West Ham backed to move for Broja

West Ham have been backed to make a move for Southampton striker Armando Broja, with the youngster currently impressing on loan from Chelsea.

The Lowdown: Broja impressing for Saints

The 20-year-old moved to St Mary’s Stadium on a temporary basis last summer, in order to earn more playing time away from Stamford Bridge.

Broja has impressed for Saints, leading the line well and scoring six goals in 11 Premier League starts, also chipping in with two Carabao Cup strikes.

It seems unlikely that the Albanian will play a big role at Chelsea for the foreseeable future – they have £100m Romelu Lukaku, £72m Kai Havertz and £48m Timo Werner to keep happy – and with West Ham eyeing up summer additions, he has been backed as a potential target.

The Latest: Broja backed to make move

Speaking to Give Me Sport, journalist Alex Crook of talkSPORT claimed the Hammers should consider making a move for the young striker, even though another year on loan at Southampton appears most likely:

“That’s the most likely outcome [another year at Southampton], but teams like West Ham and Newcastle would be foolish not to at least have a try.”

This comes after claims that an absolute promise has been made to David Moyes from GSB, ensuring he will have cash to splash with a proper strategy in place to attack the market this summer.

The Verdict: Shrewd summer signing

While it may be difficult to snap up Broja permanently, given his potential ceiling at Chelsea and the fact his contract there is until 2026, a loan move could add much-needed attacking depth to Moyes’ squad.

The youngster has been hailed as ‘dangerous’ by Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and he has won an average of 2.9 aerial duels per game in the league this season, showing the type of physicality which could make him the perfect deputy to Michail Antonio.

The Hammers have long needed an adequate support for the Jamaica star, and Broja’s age and profile suggest they should look on further.

Rangers eyeing Martin Fraisl

A big update has emerged on Rangers and Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s plans to replace Ibrox veteran Allan McGregor this summer…

What’s the talk?

According to the print edition of the Daily Record on 5 April [page 48], via Ibrox News, the Gers have made Schalke shot-stopper Martin Fraisl their number one transfer target heading into the window, with the Scottish giants setting their sights on their first signing.

The report claims that there are doubts over McGregor’s future at the club and the 2. Bundesliga gem is set to be available on a free transfer as his contract with the German outfit expires at the end of the season.

GVB needs him

Gio van Bronckhorst needs the Austrian goalkeeper badly heading into next season because McGregor has made himself a liability in the Premiership this term.

The 40-year-old has cost the club too many times in the Scottish top-flight and it is time for a changing of the guard between the sticks in Glasgow.

SofaScore have him down as making three errors directly leading to goals and one error directly leading to a shot in the Premiership. Whilst these are worrying statistics as it is, they do not take into consideration goals that you would expect a Rangers goalkeeper to stop.

For example, his weak parry straight into the path of Tom Rogic against Celtic last weekend did not go down as a direct error, but it was a mistake from the shot-stopper that got the Hoops level in the match. His failure to stop an effort going through him at the near post against Motherwell in a 2-2 draw also escaped that tag, with these incidents illustrating how costly his blunders have been.

This is why van Bronckhorsst needs a new goalkeeper badly and Fraisl can be the man to take McGregor’s place in goal at Ibrox. Schalke Sporting director Rouven Schroder dubbed his form “excellent” and his statistics in the 2. Bundesliga back that up, with an average SofaScore rating of 6.83.

The 28-year-old has also made zero errors directly leading to goals in the league this season. Whilst it is hard to say whether or not he has made the type of mistakes the Scot has made that do not go down as direct errors, it does show that he drops fewer clangers than the veteran.

The £5.9k-per-week gem is also quoted in the report as saying: “I have made it my aim to play the last 10 years at least of my pro career at the same club.

“I want to play until I’m 42. My body resembles that of an 18-year-old.”

This suggests that he is willing to be loyal to the Gers and will be in it for the long haul if they decide to snap him up this summer. It is an attitude that the fans will surely love as it suggests that he has the potential to enjoy a fantastic spell with the club if he is able to deliver on the pitch.

NUFC: Magpies agree deal to sign beast

A major update has emerged in Newcastle United’s attempts to sign Bayer Leverkusen beast Mitchel Bakker…

What’s the talk?

According to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, the Magpies have agreed a deal in principle with the Bundesliga club as they close in on their third signing of the window.

The report claims that they are now poised to discuss personal terms with the full-back, as Eddie Howe looks to add to the two signings he has already made this month in Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier.

Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope claimed over the weekend that he is valued at £16m by Leverkusen, although the exact figure Newcastle have now agreed for Bakker remains to be seen.

Delight

Newcastle fans will be delighted with this news for several reasons.

Firstly, it suggests that the club’s third signing of the window is not a million miles away as PIF have been able to agree a fee with the German outfit, which shows that they are working hard behind the scenes to get things completed.

Supporters will also be happy with the club’s efforts to bolster Howe’s squad, with this news making it clear that bids are going in and negotiations are happening as the window progresses.

They want to add to the team to improve their chances of avoiding relegation and the signing of Bakker could be a strong step in their journey to doing so.

The left-back position has been a big problem for the ex-Bournemouth head coach this season and the Dutchman could come in and nail down the role.

Paul Dummett started at left-back in the 1-0 win over Leeds and was dribbled past twice, whilst losing 50% of his ground duels, before being taken off with an injury – with Jamal Lewis also having been out since the 16th of December.

Bakker has played 13 times in the Bundesliga for Leverkusen this season and featured in 26 Ligue 1 matches for PSG last term, showing that – at the very least – he is reliable in terms of his availability. He has also made 2.3 tackles and interceptions per game in the German top-flight, whilst registering one goal and three assists.

This suggests that he could add an extra attacking dimension to Newcastle’s side along with being a strong defender who can step in and win the ball back for his side.

Therefore, fans will be delighted to read that the club have agreed a deal for him.

Southampton want permanent Broja transfer

Last summer’s transfer window was a particularly busy one for Southampton, who brought in the likes of Valentino Livramento, Lyanco, Romain Perraud and Adam Armstrong on permanent deals.

Armando Broja also came to St Mary’s over the summer on a loan move from Chelsea until the end of the season.

Even though the 20-year-old is currently expected to rejoin the west London club when his deal at Southampton expires, it seems as though there could be a possible change of plans in that regard.

What’s the news?

In a recent Twitter post from Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, Southampton are “aware of interest building” in Broja from other clubs and want to sign him on a permanent basis from Chelsea.

Since arriving at St Mary’s, the Albanian has scored seven goals in 19 appearances across all competitions so far this season, showing how much of a capable and useful attacking outlet he has been for Ralph Hasenhuttl despite not getting much senior action at Stamford Bridge.

With his goalscoring efforts in mind, it’s easy to see why Southampton would want to have him on a permanent basis rather than give him back to Chelsea at the end of the season.

In terms of the 20-year-old’s future, with the Blues having the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner in their squad who can or predominantly play at centre-forward, it would be hard to see Broja getting as much game-time at Stamford Bridge next season as he has been at Southampton.

This could persuade the player to stay with the south coast club on a permanent basis rather than potentially wasting his time at Chelsea if he isn’t going to be guaranteed regular game-time under Thomas Tuchel.

Moving forward, either this month or in the summer transfer window, Southampton should definitely approach the west Londoners to see whether or not they would be willing to negotiate a suitable deal whoch would see Broja become a permanent Saints player and continue his career there. That would surely please Hasenhuttl and a lot of Southampton fans, especially if the Albanian can continue finding the net with regularity.

Warne 'thinking twice' about IPL participation

Shane Warne has raised concerns about playing in the IPL this year and believes the organisers may need to think about moving it again after a terror threat against sporting events in India

Shane Warne: “We moved it last year at short notice, so it can be done.”•AFP

Shane Warne has raised concerns about playing in the IPL this year and believes the organisers may need to think about moving it again after a terror threat against sporting events in India. Last year’s event was relocated to South Africa and Warne said it was something that should be considered again this season.”The threats of the past 24 hours have certainly got me thinking twice and is of deep concern to athletes across several sports,” Warne told the . “If the threats are proven to be real, then organisers of the IPL may look at moving the tournament.”We moved it last year at short notice, so it can be done. There is no way organisers will risk the safety of players and officials.”Warne will wait for advice from security expert Reg Dickerson before deciding whether to head to India for the tournament, which begins on March 12. The threat specified the Hockey World Cup, the IPL and the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, where players will be staying in the relative safety of an athletes’ village, unlike the IPL players.”We’ll be staying in hotels and travelling on buses and as we saw with the Sri Lankan team in Lahore, it can be dangerous,” Warne said. The paper also reported that Australia’s high-profile players were considering hiring their own security staff for the tournament.

Leeds backed to sign Ross Barkley

Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley is a player Leeds United are targeting in the January transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Barkley a Chelsea outcast

The 28-year-old has struggled for playing time at Stamford Bridge this season, starting just one Premier League game and finding himself way down the midfield pecking order.

Barkley may still have aspirations of making England’s 2022 World Cup squad, in order to add to his 33 caps, but will of course may need to play more for that to happen.

The former Everton man has been linked with a January loan move to Leeds in recent days, as Marcelo Bielsa eyes up reinforcements in the middle of the park.

The Latest: Journalist confirms Leeds’ interest

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke confirmed Barkley is indeed on Leeds’ list of potential signings, talking up the idea of the move happening:

“I believe he is on their list of targets. Leeds have had a slow start to this season by their standards from last season and are sitting at the wrong end of the table.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-27/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Exciting midfield option

Barkley hasn’t fulfilled his huge promise as a youngster, having been compared to Liverpool and England legend Steven Gerrard, but he remains a talented footballer who could be a good addition at Leeds.

Former Aston Villa manager Dean Smith described him as ‘tremendous’ during his loan spell at Villa Park last season.

Barkley would offer something different to more defence-minded figures such as Kalvin Phillips and Adam Forshaw, scoring and assisting eight times apiece for Everton back in 2015/16.

Granted, he hasn’t been as prolific since then, but his ability to create chances – he has averaged 2.5 key passes per game in the Carabao Cup this season – coupled with Bielsa hopefully improving him and re-finding that confidence in the final third, means he is worth the risk on loan.

Konate must start for LFC vs Arsenal

With their 3-2 defeat against West Ham United now behind them, Liverpool’s next Premier League clash sees them take on another tough opponent in Arsenal who are not only one place and two points behind Jurgen Klopp’s side in the league table, but they are also unbeaten in the league since August.

On the chalkboard

With this in mind and the fact that Mikel Arteta’s side have managed to score eight goals in their previous four league games, one player that should be in consideration to be in Klopp’s starting XI on this occasion is centre-back Ibrahima Konate.

Despite only playing in four games for the Merseyside club so far this season after arriving at Anfield during the previous summer transfer window from German club RB Leipzig in a deal worth a reported fee of £35m, Konate has managed to keep a clean sheet in three of those games, including their 5-0 win over Manchester United, keeping Cristiano Ronaldo quiet in the process.

This performance, in particular, not only earned the Frenchman an overall match rating of 7.2/10 from SofaScore but also heavy praise from Reds captain Jordan Henderson who described Konate’s performance against the Manchester club as “outstanding” after Konate made eight clearances, one tackle and won three of the four duels he was involved in.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-liverpool-news” title=”Check out the latest Liverpool news!”]

Despite this, Konate, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £70k-per-week according to Spotrac, didn’t manage to have a similar sort of impact during their 2-2 draw against Brighton & Hove Albion where the Liverpool Echo said that he was “a little slack on occasion” in terms of his distribution and decision-making.

However, with Joel Matip racking up a fairly disappointing overall match rating of 6.4/10 for his performance against West Ham from SofaScore, this could be a good time for Klopp to give Konate his chance back in the team again and put his shaky display against Brighton behind him.

Looking ahead to the Arsenal match, Konate has definitely shown during his time with the Reds that he has what it takes to step up to the plate in big fixtures such as the match at Old Trafford and dominate opposition attacking players, which he could well do against the Gunners.
