Southampton set to miss out on Moreno

Southampton look set to miss out on another of their summer targets, with reports claiming that Santiago Moreno is set to complete a move to Portland Timbers.

What’s the word?

Along with Leeds United and Rangers, the Saints were linked with a move for the 21-year-old by The Telegraph earlier this year.

The winger has established himself as a regular at America de Cali in recent seasons and has been likened to Sadio Mane due to his style of play, which suggests that he could have been a hit at St Mary’s.

Mane was signed by Southampton from RB Salzburg back in 2014 and made 75 appearances for the Saints in two seasons, contributing 25 goals and 14 assists before completing a £34m move to Liverpool in the summer of 2016, where he has gone on to become one of the top wingers in world football.

However, Moreno’s agent has now claimed that he is very close to joining MLS side Portland Timbers, as he told El Pais: “There are other possibilities on the table, but the one we are working on at the moment and the closest to a deal is Portland.

“‘Santi’ leaves very grateful to the fans of America de Cali, he fulfilled his dreams and understands that leaving young will also give him the opportunity to return at a good time.”

A blow for Southampton?

During his time in the Liga Dimayor, Moreno has featured 52 times for America de Cali, contributing an impressive 10 goals and seven assists.

Although he may well have been an option for the future rather than one who could’ve made an impression in Hasenhuttl’s side next season, that he was attracting so much interest suggests that he has a lot of potential, and Southampton may well rue not signing him this summer.

If Moreno can progress even further in the MLS with Portland Timbers, then it would not be a surprise to see his name mentioned as a potential target for top European sides again in the future, when the sense of regret for the Saints over missing out on him could well be exacerbated.

Everton ‘very close’ to appointing Benitez

If you thought that Everton could move for another target in the managerial market, think again.

Lucien Favre’s expression that he doesn’t want to return to management just yet has come at the wrong time for the frustrated Goodison Park faithful.

What’s the word?

The 63-year-old rejected Crystal Palace yesterday but, despite that development, it looks as though Rafa Benitez will become the new manager of Everton.

Speaking before the Favre news came to light, The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe was certain that the Spaniard would be arriving in Merseyside again very shortly.

O’Keeffe was speaking on BBC Radio and said: “Nuno Espirito Santo came and went but I think Rafa Benitez has been the frontrunner for over a week now.”

He continued: “I believe that they are edging very very close to an announcement whereby they can confirm that he [Benitez] will become the next Everton manager.”

Not good news

This is an update which is likely to leave many supporters tearing their hair out over what’s going on at Everton.

When Carlo Ancelotti walked into the club, there was a sense of astonishment amongst fan groups that they’d been able to lure one of the game’s most decorated coaches to Goodison.

However, the way in which he left was almost just as mind-boggling. The Toffees were preparing for an exciting summer of transfer recruitment as Ancelotti got to sink his teeth into the finances available in Merseyside.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-transfer-nuno-conte-wood-marcelo” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

However, the lure of Real Madrid is great and it was a proposal which was simply too hard to turn down for the Italian. If that left fans of the club upset, they could be downright devastated when Benitez finally enters the building.

Although his CV is impressive – he won the Champions League with neighbours Liverpool – it’s his association to the red side of Merseyside which has irked certain individuals around L4.

Benitez has enjoyed a respectable career but, during his successful spell across Stanley Park, he dubbed Everton a ‘small club’. Although he has since apologised for those remarks, things aren’t forgotten very quickly in Merseyside and it would appear that fans are reluctant to see him arrive.

The news that Favre is now also off the table will be a further dagger to the heart after Christophe Galtier rejected the Toffees earlier in the week too.

With Nuno edging closer to Spurs and Galtier potentially heading to Nice, Everton are running out of alternatives to Benitez. Unfortunately for their supporters, he looks set to arrive imminently, with anger beginning to grow larger.

Sarwan's late spark

Grenada’s inaugural Test was slipping back into an increasingly deep sleep when it was roused from its slumber in the final 25 minutes of the fourth day Monday, reawakening West Indies’ hopes of a dramatic victory on the final day Tuesday (the day after WEEKEND NATION press time) to square the mini-series.Enlivened on the previous afternoon by Chris Gayle’s special dose of power-hitting, the match had once more been anaesthetised by a cocktail of a torpid pitch, limited West Indian bowling and a New Zealand team that had nothing to play for but the draw to put against their first Test triumph. As the shadows lengthened, Carl Hooper was at his wits’ end as to how to end an opening partnership of 117 between Mark Richardson and Lou Vincent that had capitalised on two early missed chances and occupied three-and-a-half hours. With the still, lifeless pitch offering nothing to his main bowlers, whom he repeatedly switched around, and Richardson and Vincent already transforming a first innings deficit of 97 into a lead of 30, the captain summoned Ramnaresh Sarwan to try his hand from the River End.There is no more confident cricketer and, when he trundles his leg-spin in the nets, Sarwan considers himself at least the equal of Shane Warne. The last time Hooper asked him to break a stand, he responded with two wickets from successive balls in the Barbados Test against India in May.This time he struck with his third ball that had a Warne-like quality about it. Cleverly disguised, it was quicker and flatter than the previous two and sneaked under Vincent’s surprised bat to hit off-stump, bowling him for 54.Six overs later, Hooper’s sharp off-break that pitched outside leg-stump found the edge of rival captain Stephen Fleming’s uncertain bat on its way to Brian Lara at slip.Richardson, following his first innings 95 with another dogged innings, was unbeaten 69 as he and fellow left-hander Chris Harris nervously batted through to the end when New Zealand, 139 for two, were 42 ahead. It left the West Indies with a slim, but realistic, chance of pressing for the result that would bring their prolonged international season to a satisfactory end over the minimum 90 overs that remained. The likeliest outcome? A draw.

West Ham fans flock to Pereira and Johnstone news

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have gone wild for a transfer admission by manager Valerien Ismael concerning West Bromwich Albion duo Matheus Pereira and Sam Johnstone.

Both men have been heavily linked to the Hammers recently, with football.london believing West Ham are looking to sign Johnstone this summer as a replacement for Lukasz Fabianski.

Meanwhile, attacking midfield ace Pereira could be seen as an alternative to Jesse Lingard as West Ham eye a possible move this summer (Daily Express).

As per reports, both men could also go for cut prices, with the Athletic detailing Johnstone could be snapped up for in and around £10 million while Pereira is expected to cost around £25m (Daily Star on Sunday via Hammers News).

Now, West Brom boss Ismael has dropped a transfer admission on both the reported West Ham targets – confirming he fully expects them to leave this summer (BT).

As this news emerges, taking into account the previous claims on price tags, many Irons supporters have pleaded with the club to get a deal done and raid the Championship club.

Indeed, there were no shortage of replies to West Ham Fan Zone, who shared Ismael’s admission and the valuation claims on Twitter.

Maguire: West Ham don’t need to sell Declan Rice - Exclusive

West Ham are under no pressure to sell Declan Rice this summer, football finance expert Kieran Maguire has told The Transfer Tavern.

Rice continues to be linked with a move to Chelsea, with The Telegraph claiming that Thomas Tuchel is a fan of the player, while Fabrizio Romano claimed on his ‘Here We Go’ podcast, via Give Me Sport, that Chelsea are in talks with his representatives.

Last year, it was reported that West Ham owed £70m from player transfers, which may sound worrying to some supporters.

However, after borrowing money over the last 12 months, Maguire is confident transfer fee issues can easily be addressed without having to sell key assets.

“No, I don’t think they have to sell,” The Price of Football author exclusively told TT. “They have borrowed money over the course of the last 12 months, so that will allow them to deal with those transfer fee issues.

“If they choose to sell, it’s because somebody comes in with a really good offer for Declan Rice. They won’t be in a firesale or liquidation sale environment, where you’re desperate to sell in order to keep the bank manager happy, so I think they’re in a strong position this summer.”

It is great news for manager David Moyes, who will not want to lose any of his star players after such a successful season.

The Hammers, of course, were able to qualify for the Europa League after finishing sixth in the Premier League table, and the Scotsman will surely be hoping to build on that and make sure it was not a one-off.

Hyderabad to get new cricket stadium

The Andhra Pradesh government would allot 21 acres of land for the construction of a cricket stadium of international standards in the state capital. Announcing the decision on Monday at a function to felicitate star batsman VVS Laxman in Hyderabad, state home minister Deveder Goud said the government would allot the land at Bandallagudem on the city outskirts to the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) within one week.”We will hand over this land to you in one week and we expect you to complete the stadium in two years time”, he said in response to a request made by HCA officials for a piece of land for a new stadium, as the Lal Bahadur Stadium was not upto international standards.Earlier, Laxman was presented a cheque of Rs one lakh and silver plate by Goud for his performance in the recently concluded series against Australia. Laxman was also handed over a cheque of Rs 29,000 given by the Tamil Nadu government for his performance in the Chennai Test. Speaking at the function, Laxman thanked all the officials, coaches groundsmen and fans for the encouragement given to him overthe years.Former cricketers Mohd Azharuddin, Arshad Ayub and Venkatapathy Raju were among those who attended the function.

Predicted Rangers XI to face Hibernian

Rangers face Aberdeen at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon, with Steven Gerrard’s side safe in the knowledge that a draw will be enough to see them finish the season with 100 points and unbeaten in the Premiership.

The Gers have enjoyed a superb campaign thus far and look set to earn invincible status when they take on Stephen Glass’ side in their final fixture of the 2020/21 campaign.

Gerrard’s men produced an excellent display against Livingston in midweek, with goals from James Tavernier, Ryan Kent and Ianis Hagi securing a comprehensive 3-0 win, whilst Aberdeen lost out 1-0 against Hibernian, which ensured that they would finish the season in fourth.

Here’s how Football FanCast expects Gerrard to line up at Ibrox this weekend, with two changes from the side which started against Livingston on Wednesday night…

After Jon McLaughlin filled in between the posts on Wednesday, it seems likely that the “outstanding” Allan McGregor, as Gerrard has called him, will return to the starting lineup for the season finale.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-rangers-news-transfer-rumours-and-more-copy-copy” title=“Latest Rangers news, transfer rumours and more from Ibrox!”]

Rangers are low on defensive options, so the back four stays the same for this one, with Joe Aribo in particular impressing his manager with his performance as a left-back in midweek.

There is one change in midfield, as Scott Arfield adds some experience after Gerrard confirmed that the Canadian could make his return from injury in time for the fixture, and he starts alongside Steven Davis and Glen Kamara.

This allows Ianis Hagi to move back out to the right wing in place of Kemar Roofe, who wasn’t at his best on Wednesday, with Ryan Kent on the opposite flank supporting Alfredo Morelos.

Moreno signing would be bad for Djenepo

Southampton have been linked with Santiago Moreno recently, and if he were to join Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side this summer, it could spell bad news for Moussa Djenepo.

According to The Telegraph, the Saints, Leeds United and Rangers are all keen on signing the 21-year-old from Deportivo de Cali this summer. The report suggests that his style of play has been compared to former Saints winger Sadio Mane, whilst he is expected to be able to adapt to the demands of Premier League football.

During his time with the Liga Dimayor side, the young winger has contributed 10 goals and seven assists in just 49 appearances, which suggests that he can add a goalscoring threat in Hasenhuttl’s team next season should Martin Semmens bring him to St Mary’s this summer.

This could spell trouble for Djenepo, who has struggled to perform consistently since his move from Standard Liege in the summer of 2019, with just four goals and two assists to his name in 51 appearances for Southampton.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

This season has been particularly disappointing for the Mali international, as he has managed just one goal and no assists in 27 Premier League appearances, earning a less than impressive 6.37 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

This ranks him as the 17th-best performer in Hasenhuttl’s side this season, which suggests that the 22-year-old could soon find himself surplus to requirements should another winger arrive at St Mary’s this summer.

Considering that Nathan Tella has perhaps already moved ahead of Djenepo in the pecking order at Southampton, whilst Theo Walcott’s loan move has been made permanent, it seems likely that the Malian will struggle for game time with the Saints next season unless his performances drastically improve.

Therefore, the addition of a young exciting winger such as Moreno, who seems to have much more of an eye for goal than Djenepo, could spell serious trouble for the latter’s future in Hasenhuttl’s side.
