Mohammad Amir: “I was informed that I was fine to play”•AFP

Mohammad Amir, the banned Pakistan fast bowler, has confirmed that he played for Addington in a Surrey Cricket League Division One match on June 4 but said that he took part only because he was told playing would not violate his ICC ban. His comments come in the wake of revelations in the that the ICC is investigating whether he violated his five-year ban for spot-fixing by turning out for Addington.”I was informed by club representatives before the game that it was a friendly match, being played on a privately owned cricket ground,” Amir told . “I asked the club representatives if the match fell under the jurisdiction of the ECB and they informed me that the match did not. I spoke to several club representatives about the issue and they all told me that it was a friendly match and therefore would not contravene my ban from the ICC. I was informed that I was fine to play.”Amir also denied that he had signed any registration documents with the club and insisted that he would never have taken the risk of playing had he known it was an official match.”I would not be stupid enough to knowingly play in a match that I knew would contravene my ban. Wherever I am going to play cricket, the world will know about it. I would not be stupid enough to play in a match where I knew that I would be taking a risk”.Amir was central to Addington’s 81-run victory in the game, against St Luke’s CC. He surprisingly opened the innings and scored 60 before returning figures of 4 for 9 in seven overs. This is not the first time Amir has appeared in a game which has had to be investigated by cricket authorities. Earlier this year in January, when he was under provisional suspension and still awaiting punishment for the Lord’s scandal, he turned out for a Rawalpindi club to play a friendly game. That prompted the ICC and PCB to investigate the nature of the game before the former eventually concluded that it was an unofficial game and the club wasn’t registered with the Rawalpindi cricket association; Amir was thus found to have not broken the ICC’s anti-corruption code of conduct.

Elliott and Blackwell regain the Ashes for Australia

Australia hold the women’s Ashes for the first time in six years after the debutant Sarah Elliott and the captain Alex Blackwell held their nerve to secure a seven-wicket victory. Elliott, the No.3, played the ideal anchor role with a committed 81 not out, while Blackwell increased her pace once she was set and finished with 74.England controlled the first three days of the contest, but Australia’s top order stood up to reach 3 for 198 at the end of a warm day at Bankstown Oval. Elliott and Blackwell delivered the match-winning stand of 125, which ultimately allowed Australia to lift the trophy they handed over to England way back in 2005.Australia, who resumed at 1 for 29 on the final day, lost the opener Shelley Nitschke for 20 when she was lbw to Isa Guha in the morning. Nitschke had put on 46 with Elliott before she was joined by Blackwell for the game’s crucial phase. It was tough going before lunch, with only 48 runs added in the first session, but Elliott and Blackwell were able to lift the rate after the break. By tea they required 30 for victory and the only hiccup came when Blackwell was trapped in front by Katherine Brunt with the second new ball. Elliott, who struck one four in her 262-ball marathon, stayed until the end, hitting the winning run with a single to fine leg.”Sarah has been around the team for a long time now and it was great to see her hit the winning runs,” Blackwell said. “This is just a great feeling and I’m just so happy to be able to bring the Ashes home.”I am so proud of the team. It’s been a great four days and we’ll all remember this for a long time. I was part of the team that lost the Ashes back in 2005 for the first time in 40 years, so to be captain of this team to win them back again is a great feeling and a tremendous honour.”Australia stormed back into the game on the third day when Rene Farrell, the Player of the Match, captured 5 for 23 and helped dismiss the tourists for 149. The one-off Test victory follows England’s 4-1 success in the Twenty20 series.”Obviously I’m absolutely gutted to hand over the Ashes,” Charlotte Edwards said. “Our bowlers did a fantastic job but unfortunately we didn’t put enough runs on the board. We would have liked to make it a bigger chase. I’m proud of how the team has backed each other and really fought to the end. We’ve had a relatively inexperienced side out here and for many of them this was their first Test.”

Embleton stole the show for Sunderland

Sunderland provided a huge response following their midweek stalemate with Plymouth Argyle by taking an impressive 5-1 victory from Cambridge United yesterday.

Alex Neil and his team are now on a 12-game unbeaten run, with the Scottish manager only losing once since he arrived at the club in February, and they now find themselves fourth in the League One table albeit only one point safe in the play-off position.

The Black Cats put in a phenomenal attacking performance that was boosted when Cambridge went down to ten men in the 12th minute of the game, with Lloyd Jones getting red-carded awarding their hosts a penalty which Ross Stewart scored to make it 1-0 a minute later.

Sunderland were dominant throughout the game holding 75% possession, making ten more shots on target and over 400 more accurate passes than their opponents on Saturday afternoon.

Elliot Embleton, Danny Batth and Nathan Broadhead all joined Stewart in getting on the scoresheet delivering five goals in total, and Embleton, in particular, was an absolute force in the attacking threat his team imposed on Cambridge and offered an unrivalled presence.

The 23-year-old who was labelled “complex” by former manager Lee Johnson, made an impressive 141 touches, 113 accurate passes, four key passes and was successful in the majority of his long balls and crosses (12/21).

Embleton has been integral in Sunderland’s play-off charge as of late and has delivered in the moments when it has been needed most, grabbing his opportunities to impress his new manager following a lack of game-time since the Scotsman took over at the Stadium of Light.

Neil had been playing the midfielder off the bench, but he has now finally integrated him back into the starting eleven over the last two games following an assist to the last-minute winning goal against Gillingham and scoring the winner against Oxford in the final moments in the following game, with his contribution earning the Black Cats six points in just 27 minutes of play.

The fight for a play-off place isn’t over with the North-East club safe by just a point with one game in hand over their competitors inside the top six, and with no room for error in the last two games, Sunderland must continue their unbeaten form to boost their chances of potential promotion.

Tavernier wins Rangers award

Jordan Campbell has been left buzzing over some Glasgow Rangers news which has now emerged involving James Tavernier.

The Lowdown: Players’ POTY

The Ibrox club announced on Sunday night that Tavernier has won the Men’s Players’ Player of the Year Award (POTY).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The right-back has been dubbed the team’s best performer in both the Premiership and the Europa League, scoring an astounding 13 goals and supplying a further 15 assists in both competitions combined (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Campbell reacts

Taking to Twitter, The Athletic journalist Campbell buzzed over the update as it was announced, claiming that Tavernier was the ‘clear choice’ alongside Calvin Bassey as Young Player as he stated:

“The clear choice this season, along with Bassey as young player.

“I think this is the best football Tavernier has played of his career as his overall game has been brilliant under Van Bronckhorst.

“He looks more emboldened than ever.”

The Verdict: Deserved

The reward for Tavernier is so well-deserved, and as Campbell suggests, the right-back really seems to have stepped up his game under new manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Under Steven Gerrard earlier this season, the Englishman had managed three goals in total over all competitions. Since Van Bronckhorst’s arrival, he has added another nine, including six crucial strikes in the Europa League to help them all the way to the semi-finals (Transfermarkt).

The captain has certainly led by example, especially in Europe, and while they slack behind Celtic in the Premiership, this could still be a quite remarkable season if they manage to go all the way in the Europa League.

In other news, find out who the Gers are now targeting this summer

Aston Villa targeting Fofana

Aston Villa are targeting a summer move for RC Lens midfielder Seko Fofana but face competition from other Premier League clubs who are also chasing his signature.

That’s according to reports in France this week who claim Villa are admirers of the Ivory Coast international who is rated at £18m.

With Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United also interested there are no guarantees he will choose Villa Park. More demand is also likely to drive the asking price up, and if they’re not careful the club could find themselves in a bidding war.

He’s the new Yaya Toure

The 26-year old is no stranger to England having spent three years playing for Manchester City’s U21 side before moving to Italy where he made 112 Serie A appearances for Udinese. He’s been described as a “phenom” by journalist Zach Lowry such are his extraordinary talents.

Since joining Lens for £7.6m in 2020 he has been a key player for them and so far this season has featured in all of their Ligue 1 games scoring seven goals.

He has been dubbed the “New Yaya Toure” and explained in an interview how they ‘hoped he would succeed Toure’. Despite this not working out, whilst at the club he received a lot of good advice from first team players and was coached by Patrick Vieira.

It also seems like he’s not the only player in France that the Villans have their eye on, with manager Steven Gerrard recently spotted watching a Marseille game reportedly there to scout Boubacar Kamara.

When you compare Fofana to Villa’s Douglas Luiz the man he would likely be competing with, he performs better in many areas.

Fofana excels in possession compared to Luiz with 131 more progressive carries this season. He also has a higher percentage of successful dribbles at 59% compared to 43%. With that in mind, it’s evident to see why he’s been compared to Yaya with strength and ball-carrying both major strengths.

He would be a perfect addition to the Villa team and could link up well in a midfield three alongside Jacob Ramsey and John McGinn.

However, with the money that both Spurs and Newcastle could offer, as well as the prospect of competing in Europe and for silverware, Fofana may decide to go elsewhere.

Howard candidacy, FTP top of agenda at ICC conference

The ICC is set to hold its annual conference week in Singapore, which will commence on Sunday with a meeting of the Chief Executives Committee (CEC) and conclude with the inauguration of Sharad Pawar as the seventh ICC president. Pawar will succeed David Morgan who finishes his two-year term next week. The ICC executive board is also set to discuss the nomination of John Howard for the role of vice-president, which has been marred by controversy with a number of boards opposing his candidature.Since his days as Australia’s prime minister, Howard has endured a torrid relationship with Zimbabwe cricket, often being a vocal critic of Robert Mugabe’s regime. South Africa and Zimbabwe initially expressed their opposition to Howard’s nomination, and they were later joined by Sri Lanka, leaving him vulnerable to being disqualified. Howard recently met with ZC chairman Peter Chingoka and managing director Ozias Bvute in a “friendly, constructive and frank” exchange of ideas, following which there are indications that Zimbabwe may change their stand on the issue.”A section of the international media has erroneously created the impression that we have been at the forefront of a motion to block Mr Howard’s nomination. This is not only maliciously incorrect but also ignores the fact that our structures dictate that such a decision can only be taken by the ZC Board which is in fact still to meet and state a position on the matter,” Bvute said.Bvute also indicated that past tensions are unlikely to influence Zimbabwe’s final decision. “We are not vindictive people regardless of how badly we have been portrayed and treated in the past. Our concern has and always will be the welfare of the game. Our final decision and vote will be guided by what is in the best interest of cricket in this country.”Chingoka however, was non-commital on the issue. “I don’t have much to say, we had a friendly discussion, it was very constructive, we were very honest and frank with each other. The matter will be discussed by the ICC, so I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to say any more,” he was quoted in the .Another pressing issue that will be addressed at the CEC meeting is to do with the Future Tours Programme (FTP) for the period of 2012-20, in particular the introduction of greater context and content for international cricket. The subject has already been under consideration by a working group consisting David Collier (England and Wales), Nishantha Ranatunga (Sri Lanka), N Srinivasan (India), James Sutherland (Australia) and Dave Richardson (ICC general manager – cricket). An ICC event covering both the Test and ODI formats is likely to be discussed. The ICC executive board will also receive a recommendation from the CEC on the implementation of the decision review system across the board in Test cricket, as well as in the 2011 World Cup. Additionally, the CEC will consider and recommend to the board the eligibility rules and the stand-out period for moving from Associate to Full Member status. The executive board will receive updates on the formulation of the ICC strategy for the period 2011-2015, and the design of mandatory safety and security regulations drawn up by Security Task Force, chaired by Lord Paul Condon, set-up following the Lahore attack last year. The board will also consider Seychelles’ application for Affiliate Membership of ICC. If successful, Seychelles will become the 105th Member of the ICC. Meanwhile, the ICC Associate and Affiliate Members will nominate their ICC executive board director representatives, who serve a two-year term, at their meeting on 28 June 2010.The schedule of meetings is as follows:Chief Executives’ Committee: June 27 and 28
Associate Members: June 28
ICC Executive Board: June 29 and 30
IDI Board: June 30
Annual Conference: July 1
The ICC board meetings will be attended by the the ICC president, vice-president and chief executive, in addition to representatives from the ten Full Members and three Associate Member representatives.
