Update: “World-class” Man Utd star suffers new injury before Liverpool

A "world-class" Manchester United player could now miss his side's crucial Premier League meeting this weekend through a knock, as the Red Devils' injury woes go from bad to worse.

Man Utd injury news

The Red Devils have a chance to dent their biggest rivals' title hopes on Sunday afternoon, having already knocked them out of the FA Cup last month. Thursday's 4-3 defeat at Chelsea saw them capitulate in stoppage time, however, so confidence is fairly low heading into the game against the Reds.

Not only that, but United's injury problems show no sign of easing, with both Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans forced off at Stamford Bridge, joining the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia and Anthony Martial on the sidelines.

For all of Erik ten Hag's struggles this season, injuries can be used as an excuse for his team falling well short of expectations, with so many key figures unavailable at different points in the campaign, especially in defence.

With Sunday's visit of Liverpool looming, it now looks as though the Red Devils could have yet another influential figure in the treatment room, acting as a big concern.

"World-class" Man Utd star could miss Liverpool

Taking to X, injury expert Ben Dinnery claimed that Casemiro is a doubt for Liverpool's clash with Manchester United, picking up a new knock this week:

"Victor Lindelof and Lisandro Martinez will be sidelined for at least a month, but Ten Hag said it was too early to know the extent of the injuries suffered by Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans after they were forced off at Stamford Bridge. Willy Kambwala and Harry Maguire could be paired centrally. Casemiro will also be checked after picking up a knock."

Casemiro may be an ageing figure these days, not necessarily proving to be the physical force he was at Real Madrid, but not having him on the pitch to face Liverpool would be a significant blow.

The 32-year-old has so much experience down the years, playing in endless El Clasicos, and that nous is needed is what could be a high-octane and pressurised fixture this weekend.

Brendan Rodgers' comments on the Brazilian sum up his class: "Casemiro is a world-class player. He’s calm, he has quality. Thankfully for us, he’s suspended. He’s given them a stabilising effect. Erik (ten Hag) and his team, they’ve given them good organisation."

The hope is that he manages to shake off his knock and be passed fit for the Liverpool game, but if not, a midfield of Kobbie Mainoo, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes looks most likely, which arguably lacks a proper holding midfielder but does at least possess plenty of energy.

Man Utd can supercharge Dalot with move for £35m-rated Varane replacement

The Man United target could transform the way Ten Hag’s side play.

ByTom Lever Apr 6, 2024

Not only will Casemiro's defensive work be missed, but he also has a penchant for chipping in with important goals, netting 12 times in 74 appearances for United. It would be just like him to deliver, given his big-game pedigree.

Wrexham have opened the 2024-25 season without their talismanic No.10, with Jacob Mendy another of those currently stuck on the sidelines. They were able to claim a 3-2 victory over Wycombe in the club’s first outing at League One level in 20 years.

    WHAT PARKINSON SAID

More shrewd recruitment, funded by Hollywood co-owners, means that Phil Parkinson boasts plenty of strength in depth. He has said of nursing walking wounded back towards full fitness, with no new knocks picked up in a 4-2 Carabao Cup first round defeat to Sheffield United: “Everyone got through the game well. Mulls is continuing his progress. He didn't travel with us to Sheffield but was working really hard back in Wrexham so that is good. Jacob is getting ever closer to being available for selection so we have got a good squad to choose from and we will think long and hard about the team for Sunday.”

Fernandes was one of the star performers for his club last season as they won the FA Cup. The Portugal international appeared in 48 matches across all competitions where scored 15 times and contributed with 13 assists including an assist in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

Liverpool could save millions with their "staggering" teenage Thiago heir

Liverpool languished last season but have been reborn after broad changes were made to the struggling midfield last summer. It was a new chapter, supporters knew that, but few foresaw Jurgen Klopp's decision to not be a part of it.

The revered manager has handed in his notice and will step down from his position at the end of the campaign, and having already won the Carabao Cup in February, he is targetting further triumph in the Premier League and Europa League both.

Klopp isn't the only person to be draping the curtain on their Anfield career this year, with stalwart Joel Matip likely to depart at the end of the contract in several months.

Liverpool defender Joel Matip.

The 32-year-old Cameroonian has been a rock in defence since joining from Schalke on a free transfer back in 2016 (he was Klopp's first permanent signing), but bleakly he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in December and is not expected to feature again before the end of the term.

Thiago Alcantara is also out of contract in June; the distinguished Spaniard arrived on Merseyside as one of Europe's most impressive midfielders, and while he has exhibited his sparkling quality since signing from Bayern Munich in a £25m transfer back in 2020, injury woes have restricted him severely.

Thiago Alcantara's performances for Liverpool

Thiago was once described as "the most gifted player I've seen in the Premier League" by talkSPORT host Tony Cascarino, and there really is no disputing that his range of passing, control and intelligence is on par with any midfield orchestrator across Europe.

Glittering stays with Bayern Munich and Barcelona have seen major honours such as two Champions League titles, seven Bundesliga championships and four La Liga trophies placed in his personal cabinet spoke of his pedigree, and, in fairness, he's added the FA Cup and Carabao Cup since completing a transfer to Liverpool.

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

But as he nears the culmination of his fourth campaign on English shores, Thiago has never completed more than 20 starting appearances in a single Premier League season, playing just five minutes of action this term, against Arsenal in February, before aggravating the injury that had shackled him in the darkness for so long.

They say that the best ability is availability and given Thiago's age, torrid track record on the fitness front and sizeable salary, opting against renewing his current terms is something of a no-brainer.

While last summer's sweeping changes have alleviated the worry of trying to replace the Spain international, with Alexis Mac Allister namely fit for purpose in a similar type of deep playmaking role, Liverpool appear keen to find a fresh star regardless.

Indeed, recent reports suggest Liverpool are interested in working on a deal for Atalanta midfield Teun Koopmeiners, with the Dutchman valued at £52m by his Serie A outfit after revealing that he wishes to leave this year.

Is this worth it? Koopmeiners is an impressive and multi-functional player but he's probably not what Liverpool need, especially when the likes of Stefan Bajcetic are ready to take the step up and assume Thiago's place in the first team.

Why Stefan Bajcetic could replace Thiago

Spaniard Bajcetic joined Liverpool from Celta Vigo as a 16-year-old for just £224,000 back in December 2020, and after several years honing his craft within Liverpool's development ranks, he was handed his professional debut off the bench during Liverpool's 9-0 dismantling over Bournemouth in 2022.

Liverpool midfielder Stefan Bajcetic.

His veteran countryman might be more polished and elegant in his distribution but Bajcetic has the trappings of a top player and has already proved himself worthy of a place in Liverpool's squad after shining among rusty senior peers last term, leading to one writer remarking: "Staggering that Liverpool look most in control this season when 18-year-old Stefan Bajcetic is playing."

Last year, Bajcetic competed in 11 Premier League games in total before an abductor injury ended his campaign in March, bagging off the bench against Aston Villa after the mid-season pause for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, notably succeeding with 64% of his attempted dribbles as he sought to progress the play and inject some youthful avidity to a withered team.

This season, the teenager did feature twice in the early phase of the campaign and was praised for his "brilliant" effort in a makeshift right-back role against LASK in the Europa League by reporter Neil Jones, but niggling problems have precluded him from enjoying the true breakthrough campaign he will envisage.

Thiago may well have never quite fitted Klopp's system perfectly but his world-class attributes shone through regardless, though given that his ship has clearly sailed it presents Bajcetic with the perfect opportunity to cement himself during the months to come.

It's been frustrating for all involved that the 19-year-old has been limited to just two appearances in almost a year after such an incredible start to life on the major stage, but Bajcetic has developed physically in that time and now looks ready to tackle the rigours of top-flight football henceforth.

Rangy, lean and adroit, Bajcetic is the complete package and has the energy and enthusiasm in his play to assume Thiago's position in the squad and make a lasting impression.

Given the buzz that trailed his efforts last season, thrown in at the deep end, it's hardly surprising that such a furore is being stirred up as Bajcetic awaits his return. And Liverpool awaits him too.

Mushfiqur Rahim passed fit from hamstring injury

Mushfiqur Rahim has been passed fit by the BCB’s chief physician Dr Debashis Chowdhury, following a hamstring injury. He will be available for the domestic Bangladesh Cricket League match that begins on February 7, as he had opted out of touring Pakistan.Chowdhury also said that Imrul Kayes has recovered from his calf injury. Both Kayes and Rahim undertook fitness tests on Tuesday.”Mushfiqur Rahim and Imrul have been struggling with hamstring and calf muscle. They were undergoing rehab programmes,” Chowdhury said. “Mushfiqur had a grade-one injury, so we had hoped that he would recover by the second week of February. We had anticipated that Imrul would be needing one more week. Today they both passed the tests conducted by our physio and trainer. They are both fit to play.”Rahim’s recovery means that he is also available for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in late February. If he is to play that match, Bangladesh will have to make room for him in the squad that was announced earlier in the week for the Rawalpindi Test, which begins on February 7. Head coach Russell Domingo had indicated earlier that whoever takes Rahim’s place may have to make room for the more experienced campaigner when he’s back.”I am under the impression that this is the squad for this one Test match [against Pakistan]. We will re-evaluate once we get back [from Pakistan],” Domingo had said. “You have to remember that Mushfiq got runs in the last Test, but we also need to consider the fact that it is hard to pick a batting line-up, change it for one Test, and then change it again for the third Test. I want to give guys a run, but we also need to consider that Mushfiq was our best player in India.”There however remains some confusion over Rahim’s selection for the Zimbabwe Test, as chief selector Minhajul Abedin had reportedly said on Sunday, the day after the Rawalpindi Test squad was announced, that Rahim has to prove himself in domestic cricket to get picked.”Mushfiq has an injury. He has to become fit, and then do well in domestic cricket to be considered,” he told the newspaper.Meanwhile Shadman Islam, the left-hand opener, will probably need surgery on his wrist. He may be sent to Australia later this month for the same.”We were struggling to manage the injuries of Shadman and Mrittunjoy [Chowdhury], who had returned from the Under-19 World Cup with a shoulder injury. The board has decided to send them both to Australia for better treatment,” Debashis Chowdhury said. “We are hopeful to send both to hand and shoulder surgeons later this month.”

DRS process under scrutiny after UltraEdge malfunction hands Rassie van der Dussen reprieve

Umpiring confusion leads to bizarre passage of play in third ODI between South Africa and England

Rassie van der Dussen was allowed to review an on-field lbw decision in Sunday’s ODI between South Africa and England in Johannesburg despite Temba Bavuma previously using his side’s only referral, because UltraEdge had been unavailable when Bavuma did so.Bavuma was given out lbw when he failed to pick an Adil Rashid googly and was struck on the front pad, but decided to review umpire Shaun George’s decision. Ball-tracking technology showed that the ball would have hit the top of middle-and-leg, but as Bavuma was about to leave the field, reserve umpire Allahudien Paleker told him to wait from the boundary edge.Aleem Dar, the third umpire, wanted to check that Bavuma had not hit the ball, and despite replays seeming to show clear daylight between bat and ball, an error in the technology meant that UltraEdge was unavailable. That meant the umpire’s on-field decision was upheld, but Bavuma was not adjudged to have used South Africa’s review. The following ball, Rashid again bowled a googly, and struck the new batsman van der Dussen on the pad. Umpire George again raised the finger, and van der Dussen started to walk off. But, immediately before he left the field, Paleker informed him from the boundary edge that he was able to review the decision if he so wished. Van der Dussen did review, and ball-tracking showed that the ball was missing the leg stump, causing George’s on-field decision to be overturned.Adil Rashid was bemused after Rassie van der Dussen was allowed to use a review•Getty Images

England were irate, with their captain Eoin Morgan seemingly protesting as to why van der Dussen was able to review the decision, though it ultimately mattered little, as the batsman was bowled by Moeen Ali in the following over.According to Article 3.6.8 of the ICC’s ODI playing conditions, “a player review categorised as ‘unsuccessful’ may be reinstated by the ICC match referee at his/her sole discretion (if appropriate after consultation with the ICC technical official and/or the television broadcast director) if the player review could not properly be concluded due to a failure of the technology.”The article goes on to state that “any such decision shall be final and shall be taken as soon as possible, being communicated to both teams once all the relevant facts have been ascertained by the ICC match referee. A player review categorised as ‘unsuccessful’ shall not be reinstated if, despite any technical failures, the correct decision could still have been made using the other available technology.”That part of the clause appears to suggest that protocol was not followed in this case, with the decision to reinstate the review not communicated to the players before Rashid’s ball to van der Dussen.

West Brom blundered signing £15m flop who’s now worth less than Maja

West Bromwich Albion will still believe it's their season to clinch promotion to the Premier League, regardless of recent poor form seeing their solid grip on a Championship playoff spot become weaker.

The Baggies have only won one of their last six games in the division, with that 2-0 victory coming in fortunate fashion against Rotherham United with one of the goals a dubious penalty call.

However, Carlos Corberan's men won't let their spot in the top six slip completely and will want to return to the top flight for the first time since dropping out of the elite league at the end of the 2020-21 season.

Memories of playing against the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal regularly are soured somewhat by the numerous transfer blunders the Baggies fell victim to, this £15m buy in particular back in 2017 going down as one of the club's worst misfires.

Oliver Burke's transfer to West Brom

The world was expected of Oliver Burke when he entered the Hawthorns six years ago, joining for a bumper £15m fee after impressing at Nottingham Forest earlier in his career.

RB Leipzig would end up being the winners in this deal, however, offloading their lacklustre attacker for mega money who never really got going in his new German location after waving goodbye to the City Ground.

Burke would manage to only score one goal and pick two assists from 26 forgettable appearances at Leipzig, already a fall from grace for the winger expected to be a star after exiting Forest.

Leipzig didn't just go after Burke wildly in the hopes he would suddenly become a key performer overnight however, with the Scottish attacker bagging six goals for Forest from 31 games to catch the eye of higher-up suitors.

Yet, much like his time out in the Bundesliga, Burke would flop even on his return to English soil with the Baggies to make that £15m splashed out by the West Midlands club look like a colossal waste of money.

Oliver Burke's time at West Brom

The ex-Forest man would struggle in a West Brom strip throughout his three-season stay at the Hawthorns, amassing just 24 appearances over that time span with a meagre five of those managed over his last two campaigns.

Burke would be as goal-shy as he was out in Germany in the Midlands, only finding the back of the net once in action for the Baggies against Luton Town in the EFL Cup during his up-and-down debut season.

His pay packet whilst with West Brom would also have troubled the club's finances further, with Burke costing the Baggies £1.3m in wage costs alone during his disastrous stint on top of the transfer fee fee originally forked out.

Only given two minutes to shine in his first game off the bench, Burke would never bed himself into the West Brom first team effectively and would later be shipped out on loan to various different clubs as a result.

His time away at Celtic on loan would even see Burke criticised numerous times, branded a "disgrace" by former Hoops great Frank McAvennie after the Baggies dud put in an anonymous display in one Old Firm Derby.

There must have been a collective sigh in West Brom quarters when Burke was officially off the club roster for good in 2020 when Sheffield United snapped him up, with Callum Robinson joining the Hawthorns ranks in a swap deal as part of the transfer.

Burke has since struggled to make a name for himself for a whole host of clubs after departing West Brom on bad terms, the now 27-year-old lining up for Gary Rowett's Birmingham City in a relegation dogfight at the bottom of the second tier on loan from Werder Bremen.

His once extortionate £15m valuation has taken a significant dent as a result, with the nomadic winger now worth less than Josh Maja in the current Baggies camp even with the striker having an injury-disrupted season.

Oliver Burke's transfer value in 2024

Burke's value now comes in at a paltry £1.6m according to Football Transfers, with the one-time Forest starlet struggling at yet another new employer in the Blues.

Surprisingly picked to start Birmingham's last match against Rotherham United, which led to a social media storm about his inclusion, Burke would last just 45 minutes against the Millers before being hauled off.

Looking at his numbers from the 0-0 draw at the New York Stadium above, it's not a great shock to see why Rowett substituted Burke for the second half in South Yorkshire.

His continued woes on the pitch with whoever he lines up for have contributed in his transfer value falling off a cliff, with Maja worth just a bit more than Burke at £1.7m despite not playing a game in 2024 of yet.

Maja will hope he can fire in plenty of goals next season for Corberan's men when he's shrugged off his recurring injury problems, giving Brandon Thomas-Asante fierce competition up top in the process.

The ex-Sunderland striker had only fired in one Championship strike from the 11 games he managed before a season-ending injury in late December, but he can't be written off just yet.

Burke's future back at Bremen looks very much up in the air on the other hand, with the Bundesliga side not exactly head over heels for the 27-year-old anymore based on his torrid spell at St Andrew's to then give him another chance.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

If West Brom do end up returning to the top flight through the drama of the playoffs, they will have to be cautious about overspending so as not to have another expensive mistake on their hands.

It’s time for Clement to unleash Rangers’ £23k-p/w star alongside Silva

Glasgow Rangers play a match at Ibrox for the first time in 16 days as they welcome Hibernian as the visitors in what is a mammoth Premiership clash.

A win for the Gers will see them leapfrog Celtic at the summit of the table, thus piling on the pressure on their Old Firm rivals, who don’t play until Sunday.

Since the 1-0 defeat to Benfica more than two weeks ago, Philippe Clement will have been aiming to get some of his injured players back to full health, yet some are still unavailable…

Rangers team news vs Hibs

Ahead of the league clash, Clement spoke to the media on Friday afternoon as he discussed the state of his squad ahead of the coming matches.

“Sterling, Dowell, Sima and McCausland are back in training,” said the Belgian manager.

“Ridvan, Jack, Cortes & Danilo are out. Ridvan is not long-term, but we will see next week.”

Some good news mixed with a few blows, but the positives look like they are far outweighing any negatives, especially as it shouldn’t be long before the injured players make a return.

Cause for concern could be on the left flank, however, as Sima and Cortes are both still missing. Fabio Silva has done well depositing there, but Clement may move him into a more advanced role in place of Cyriel Dessers against Hibs.

Rangers winger Abdallah Sima.

This could see Rabbi Matondo awarded a start in what could be an ideal opportunity for him to stake a claim in the starting XI.

Rabbi Matondo’s season in numbers for Rangers

The £23k-per-week winger looked as though he was ready to depart Ibrox last summer after a poor debut season, yet he impressed in pre-season ahead of the current campaign.

He finally scored his first goal for the Gers during the 2-2 draw against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League qualifiers, being hailed as a “bright spark” in the process by journalist Euan Robertson.

While a few injuries have disrupted his progress since then, the 23-year-old has added another three goals to his tally, along with grabbing four assists, showcasing his talents in spells.

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

Clement could throw him into the mix today and the Welshman could form a dangerous duo with Silva.

In the Premiership this season, Matondo has created four big chances, averaged 0.7 key passes per game and succeeded with 1.3 dribbles per game, clearly indicating that the youngster is able to power past opponents on a regular basis while creating chances for his teammates to convert.

With four goals in his first 14 appearances for the Light Blues, Silva, meanwhile, certainly appears to be enjoying himself in Glasgow while thriving under pressure.

Having Matondo on the left wing supplying him with chances galore could mean the Portuguese striker adds to his goal tally against the Easter Road side.

It will be the first time the duo link up from the first whistle should they be unleashed in the starting XI and Clement will be hoping the pair can cause the Hibs' defence plenty of problems.
