AC Milan continue to search for suitable profiles to bolster their attack ahead of the 2025-26 season, having failed to qualify for the Champions League. According to a report from , Milan have established contacts with Monaco striker Embolo, after finding out that there are a lot of complexities in an operation for Juventus star Vlahovic.

Per Fabrizio Romano, Monaco will not stand in the way of Embolo, having already made a pact with the Swiss international last summer. The player rejected advances from Turkish side Besiktas. Milan are keeping tabs on the player and have opened talks to sign him, with the Ligue 1 side setting a €15 million (£13m/$17.5m) price tag.

Vlahovic remains Milan's primary candidate to bolster the frontline. Indeed, as per , Juventus are ready to cash in on Vlahovic and get his €12 million net salary off the books. The Bianconeri have already secured the signing of Jonathan David as a free agent and are expected to get in touch with Paris Saint-Germain over extending Randal Kolo Muani's stay in Turin.

The Serbian striker finds a move to Milan appealing, which will give him a chance to not only play for a historically big name in Europe but also allow him to reunite with Massimiliano Allegri. However, the financial aspect of the operation is proving to be a major deterrent in Milan's pursuit of the ex-Fiorentina man. report that Milan will only seriously make moves for Vlahovic if the 25-year-old demands a severance package from Juve, and if the striker would be happy to accept a salary of €6 million plus bonuses tied to winning the league and if he wins the top scorer award in Serie A.

A South Africa Test squad with just seven capped players

Seven of the 14 men travelling to New Zealand are in line for debuts

January is the window that South Africa have earmarked for their flagship T20 tournament, which kicked off to much fanfare in 2023. To ensure its success – which depended on their biggest stars being available for the tournament – CSA forfeited an ODI series against Australia even though there was a chance that might affect their qualification for the 2023 World Cup. Although they tried to reschedule the upcoming Tests against New Zealand, they were once again left with a decision to make. Long story short, the first-choice picks will be playing the SA20. These newbies will head out to the other side of the world.Neil Brand, South Africa captainBrand is yet to play a Test but when he does, on February 4, he will be captaining his country. Brand is an experienced domestic cricketer, who spent some time at Cardiff MCC and has built his professional career in Centurion. He has also spent time with the Somerset and Glamorgan Second XIs. He is 94 away from 3000 first-class runs and has a batting average of 39.27, including six hundreds, and also has a track record as a leader. He has captained in 18 of his 51 first-class matches, including for a significant part of the 2021-22 season when he led Titans to the domestic first-class trophy and finished as the tenth-highest run-scorer in the competition. He also led the South African A side against West Indies A earlier this year, a series that was organised to help prepare players for the New Zealand Tests and which South Africa won 2-1. Brand scored a century in the opening game and was the fifth-highest run-scorer in the series. The top sixThree of the top six are players who have been in or around South Africa’s Test squad: Keegan Petersen, David Bedingham and Zubayr Hamza and all three have strong records. Petersen and Hamza were the leading and third-highest run-scorer in the South African A series against West Indies and all three are involved in the ongoing rubber against India.Petersen was named in the Boxing Day Test after being dropped last summer, against West Indies, and scored 2 but has four half-centuries in 12 Tests and 11 years of experience in the domestic system. Bedingham, who considered trying to play for England when he was at Durham, has returned home and debuted against India and impressed with a confident 56 while Hamza could feature in the New Year’s Test. Hamza last played Test cricket in New Zealand in 2022, and has six caps, 212 runs and a top score of 62. He is also the fourth-highest run-scorer in the ongoing domestic four-day competition and appears to have found his touch after serving a nine-month ban for a doping violation. The only other capped batter in the 14-man squad is Khaya Zondo, who has played five Tests, the most recent against Australia earlier this year. He was the fourth-highest run-scorer in the series against West Indies A.Former South African Under-19 batter Raynard van Tonder, who has a first-class average of 42.84, is likely to be capped in New Zealand along with Ruan de Swardt, who averages 45.75.Duanne Olivier is the most experienced player in the squad with 15 Tests•Getty Images

The pace attackFormer Kolpak players Duanne Olivier and Dane Paterson will lead the attack and offer pace, movement and most importantly experience. Olivier, who has played 15 Tests, was establishing himself as a regular in the South African side before he went to Yorkshire in 2019. He has 59 Test wickets, at an average of 21.93, including a best of 6 for 37 against Pakistan, three five-fors and a ten-wicket haul.Paterson, a bowler in the Vernon Philander mould of subtle seam movement, played two Tests for South Africa in 2020 before a brief stint as Kolpak and then overseas player for Nottinghamshire. He has more than 550 first-class wickets at an average of 23.63, and conditions in New Zealand are expected to suit him.The rest of the attack will be made of uncapped players, including allrounder Mihlali Mpongwana, who was named in the ODI squad for the India series but did not get a game. He earned the praise of T20I captain Aiden Markram, who said he “thinks about the game in a great way” and adapts well to conditions. He operated as a third and sometimes fourth seamer in the series against West Indies A but has only played one other first-class match this season. Alongside him is another former Under-19 player, Tshepo Moreki, a swing bowler with 93 first-class matches to his name. The spinnersOffspinner Dane Piedt played nine Tests for South Africa between 2014 and 2019 before becoming part of a wave of cricketers who left the country to join the Major League Cricket circuit. He now lives in Washington, USA, but answered an SOS from Test coach Shukri Conrad to come back to South Africa this season with a view of travelling to New Zealand. Piedt played two matches for the second-division Knights side and was the leading wicket-taker in the series against West Indies A and can expect to add to his international caps on this trip. While New Zealand may not be a place to play two spinners in a Test, Conrad has decided to do so, with the addition of 37-year-old legspinner Shaun von Berg. Von Berg has played on South Africa’s domestic scene since 2009 and has regularly been among the leading wicket-takers in the first-class competition. He is currently playing for Boland and has 15 wickets from five games in the four-day tournament. The wicketkeeperClyde Fortuin was part of South Africa’s Under-19 World Cup-winning side in 2014 but did not go on to reach the heights of his team-mates, Markram or Kagiso Rabada. Instead, he has racked up 74 first-class caps, 68 of them as wicketkeeper, and was the only wicketkeeper used in the A series against West Indies. Though his batting average overall is just 27.10, he has shown recent form and was the fifth-highest run-scorer in the last season’s first-class competition.

Alexander Isak saga adds to Newcastle's transfer woes as Saudi-backed, super-rich Magpies threaten to become the summer window's biggest losers

The striker's future is still up in the air despite Liverpool's approach being rebuffed, and Eddie Howe and Co. are struggling badly to make additions

Like a disappointing all-inclusive holiday, Newcastle's summer has not gone to plan. The Magpies' qualification for the Champions League via a fifth-placed Premier League finish was expected to preface some significant improvement to the squad in the transfer window with their Profit and Sustainability Rule (PSR) fears allayed, but so far it's been a story of rejection and "frustration".

Despite the near-limitless financial backing of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund, the PIF, multiple key targets have opted to move elsewhere, with just one major signing completed to date. And to make matters worse, there is serious speculation surrounding star striker Alexander Isak, who is evidently so unsettled that the club has been forced to take action.

Unable to land their desired players and facing the grim reality of their talisman leaving before the window closes, Newcastle's summer of discontent only looks likely to get worse…

  • Getty Images

    Missed targets

The summer has been characterised by high-profile near misses for Newcastle, who have made one major signing so far in the form of the costly £52 million ($75m) capture of Anthony Elanga from Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest. That deal aside, it has been a story of repeated rejection.

At one stage or another, the Magpies had been in the running to sign the likes of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro (both of whom joined Chelsea), Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo (both of whom joined Manchester United) AND Dean Huijsen, who has long since joined Real Madrid.

Just as it seemed Newcastle might finally be set to end their streak of snubs, the Tynesiders were brutally gazumped by Liverpool despite a big-money offer for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike, with the striker now bound for Anfield rather than St. James' Park. Primary goalkeeper target James Trafford, meanwhile, is increasingly being linked with Manchester City despite the Magpies' pursuit of the Burnley shot-stopper having been trailed well before the transfer window opened.

    Struggle to compete

The Magpies now find themselves desperately trying to push beyond their current status as 'Big Six' disruptors, going head to head with the planet's leading clubs in the transfer market for a higher calibre of player in their bid to cement themselves as top-four regulars and lay the foundations for future title tilts.

But for a second summer in a row they are having to face up to a reality where they are still struggling to compete with the established order, despite their mega riches and the additional offer of Champions League football, and financial restrictions mean this is a problem they can't simply throw money at.

Manchester United may have finished 15th last season, but the allure of one of the biggest clubs on the planet is still strong; Chelsea are, of course, based in London – a playground for the wealthy – and their return to the Champions League and unexpected Club World Cup triumph is said to have put top stars on notice that they are back on the up; Man City have Pep Guardiola in the dugout and have already completed the transition that lies ahead for Newcastle, from new-money pretenders to established serial winners; Mikel Arteta is a massive draw for Arsenal, who are closer than ever to finally ending that Premier League title drought and the appeal of being part of that is significant.

Through no fault of their own, Newcastle simply can't compete with that legacy, geographical location or the potential to be part of a genuine title challenge, and that is not something that is going to change in the short-term, even if they technically have the bank balance to absolutely dominate.

    'Really frustrating summer'

Head coach Eddie Howe has not hidden his exasperation with the situation, perhaps in an effort to trigger a reaction in the market from those above him in the Newcastle hierarchy. Speaking after the damning 4-0 pre-season friendly defeat to Celtic, he pulled no punches.

"It has been a really frustrating summer," he conceded. "We've been very close to signing several players and for different reasons – there's not one theme why we haven't signed more – we've ended up missing out on a few who would have made a difference."

The 47-year-old also hinted strongly that the club are struggling to attract the very best talent on the market: "The one most important factor in any transfer is the player has to want to come to Newcastle. We're a very proud club and are proud of what we do, so any player has to feel that. If they don't, for whatever reason, I don't think it's a healthy transfer. Every player we have signed to this point, that's gone on to be hugely successful with us, has had that desire to come."

In a rather bleak final statement, he added: "I'd say I'm hopeful rather than confident because we're not in control of the market or agents, players and other clubs. I can assure everybody we are a hundred percent on it and trying to do things quickly."

    Bad to worse

It had been thought that the one enduring upside for Newcastle in this transfer window was that, having secured a return to the Champions League and the revenues that come with that achievement, they were not under any pressure to sell to fall in line with PSR. That was supposed to make talismanic striker Isak untouchable, especially off the back of a prolific, 27-goal season and with three years to run on his contract. However, the picture has changed very quickly despite the club's insistence that the Swede is not for sale.

First, Liverpool rocked the boat significantly as it emerged the Reds were prepared to stump up in the region of £130m ($175m) to snatch Isak in what would have been a Premier League record transfer. Newcastle's Saudi owners are said to have intervened to ensure the approach was rebuffed, but that wasn't the end of the story.

Later the same day, it was reported that Saudi giants Al-Hilal – who, like Newcastle, are owned by the unfathomably wealthy Public Investment Fund (PIF) in the Gulf State – were weighing up their own mammoth offer for the 25-year-old. Perhaps tellingly, that news was not given the same short shift that Liverpool's interest was, and Howe was forced to take action – sending Isak home before the friendly against Celtic due to the intense speculation surrounding his star player.

Ekitike is reportedly enthusiastic about the opportunity to join the Premier League, and among the potential destinations, Liverpool stands out as his preferred choice. Williamson retires hurt with tight hamstring in Hamilton T20I against Pakistan

He felt it while running a single in the tenth over of the match, and Southee will captain New Zealand for the rest of the match

Abhimanyu Bose14-Jan-2024New Zealand captain Kane Williamson retired hurt after “experiencing tightness” in his right hamstring while batting in the second T20I against Pakistan in Hamilton on Sunday. As a precautionary measure, he would not return to the field.Tim Southee will captain New Zealand for the rest of the game. After the tenth over, Williamson was seen getting attended to by the physio, with him clutching his right hamstring. He was batting on 26 off 15, with three fours and a six. During the drinks interval, he then trudged off with Daryl Mitchell coming out to bat in his place. As per a New Zealand Cricket statement, Williamson experienced tightness in his hamstring while completing a run in the tenth over.

Williamson has had a spate of injuries in recent times. He ruptured his ACL in the first match of IPL 2023 and recovered just in time to play the ODI World Cup in India six months later. During the World Cup match against Bangladesh, he suffered a broken thumb forcing him to miss four more games before returning for the clash against Pakistan. He was named in New Zealand’s squad for the T20I series at home against Bangladesh last month before being withdrawn on ‘medical advice’. Williamson was to feature in four games of the five-T20I series against Pakistan, missing the third game in Dunedin.

Leach to undergo surgery for knee injury

Jack Leach is set to have surgery on his left knee to remove the remaining swelling that cut short his Test tour of India.England’s left-arm spinner sustained the injury during the first Test in Hyderabad after jarring his knee on the ground while diving near the boundary on day one. The injury was exacerbated the next morning following another blow in the field, limiting him to a handful of four-over spells. Leach was still able to get through 36 overs in the match, as the tourists triumphed by 28 runs to take a 1-0 series lead.Such was the extent of the swelling Leach could not bend his knee, and a lack of improvement subsequently ruled him out of the second Test. The Somerset man travelled with the team to Abu Dhabi for their mid-series break. It was here the management decided the best course of action was for him to return home to recover fully. He will have his operation on Tuesday.Related

  • Leach ruled out of rest of Test series in India

“I’m going to have an operation to get the rest of the swelling out because it’s not budging,” Leach told on Saturday. “It was the second ball of the first innings in the field so that whole game I was playing with this knee problem.”I obviously knocked it a few times throughout that game and it has just created a long period of recovery. I need to get the operation done and then hopefully I can get back to playing cricket. I’d love to have a run of playing cricket and getting into a bit of a rhythm again and hopefully that can happen again once I’ve got this sorted.”Leach has been Ben Stokes’ go-to spinner, taking 47 of his 126 wickets under his tenure. He has also been a vital part of the dressing room culture, having played 14 of the 22 matches since head coach Brendon McCullum took charge.Leach was due to play a pivotal role in the ongoing India series, particularly as the leader of an inexperienced spin attack made up of Tom Hartley, Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir. He presented Bashir, his Somerset team-mate, with his maiden cap ahead of the second Test in Visakhapatnam. The latest stalling of a 36-cap career joins a long list of setbacks for the 32-year-old. Leach, who suffers from Crohn’s disease, had just come back from missing the Ashes last summer due to a stress fracture of the back. He was also ruled out of Stokes’ first Test as permanent captain after sustaining a concussion in the field on day one against New Zealand in Lord’s in 2022.In the winter of 2019, he contracted a life-threatening bout of sepsis which limited him to one Test in that series, and saw him play no part in the tour of South Africa that followed at the start of 2020.England’s home summer gets underway at Lord’s on July 10 with the first of three Tests against West Indies. England will hope Leach will be back by then and match-fit, with Somerset’s County Championship season starting on April 5 away to Kent.

Tom Westley underpins Essex as Lancashire face uphill battle

Late Porter wicket cements another forceful display from table-toppers

ECB Reporters Network20-Apr-2024Tom Westley kick-started his season with an innings that helped underpin Essex’s commanding position against Lancashire in the Vitality County Championship at Chelmsford. The Essex captain chalked up 1,130 runs last season but had contributed just 56 in four innings this time around. However, his fluent 81 from 138 balls signalled a personal return to form and helped Essex construct a 231 first-innings lead against ailing Lancashire. By close of play Lancashire had lost captain Keaton Jennings while crawling to 10-1 in 10 evening overs as they battled to avoid an innings defeat. In a throwback to earlier times, there was a Cook scoring runs near the top of the Essex order, though this was the unlikely figures of Sam rather than Sir Alastair. The nightwatchman hung around for nearly two and a half hours and 126 balls for a highest first-class score that marooned him one run short of a maiden fifty.Essex had overhauled Lancashire’s first-innings total inside 36 overs for the loss of the overnight wicket of Feroze Khushi, who had laid the foundations with a half-century at a strike-rate of 160. Elgar and Cook were more circumspect, though their impact was just as demoralising for the flagging fielding side as they put on 120 in 36 overs.Cook pulled George Balderson for one consummate boundary while Elgar also pulled Balderson to the ropes and followed next ball with an angled glide to third man for another of his 10 fours.Lancashire did not help themselves when just after he had brought up the century partnership in 187 balls, Cook was dropped at third slip by George Bell on 44. He went to lunch on 49 and was back in the pavilion promptly afterwards, caught first ball at slip misdriving outside off-stump against Balderson.Elgar passed 17,000 first-class career runs during his three-and-three-quarter-hour stay, but was eventually out caught behind when wafting at Will Williams on 79, his third 50-plus score in five innings for his new county. There was no let-up with Elgar’s departure. Westley and Jordan Cox settled into a steady rhythm, Westley characteristically strong off his legs and Cox helping on its way to the boundary a Lyon ball that drifted down legside.Their partnership was worth 57 when Cox dragged Jack Blatherwick tamely to short midwicket. Matt Critchley, centurion against Kent last week, came and went quickly, Lyon finding one to turn sharply and catch the angled bat on its way into slip’s hands. The introduction of Luke Wells’s spin just before tea resulted in a flurry of scoring, his only over in the spell conceding 17 runs. Westley whipped a delivery through the covers to reach his fifty and then Michael Pepper twice lofted over long-on for a combined total of 10 runs.Pepper treated Bailey and the new ball with similar distain, hooking a six to fine leg and then driving through midwicket along the ground. But he played down the wrong line to Williams in the next over and was caught in the slips for 30 from 31 balls.Noah Thain played attractively on his first-class debut for 24 from 50 balls before being undone by one that kept low from Balderson and disturbed his middle and off stumps. Four overs later, Westley was also the victim of another low delivery from Lyon that beat his mistimed swish and hit his protruding front pad.The innings was wrapped up in the space of eight balls when Wells trapped both Shane Snater and Simon Harmer.Lancashire’s reply faltered when Jennings, a century-maker against Hampshire last week, went for his second single-figure score in the match, lbw misjudging a delivery from Jamie Porter. Nightwatchman Williams might have gone first ball but Harmer put down a routine chance at second slip.
