Saudi move for £150,000-a-week Chelsea ace closer as transfer talks opened

An exit for one high-earning Chelsea player is now getting closer after talks with a club abroad, as co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley continue their work to re-shape Enzo Maresca's squad.

Chelsea enjoy busy summer transfer window with weeks remaining

There are many weeks to go until summer deadline day on August 30, but the Blues have already confirmed six new arrivals with as many going in the opposite direction.

The £325,000-per-week ace has been linked with a Stamford Bridge exit.

Centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo, striker Marc Guiu, starlet Omari Kellyman, midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Brazilian starlet Estevao Willian and 20-year-old Renato Veiga have cost chairman Todd Boehly around £93 million in total, while departures for Thiago Silva, Hakim Ziyech, Lewis Hall, Omari Hutchinson, Michael Golding and Ian Maatsen work wonders to balance the books.

Chelsea's sales have brought in around £89 million, meaning that the west Londoners are steering on the right side of PSR for this financial year with a net spend of just £4 million.

This could allow Maresca's side to invest even more into the Chelsea squad over these next few weeks. It is believed Maresca himself has made clear he wants a new striker to compete with Nicolas Jackson, and Chelsea are also still targeting a new winger after missing out on Michael Olise.

More exits are expected as well, with there being a fair few high-profile names who Boehly is eager to sell. Striker Romelu Lukaku has serious interest from both AC Milan and Napoli, according to recent rumours out of Italy, while goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is eyeing a move away as well.

Romelu Lukaku

The shot-stopper spent last season on loan at Real Madrid, and it is believed that Kepa is very keen to make a return to the Bernabeu on a permanent deal. However, much could depend on Andriy Lunin's future in that respect, as Carlo Ancelotti will have no need for another keeper if the Ukraine international decides to extend his contract – which is set to expire next year as things stand.

Arrizabalaga exit edging closer after Al-Ittihad open talks

The £150,000-per-week ace does have other options to Real, like the Saudi Pro League, where Al-Ittihad are plotting to reunite Kepa with N'Golo Kante.

The Athletic have an update on this, and the reliable news source claims a permanent Chelsea exit for Kepa is edging closer as talks continue with Al-Ittihad. The Saudi side recently had an initial bid turned down for his services, but it appears they haven't given up the chase just yet.

Real Madrid's loan goalkeeperKepa Arrizabalaga.

The 29-year-old became world football's most expensive ever goalkeeper when he joined Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao for around £72 million in 2018, but hasn't quite managed to justify his price tag since then despite the odd impressive showing.

"His strength is to save penalties, he’s shown it a few times now: in the Carabao Cup twice, against Villarreal, and even in training, it’s hard to beat him," said former Chelsea assistant Arno Michels on Arrizabalaga in 2022.

"In penalty shootouts, he has the ability to read the mind of what the player is going to do. We are very happy with Kepa and he deserves this trust because he is a fantastic guy."

Lions register first win as Markram returns to form

Josh Richards and Dominic Hendricks scored centuries for the Lions as they chased down a record total

Results Summary The defending champions, the Lions, registered their first win of this season’s competition by chasing down a record total against the Knights at the Wanderers. Their 336 for 6 beats the previous best, 310 for 8 by Australia in the 2011/12 season, and finished off a remarkable comeback for the hosts, who were behind by 98 runs in the first innings. The Knights were kept to 300 in their first innings, thanks largely to Sisanda Magala’s 6 for 60 and held together by half-centuries from Grant Mokoena and Migael Pretorius, who then took 4 for 40 against his former franchise. The Lions never quite got their reply going and went from 47 for 5 to 202 all out. That gave the Knights a perfect platform to bat the Lions out of the match and when they stretched the lead to 283, with six wickets in hand they may have thought they were on track. But the Knights lost 6 for 44 and set the Lions 334 to win.Centuries from openers Josh Richards and Dominic Hendricks, who shared a stand of 256, took the Lions to the brink and the middle order finished off. Despite the victory, the Lions remain more than 20 points behind the Knights in Pool B.Also on the Highveld, the Warriors chased 218 to beat the Titans at SuperSport Park, to earn their first win of the competition and deny Aiden Markram victory despite his twin centuries in the match. After six Covid-19 related absences from the first two rounds, the Warriors were back to full strength for this fixture and the difference in morale and performance showed. They bowled the Titans out for 320 and then piled on 392 in their own first innings.By the time the Titans erased the 72-run deficit, three of their top four were dismissed and they had to rely on Markram and the middle order to set the Warriors a competitive target. Only one batsmen other than Markram got past 30, and the Warriors were required to chase 218. They made tricky work of it, but won by three wickets to close the gap between themselves and the Titans to less than 18 points in Pool A.The Cobras lie at the bottom of the pool and are the only team not to have won a match after the first three rounds. They held on for the draw against the Dolphins in Durban after failing to bowl the Dolphins out in either innings and being set 295 runs to win. The Dolphins declared their first innings closed on 389 for 8, built on a century from Khaya Zondo. In reply, Tony de Zorzi top-scored for the Cobras with 58 as they were dismissed for 312, 77 runs behind.Fifties from the Dolphins top three and a scoring rate of 4.34 runs to the over saw them declare again on 217 for 4 on the final day, setting up a thrilling last two sessions. They had 62 overs at the Cobras, who needed to score at close to five runs an over to win. The Dolphins might have fancied their chances when they had the Cobras 66 for 3, but Pieter Malan and Aviwe Mgijma dug in, and though both of them were eventually dismissed, the Dolphins could not nip out the last four wickets. The Dolphins are also at the bottom of their pool, Pool B, but are less than 10 points behind the Lions. On the National Radar Markram’s return to form could not have come at a better time, with the Test series against Sri Lanka a month away and decisions to be made about both the opening spot and the captaincy. He scored 149 and 121, almost 45% of the Titans total runs in the match, and sits in second place on the overall run charts. Less encouraging were the performances of Dean Elgar (20 and 6) and Theunis de Bruyn, who bagged a pair. While both Elgar and de Bruyn have centuries to their names in the tournament so far, Elgar has gone to add to half-centuries to that but de Bruyn’s three ducks and a 13 may see him slip down the order of preference. Also of interest is two-time Test cap Senuran Muthusamy’s performance for the Dolphins. He was promoted to opening the batting and scored 79 and 56 while also eight wickets in the match (four in each innings) with his left-arm spin. Muthusamy now sits in joint fifth placeon the wicket-charts and though South Africa are not short of left-arm slow bowlers, having an all-round option is always handy. Top Performers Though Markram has all but secured the Test opening spot, Sarel Erwee continues to impress and remains the leading run-scorer. Erwee registered a third score of 50-plus in his third match, with 56 in the second innings to help the Dolphins set up their victory push. No.3 batsmen Keegan Petersen also scored 56 while in the first innings Zondo’s hundred will be noted with interest, especially after his struggles for form since being on the fringes of the national side.Other batsmen who showed signs of strong form are Dominic Hendricks, who scored a second century in successive matches, Richards, whose hundred was his first at franchise level and Sinethemba Qeshile of the Warriors, who scored 97.With Tabraiz Shamsi on international duty, the Knights’ Pretorius is now the leading bowler with 16 wickets to his name. Warriors’ left-armer Marco Jansen is in joint-fourth place and took seven wickets against the Titans while exciting young quick Lifa Ntanzi, claimed 3 for 51 in the first innings for the Dolphins against the Cobras.

Chris Wood receives suspended two-month ban for historic gambling offences

Hampshire left-arm seamer hopes to be an example to other gambling addicts

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Dec-2020Chris Wood, the Hampshire left-arm seamer, hopes that other gambling addicts will use his example to reach out for support, after being handed a two-month suspended ban following an investigation by the ECB’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) into his betting activities.Wood, who was this week handed a one-year extension to his white-ball contract at the Ageas Bowl, admitted back in April that he had been suffering from an 11-year gambling addiction, and was praised at the time by the PCA for being the first active cricketer to speak out about such a problem.Nevertheless, in the course of his addiction, Wood was found to be in breach of the ECB’s Anti-Corruption Code, and pleaded guilty to charges relating to a total of nine bets placed on cricket matches in 2011 (two bets) and 2016 (seven bets). However, by admitting responsibility for his actions and fully cooperating with the investigation, Wood enabled the ECB to take several mitigating factors into account in reaching an agreed sanction, which was then ratified by the Cricket Discipline Commission, chaired by Tim O’Gorman.”At the time of the offences Wood was suffering from a gambling disorder,” said an ECB statement. “He has since sought help and has spoken publicly about the issues he has faced and is providing advice and assistance to others experiencing problems with or addiction to gambling, both inside and outside of sport.””I want to apologise for the mistakes I made in 2011 and 2016, it is something I deeply regret,” Wood said in a joint statement with the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA). “While I played no part in any of the games that I placed bets on, I totally understand the rules that I am not permitted to bet on cricket, under any circumstance.”The code of conduct is very clear and the education provided from the PCA and ECB does a great job in protecting the integrity of the game.”My gambling addiction had complete control over my life to the extent I would do something I never thought I would in placing a bet on a game of cricket. I had no regard to the consequences of my actions. I want to add I had no direct involvement in any game or did I try and influence the outcome of any match.”Ian Thomas, the PCA Director of Development and Welfare, added: “The integrity of professional cricket is vital for everyone within the game and today’s outcome shows how seriously this is taken. Any breach of the anti-corruption code needs to be investigated with appropriate sanctions for perpetrators and the PCA has been involved in the process.”The PCA has been continually working with Chris on his gambling addiction and while Chris and the PCA are extremely disappointed in these indiscretions, we hope this can provide a reminder that professional cricketers are forbidden to bet on any aspect of cricket, for any amount of money.”The PCA and ECB take anti-corruption very seriously and every single player has to complete mandatory training in this area before they are registered to play professional cricket in England and Wales.”We do not want today’s news to stop players coming forward and reaching out for support. All PCA members receive no judgment from any issue they face and like Chris, will receive individual guidance to heal them. The charge relates to historical bets when Chris’ gambling disease was at its height and we are thankful for the ECB understanding the mitigating factors in his individual situation.”Wood’s two-month period of ineligibility is suspended for two years, and will be triggered should he be found to have relapsed in that timeframe. However, he insists that he has learned from his mistakes, and will be helping others to do the same.”Over the past two years through the support of the PCA, Professional Cricketers’ Trust and Sporting Chance I have turned my life around and I have not gambled for over two years,” he said. “I revealed this disease I am battling earlier this year with the aim to help others, not just in cricket but in any sport or walk of life and I hope my journey can help others reach out for support.”I recently started working with EPIC Risk Management which is the next stage of my recovery to provide a real life example to young people on the dangers of gambling and I hope this is something that will make a difference so people do not face the same challenges I have done earlier in my life.”

Update: Man Utd also make bid for £25k-p/w Dutch midfielder after Zirkzee

A big development has emerged regarding Manchester United's pursuit of a "complete" player alongside fellow target Joshua Zirkzee this summer, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Man United closing in on Zirkzee signing

As things stand, it looks highly likely that Zirkzee will be the Red Devils' first signing of the summer transfer window, with the Dutchman expected to arrive from Bologna in the near future. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS have been working hard on getting a deal over the line, with a deal agreed for the 23-year-old, who is expected to arrive on a long-term deal.

Assuming the move is completed this summer, Zirkzee has the potential to be a hugely exciting signing for United, considering he has impressed in a Bologna shirt, scoring 14 goals and registering nine assists in 58 appearances for the Serie A.

Joshua Zirkzee for the Netherlands

The hope is that those numbers only increase at Old Trafford, once he is playing alongside superior players, from Bruno Fernandes to Rasmus Hojlund, and former Bayern Munich teammate David Alaba has said of him in the past: "Joshua has integrated well into the team from day one. He picks things up quickly and he always wants to learn. It is very nice that he is being rewarded. He is a boy with a lot of potential. He has a talent that not everyone has."

Now, it looks as though United have decided who they potentially want to come in alongside Zirkzee this summer, with a significant development emerging regarding another Dutch target.

Man Utd make offer for "complete" player

According to Gazzetta dello Sport [via Man Utd News], Manchester United have tabled a huge offer for PSG midfielder Xavi Simons, having been linked with a double deal for Simons to pair with Zirkzee in recent days.

The Red Devils have now "stepped up" their efforts to acquire the £25,000-a-week Dutchman's signature in the "last few hours", although the money that has been offered isn't mentioned.

Simons could be a fantastic signing for United ahead of next season and beyond, with the 21-year-old's ability outlined by his stunning opening strike in the Netherlands' eventual 2-1 defeat to England in the semi-finals of Euro 2024.

The attacking midfielder has showcased his talent on a regular basis on loan at RB Leipzig, too, registering 19 goal contributions (eight goals and 11 assists) in 33 Bundesliga appearances last season, and teammate Dani Olmo has called him a "complete" footballer who "has an amazing dribbling technique, finishing as well".

Still only 21 years of age, there is so much more to come from Simons in the coming years, and he could add so much in attacking midfield areas at United, as well as being able to shine out wide, too. Signing him as well as Zirkzee feels like a no-brainer, and it is encouraging to see this fresh bid tabled.

WHAT HIS AGENT SAID

England blame 'unacceptable' Newlands facilities after claims of Covid-19 protocols breach

The use of a previously off-limits nets facility at Newlands has emerged as a possible source of the Covid-19 infection within the England camp, as the ECB hit back at claims from officials at Western Province that its players had breached the teams’ biosecure environment for a practice session on the eve of Friday’s scheduled first ODI.In an email sent on Thursday, December 3, and seen by ESPNcricinfo, WP informed CSA, ECB and the Claremont Police, who are in charge of maintaining the teams’ bio-bubble, that they could not be held liable for the safety or health of the England team, who opted to practice in a nets facility adjoining a construction site at the Kelvin Grove End of the ground.”Please be advised that the England cricket team has not adhered to the arrangements as agreed by all in the ESSPC [Event Security and Safety Planning Committee] meetings,” the email read. “The practice nets next to the construction site is not allowed to be used on practice days. Three cages of nets was set up on the square on the field. This serves to inform you that the England Cricket Team has accessed and used the nets today (3 December 2020) at their own risk. WPCA and the ESSPC will not be held liable or responsible for the safety and health of the England Cricket Team.”In response, an ECB spokesman told ESPNcricinfo that the session had arisen due to the “unacceptable” standard of the three practice pitches provided on the square at Newlands, and that CSA had accepted England’s request to put up a security cordon to facilitate the use of the nets as per similar arrangements during the T20I series on November 28.”On arrival at Newlands on 3 December, we advised the venue that the three nets provided on the main pitch were not of a standard for conducive practice, as per the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the respective boards,” an ECB statement said. “Batsmen were unable to face seam bowlers on the nets on the main pitch as the surfaces were rendered and unacceptable.ALSO READ: Explainer – Will the series still go ahead after Covid outbreak?“We requested with CSA that we would like to use the practice nets and that we would create a security cordon to ensure the players and coaches could enter the facility safely, as done previously on 28 November. This was confirmed by England’s Security Team, the Team Operations Manager and the Team Doctor. We were satisfied with this outcome and we were able to practice in the net facility safely.”The team also used the main outfield for fielding drills, a seam bowlers bowl through pitch and a number of nets were used for range-hitting against spin bowlers and coaches throws.”As far as the England touring party are concerned, the safety and health of our players and coaches was not compromised.”The nets at Newlands are currently out of bounds due to the construction of an office block at the Kelvin Grove End of the ground. The building site is attended to by several workers throughout the day. When South African players, including Andile Phehlukwayo and David Miller, who missed the T20 series, and some support staff attempted to have a net after Friday’s postponed first ODI, they were sent back and instructed to return to their hotel rooms. At the time, a third South African player had just tested positive for the coronavirus, causing the first ODI to be pushed back. On Saturday, two members of the Vineyard Hotel staff, who do not work in the same area and have not left the premises since November 16, also tested positive, prompting the entire England touring party to be retested. England returned two “unconfirmed” positive results, but have sought to get the tests analysed by doctors in London. The two England cases meant Sunday’s ODI in Paarl was abandoned. The fate of the rest of the series, which has now been reduced to two ODIs, hinges on the analysis of England’s results. Should positive cases be confirmed, those infected and their close contacts will have to quarantine in South Africa for 10 days before leaving for the UK, which could impact on Big Bash and Christmas plans. If the results of the tests are negative, the series could be completed with back-to-back ODIs on Tuesday and Wednesday.

£11m Leeds player now also close to leaving Elland Road after Kamara

Another Leeds United player is on course to leave Elland Road after Glen Kamara, with a "verbal agreement" now close.

Kamara leaves Leeds for Rennes

So far this summer for the 49ers Enterprises and Daniel Farke, the outgoings have significantly outweighed the incomings, with Joe Rodon, Joe Rothwell and Alex Cairns the only senior arrivals for the Whites.

Kamara became the latest player to leave the Whites, moving to France to sign for Rennes after just one year in Yorkshire.

Speaking after his move became official, Kamara explained why he chose to sign for Rennes. “I had very good first contacts with the managers. I came here because the club has ambition. I know that it was built in particular thanks to the training of great players, it is a talent factory. I hope my experience will help to have the best possible season. There are plenty of assets here to succeed.”

Imagine him & Rothwell: Leeds preparing swoop to sign £40k-p/w star

The Whites are reportedly keen on a deal to sign the Premier League midfielder.

ByDan Emery Jul 16, 2024

Kamara has joined Archie Gray in leaving Leeds, with the teenager moving to Tottenham in a £40m transfer. Elsewhere, fringe players Marc Roca, Charlie Cresswell, Diego Llorente, Robin Koch, Kristoffer Klaesson, Jamie Shackleton and Luke Ayling have all left on permanent transfers, whereas Sam Greenwood, Darko Gyabi and Sonny Perkins have departed on loan.

Now, it looks as if yet another permanent exit is on the cards after Kamara.

Rasmus Kristensen close to joining Frankfurt from Leeds

According to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg, Leeds right-back Rasmus Kristensen is wanted by Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt. The two clubs are in direct talks over a transfer which could be a permanent or a loan with either an option or obligation to buy and a "verbal agreement is close".

Kristensen cost Leeds £11m back in 2022, with the Denmark international arriving from RB Salzburg. The 27-year-old was a regular under Jesse Marsch and made 30 appearances for the club during the relegation campaign.

He was one of a number of Whites players who had a relegation release clause inserted into his contract, allowing him to join AS Roma on loan.

Leeds defender Rasmus Kristensen.

In Italy, he played alongside former Leeds defender Llorente and made 31 appearances in all competitions, but it looks as if a reunion at Frankfurt with another former Whites centre-back, Koch, is now on the cards.

It’ll leave Leeds and Farke with no senior right-back on the books, showing how signings in that area of the pitch are desperately needed. Sheffield United’s Jayden Bogle has been linked with filling the right-back void at Elland Road, although bids in the region of £4m have been turned down so far.

Contact made: Man Utd chase £28k-p/w ace who can leave his club this summer

Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign another striker this summer as they look to identify backup for Rasmus Hojlund.

United in need of firepower

Erik ten Hag's side are in desperate need of additions in attack this summer after scoring the fewest goals across the Premier League top seven last time out. Their 57 goals were just one fewer than 16th placed Brentford, while it was almost 30 fewer than Newcastle United, who finished in the spot above them.

Just two players reached double figures in the top flight, while their sixth-highest goalscorer was Kobbie Mainoo, who managed just 3.

That need has since been made even clearer by the departure of Anthony Martial, who is out of contract this summer and will be leaving as a free agent. It means that beyond the talented but erratic Hojlund, they are without a recognised striker at Old Trafford.

They were dealt a blow in their bid to strengthen when Benjamin Sesko penned a new deal at RB Leipzig, but now appear to be exploring alternatives. One option is Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee, who has a 40m euro release clause in his contract with Bologna and has been on the radar of AC Milan in recent weeks, though a deal appears to have stalled at San Siro.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

United have "asked for information" about the Dutchman and could yet move, but appear to be looking for other options too. Now, they may have found one.

United want Lille man

That comes as The i Newspaper report that Manchester United have made contact with the representatives of Lille striker Jonathan David over a potential move to Old Trafford this summer.

The Canadian has been on the radar of plenty of Europe's top clubs in recent season, having scored 84 goals in 183 games for Lille, including 19 in the most recent Ligue 1 campaign.

Man Utd have a "superstar" who could be their answer to Arda Guler

And that has interested United, with the report claiming that he is "high on their striker shortlist", with the 24-year-old available for just £25m ahead of the new season. However, they may have to act fast, with West Ham, Aston Villa and Tottenham all also reportedly keen on the talented forward.

David is down to the final year of his £28,000 a week deal in Lille, and as a result is free to leave this summer, their club president confirmed: "Leny Yoro and Jonathan David can leave the club this summer. Both have the ‘exit voucher’ due to their contract situation.”

United are also one of the sides keen on Yoro, though they face stiff competition from both Real Madrid and Liverpool, with the former hoping to sign him as a free agent in 12 months' time. But it could be Yoro's teammate that ultimately ends up at Old Trafford this summer if the Red Devils get their way.
