Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam set up Pakistan's second ODI series win in South Africa

Pakistan have become the second team after Australia to win two bilateral ODI series in South Africa after successfully defending 321 in the decider in the third ODI at SuperSport Park. They earned 20 points in the World Cup Super League and move to the top of the table, level with England and Australia. In a match that tested both teams’ depth with 11 changes across the two teams – South Africa made seven and Pakistan four – one player’s touch remained exactly the same. Fakhar Zaman scored his second successive hundred, and on the way, became the first Pakistan batsman to score more than one ODI century in South Africa and score the most runs by a batsman in a three-match series against South Africa to set up the victory.Between him and Babar Azam, who notched up 94, they asked their hosts to pull off the highest successful chase at this ground, as Kyle Verreynne and Andile Phehlukwayo almost pulled off a coup. Their 99-ball 108-run sixth-wicket partnership steadied South Africa from 141 for 5 and put them 73 runs away from a win. But in the end, the tail was left with too much to do after most of the rest of the top six were undone by spin, with Mohammad Nawaz and Usman Qadir taking four wickets between them. While South Africa will once again have cause to examine their approach against the turning ball, they also missed their frontline attack, all of whom have departed for the IPL. With Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Lungi Ngidi absent, Daryn Dupvaillon, Lutho Sipamla and Beuran Hendricks bowled 18 overs for 118 runs without taking a single wicket. Instead, it was Keshav Maharaj, brought in for Tabraiz Shamsi, who enjoyed the most success, supported by allrounder Jon-Jon Smuts and part-time offspinner Aiden Markram. In total, South Africa bowled 28 overs of spin – the most in a home ODI – and they collectively picked up six wickets. In a left-field move, Markram opened both the bowling and the batting, which made him only the second South African after Robin Peterson to start in both disciplines in the last two decades. He will be happier with his performance with the ball than the bat though, after he took 2 for 48 in ten overs but was out for 18, inside-edging onto his pad before being caught behind.Markram and South Africa began well with the ball and Pakistan only got one boundary away in the first six overs, but that was the calm before the storm. When Zaman hit the first six of the innings – off a Sipamla short ball that he muscled over midwicket – the openers seemed to find rhythm. Imam-ul-Haq, meanwhile, took on Dupavillon’s short ball with his trademark pull and brought up his half-century off 60 balls.Their century stand came up in the 19th over and made the first Pakistan opening pair to record five century stands in ODIs, but were separated just as an acceleration appeared on the cards. Imam went down the track to try and hit Maharaj over long-on but did not time his stroke and was caught by Verreynne.Enter Azam, who signalled his intent with a gorgeous back-foot drive through point off the eighth ball he faced. Zaman continued as the anchor, cashing in where line and length allowed such as in a Sipamla over, where the young quick sprayed it on both sides of the wicket and Zaman plucked three boundaries. His hundred came with a short-arm jab to midwicket and with more than 15 overs left, he had enough time to finish what he had started in the second ODI at the Wanderers, where he was run-out for 193 but Maharaj prevented that.Kyle Verreynne shared 108 with Andile Phehlukwayo for the sixth wicket•AFP via Getty Images

He had Zaman given out lbw when the batsman missed a slog sweep and was hit on the back pad but Zaman reviewed. Ball tracking showed it was missing leg. Off the next ball, Zaman tried to paddle Maharaj away but got an inside edge on to his pads to instead give Heinrich Klaasen a simple catch. That dismissal sparked a mini-collapse that saw Pakistan lose 5 for 51 in 64 balls. Maharaj, Smuts and Markram were responsible for the squeeze and could have kept Pakistan to under 300 before Azam and Hasan Ali came together for a final flourish. They took 56 runs off the last three overs, with Azam finishing one shot away from a century. With South Africa needing to score at close to 6.50 runs an over from the get-go, they needed a good start. Markram and Janneman Malan, both powerful hitters, laid the groundwork with boundaries on both sides of the field including Markram’s classic cover drive and Malan’s front-foot pull off Shaheen Afridi. Their partnership was worth 54 when Markram was dismissed in the ninth over. With Jon-Jon Smuts, a new – and as yet untested – batsman at the crease, Azam waited for the powerplay to end before introducing Qadir. Smuts showed some aggression with a strong sweep through square leg but never looked entirely comfortable as Qadir bowled him with a flipper.Soon there was spin from both ends, with Nawaz into the attack but captain Temba Bavuma and Malan negotiated them fairly well. Bavuma relied on his sweep and Malan waited for width, bringing up fifty with a cover drive off 63 balls. The pair still maintained a degree of caution, especially with Bavuma battling a hamstring niggle.Their partnership grew to fifty before Nawaz removed them both in his fourth over to expose South Africa’s middle order. He had Malan trapped lbw when he played down the wrong line to a delivery that straightened and three balls later bowled Bavuma, who played all around a straight one. Four overs after that, Nawaz got Klaasen, who missed an attempted mow and was hit on the back pad. He reviewed the lbw but ball tracking showed the ball would have hit the stumps. At the end of the 28th over, South Africa were 141 for 5, without the injured Rassie van der Dussen or the IPL-bound David Miller, leaving it to Verreynne and Phehlukwayo to score at above eight runs an over. Verreynne’s first boundary came off Faheem Ashraf – a top-edge over the wicketkeeper – before he unleashed the pull and the back-foot punch. Phehlukwayo took on spin and hit Nawaz over cover and Qadir over deep square leg for six, with both hitting anything wide from Rauf.Verreynne brought up fifty in the 40th over – off 40 balls – while Phehlukwayo reached the milestone in the 42nd off 56 balls. South Africa then needed 76 runs off the last ten overs but had to contend with Rauf’s changes of pace. He snuck in slower balls at opportune moments and got Verreynne to drag on to deep-square leg, attempting to clear the rope.Six balls later, Phehlukwayo went in similar fashion when he swung at a Hasan slower ball and skied it. Sarfaraz made good distance, and called for and claimed the catch to end South Africa’s hopes of winning a third trophy in nine series under Mark Boucher. Pakistan, though, have now won series in South Africa with Misbah-ul-Haq as captain (2013) and coach (2021).

Contact made: Sunderland braced for big money offer for "amazing" 22 y/o

With the transfer window now in full swing, it looks like a Premier League club is prepared to spend big in order to tempt a Sunderland star away from the Stadium of Light this summer.

Sunderland enjoy steady summer so far

After last season saw Sunderland finish 16th in the Championship table, much of the Black Cats' faithful felt that their side needed a serious rebuild during the transfer window. The early passages of the summer have seen Sunderland start their business by bringing in a couple of experienced players.

Sunderland looking to sign “poacher” who could shine with Clarke

The first to arrive on Wearside was goalkeeper Simon Moore who joined the Black Cats on a free transfer from fellow second tier outfit Coventry City. The 34-year-old has penned a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light with an option for a further twelve months.

The arrival of Moore was quickly followed by that of Alan Browne who in a similar fashion joined on a free transfer from Preston North End. Rounding off the Black Cats’ recent spree of free transfers is Ian Poveda, who arrives in Wearside after his current deal expired at Leeds United.

Whilst the news of incomings will be a cause for excitement among the Sunderland faithful, the Wearside outfit could see some high-profile exits this summer. Both Jack Clarke and Jobe Bellingham have caught the eye of Premier League clubs in recent weeks with the duo's future at the club currently hanging in the balance.

With top flight clubs not shy of shopping at the Stadium of Light, it appears that one of the Premier League new-boys are preapred to spend big to sign a Black Cat this summer.

Leicester eye deal to sign Ekwah

As reported by Sport Witness, a recent report in the African media has claimed that Leicester City are in the picture to sign Sunderland’s Pierre Ekwah this summer. The outlet states that the Foxes' scouts have contacted Ekwah's camp to find out more information about the 22-year-old ahead of a potential bid.

Despite there being no mention of the exact fee that Leicester are willing to pay, the report claims that Sunderland could make a lot of money from the sale. Based on this information, it would be safe to assume that the Foxes are willing to spend big to get the deal done this summer.

Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah.

Ekwah first arrived on Wearside in a move from West Ham United back in January 2023. During his time at the Stadium of Light, the Frenchman, who also has Ghanaian citizenship, has made 60 appearances for the Black Cats, finding the back of the net on five occasions.

Speaking on the midfielder's talents, former Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray waxed lyrical about the player telling the press: "That part of his game is really coming along, and I keep telling him that if he can develop that physical aspect of his game then what a footballer we've got because he can do amazing things with his feet.

"He's so clever with his feet, you can see how fast his feet are, and he can see pictures."

Whilst Sunderland will no doubt eager to keep Ekwah at the club this summer, the Foxes may be able to force their hand with an offer that is simply too good to turn down.

Williamson, the highest ranked Test batsman, was also named the International Test Player of the Year and awarded the Redpath Cup for first-class batting, after he amassed 639 runs in just four innings at an average of 159.”Going into the Test summer – there was that Championship final carrot and there was a real drive there for the guys,” Williamson told Richard Hadlee on a phone call, upon receiving the news of the award. “Although it seemed a long way off, winning four Tests before you’ve started one is a pretty lofty goal. To spend some time at the crease personally and make contributions towards that … certainly proud as a leader and a player in this side that we were able to achieve some of those things and we’re looking forward to that final.”In the women’s category, Kerr won the Super Smash and the International T20 awards. The legspinning allrounder played a key role in the White Ferns’ wins over Australia in Brisbane last December and in Napier last month. Dom Bess meets his calling with maiden Yorkshire five-for

Sussex spun to brink of defeat after doughty fightback

Alan Gardner24-Apr-2021Sussex 221 (Haines 86, Patterson 4-26) and 136 for 6 (Bess 5-33) need another 99 runs to beat Yorkshire 150 and 305 (Ballance 74, Lyth 66, Carson 5-85) Yorkshire’s trip to the south coast proved a restorative experience for England offspinner Dom Bess, as a five-wicket haul on the third afternoon helped push the visitors towards a hard-fought victory. There remained work to do on the final morning, after a day of blustering winds and shifting fortunes, but Bess’ dismissal of George Garton with his final delivery left the Sussex chase precariously placed.Having steadily dragged their way back into this contest, turning an overnight lead of 92 into a fourth-innings target of 235, Yorkshire seemed set to complete the turnaround by reducing the home side to 86 for 5 during the evening session. Ben Brown, Sussex’s doughty captain, bolted together a stand with Garton as the shadows lengthened, only for Bess to cap his day by securing a maiden five-for in Yorkshire whites. On a dry Hove surface, and following success for Sussex’s young offspinner, Jack Carson, Bess quickly became the focus of attention – much as he was for large portions of England’s winter assignments in Sri Lanka and India. He has not had an easy start to the season, going wicketless in Yorshire’s opening two fixtures, and suffered a rib problem while fielding in the first innings of this match, though he was able to bowl through the discomfort. The ease with which David Willey and Duanne Olivier added 51 in 13.2 overs during a last-wicket stand for Yorkshire either side of lunch hinted at some of the life going out of the pitch. But there has been turn throughout, and Bess was soon into the attack after the openers got off to a solid start – much as in each of the three preceding innings of this match – with Tom Haines setting the tempo for Sussex during a 45-run stand.Having started his spell with a maiden to Aaron Thomason, Bess’ seventh delivery was replete with intent: drift into Haines from round the wicket, spin and bounce past the outside edge. Carson had found plenty of grip bowling from the Sea End, and with five left-handers in the Sussex top seven, the sense only increased that this was a golden opportunity for Bess. The breakthrough came in the same over, as Thomason’s attempt to get down the track ended with him being bowled through the gate after a desperate hoy across the line. A second for Bess followed soon after the tea interval, as Tom Clark was lured forward only for some extra bounce to see the ball pop off the splice to silly point. In between times, the lively Haines was caught down the leg side off Jordan Thompson.Dom Bess hadn’t taken a five-for for Yorkshire since leaving Somerset•Getty ImagesWith Joe Root joining the attack from the Cromwell Road End, Hove suddenly became reminiscent of England’s most-recent Test outing in Ahmedabad – albeit you would struggle to squeeze in a 130,000-seater “Modium” between the flats and terraces that flank this ground. Root might have removed Stiaan van Zyl on 21, as a thin edge evaded Adam Lyth at slip, but the Sussex No. 3 became a third victim for Bess in the following over, leaving one that went on with the arm to clip off stump.Bess was now in a groove, and Delray Rawlins was dispatched first ball, a thin edge deflecting off Jonny Tattersall behind the stumps to be taken at slip. Garton saw off the hat-trick delivery, but Bess had 4 for 12 from 13 overs and Yorkshire seemed set to roll through, only for Brown, who edged Root through the hands of Lyth on 11, to battle through to the close and keep his side in contention. Not that Yorkshire will be getting roundly clapped back to the broad acres, should they manage to make it back-to-back wins on the road. “All French people have two jobs, their own and film critic,” said the director Francois Truffaut. Substitute in the words “Yorkshire” and “cricket”, and you might have a fair reflection of how seriously things are taken in the White Rose county. There had been mithering aplenty after Yorkshire were second best to Glamorgan in their opening game of the season, and they have had to come from behind here.A factor in the final analysis might well be the relative experience of these teams. While Yorkshire could draw on the skill and knowhow of six full internationals in their XI, the Sussex side has just two men aged over 30 – van Zyl and Brown – and as many as seven who are 23 or younger. Sussex have had their chances in this game, but too many have slipped by.Related

Another example came on the third morning. Yorkshire were 254 for 9 and the target still fewer than 200, but Willey and Olivier set themselves against the prevailing wind to produce the second-highest partnership of the innings. The change in momentum was in keeping with a game that has kept all concerned guessing, shifting like the contours of the dunes at the beach.Gary Ballance’s first half-century in any form of the game since August 2019 provided a vital bulwark for Yorkshire, the No. 3 adding stands of 37 with nightwatchman Patterson and 32 with Bess. He fell when padding up ill-advisedly to Carson, bowling from around the wicket, before Ollie Robinson struck twice in as many overs to leave Sussex on the brink of batting again – Thompson smartly held one-handed by Thomason at slip, Bess given out lbw to a nip-backer.Carson had impressed with his control and character in helping to check Yorkshire’s progress on the second evening, laughing at the idea that life for a spinner during an English spring is tough. “It’s nothing to playing in Northern Ireland, as a 13-year-old in short sleeves – it’s absolutely Baltic,” was his swift rejoinder. Although the last-wicket pair kept Sussex waiting beyond a delayed lunch, it was Carson who finished the job, spinning one into Olivier’s pads to secure career-best figures and a second five-for in only his seventh first-class match.

Surprise move: Man Utd target "extraordinary" UCL winner who’s like De Ligt

The Premier League is finally back, and after a lacklustre campaign last year, Manchester United got off to a perfect start this season with a 1-0 home win over Fulham.

Erik ten Hag's side weren't perfect, but they looked good, and there are undoubtedly positive signs on and off the pitch at the moment, which should leave fans feeling excited about the next ten months.

Moreover, the transfer window is still open for another week and, based on recent reports, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co are making moves to bring in even more talent before it closes.

Erik ten Hag

One of the stars touted for a move to Old Trafford has won the Champions League within the last four seasons and has even won comparisons to Matthijs de Ligt.

Manchester United transfer news

According to a recent report from Spanish publication Sport, United are one of several clubs interested in Barcelona star Andreas Christensen.

Andreas Christensen

Alongside the Red Devils, the report claims that Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are also keen on the Danish international, although the Magpies are supposedly struggling with financial issues, per the story.

The report claims that while Barça manager Hansi Flick wants to keep the talented defender in Spain this summer, an offer in the region of €25m, which converts to about £21m, would tempt the club into selling him.

Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessie, and Sergio Busquets of Barcelona.

It wouldn't be a cheap deal, but given Christensen's quality and experience, it might be one worth pursuing, especially as he's been compared to De Ligt.

How Christensen compares to De Ligt

Okay, so the first thing to address is this comparison to De Ligt and where it comes from, for that matter.

Barcelona's Andreas Christensen celebrating.

It primarily stems from FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, over the last 365 days, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for everyone, and from there, they have concluded that the Dutchman is the number one most similar centre-back to the Dane.

To get a better understanding of how they came to this conclusion, you can look at the various underlying numbers in which the pair rank very closely, including non-penalty expected goals plus assists, expected assists, progressive carries, passing accuracy, passes into the penalty area, tackles won, successful take-ons, ball recoveries and aerial duels won, all per 90.

However, it's not just his statistical similarity to the Red Devils' impressive new centre-back that would make the Barça ace an appealing signing; he'd also bring a lot of experience and know-how to a team that is going to see more youngsters involved as the INEOS revolution continues.

Despite still being just 28 years old, the "extraordinary" defender, as dubbed by former manager Xavi, has an incredible amount of experience. He's made 93 appearances in the Premier League, 62 in the Bundesliga, 54 in La Liga, 44 in the Champions League and 20 in the Europa League.

His trophy cabinet is also seriously impressive; he's won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup with Barcelona, the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Europa League, and Club World Cup with Chelsea.

Ultimately, while Christensen might not be the most exciting name on the market, he won't cost an arm and a leg, has won comparisons to De Ligt and has bags of experience to boot. Therefore, United should look to bring him to Old Trafford this summer, as he'd surely help shore up their defence, even if only for a couple of years.

Man Utd won the lottery with "genius" star worth 12x more than Eriksen

The incredible talent is one of the club’s best signings in years.

After IPL postponement, UAE becomes contender for T20 World Cup

Will the postponement of the IPL have an impact on the 2021 men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled in India later this year?It is clearly too early to say as the fallout from the postponement of the IPL is yet to settle, after the number of cases inside the bubble began to rise over the last few days. But ESPNcricinfo understands that while the ICC continues to monitor the situation in India, the UAE, which has been slotted in as a back-up venue, is now becoming a more realistic contender to host the global tournament. As it stands, the T20 World Cup, comprising 16 countries, is scheduled to be played in India between late October with the final on November 14.The BCCI recently shortlisted nine venues in India, which were proposed to the ICC, the host for global tournaments. An ICC team of experts from the biosafety, events and security wings was scheduled to visit India from April 26 to do an inspection of the venues but was forced to shelve that plan due to the travel ban imposed by the UAE to and from India.Related

This week India crossed the 20-million mark for positive Covid-19 infections, and has been brought to a standstill by a raging second wave. The numbers were significantly high even in March, when the BCCI announced the IPL schedule comprising of six venues.Unlike in the past where all eight teams played on a home and away basis, this season the BCCI decided the IPL would be played on a caravan model, with two venues in operation at a time and the tournament itself split into four legs. The BCCI was utilizing the IPL as a dry run for the T20 World Cup.However, concerns among overseas players and teams as well as their countries are bound to rise in the wake of the IPL bubble being breached. Several countries had banned travelers, including their own citizens, if they were traveling from India, in addition to imposing stiff quarantine norms.Such measures left the overseas contingent in the IPL uneasy. Two players each from Royals Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals immediately left the IPL bubble to return home and left many more anxious. The ICC is keen to avoid such a scenario. On March 5, two days before the IPL announced its schedule, Manu Sawhney, the then ICC CEO, had pointed out that the risks associated with organising a 16-team World Cup were “exponentially larger” compared to T20 franchise leagues like the IPL or bilateral cricket. On Tuesday, a senior BCCI official said the T20 World Cup was “too far away” to make a call about whether it will have to move. The status of the pandemic in the country will be the key factor, but the question is how long can the ICC now wait? Normally, the ICC finalises venues at least a year in advance. The other key question for the ICC to determine is whether it can allow crowds into the tournament. The BCCI has said that even if the tournament is moved to the UAE, it will want to run the event, which would mean in case the crowds are allowed, the ticketing revenues will go to the Indian board. From May 1, the Indian government opened vaccination for all adults over 18 years of age. However, currently, India is facing a vaccine shortage with reports stating several states will not be able to procure enough vaccines until June or July. The BCCI did consider vaccinating players at the IPL but were wary of the optics of such a move. While the next formal meeting of the ICC Board is not until its annual conference in July, it is likely the global body will ask members to meet before that to get a sense of how they are feeling and discuss options.

Spurs "phenomenon" fans have barely seen will be in the squad vs Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur fans can expect to see one of their newest stars fit and firing – potentially even starting – when they welcome rivals Arsenal to N17 next Sunday.

Tottenham vs Arsenal – team news

Ange Postecoglou and Spurs fans will be watching the dreaded international break from behind the sofa in the hope all their stars return free of injury, with a host of Lilywhites jetting off around the globe just three weeks into the new season.

All eyes will of course be firmly on the north London derby when domestic action returns, in what is no doubt the biggest fixture of the weekend and Premier League season thus far, with Ange looking to bounce back from his frustration at the wasted chances in the defeat at Newcastle before the break.

"It's another sore one unfortunately, where we haven't got the rewards for our play. But it's three strong performances from our first three games. The results don't reflect that," the Aussie said on the 2-1 defeat on Tyneside.

"The positives are that our football is good and has been in the past three games. We just need to get our rewards. If we continue to play like that, I know we will get them."

And he'll hope to capitalise on an injury-hit Arsenal squad to get those rewards, with the Gunners set to be missing Declan Rice through suspension and several players through injury. New signing Mikel Merino faces weeks on the sidelines with shoulder damage, while the likes of Gabriel Jesus and Takehiro Tomiyasu are also likely to miss out.

Arsenal dealt injury blow with potential fourth star set to miss Tottenham

The Gunners could be without a quartet of senior players for their trip across north London.

On the Spurs side, the boss can boast a mostly full bill of health outside of Richarlison, and Alasdair Gold has revealed in his latest fan Q&A that there is a big boost on the way as well.

Van de Ven and Solanke set to return from injury

After both Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke missed the clash with Newcastle due to injury, Gold expects both to be fit to take part against the Gunners, with Solanke's return to action a particularly big boost given the wastefulness on display at St James' Park.

"We can only go on Ange Postecoglou's words and he said Dominic Solanke will be ready to face Arsenal. He said last Friday that he was close for Newcastle but they wanted to 'err on the side of caution' and had previously dispelled any suggestion he would miss the North London Derby," Gold told Football.London.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke

"It sounded the same with Micky van de Ven as he said he was 'close in training this week but with the international break he's not quite 100%'. With a further two weeks of recovery and work under their belts you would imagine both will be in a position to face Arsenal, but we'll get the final word on Postecoglou on Friday."

Spurs fans have barely got to see their new goalscorer in action since his £65m move from Bournemouth in the summer, but he looked sharp in his debut at Leicester, firing three shots at goal, completing three dribbles and creating one chance.

If the Lilywhites are going to punish an Arsenal side who haven't quite got off to the rip-roaring start many in the media predicted this summer, then having Solanke – labelled a "phenomenon" by none other than Ian Wright – leading the line and taking some of the goalscoring burden off Son Heung-min will be a massive help.
