s attempt to get down the track ended with him being bowled through the gate after a desperate hoy across the line. A second for Bess followed soon after the tea interval, as Tom Clark was lured forward only for some extra bounce to see the ball pop off the splice to silly point. In between times, the lively Haines was caught down the leg side off Jordan Thompson.Dom Bess hadn’t taken a five-for for Yorkshire since leaving Somerset•Getty ImagesWith Joe Root joining the attack from the Cromwell Road End, Hove suddenly became reminiscent of England’s most-recent Test outing in Ahmedabad – albeit you would struggle to squeeze in a 130,000-seater “Modium” between the flats and terraces that flank this ground. Root might have removed Stiaan van Zyl on 21, as a thin edge evaded Adam Lyth at slip, but the Sussex No. 3 became a third victim for Bess in the following over, leaving one that went on with the arm to clip off stump.Bess was now in a groove, and Delray Rawlins was dispatched first ball, a thin edge deflecting off Jonny Tattersall behind the stumps to be taken at slip. Garton saw off the hat-trick delivery, but Bess had 4 for 12 from 13 overs and Yorkshire seemed set to roll through, only for Brown, who edged Root through the hands of Lyth on 11, to battle through to the close and keep his side in contention. Not that Yorkshire will be getting roundly clapped back to the broad acres, should they manage to make it back-to-back wins on the road. “All French people have two jobs, their own and film critic,” said the director Francois Truffaut. Substitute in the words “Yorkshire” and “cricket”, and you might have a fair reflection of how seriously things are taken in the White Rose county. There had been mithering aplenty after Yorkshire were second best to Glamorgan in their opening game of the season, and they have had to come from behind here.A factor in the final analysis might well be the relative experience of these teams. While Yorkshire could draw on the skill and knowhow of six full internationals in their XI, the Sussex side has just two men aged over 30 – van Zyl and Brown – and as many as seven who are 23 or younger. Sussex have had their chances in this game, but too many have slipped by.Related

Another example came on the third morning. Yorkshire were 254 for 9 and the target still fewer than 200, but Willey and Olivier set themselves against the prevailing wind to produce the second-highest partnership of the innings. The change in momentum was in keeping with a game that has kept all concerned guessing, shifting like the contours of the dunes at the beach.Gary Ballance’s first half-century in any form of the game since August 2019 provided a vital bulwark for Yorkshire, the No. 3 adding stands of 37 with nightwatchman Patterson and 32 with Bess. He fell when padding up ill-advisedly to Carson, bowling from around the wicket, before Ollie Robinson struck twice in as many overs to leave Sussex on the brink of batting again – Thompson smartly held one-handed by Thomason at slip, Bess given out lbw to a nip-backer.Carson had impressed with his control and character in helping to check Yorkshire’s progress on the second evening, laughing at the idea that life for a spinner during an English spring is tough. “It’s nothing to playing in Northern Ireland, as a 13-year-old in short sleeves – it’s absolutely Baltic,” was his swift rejoinder. Although the last-wicket pair kept Sussex waiting beyond a delayed lunch, it was Carson who finished the job, spinning one into Olivier’s pads to secure career-best figures and a second five-for in only his seventh first-class match.

49ers reject £20m+ bid to sell Leeds star primed to start vs Portsmouth

Leeds United and the 49ers Enterprises have rejected a big offer to sell another star player, it has emerged.

Leeds players to leave this summer

The Whites and Daniel Farke missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season, which has resulted in some of their stars departing for the top flight. Archie Gray was the first high-profile departure, joining Tottenham, and recently, Crysencio Summerville has moved to West Ham, with the club bringing in just under £80m in total this summer.

Speaking just before Summerville’s exit was officially confirmed, Farke hailed the Dutch winger and shared just how hard it will be to replace him.

"Obviously he was not just named but also in general I would say the best player in this league last season, with many goals and assists, it will never be easy to replace him, especially one on one. We have to be aware to bring a player in, in his position definitely, but as a team and a group we have to make sure we share his goals and assists.

“To bring a new player in who will be the new best player in this league will be pretty difficult, you can't have so much money as you need to spend in order to bring in a new Summerville. I've spoken about how much I like and value him and of course we'll miss him but a club never relies on just one person, not on player, one coaching staff member or even the manager, the club and the team is always bigger.

“We work to find good solutions to compensate his loss and try to be in other areas perhaps even a bit stronger. This is what we will do once this business happens but I expect this to happen."

Despite all the departures, some players who are still at Elland Road have been linked with exits. For example, Leeds rejected a bid from Brighton for Georginio Rutter earlier this summer, whereas Brenden Aaronson has had enquiries from abroad.

Wilfried Gnonto, who isn’t a stranger to being linked with a move away from Leeds, has also been attracting interest.

And now, new information has emerged regarding the forward, amid inks of a move to Everton.

Leeds rejected Everton bid for Gnonto

In fact, according to Graham Smyth of The Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds have rejected a bid from Everton for Gnonto, thought to be worth £23m. The Whites are hopeful of keeping the Italy international at the club beyond the window.

Within his story for The YEP, Smyth states that Gnonto is not understood to be pushing for a move away and that the winger is primed to start against Portsmouth this weekend as a result of Summerville’s departure.

Spurs struck gold on "incredible" ace worth more than Vanderson & Solanke

While things started a little slowly, there can be no denying that, as things stand, Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a brilliant summer.

The North Londoners have looked impressive on the pitch and intelligent off it.

Daniel Levy and Co have signed exciting prospects for the future in Archie Gray and Yang Mi-Hyeok, got rid of those they no longer need, like Emerson Royal, and dramatically improved the first team for the here and now with the massive £65m signing of Dominic Solanke.

The now-former Bournemouth ace was the joint-fourth top goalscorer in the Premier League last season, so there is real hope that he could be even more effective this season in a team with more quality around him.

While many teams would be happy with the business Spurs have done this summer, it appears as if they are set to do even more.

Monaco's Vanderson

They are now heavily linked with AS Monaco right-back Vanderson, although he'll have to really impress in North London if he wants his valuation to match one of his potential new teammates.

The latest on Vanderson to Spurs

So, according to a report from earlier this week, Spurs were already in talks with Monaco over the potential transfer of Brazilian right-back Vanderson.

The report claimed that the French side expected the North Londoners to make an offer in the region of €40m for the player, which converts to around £34m.

This news was then backed up by another story a few days later, claiming that people close to the right-back believe that the Lilywhites could soon make a 'breakthrough' in the negotiations.

Vanderson

It all sounds rather promising from Tottenham's point of view, and while the supposed transfer fee is relatively high, it could prove value for money in the long run for a full-back who's racked up 15 goals and assists in 84 appearances in Europe.

However, while the "sensational" defender, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, looks promising, he'll have to do something special in a Spurs shirt to surpass the value of the club's most exciting full-back.

Destiny Udogie's valuation in 2024

Yes, the player in question is the immensely exciting Destiny Udogie, who, according to the CIES Football Observatory, is worth up to a whopping €83m, which converts to around £71m.

This means the Italian youngster is worth £37m more than Vanderson and, more impressively, £6m more than the club's new number nine, Solanke.

This massive increase from the £15m plus bonuses that he initially cost the North Londoners back in August 2022 might sound ridiculous, but given his form for the club last season and the sky-high potential so many in the know believe him to have, it probably isn't.

For example, in 31 appearances last season, the "incredible talent", as dubbed by journalist Josh Bunting, scored two goals and provided three assists, meaning that in his first Premier League campaign, which he started as a 20-year-old, he averaged a goal involvement once every 6.2 games from left-back.

This impressive output, combined with his overall game, saw him become Tottenham's first player to be nominated for the Premier League's Young Player of the Season Award.

Ultimately, Vanderson looks like he'll be an exciting addition to help improve the team's depth at right-back, but he'll have to blow the roof off the Tottenham Hotspur stadium if he's going to see his valuation get anywhere near Udogies in the coming seasons.

Romano: Aston Villa have "moved" in recent days to sign new £25m defender

Looking to continue their trend of stealing the headlines in the transfer window, Aston Villa have "moved" to sign a defensive reinforcement worth a reported £25m in recent days.

Aston Villa transfer news

Fresh from Champions League qualification, the Villans have been flexing their new-found European muscles this summer to welcome a total of eight fresh faces, with standouts such as Ian Maatsen and Amadou Onana arriving. They've also managed to avoid any potential profit and sustainability issues courtesy of Douglas Luiz's and Moussa Diaby's departures to Juventus and Al-Ittihad respectively.

Diaby's sale, worth a reported £50m, may have injected even more money into Villa's summer spending fund too, which could see even more reinforcements arrive. Those in the Midlands have been linked to the likes of Joao Felix and even a free move for former Real Madrid star James Rodriguez, but it is a defensive reinforcement who could be next through the door.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa have now "moved" to sign Dean Huijsen in recent days. The Juventus teenager is reportedly valued at £25m by the Italian giants and has attracted interest from Bournemouth and Liverpool on top of Villa, with Huijsen set to decide on his next move "very soon".

Standing at 6ft 5in, it's no surprise that Huijsen has attracted such interest following an impressive loan spell at AS Roma last season. As Juventus look to raise funds, Villa could take full advantage by signing the 19-year-old this summer.

"Dominant" Huijsen can make immediate Villa impact

Whilst it would be easy to suggest that Huijsen is one for the future at 19 years old, his form at Roma last season proved that he's ready to compete for a place in first-team football, possibly at Aston Villa. Alongside the likes of Pau Torres and Diego Carlos, the teenager is more than capable of impressing Unai Emery enough to break into the Spaniard's side, especially given the number of games that Villa will have to manage in the coming season.

Diego Carlos in Premier League action for Aston Villa.

If the praise of Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig is anything to go by, describing the defender as "extremely dominant in the air", then £25m could quickly look like a bargain deal if Villa step up their move even further.

After making 14 appearances in Serie A last season, Huijsen may now get the chance to step into both the Premier League and Champions League at Villa Park.

Newcastle interested in "extraordinary" £55m ace who Ronaldinho is a fan of

With the summer transfer window now in full swing, Newcastle United are interested in a move for a winger who could be an exciting addition to Eddie Howe's side.

Eddie eyes attacking reinforcements

The biggest story currently doing the rounds on Tyneside surrounds the future of Anthony Gordon. The England international is attracting attention from numerous Premier League sides, with Liverpool currently looking like the most likely destination for the Merseyside-born star.

In terms of incomings, the Magpies appear to be the latest team linked with a move for Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville. Mainz winger Brajan Gruda is another name rumoured to be making a move to Tyneside, with the Magpies currently battling with Bundesliga titans Bayern Munich for the exciting talent's signature.

With a new winger clearly high on PIF's list of targets, it appears that the Magpies have set their sights on a wide-man who English fans will be well aware of.

Toon target move for Barcelona forward

As first reported by Football Insider's Wayne Veysey, Newcastle United have registered their interest in signing Barcelona’s Raphinha. The Toon are said to be in the market for a new winger this summer and view the Brazilian winger as a perfect option going into next season.

Whilst the outlet claims that the Magpies are interested in a deal for the 27-year-old, it states that a deal between Newcastle and the Catalan giants is not close at this stage. Despite this, there is a good chance that Raphinha will be shown the door, owing to the meteoric rise of 16-year-old Lamine Yamal.

Former Leeds winger Raphinha.

The Brazilian was limited to just 28 league appearances last season, only completing a full 90 minutes on a handful of occasions. Even amid his lack of consistent game time, Raphinha managed to contribute 6 goals and 9 assists over the course of the previous campaign.

Former Barcelona boss Xavi picked up on the 27-year-old's quality despite his limited minutes, branding the winger an "extraordinary player" during a press conference in February 2023.

And despite his somewhat lacklustre period with Barcelona, English fans will best remember Raphinha for his performances with Leeds United, which earned the Brazilian his £55million move to Camp Nou in the first place.

Former Leeds forward Raphinha.

Raphinha played 67 games for the Elland Road outfit, scoring 17 goals and contributing 12 assists whilst the Whites shone under the management of Marcelo Bielsa. It was his exploits in West Yorkshire that led to Barcelona and Brazil legend Ronaldinho asking his former side to sign the player, saying that he "would very much like him to come [to Barcelona], he has a lot of quality".

Whilst Ronaldinho did get his wish to see Raphinha play in Catalonia, his time in Barcelona has not gone to plan, and the Brazilian is likely to be on his way out this summer. If Newcastle are serious about signing the player, the Toon could get a great deal for the 27-year-old and bring him back to England.

Lions register first win as Markram returns to form

Josh Richards and Dominic Hendricks scored centuries for the Lions as they chased down a record total

Firdose Moonda26-Nov-2020

Results Summary The defending champions, the Lions, registered their first win of this season’s competition by chasing down a record total against the Knights at the Wanderers. Their 336 for 6 beats the previous best, 310 for 8 by Australia in the 2011/12 season, and finished off a remarkable comeback for the hosts, who were behind by 98 runs in the first innings. The Knights were kept to 300 in their first innings, thanks largely to Sisanda Magala’s 6 for 60 and held together by half-centuries from Grant Mokoena and Migael Pretorius, who then took 4 for 40 against his former franchise. The Lions never quite got their reply going and went from 47 for 5 to 202 all out. That gave the Knights a perfect platform to bat the Lions out of the match and when they stretched the lead to 283, with six wickets in hand they may have thought they were on track. But the Knights lost 6 for 44 and set the Lions 334 to win.Centuries from openers Josh Richards and Dominic Hendricks, who shared a stand of 256, took the Lions to the brink and the middle order finished off. Despite the victory, the Lions remain more than 20 points behind the Knights in Pool B.Also on the Highveld, the Warriors chased 218 to beat the Titans at SuperSport Park, to earn their first win of the competition and deny Aiden Markram victory despite his twin centuries in the match. After six Covid-19 related absences from the first two rounds, the Warriors were back to full strength for this fixture and the difference in morale and performance showed. They bowled the Titans out for 320 and then piled on 392 in their own first innings.By the time the Titans erased the 72-run deficit, three of their top four were dismissed and they had to rely on Markram and the middle order to set the Warriors a competitive target. Only one batsmen other than Markram got past 30, and the Warriors were required to chase 218. They made tricky work of it, but won by three wickets to close the gap between themselves and the Titans to less than 18 points in Pool A.The Cobras lie at the bottom of the pool and are the only team not to have won a match after the first three rounds. They held on for the draw against the Dolphins in Durban after failing to bowl the Dolphins out in either innings and being set 295 runs to win. The Dolphins declared their first innings closed on 389 for 8, built on a century from Khaya Zondo. In reply, Tony de Zorzi top-scored for the Cobras with 58 as they were dismissed for 312, 77 runs behind.Fifties from the Dolphins top three and a scoring rate of 4.34 runs to the over saw them declare again on 217 for 4 on the final day, setting up a thrilling last two sessions. They had 62 overs at the Cobras, who needed to score at close to five runs an over to win. The Dolphins might have fancied their chances when they had the Cobras 66 for 3, but Pieter Malan and Aviwe Mgijma dug in, and though both of them were eventually dismissed, the Dolphins could not nip out the last four wickets. The Dolphins are also at the bottom of their pool, Pool B, but are less than 10 points behind the Lions. On the National Radar Markram’s return to form could not have come at a better time, with the Test series against Sri Lanka a month away and decisions to be made about both the opening spot and the captaincy. He scored 149 and 121, almost 45% of the Titans total runs in the match, and sits in second place on the overall run charts. Less encouraging were the performances of Dean Elgar (20 and 6) and Theunis de Bruyn, who bagged a pair. While both Elgar and de Bruyn have centuries to their names in the tournament so far, Elgar has gone to add to half-centuries to that but de Bruyn’s three ducks and a 13 may see him slip down the order of preference. Also of interest is two-time Test cap Senuran Muthusamy’s performance for the Dolphins. He was promoted to opening the batting and scored 79 and 56 while also eight wickets in the match (four in each innings) with his left-arm spin. Muthusamy now sits in joint fifth placeon the wicket-charts and though South Africa are not short of left-arm slow bowlers, having an all-round option is always handy. Top Performers Though Markram has all but secured the Test opening spot, Sarel Erwee continues to impress and remains the leading run-scorer. Erwee registered a third score of 50-plus in his third match, with 56 in the second innings to help the Dolphins set up their victory push. No.3 batsmen Keegan Petersen also scored 56 while in the first innings Zondo’s hundred will be noted with interest, especially after his struggles for form since being on the fringes of the national side.Other batsmen who showed signs of strong form are Dominic Hendricks, who scored a second century in successive matches, Richards, whose hundred was his first at franchise level and Sinethemba Qeshile of the Warriors, who scored 97.With Tabraiz Shamsi on international duty, the Knights’ Pretorius is now the leading bowler with 16 wickets to his name. Warriors’ left-armer Marco Jansen is in joint-fourth place and took seven wickets against the Titans while exciting young quick Lifa Ntanzi, claimed 3 for 51 in the first innings for the Dolphins against the Cobras.
