New ball bowler Lalit Patel did most of the damagefor Gujarat with a five wicket haul.Saurashtra suffered an early blow when opener Prashant Joshi retiredhurt in the first over of the match, bowled by Hitesh Majumdar. He didnot resume his innings during the day. The first three wickets fellcheaply but with the score on 70, Kotak and Parsana joined hands in afourth wicket association yielding 106. Both batsmen were scalped byPatel with Kotak the first to depart, bowled for an obdurate 68 (217balls, 3 fours). From a healthy 176/3, five wickets tumbled for 42 and play was calledoff at the fall of the eighth wicket, four balls ahead of stumps. Dale defies Kent in Swansea

A defiant three and a half hour innings by Adrian Dale, supported by apugnacious 31 from Alex Wharf thwarted Kent as Glamorgan ended a rain-affected second day on 177 for 8 in their Championship match in Swansea

Andrew Hignell26-May-2001A defiant three and a half hour innings by Adrian Dale, supported by apugnacious 31 from Alex Wharf thwarted Kent as Glamorgan ended a rain-affected second day on 177 for 8 in their Championship match in Swansea.Kent`s hopes of making early inroads were dampened by a combination ofdrizzle and mist, which prevented a start from being made until 3pm. Whenplay eventually began, Adrian Shaw clipped the first ball from MartinSaggers to the fine leg boundary for four, and the Glamorgan wicket-keepercontinued to punish any loose deliveries, hitting two more boundaries inSaggers` fourth over. This flurry of runs prompted Kent captain Matthew Fleming to introduce BenTrott into the attack, and it proved a shrewd decision, as with his fifthdelivery Trott dismissed Shaw when the Glamorgan wicket-keeper edged arising delivery into the hands of David Fulton at second slip. Then in his next over, Trott nearly claimed a second wicket as Robert Croftedged a ball through the hands of third slip for four. But after this earlyscare, the England off-spinner played himself in, and twice straight droveTrott to the Mumbles Road boundary.Adrian Dale continued to play watchfully at the other end, having earlieralso punished some loose bowling from Saggers. But the introduction ofPatel`s left-arm spin slowed the scoring rate, and with Patel extractingsome lavish spin at times from the dry Swansea wicket, the Glamorganvice-captain adopted a cautious approach. In the third over after tea Croft was bowled off his pads by a slower ballfrom Fleming. But Dale then found a useful ally in Alex Wharf, who was sooninto his stride, twice on-driving the Kent bowlers to the boundary, inaddition to an exquisite cover drive off Saggers. The pair had added an invaluable 55 in 19 overs when Wharf was bowled byPatel, attempting another blow off the back foot. It was the left-arm spinner who eventually ended Dale`s stubborn resistance, as the Glamorgan vice-captain got a thick edge to a ball and was caught at slip by Fulton. In the closing overs, Darren Thomas rode his luck and played a few lustyblows to leave Glamorgan 75 runs in arrears.

Celtic: Eddie Howe agreement claim emerges

Celtic have reached an agreement with Eddie Howe over becoming the club’s new permanent manager, according to credible journalist Stuart Hodge.

The Lowdown: Howe finalising his backroom staff

Links with the former Bournemouth boss replacing Neil Lennon emerged at the beginning of April, but they appeared to die down after the 43-year-old reportedly had second thoughts about taking the Parkhead gig.

He spoke to Crystal Palace about potentially succeeding Roy Hodgson at Selhurst Park, but it seems as if Sean Dyche is the Eagles’ number one choice to replace the former England manager.

It now appears as if a move to Glasgow is back on for the ex-Cherries boss, though, with Howe reportedly finalising his backroom staff at the end of April.

The Latest: Announcement in ‘very near future’

According to Hodge, who shared the news on Twitter on Saturday, an announcement on Howe is expected in the ‘very near future’.

The journalist added that the 43-year-old will become Celtic’s 21st permanent manager, stating:

“Hearing from various sources now that an Eddie #Howe agreement has been struck and that #CelticFC will announce him as manager in the very near future. The Englishman will become the 21st manager in the history of @CelticFC.”

The Verdict: Howe must be motivated by Hoops job

To us, this is a huge boost for the club, as it looks as if they have finally got the man Dermot Desmond met in London for talks six weeks ago.

During that time, Roy Keane and interim boss John Kennedy have been linked with the full-time managerial position at Celtic, but neither of them has the experience Howe boasts. He has more than 500 games of experience in the dugout, with Keane and Kennedy having fewer than 200 combined.

Howe admitted back in November that his next role in management would have to be one which ‘really motivated’ him, and it seems as if he is fully on board with the Hoops’ rebuild after Hodge’s enlightening update.

Liverpool fans urge Sancho to join Reds

Some Liverpool fans have been urging Jadon Sancho to move to Anfield this summer, hijacking a tweet from the Borussia Dortmund star.

The 21-year-old has emerged as arguably one of the most exciting young attacking players in Europe in recent years, excelling for Dortmund after joining from Manchester City in 2017.

Sancho has scored 46 goals and registered 62 assists in 133 appearances for the Bundesliga giants, thriving alongside the likes of Marco Reus and Erling Haaland.

Constant rumours have surrounded the England international’s future, with a host of English clubs being linked with a move for him, including Liverpool.

It could be that Jurgen Klopp sees the forward as ideal competition for his current attacking players, not to mention being a long-term replacement for the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

On Sunday, Sancho tweeted a video of his trickery as he sent an opponent to the floor, cheekily mocking the incident in the process.

Elyounoussi urged to leave Saints

Frank McAvennie has urged Southampton man Mohamed Elyounoussi to move permanently to Celtic as he has no future at St. Mary’s.

Elyounoussi should leave Saints

Elyounoussi has spent this campaign and the last on loan at Parkhead from the Saints, managing 24 goals and 13 assists in 62 matches (Transfermarkt).

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie believes he must leave the south-coast outfit permanently. He said:

“He had an outstanding weekend and scored great goals. I had my doubts about him but he’s shown what he can do.

“He blows hot and cold but he brings Celtic a better balance when he’s out on the left. He comes in and scores goals but by and large he gives you width.

“There’s no doubting he’s a good player, it just depends how much Southampton want for him or if they’d give us another loan because he obviously won’t get a game for Southampton.

“He’s happy at Celtic and another loan deal won’t bust the bank. I’m not sure he has a future at Southampton.

“He enjoys it up here and if the money was right I’d keep him, he proved that he’s worth it at the weekend. I’d take a chance on him.”

Worth a risk

Elyounoussi signed for Southampton in 2018, but failed to score or provide an assist in 18 matches before being loaned out to the Bhoys. With 102 career goals to his name, it is clear he has plenty of ability, but for whatever reason it didn’t work out for him initially with the Saints.

Ralph Hasenhuttl recently revealed Southampton will only be able to sign players for £10m or less this summer (via Sky Sports), indicating he will have to work with a small budget. As such, it may be worth the Austrian boss giving Elyounoussi another chance to show what he can do.

Villa need new winger after Trezeguet blow

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that his old side must go out and buy a new winger following Trezeguet’s injury.

The Egyptian could be out for some time after damaging his ACL in a recent 2-1 defeat to Liverpool, which could leave Villa light as they wait for him to recover and build up his fitness again over what is likely to be a very long period.

Bearing that in mind, Hendrie is convinced that the Villans need to add another wide player to their squad in the summer, an area he feels needed strengthening anyway.

Speaking exclusively to TT about the matter, the ex-Villa star said:

“They’re going to have to strengthen that area because I feel that’s been an area where they haven’t supplied enough to Ollie Watkins at times. He’s created and been amongst his own goals at times.

“So, yeah, not only the ACL, which is so disappointing for Trezeguet, the last thing you want to see is a player getting injured and such a bad injury in that sense, but the build to get back to your full fitness. You’re possibly talking minimum 12 months, so they’re going to have to go and strengthen that area.”

In the meantime, manager Dean Smith will have to rely on the likes of Anwar El Ghazi and Bertrand Traore as Villa continue to battle for a top-half finish and possibly even a European spot, with eight games left to play.

Aguero could upset Leeds dressing room

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer has warned Sergio Aguero’s wages could upset the Elland Road dressing room.

Leeds have emerged as shock contenders to sign Aguero this summer when his contract at Manchester City expires, with 90min reporting that Marcelo Bielsa has identified the 32-year-old striker as a replacement for Rodrigo.

Rodrigo has failed to make a real impact this season following his move from Valencia last August, struggling with injury, and it now appears that an exit could be on the cards.

It would leave Bielsa perhaps needing to bring in a new forward as mentioned. But if that man happens to be Aguero, Palmer believes issues at the club could arise.

On Leeds’ reported interest in the Argentina international, he told FFC:

“You bring somebody like Sergio in on huge money and the rest of the players are behind him, then you’ve upset the dressing room and the apple cart.”

According to Spotrac, Aguero is currently on a weekly salary of £230,000, making him one of Manchester City’s highest earners.

It reamins to be seen whether Leeds would be willing to pay anything close to that, but targeting a player of Aguero’s profile does at least show ambition.

Ex-PL man: Bamford is in ‘perfect’ spot

Former Premier League star Keith Gillespie believes Patrick Bamford is at the perfect club as he looks to gatecrash the England squad for the European Championships this summer, he has told Football FanCast.

The Leeds United striker has scored 14 goals in 30 Premier League outings this season as Leeds have risen as high as 11th in the Premier League table.

They are currently 16 points clear of the relegation zone, with the trapdoor now firmly in the rear-view mirror.

Bamford’s form has led to suggestions he could be selected for England, although manager Gareth Southgate overlooked him for his most recent squad, instead picking Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins as his back-up striker behind Harry Kane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, of Tottenham Hotspur and Everton respectively.

Watkins scored in the 5-0 win over San Marino.

Gillespie, though, believes Bamford is in the perfect place to keep scoring goals and make an impression ahead of the Euros this summer.

He told FFC: “I think he’s found the perfect home, Bamford.

“That’s not to say he couldn’t go on again because I have been impressed with him. I think there’s a chance that he could make that squad for the Euros for England. You look at someone like Ollie Watkins, who’s done really well, it’s maybe a toss-up between them two, who was going to be that choice of strikers in that squad. Watkins came on and scored, and does really well, but Bamford is definitely knocking on the door.”

Gillespie also thinks top-six clubs will be on alert with Bamford continually turning in excellent performances.

He added: “I’m sure clubs are maybe standing up and taking notice, he knows where the back of the net is and he’s proved that this season.”

Moyes reacts to Lingard miss for West Ham

Speaking to the press, via football.london, West Ham United manager David Moyes has reacted to Jesse Lingard’s absence for the Manchester United clash, with the Scotsman describing it as a ‘big loss’ as the January signing is ineligible to play against his parent club.

Lingard has starred for the Hammers since signing on loan at the London Stadium, scoring four goals and providing one assist in just six Premier League starts (WhoScored), but he will not feature against the Red Devils this evening as the 28-year-old is ineligible for the clash.

Moyes reacts to Lingard absence

Moyes has described it as a ‘big loss’ for West Ham as they aim to mount a late assault for a top four finish, coming as the Irons boss also explained there are some ‘slight doubts’ behind the scenes for a couple of players (West Ham United official website).

“A big loss because he has had a big impact on the team and how we have played,” said Moyes to reporters (via football.london).

“He has been a positive signing for us since coming in in January so it is a loss to us but we have got other people.

“What we wanted was competition for places, sort of around the number 11 and number ten roles, we wanted good competition and Jesse has given us that but we have other people who can do that so hopefully we can go there and who them what we can do.”

Transfer Tavern take

Lingard’s fine start to his Hammers stint has been emphasised recently by former Premier League striker Ian Wright, who told Premier League Productions (via HITC) how ‘devastating’ he can be.

Time will tell who Moyes will have at this disposal for the Old Trafford clash, but who he chooses to replace Lingard in the team will be interesting to see.
