Phillip Hughes is going back to England to state his Ashes case after recovering from a dislocated shoulder. Hughes, the New South Wales opener, has started full-scale training but his time with the local side will be short after he agreed to finish the county season with Hampshire.”I am fully fit and just need time in the middle and this is the best course of action for me now,” Hughes said in Sydney. Hughes, 21, required surgery on his left shoulder after a damaging boxing session in May and the injury ruled him out of the Test tour to England to face Pakistan. He would have been the spare batsman in that squad, but the spot went to Usman Khawaja.Hughes has given up boxing training – for now. “I love it, maybe I will continue it again one day,” he said. “But just not yet.”In his seven-match Test career Hughes has experienced extreme peaks and troughs, including twin centuries in his second game and being dropped after two matches of the 2009 Ashes. He has added a couple of appearances since then as a replacement for Simon Katich and Shane Watson, and blazed to an unbeaten 86 off 75 balls in his last innings.”I want to dominate this season and dominate more than I did last season and the year before,” he said. “I want to make a statement in all three forms of the game. I don’t just want to average 40 or 50, I want to reach the 70-80 mark and if I can do that then everything else is out of my hands.”He could be part of the Ashes series if Watson is shuffled down the order, but that depends on whether the selectors remain faithful to the out-of-sorts Marcus North. Australia’s next Test engagement is in India in October and Hughes should be involved in the squad.Last year Hughes had a short stint with English county Middlesex to fine-tune ahead of the Ashes. The move was criticised by England supporters – especially when he scored 574 runs in five first-class innings – but the experience did not help him during the opening two Ashes Tests.

Conte offers Spurs gem new contract

Tottenham Hotspur have offered academy prospect Tobi Omole a new contract after he was named in Antonio Conte’s squad for the Premier League…

What’s the word?

That’s according to allnigeriasoccer.com, who claim that the 22-year-old defender isn’t eligible to qualify as a U21 or youth player anymore but the Italian head coach has included him as a senior member of the team.

Omole is yet to make his senior bow for Spurs but did feature on the bench for their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace earlier in the season and has trained numerous times with the first team since Conte’s arrival in November.

The former Arsenal graduate has also been offered fresh terms ahead of next season, too.

Cesar Azpilicueta 2.0

Omole is capable of playing in pretty much any role across the backline, making him a very intriguing option for the Italian head coach and one that could earn some comparisons to one member of his title-winning squad at Chelsea, Cesar Azpilicueta.

Conte has very much tried to introduce a similar formation to one that once sealed the Premier League trophy, a 3-4-3, which saw the Spanish veteran partner a ball-player in David Luiz and an aggressive tackler in Gary Cahill.

Well, in Eric Dier and Cristian Romero, he has players to fit the mould of the latter duo. And for now, it’s Ben Davies taking up the other role. However, with plans to hand Omole a new deal, Conte may well see a future star fit to take the reins eventually.

As per Lilywhites insider John Wenham, the 22-year-old centre-back is considered to be a “top young talent” within the club and was even tipped to make a debut against Newcastle United back in October.

The young gem is also a left-footer, which will only bolster his claims of replacing Davies in the starting XI as the Welshman has largely been deployed at centre-back due to him being the only defensive-minded left-footer in the squad.

It may be a while before he truly comes to the fold but it’s clear that he has already impressed Conte enough for him to not only be handed fresh terms but also named in the official squad for the remainder of the season.

In Omole, the Italian head coach could well discover a new Azpilicueta.

Leeds eye upgrade on Jack Harrison

Leeds United retain an interest in Todd Cantwell, according to reports.

Over the weekend, journalist Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Yorkshire outfit have long held an interest in the Norwich City dynamo and he believes they are still keen on signing him during this month’s transfer window.

“Todd Cantwell’s an interesting one. Leeds were very keen on him last summer and maybe the window before that as well, he is someone who’s been on their radar for a long time,” he revealed to GIVEMESPORT.

The 23-year-old is thought to be available for around £15m to £20m, as per the Telegraph.

Leeds broke their club record to sign a winger during the summer transfer window in Daniel James and he has endured quite an inconsistent campaign thus far but so has Marcelo Bielsa regular Jack Harrison.

Of all the players to start ten or more games in the Premier League this term, the former Manchester City man ranks as the Argentine’s second-worst player, as per WhoScored ratings.

From his 16 appearances, the 25-year-old has delivered just one goal and one assist, a vast regression on his returns of eight goals and eight assists in 2020/21.

Meanwhile, even though Cantwell has struggled for minutes for the doomed Canaries this season, he would be an ideal upgrade to Bielsa’s attacking department as he fits the atypical profile of what the 66-year-old likes.

Described as a “god-given” talent by former youth coach Gary Cockaday to The Athletic, the £18m-rated dynamo has been likened to Man City star Jack Grealish in terms of playing style, as well as Spurs midfielder Dele Alli.

He is the sort of player that likes to take on the opposition’s full-back and he can easily change up the pace of a game at a click of a finger. Not to mention the way he can strike a ball so cleanly and his impressive work rate.

A career average of 1.4 key passes and 2.8 dribbles, via WhoScored, suggests that he’s certainly a nuisance in the final third, whilst 1.9 tackles per game in the Premier League this season alone would back up his non-stop energy and commitment to the cause.

“He trains unbelievably hard and in an outstanding way,” once claimed his former manager, Daniel Farke.

Harrison is managing half that number of dribbles per game in the top-flight and is tracking slightly behind in creativity, too, thus showing that there is possibly more potential in the versatile Canaries midfielder.

As such, it would be wise for Leeds to follow up their interest with a bid this month. For around £15m, it could be an absolute steal and in turn, Bielsa would be getting an big upgrade on the misfiring and out-of-form Harrison.

India dominate Sri Lanka on way to final

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were out
Zaheer Khan was India’s best bowler, picking up three wickets, to help bowl out Sri Lanka for 213 and set up a thumping win•Associated Press

India’s best fielding performance in ODIs since the Champions Trophy in September last year set up their march to the final by way of a thumping win. It wasn’t anything spectacular: half chances were taken and easy ones not missed, marking a big improvement on their recent fielding form. That, coupled with impressive bowling from Zaheer Khan and Amit Mishra, pulled Sri Lanka from an explosive start and restricted them to a paltry 213, which was chased down with 17.2 overs to spare.Zaheer was the pick of the bowlers, creating one half chance, and two fairly easy ones. At one stage his figures read 6-2-11-2. Sri Lanka had chosen to bat to allow their bowlers experience first-hand the wet conditions before the final, but it took resilient half-centuries from Kumar Sangakkara and Suraj Randiv to take the match far enough for the dew to set in.If Sangakkara and Randiv had to work hard, India’s runs came withpredictable ease: Gautam Gambhir scored his 19th half-century, DineshKarthik narrowly missed a fourth, and Virat Kohli made it to his fourth 50-plus score in his last five innings. But it was the first 11 overs of the match that staged the decisive action: two wicket-maidens, a wicket in the first over of new spells on three occasions and, between that, scintillating batting from Tillakaratne Dilshan. Coming back from a groin injury, Dilshan decided to do away with the running. He just drove, cut, pulled and late-cut eight boundaries in 17 deliveries to deflate any confidence India and Sudeep Tyagi would have gained from getting Upul Tharanga out in the first over. When Zaheer was brought on, in the sixth over, Dilshan had hit sevenboundaries in his 29, and Sri Lanka nine in their 38. He was pulled for a four second ball. The next ball took a thick edge, and was dying on Gambhir at fine gully before he snared it. Zaheer was pumped, and proceeded to bowl to a plan that worked just fine for him. Nothing to drive, a short cover in place, playing on the batsmen’s patience with the nagging accuracy. Mahela Jayawardene gave in, driving a ball that should not have been driven, and Kohli hung on to a sharp catch at short cover.Back came Sreesanth, whose first two overs had gone for 16, and ThilanSamaraweera walked across to a straight delivery and missed. Forty-two for 1 in 5.2 overs became 61 for 4 in 10.2. Soon Thilina Kandamby was run out, his fifth such dismissal out of 23. This time, though, he was sold a dummy by his captain, and was done in a by a smart throw from Karthik and quick backing-up by Zaheer.Thissara Perera, bounced and verbalised by Zaheer, tried to target Mishra, but Yuvraj Singh pulled out a diving catch at wide long-on, not his last contribution to Sri Lanka’s woes. Sangakkara, who had reached 32 off 42 by then, responded to Perera’s wicket by stepping out and hitting Sreesanth for four. He dominated a seventh-wicket partnership that took Sri Lanka closer to 150, but that’s when Yuvraj struck.Sangakkara had tried to make full use of every loose delivery that came his way, and also took calculated risks to keep the scoreboard from stagnating. But when he pulled a Yuvraj delivery which was too full, he had completed 43 innings without a century. Randiv and Thilan Thushara added 59 for the eighth wicket, a stand that saw Randiv through to his first List A fifty. But when the time came to press on, when they opted for the Powerplay in the 44th over, the tail came up short, and Sri Lanka were bundled out by Zaheer and Mishra, with four overs still to go.If there was any doubt to which way the match was going, Karthik and Gambhir removed it by taking 86 off the first 10 overs. Sri Lanka’s last chance of preventing India from getting the bonus point vanished when Dilshan and Tharanga dropped Gambhir on 41 and 44 respectively.Karthik did no harm to his chances of pushing for a place in further matches by following up a catch and a smart run-out with a dominating role in the opening partnership. He started off with a streaky boundary past the slip but soon got into the groove, punishing errors in both line and length. Anything straying on the pads was flicked through midwicket, and the ones short were cut through point and covers. Gambhir smartly assumed the second fiddle, capitalising on width when not milking singles.Once with Kohli, and with fields spread, the two got down to exploiting the gaps, running almost on intuition, scoring 60 off their 72-run partnership on foot. Upon Gambhir’s dismissal, Kohli asked for the Powerplay and quickly finished Sri Lanka off, accelerating from 33 off 48 to 71 off 68.

Tuskers down Eagles, while Sean Ervine makes grand comeback

A round-up from the 12th round of the Logan Cup

Cricinfo staff06-Feb-2010Assured batting from the trio of Keith Dabengwa, Bonaparte Mujuru and Dion Ebrahim, in addition to Chris Mpofu’s match-haul of seven wickets, were the highlights in Matabeleland Tuskers’ seven-wicket win over Mashonaland Eagles at Bulawayo. Asked to bat first by the Eagles, the Tuskers’ top order set up a strong platform to dominate the match. Mujuru and Ebrahim contributed 70s before Dabengwa took centre-stage. His score of 136 included 13 fours and three sixes, and in the company of Charles Coventry, guided his side to an imposing 425 for 8 declared.Despite Prince Masvaure’s 94, the Eagles’ reply was always behind the eight-ball, as a concerted allround effort from the Tuskers’ attack pegged them back. John Nyumbu picked up three wickets, while Mpofu and Ebrahim scalped two apiece to ensure that the Eagles fell just short of avoiding the follow-on. They fared marginally better in the second dig, reaching an even 300 thanks to Ryan Butterworth’s 102, but would be disappointed with the way they collapsed from the strength of 192 for 2. Mpofu was in the thick of action, striking body blows on either side of a promising third-wicket stand between Butterworth and Forster Mutizwa. Mujuru and Ebrahim struck their second fifties of the game to ensure that the victory target of 140 was achieved in the 33rd over.Sean Ervine marked his comeback to the Zimbabwe domestic scene with a grand display that yielded 364 runs as Southern Rocks managed to hold on for a draw against Mid West Rhinos at Masvingo Sports Club, a middle-order wobble late on the fourth day notwithstanding. The Rhinos had their backs against the wall from the outset, as Blessing Mahwire and Tanyaradzwa Munyaradzi reduced them to 56 for 5. Malcolm Waller then put his head down to score a hundred and take his side from dire straits to respectability. A final score of 267 still looked under-par and required a lion-hearted performance from the bowlers. That was exactly what the Rhinos’ attack provided, reducing the Rocks to shambles at 13 for 4. Enter Sean Ervine. In the company of his brother Craig, Sean counterattacked in majestic style. Craig matched Sean shot for shot in the stand of 178 before falling 19 short of a century. There was to be no letting up from Sean though, as he brought up three-figures and then doubled his score in a batting display of rare dominance. After 22 fours and 3 sixes in 274 balls where he had given his side a lead in excess of 100, he was finally run out, the last wicket to fall. The Rhinos had a tough task on hand, and responded in fitting fashion as Innocent Chikunya and Brendan Taylor added 235 for the second wicket to take their side out of the red. Chikunya was the more sedate partner, striking 75 before falling to Tafadzwa Kamungozi, but Taylor was in a zone of his own. Striking at a rate better than a run-a-ball, he carted the bowlers to all corners, his four sixes and 24 fours standing testimony to the havoc he wreaked. He brought up the second 200 of the match, before falling to the man who had scored the first one. The Rhinos declared at 443 for 5, setting a sporting target of 337 for the Rocks.Early wickets fell again – two on this occasion – leaving Sean to do the repair-work for the second time in the match. And he responded in earnest yet again. Steve Marillier helped him add 131 for the third wicket and raise visions of a stunning chase. The Rocks were then set back by the losses of Marillier and Craig in quick succession, but Sean kept them in the hunt with another audacious display. Tendai Chisoro supported him, as he blasted 17 fours and a six to bring up his second three-figure score for the match. Graeme Cremer sparked a late collapse where three wickets fell for nine runs, prompting Sean to adopt a safety-first approach. His dismissal in the dying stages, for 160, put paid to hopes of a result in what had been a game of fluctuating fortunes.

West Ham eyeing bargain PL ace this January

West Ham United are plotting a move for Nathaniel Phillips in the January transfer window, according to emerging reports…

What’s the word?

Football Insider claim that the Irons are lining up a swoop for the Liverpool colossus at the turn of the year after suffering a devastating season-ending injury blow to first-choice centre-back Angelo Ogbonna.

An inside source has told the site that the 24-year-old, who is way down the pecking order at Anfield, is amongst their list of defensive targets this winter and that the Hammers have been laying the groundwork for a potential switch.

It’s thought that around £12m would be enough to seal his signature on a permanent basis, with the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate all earning minutes ahead of him.

Bargain solution

With Ogbonna facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, there’s no knowing if he will ever return to David Moyes’ plans, especially given that he is currently 33 and in the final year of his contract.

Phillips at 24 makes a lot of sense as he wouldn’t be a temporary short-term fix, let alone an expensive one. His experience across the Premier League and in Europe could even make him a considerable upgrade, having featured 23 times for the Reds across all competitions.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/west-ham-news-transfer-updates-rumours-gossip-david-moyes-gsb-premier-league” title=”Read the latest West Ham news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

The £25m-rated academy gem particularly impressed last season, where he filled in during an injury crisis at Anfield, with Van Dijk absent due to an ACL injury, the very same thing which has now afflicted Ogbonna.

He caught the eye of Reds manager Jurgen Klopp, who dubbed his towering 6 foot 3 defender an aerial “monster” after a particularly glowing display against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

Phillips featured in both matches against the east Londoners in 2020/21 and helped his team to two victories, including one in which he silenced Michail Antonio entirely. As per SofaScore, when Liverpool won 3-1 away to Moyes’ side last January, the Irons talisman was limited to one shot on target and one successful dribble from three attempts, whilst he had only three passes all game and lost 66.6% of his duels.

Indeed, across his time in Merseyside and his loan spell at 2. Bundesliga champions Stuttgart, Phillips has won an average of 4.8 aerial duels per game, as well as four clearances and 1.4 tackles per match, via WhoScored.

Considering his value, experience and availability, Irons head of recruitment Rob Newman could quite easily land Moyes a bargain solution to his centre-back problem with a swoop for Phillips this January.

On the above evidence, he would be a perfect signing to fill that void, with Kurt Zouma the first-choice and another place effectively up for grabs.

Journalist drops Vlahovic to Spurs claim

Taking to Twitter, Daily Express journalist and transfer reporter Ryan Taylor has shared a promising update on Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Fiorentina star Dusan Vlahovic.

The Lowdown: Spurs chase Vlahovic…

Spurs’ managing director Fabio Paratici has had his eye on the 21-year-old ever since the summer window.

Indeed, as explained by The Telegraph, Vlahovic was one of Tottenham’s striking targets at the time as they eyed alternative options to star striker Harry Kane.

Those links have continued well into the latter part of 2021 and especially after Antonio Conte’s arrival in north London, with La Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) going as far as to say that Spurs have already held pre-transfer window meetings with La Viola chiefs.

Sharing more news on Vlahovic, Daily Express reporter Taylor has dropped a promising claim on Twitter.

The Latest: Spurs ‘serious’…

As explained by Taylor, sharing what he’s heard, Tottenham are the only Premier League club who are ‘serious’ about signing the striker in what could be a boost for Conte.

“From my understanding, Tottenham only PL club serious about signing Dušan Vlahović at this stage following background talks last summer,” the journalist said on social media.

“Nothing in the Arsenal links at the moment. Same with Man City but both could enter race.”

The Verdict: Get it done…

Going by this update, it appears that Tottenham’s only real competition for Vlahovic comes from abroad.

Juventus and Paris-Saint Germain are two European heavyweights repeatedly linked with a move for the Serbia international alongside Spurs, but it’s safe to say that the lack of English competition comes as good news.

Scoring 21 goals over the 2020/21 Serie A season, Vlahovic has maintained his brilliant form into the current campaign, with 10 goals and an assist in 13 appearances (Transfermarkt).

While he may cost a pretty penny, with reports suggesting that Fiorentina could demand around €70m-€80m (£59.9m-£68.4m), the striker’s age and proven goalscoring pedigree mark him out as a really fruitful transfer target for Conte.

Indeed, judging by his goal return in recent months, he may well be worth the investment.
