West Indies coach Phil Simmons hopes to finish tenure on a high

While he was optimistic about their future in Tests, Simmons ruled out the possibility of coaching West Indies again

Phil Simmons enters his final days as West Indies coach believing he has given his all in the role and hopes the foundations are in place for a revival of their Test cricket.Simmons’ departure was announced after the team’s early exit from the 2022 T20 World Cup when they failed to make it out of the first round. That was a continuation of some dire white-ball form – which is also likely to see them have to go through the qualifying tournament for next year’s ODI World Cup – and led Cricket West Indies to initiate a review which includes Brian Lara and Mickey Arthur on the panel.Related

Simmons quits as West Indies coach after T20 World Cup exit

However, there have been some encouraging signs in their Test cricket. The 164-run defeat in Perth was their first loss in six matches this year, while there have been other notable high points in Simmons’ second stint as a coach, which began in October 2019. They include the one-wicket victory over Pakistan in Jamaica and the 2-0 away victory against Bangladesh, where they chased 395 to win the opening Test and took the second by 17 runs.”[I feel] good, from the point of view that every time I come out and every time I’m part of West Indies, I give everything I can give,” Simmons said ahead of the Adelaide Test. “I will give all for the next six days and let’s hope we can come out with a win, so I finish on a high.”We’ve lost one Test in a year, and it’s shown in the way we’ve played – especially the series against England where we had to fight for a few games then come out on top in the last – that some progress has been made. For me, the joy is seeing people improve. You’ve had Jermaine [Blackwood], who is going into his 50th Test [in Adelaide] and he was out for a while, now we see the difference in him. It’s little things like that that bring joy to me.”Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul defied Australia in the first Test•Getty Images

As he leaves the West Indies national set-up again, Simmons hoped the game in the Caribbean could make the changes required to give the players the best chance to succeed. The Test, ODI and T20 sides now look significantly different from each other with the emergence of Jayden Seales and the recent debut of Tagenarine Chanderpaul bringing cause for optimism in the Test group.”My big hope for West Indies cricket is we get things in order at home, we put things in place so that every team can start improving and moving up the ladder,” he said. “Think the Test team has shown the way so far. In the last few years, we haven’t had good success in white-ball [cricket] but the talent is always there. What we do on the ground to harness that talent is what will get us back to where we are supposed to be.”The captain [Kraigg Brathwaite] keeps setting the standard, and with Tage [Tagenarine] next to him, now think that example will be set so everyone else can follow it. It augurs well for our batting line-up, [there’s] a lot more grit and determination. [In] the last few years, the bowling has done their work, now the batting is coming. Sooner or later it will all come together.”Casting his eye a little wider, Simmons could see the possibility of Test cricket becoming a higher-tempo game, referencing England’s extraordinary approach this week in Rawalpindi, but stressed that it was important that each side played to their style.”In the next few years, the game will just keep going faster and faster,” he said. “We saw a Test in Pakistan and it’s just unbelievable; the game will keep getting like that. ODI cricket brought speed to Test cricket, and now T20 is bringing speed to both forms. We’ll see how fast it gets in the next few years. But the way you play depends on the tools you have. If we don’t have all the big shot-makers that England have right now, then we play in our way.”Simmons remains keen to stay in cricket and will be the head coach for Dubai Capitals in the inaugural ILT20 next month. But on the prospect of coming back to West Indies again, he said: “Think you can rule out that third stint. That’s enough for me. I’d like a lot more time at home.”

BCCI president Roger Binny: No need for contracts in domestic cricket at the moment

“I think domestic players…Ranji players are looked after pretty well,” he said

Shashank Kishore21-Oct-2022It’s perhaps understandable, given he has only just taken over as BCCI president, that Roger Binny was unlikely to go into the nuts and bolts of every single burning issue in Indian cricket during his first press interaction. Nonetheless, his answers in Bengaluru on Thursday gave you a peek into what the general sentiment in the BCCI regarding domestic cricket – and player contracts specifically – is.”I think domestic players … Ranji players are looked after pretty well,” Binny said in response to whether central contracts for domestic players was one his bucket list of things to accomplish while BCCI president. It was something Sourav Ganguly had touched upon as well when he took over as BCCI president in October 2018. Unlike Ganguly, Binny was clear that wasn’t going to be priority, especially since the board had introduced pay hikes for them last year.”They’re taken care of well, they have good facilities, they stay in good places. There’s no need for that at the moment. What’s needed is to lift the standard of the Ranji Trophy,” Binny said. “It’s the premier tournament. Along with Ranji, you have the Duleep Trophy and Irani Cup. How many people knew Irani Cup happened a month back? How many watched it? We have a culture; cricket fans need to support that. We need to change that.”Having just returned from his unveiling as BCCI president in Mumbai, Binny was the talk of the town at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, his “home turf”. And as he regaled his colleagues, friends and former team-mates at the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), the former India allrounder touched on another important subject – selection.”That is best left to the selectors, I won’t interfere,” he said. “We’ve picked them to do a job, we will let them do it”. He wanted to be clear that people with certain responsibilities will be allowed to carry out their duties. Like the medical staff at the NCA, who he felt needed to do better.”You can’t have a [Jasprit] Bumrah breaking down 10 days before a World Cup,” Binny said. “We need to address why and how players are breaking down so easily, not just now but over the last four-five years. It’s not that we don’t have good trainers or coaches. Whether the load is too much, whether they’re playing too many formats, something needs to be done. That is my priority…not just mine, the entire board’s.”Binny was flanked by all the KSCA office bearers and members who handed him bouquets upon arrival. He joked about how the need to be in formal attire had turned a short metro ride from his home to the stadium into a long drive. As he entered the long hall, he soaked in the applause and began his introductory speech reminiscing about his first time at KSCA as a schoolboy in the 1970s.Binny identified every team-mate of his, irrespective of which level it was at, from the gathering, before saying, “I’d never imagined to one day become BCCI president. It’s a great honour, I can’t tell you how happy my family and I are today at this new responsibility. I will do my best.”As the floor was opened for questions, he was asked about Ganguly on a couple of occasions – if there was a sense that he had underachieved as BCCI president. Binny sidestepped that. He was asked about the thorny India-Pakistan issue, the obvious background being a statement made by the BCCI secretary Jay Shah in his capacity as president of the Asian Cricket Council.Shah had said that India would not travel to Pakistan for next year’s Asia Cup. That prompted a response from the sports minister Anurag Thakur. And another from Binny as well.”That is not the BCCI’s call,” Binny said. “We need the government’s clearance to leave the country. Whether we leave the country or teams are coming into the country, we need clearance. Once we get that from the government, we go with it. We can’t make decisions on our own. We have to rely on the government, we haven’t approached them yet.”Binny also spoke of raising the standard of pitches across the country. “Pitches around the country are still too docile,” he said. “They’re unfit for fast bowlers. If our team goes to England or Australia, it takes us two weeks to a month to settle in with the movement and bounce. We should be able to acclimatise here before we go there. That’s another area we need to look into.”As he left the stage, Binny reminded his former KSCA colleagues of how he’ll continue being a regular visitor to his former office. “To you guys, I have some bad news. I’m not going away from here, I’ll keep coming back (laughs).”

Everton have 6-time title-winning manager on their radar to replace Dyche

A trophy winning machine is thought to be on Everton’s radar if they sack Sean Dyche, according to an intriguing new claim.

Dyche under huge pressure at Everton

At the beginning of the season, there was hope that the Blues would enjoy a much improved campaign under Dyche having once again staved off the threat of relegation from the Championship to the Premier League in 2023/24.

Instead, it has been another hugely uninspiring period for the Blues, who sit 16th in the table heading into 2025, playing poor football and not picking up enough positive results at the same time. Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at home to Nottingham Forest was the latest disappointing day at the office, and it means the pressure is cranking up on the manager.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

While Dyche deserves some credit for keeping the Blues in the Premier League, there is an increasing feeling that a new boss is needed – one with a better playing style who can take them into a new era at their shiny Bramley Moore Dock home from next season.

Unsurprisingly, other managers have been linked with replacing the Englishman, should The Friedkin Group feel that a change is needed in the Goodison Park dugout, with Graham Potter seen as one of the favourites to come in. He is still looking for a new job after his failed spell at Chelsea, and could like the idea of managing the Merseysiders.

Everton eyeing 6-time champion to replace Dyche

According to an exciting update from TEAMtalk, Massimiliano Allegri is seen as an option to replace Sean Dyche as Everton manager, in what would be an audacious swoop.

The legendary Italian was “sounded out by Everton in their succession planning during Moshiri’s time as owner” and he is now also on The Friedkin Group’s “radar” as well.

Juventus coach MassimilianoAllegricelebrates with the trophy after winning the Coppa Italia final

If Everton were able to entice Allegri to the club it would be a major coup, considering he has been one of Europe’s leading managers over the past decade or so. The 57-year-old enjoyed a glorious period at Juventus, winning five Serie A titles and Italian Cups apiece, and he also sealed league glory during a stint in charge of AC Milan.

Allegri departed Juve earlier in 2024 after two separate spells there – he guided them to the 2017 Champions League final, where they lost to Real Madrid – but could be keen to get into management again.

If Dan Friedkin believes he can get his man, seeing him as the leading option to succeed Dyche, he should do all he can to secure his signature.

Whether the 3-5-2-playing Allegri is willing to make a step down and manage a team struggling towards the bottom of the Premier League remains to be seen, but Everton are still a huge club and their move to their new stadium has the potential to herald an exciting time, which could appeal to the former Juve hero, assuming they stay up this season. Either way, a change is needed in 2025.

£100k-p/w Everton star eyeing exit and his reps are in talks with new club

Everton could be about to lose one of their key men in January, with the player’s representatives having reportedly opened talks with a new club.

Everton transfer news

Despite a recent upturn in form that has seen them thrash Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 and secure a well-deserved point against high-flying Chelsea, Everton’s season so far can still be considered disappointing, with Sean Dyche’s side currently hovering dangerously above the drop zone.

Talks have been held over a move to Goodison Park.

To try and keep them in the division next season, Dyche is expected to prioritise reinforcements during the January transfer window as he looks to revitalise the squad.

Among the potential targets is Fenerbahce winger Oguz Aydin, who Everton recently sent scouts to watch, as well as Botafogo forward Igor Jesus, who is viewed as a possible replacement for the outbound Beto.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah is also a target. The 21-year-old had agreed terms to move to Goodison Park in the summer, but the deal stalled. According to Foot Mercato, however, the Toffees remain keen, and Lyon are now ready to let him leave for the right offer.

Calvert-Lewin in talks with Sevilla

One man Dyche could be without for the second half of the season, however, is striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The English striker has previously been linked with a number of clubs, including Juventus and Fiorentina, but a new report from Vamos Mi Sevilla FC, per Sport Witness, claims that it is now Sevilla who are leading the race to sign him.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The publication claims that the La Liga side are in the race to sign Calvert-Lewin and are talking to his representatives. Sevilla’s sporting director Victor Orta sees Calvert-Lewin as an exciting player who can help the club turn their season around, with Garcia Pimienta’s side currently stuck in 14th place in the Spanish top flight.

Calvert-Lewin, meanwhile, intends to leave Everton “soon,” possibly as soon as January, and he would reportedly be “excited” to play in Spain if given the chance, making a switch to Sevilla one to watch.

Calvert-Lewin, who earns £100,000-per-week at Goodison Park, has been a key figure for the Toffees since they signed him from Sheffield United in 2016, hitting 70 goals in 263 games. His most fruitful season came in 2020/21 when he hit 21 goals in all competitions, though this term, he’s managed just two goals in 15 games.

The 27-year-old is out of contract at Everton next summer, meaning the club will likely need to sell him on after the New Year to avoid losing him on a free later down the line. Speaking about the striker’s future, former Everton captain Alan Stubbs told BBC Sport that he expects him to move on in January.

“That decision comes from Dominic. But for me, it looks like his head is elsewhere. We are at a crossroads for the next chapter of Dominic’s career and for Everton to move on.”

Ipswich could sign a "pure goalscorer" who’s the next Liam Delap

Ipswich Town’s first season back in the Premier League for 22 years has been a tough one so far.

Despite picking up some impressive draws against Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United and beating Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers away, Kieran McKenna’s side find themselves down in the relegation zone.

However, with more than half of the season still to play, there is every chance the Tractor Boys can drag themselves to safety, especially with the incredible Liam Delap leading the line.

The 21-year-old poacher has been one of the signings of the season, so fans should be excited by reports from last month linking the club to another youngster who could be the next Delap.

Liam Delap's season so far

Delap joined Ipswich for around £20m over the summer, and while that looks like an absolute steal today, there was no guarantee he’d be a hit.

After all, his top-flight experience from his time with Manchester City amounted to 39 minutes in the 20/21 season and eight minutes in 21/22.

Fortunately for McKenna and the Ipswich faithful, the Winchester-born poacher has been brilliant in his first full campaign of Premier League football, and while he didn’t start the season on fire, he’s now racked up an impressive tally of six goals and one assist in 16 appearances, equating to a goal involvement every 2.28 games.

Moreover, his brace against Villa and strikes against Spurs and Fulham have helped the Suffolk side pick up points.

That said, it’s not just his goalscoring that makes the “incredible” star, as dubbed by the one and only Pep Guardiola, such an essential member of the team, it’s also his ability to hold up the ball, bring others into play and generally give opposition defenders something to worry about.

So, the prospect of the club potentially getting their hands on someone who could be the next Delap should excite fans.

The young striker who could be the next Delap

So, to get straight to the point, the youngster who could be Ipswich’s next Delap is 18-year-old Celtic prospect Daniel Cummings.

The teenage phenom, whom football writer Kai Watson dubbed “a pure goalscorer,” was linked with a plethora of Premier League and EFL clubs in a report from Football Insider late last month.

According to the story, the up-and-coming forward’s contract is set to expire in the summer, meaning he’d be available for a minuscule compensation fee of around €310k, which converts to just £262k, and based on his form at the youth level, that could be an incredible bargain.

For example, this season alone has seen the 6 foot 1 marksman rack up an incredible tally of 23 goals in 22 games, while his career tally stands at 38 goals and one assist in 56 appearances for the Hoops’ various youth sides, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.43 games.

It is too early to say with any certainty just how good the young Scotsman will be, but based on his sensational record at the youth level, the signs are certainly encouraging.

If McKenna and Co were able to get ahead of the chasing pack, then, like Delap, they’d have another incredibly promising, prolific and physically imposing striker on their hands and one that could be worth a king’s ransom sometime down the line.

Ultimately, Ipswich are already lucky to have a striker like the former City gem leading the line, but what’s better than one devastating young striker? Two, of course.
