Spurs want the Sessegnon brothers

[ad_pod ]

According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham Hotspur are prepared to offer Premier League strugglers Fulham £20 million to sign Ryan and Steven Sessegnon in the upcoming summer transfer window.

What’s the story?

Ryan Sessegnon has been in and out of the Cottagers’ starting XI this season. Last year, in the west London club’s promotion campaign from the Championship, the 18-year-old was an integral part of the side, scoring fifteen goals and racking up six assists over the course of the league season.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

The left-sided starlet has failed to truly find his feet in the top flight so far though. However, his efforts to acclimatise to the Premier League have been hampered by Fulham’s wider issues on and off the pitch – which has led them to the their current position in the relegation zone.

Sessegnon’s twin brother, Steven, is also on the books at Craven Cottage. The right-back is highly-rated by the club’s academy staff, but is yet to make his Premier League bow.

A double steal

Whilst Ryan Sessegnon has struggled to really shine this season, the England under-21 international remains a hugely exciting talent. He certainly belongs at the top level, and should Fulham get relegated this season then there ought to be plenty of Premier League clubs interested in his services.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has already demonstrated his ability to aid the development of young English talent with Dele Alli and Harry Winks. Ryan Sessegnon could be the next man on the conveyor belt.

What’s more, the Fulham ace could also prove to be the answer to Spurs’ left-back woes. Ben Davies lacks attacking quality whilst Danny Rose is inconsistent and injury prone. If Sessegnon were able to mature defensively then he could become a key weapon in Pochettino’s arsenal.

His brother is also a talent and worth a punt, especially if he helps Ryan settle in north London. All in all, £20 million for the pair would have to be considered an absolute steal.

Wolves boss Nuno Santo given a rave review by Paul Merson

Wolves boss Nuno Santo has been held in high acclaim this week after a glowing endorsement was thrown his way by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.

What’s he said?

The west Midlanders drew to Manchester United at the weekend on an early evening that was marked by the occasion of Bruno Fernandes making his debut following a blockbuster move from Sporting Lisbon.

And despite Wolves winning just one of their last eight matches in all competitions, the Portuguese manager has been given a rave review by Merson, who was touting him to be the next man to take the helm at Old Trafford.

Speaking in his recent column, he said:

“I think Wolves have got every chance [of finishing in the top four], they have got the firepower – Jimenez, Jota and Traore, the most improved player in the history of football! Those three can hurt anybody on any given day.

“This manager does not get the credit he deserves, I think he is up there with the best in the business.

“When you talk about Man Utd looking at managers, I am thinking: ‘How are you not getting this man?’ This bloke is as good as anybody, I think he is one of the top managers in the world of football in my opinion.”

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson.

Glowing review

Quite surprisingly, it’s mighty hard to disagree with Merson. Nuno is one of the most underrated managers in the division currently, but he has a little while to go before he can be considered in the same bracket of Champions League-winning Jurgen Klopp and multi-title winning Pep Guardiola.

Wolves’ meteoric rise over the past few seasons can be attributed, in most part, to the 46-year-old.

Since he took over in the summer of 2017, the Molineux-based side have won the Championship title and have since gone on to make the Europa League knockout stages at the first attempt.

Now they are competing regularly for a place amongst the top-flight elite – Nuno’s men currently sit just two points from a top-five berth as we enter the final portion of the season.

For away day veterans only: Can you name all of these defunct stadiums?

Should he guide them to European glory this season or edge them closer to breaking the top four, then serious conversations can be made about the Portuguese being up there with the very best.

And in other news, returning Wolves man the protagonist behind them ending a damning trend….

Opinion: Matt Cheetham’s Ross Barkley suggests he’s more creative than Gylfi Sigurdsson

The likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Andre Gomes have injected plenty of creativity into Everton since arriving at Goodison Park but there is statistical evidence to suggest that neither playmaker has impacted the club quite like Ross Barkley.

Ross Barkley’s reputation at Everton was already beginning to dwindle significantly when he left the club last January. Sporadic bursts of quality and the occasional long-range strike hinted that he could blossom into the real deal, but patience wore thin amongst the Toffees faithful and his departure was not viewed as a massive loss to the club.

But, statistically speaking, there is evidence to suggest that Barkley’s impact at Everton was greater than supporters might have thought.

Indeed, Sky Sports journalist, Matt Cheetham, has dived into the statistics to form conclusions concerning the root of Everton’s problems, and he discovered that Barkley’s departure has left them short of a creative hub in midfield.

‘Creativity, specifically from open play, has been a regular issue for Everton over a number of seasons. In the last three, Ross Barkley remains the club’s most creative player, despite not playing a single game in two of those three seasons.’

Barkley tops the list with 56 chances created in 36 appearances, leaving Leighton Baines in second with 54 in 58 and Sigurdsson in 5th with 37 in 48.

Naturally, it must be considered that the statistics are, to a degree, down to interpretation: debates over what constitutes a chance created are par for the course and, what about all the times Sigurdsson, for example, has played a killer ball to a teammate who in turn creates the chance?

It also must be noted that Barkley has topped a list of chances created from open play, and the likes of Leighton Baines and Gylfi Sigurdsson would presumably see their numbers rise if dead ball situations were included in this particular sample.

But, regardless of the technicalities of the statistical research, it’s clear that, in a creative sense, Barkley had a much greater impact at Everton than perhaps the supporters gave him credit for.

West Bromwich Albion fans rage on Twitter after club’s fixtures are changed for TV

One of the biggest enjoyments for plenty of football fans when the fixture lists come out is to plan which games to attend.

However, those plans can be thrown up in the air when dates are changed for broadcasting reasons.

This week, West Bromwich Albion announced that their away trip to face Ipswich Town has been rearranged for Friday, November 23.

Also, their home clash against Aston Villa, who now have John Terry as assistant manager, has been moved to December 7.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”305269″ player=”12034″ title=”Are Emery’s Arsenal Silently Gunning For The Title”]

The news of the newly-arranged Friday fixtures have not gone down well with supporters, as many will now have to alter their plans after buying a ticket.

The reason for the scheduling change is down to Sky Sports, who have picked up the pair for broadcasting.

At the moment, the Baggies are enjoying a positive run in the Championship as they sit second in the table, one point adrift of leaders Sheffield United after 12 games.

Aston Villa set to sign Andre Moreira who will provide healthy competition between the sticks

Aston Villa have signed Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Andre Moreira on a one year loan deal according to The Sun.

What’s the story?

The 22-year-old has been on the books at the Spanish giants since 2014 but has spent all his time out on loan and is yet to make a senior appearance for Atletico.

He was most recently at Portuguese side Belenenses where he made ten appearances since joining and the prodigy is understandably unlikely to displace Jan Oblak in goal for his parent club.

Steve Bruce also has Mark Bunn and Jed Steer to choose from but they are now without star Sam Johnstone who excelled in his loan spell at the club last season.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”257600″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Aston Villa’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Championship season”]

Unknown quantity

Moreira is something of an unknown quantity in English football unlike Bunn and Steer who have a wealth of experience in the football league.

It will be interesting to see who Bruce plumps for as his no.1 but the healthy competition can only be a good thing for the Villans.

Youngster’s superb display will have Spurs fans asking ‘Walker who?’

If you ever needed an example of how far removed the transfer market now is from reality, Tottenham debutant Kyle Walker-Peters provided it perfectly on Sunday as the visitors beat Newcastle United 2-0 on Tyneside.

Just a matter of weeks ago, Manchester City splashed out a staggering £50million on the 20-year-old’s namesake Kyle Walker and although he impressed on his Premier League debut for the Citizens as well, contributing effectively in a 2-0 win over Brighton, the ease in which KWP stepped into the England international’s shoes was the top flight’s real right-back story of the weekend.

St. James’ Park has proved too intimidating an environment for countless Premier League players before, but Walker-Peters produced a performance of maturity, energy and quality on the right of defence, finishing the first half with the most touches of the ball of any Tottenham player.

By the final whistle, the youngster had racked up the most tackles of any Spurs player, alongside three clearances, five crosses, one dribble and a 91% passing accuracy – incredibly impressive considering it was his first Premier League outing and that he continually looked to venture forward as much as possible rather than simply shifting the ball sideways.

No doubt, Walker is a fantastic talent, but Spurs fans will have already forgotten about the City signing after Walker-Peters’ fine display against the Magpies. It’s also quashed calls for Mauricio Pochettino to sign another right-back who can compete with Kieran Trippier before the summer window slams shut, with the youngster seemingly up to the challenge.

In Walker-Peters, Tottenham have managed to fill the void of a £50million player without spending a penny. That might just convince some of the Premier League’s clubs to temper their frankly irresponsible spending.

Southampton confident of beating Barcelona to Caceres

Southampton remain confident of signing free-agent Martin Caceres despite Barcelona’s emerging interest, The Daily Echo reports.

What’s the word?

Southampton are on the verge of signing free-agent Martin Caceres and are confident of a deal for the Uruguayan defender going through, despite the recent emerging interest of Spanish giants Barcelona.

Barcelona have started looking at avenues for a signing at right-back following a devastating injury to Aleix Vidal, which has left the player sidelined for the remainder of the season, leaving them with only Sergi Roberto as a capable option.

Whilst Roberto has impressed at stages this season, the young Spaniard was one of many underperformin players in Barcelona’s remarkable 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening, which has left the Catalan giants on the brink of a Round of 16 exit from the Champions League.

Caceres would be joining a world-class squad at Barcelona but it seems the Spanish side’s interest in the 29-year-old has come too late, as a deal with Southampton is set to go through.

Where does Southampton’s deal stand?

Southampton are hopeful that Martin Caceres will join them on a squad trip to Spain, scheduled to take place before the trip to Wembley for the League Cup final last month, but have seen a deal delayed by personal incidents in the Uruguayan’s life.

Caceres has travelled back to Uruguay following the shock death of his brother, which he heard of whilst in Italy- as he waited on the continent for a work permit to go through that would allow him to complete his move to the Saints.

Claude Puel’s side are confident that a deal for Caceres is watertight and expected a deal to be confirmed this week. However, given the extenuating circumstances, they are understandably allowing time for the veteran defender to grieve the loss of his sibling.

QPR’s dream end of January XI

Hasselbaink has had a pretty poor start to his time with QPR and it has only got worse as the R’s have lost Charlie Austin in the January transfer window.

If the Dutchman is to help fix his club’s woes then it will be crucial that they reinvest properly in this transfer window, too. Losing a star player can do a huge amount of damage to a Championship level side and Hasselbaink will need to turn things around after this window to prove that he can cut it at a higher level, after impressing as manager of Burton.

Promotion is a distant hope at this moment in time, but, with how quickly things can change in the Championship, it would be foolish to rule anything out, regardless of how poor the form has been for the West London club.

Could this be the XI to help the R’s make it back to the big time?

Alex Smithies

With Rob Green likely to be on his way out of the club this window, Alex Smithies looks like he is set to maintain his spot as QPR number one.

James Perch

This ex-Newcastle man has been remaining optimistic around the media after QPR’s recent poor form and is one of the ideal utility players in the Championship.

Perch could feature in the XI in almost any position.

Nedum Onuoha

Onuoha has never really matched the potential that he had when he was at Manchester City but is a player that is comfortably good enough for Championship football.

Able to cover at full-back Onuoha is a valuable member of the squad.

Joleon Lescott

With Aston Villa’s woes throughout this campaign, Lescott wouldn’t be at fault if he was looking to move on in this window and the ex-Manchester City centre-back would be able to provide crucial experience to the QPR squad.

Paul Konchesky

Another player with years of Premier League experience, Konchesky is a reliable left-back and has been well suited to his role in this QPR side.

The former Charlton man has featured in 28 games this season.

Alejandro Faurlin

After some horrible injuries, Faurlin is back to the quality midfield performances that he was producing a few seasons ago.

The Argentine central midfielder has a reassuring presence in the middle of the park.

Considering the signing of Jonjo Shelvey, Anita’s role in the Newcastle squad is now under threat and, if Premier League clubs overlook him, he would be a stunning signing for any Championship club.

The Dutchman, like Perch, is a very versatile player and would be a brilliant technician for the Championship.

Matt Phillips

After his wonder strike in the Premier League last season, it is a surprise that Philipps has stayed at QPR and Hasselbaink would do well to keep his flying winger at the club in this window.

Massimo Luongo

This Australian midfielder has the most assists in the entirety of the QPR squad and is a dominating player in the centre of their side.

Luongo is crucial to making the Rs tick and will need to perform in the second half of his career.

Enzo Crivelli

With competition for his signature believed to be very high, Crivelli would be quite a coup for QPR.

A young forward with this level of promise would be quite an addition for the fans at Loftus Road and could step into Charlie Austin’s boots.

Conor Washington

QPR looked to League One when they needed to replace Charlie Austin and Washington comes into the squad with a huge amount of pressure.

If the ex-Posh star can’t find the net on a regular basis the decision makers at QPR may move him on rather quickly.

Everything Dan Ashworth touches turns to gold! No wonder Man Utd are so desperate to hire Newcastle's director of football who helped set England up for tournament success

If the Red Devils are committed to enacting genuine change at Old Trafford, they need to pay Newcastle what they want

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is used to side-stepping difficult questions in press conferences, but even he struggled to evade the media's recent bombardment regarding the future of sporting director Dan Ashworth. Ex-England development chief Ashworth has been heavily tipped to join Manchester United and, speaking before his side's draw with Bournemouth on Saturday, Howe admitted that his presence at the game felt a little strange.

Asked whether the 52-year-old should even still be working at the club, due to the sensitive information he has access to, the Magpies boss replied: "That is not a question I can answer, it is for someone above me. I think your concerns are relevant. I share your feelings."

Newcastle's decision-makers were clearly listening to this uncomfortable press conference, and on Monday, Ashworth was placed on gardening leave while the club hammered out terms with United. If he does make the move to one of the world's biggest sporting institutions, it would represent a quite staggering rise, considering his unexceptional early football career.

Getty ImagesHumble beginnings

Long before he was placed in charge of an entire nation's footballing future, Ashworth was released by Norwich City as a youngster. Wanting to stay in the game, he took in non-league spells at the likes of Eastbourne Town and St. Leonards, as well as travelling to the United States to play at West Florida Fury. He supplemented his income by working as a PE teacher.

But he soon discovered that his talents may be better utilised off the pitch, rather than on it. Ashworth earned his first coaching badge as a teenager and after his modest playing career came to an end, he took over as Peterborough's academy director at the turn of the millennium.

A year later, he would be appointed Cambridge United's centre of excellence director and soon started turning heads. So much so that, in March 2004, Aidy Boothroyd recruited him to assist in the running of West Brom's own youth development centre.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe big break

Boothroyd's departure for Leeds United a few months later kickstarted Ashworth's ascent to the top. Instead of hiring from the outside, West Brom promoted him to the top job, placing the young man in charge of all of the Baggies' youth development.

Chairman Jeremy Peace was seriously impressed with his performance in this position, and three years into his tenure he was bumped up again, this time to sporting and technical director. While this kind of role is now familiar to British football fans, at the time it was a bold step. Then-West Brom manager Tony Mowbray was certainly impressed, lavishing both Peace and Ashworth with praise in a recent interview with .

“Dan took a lot of the burden off me,” he said. “I’d even call Jeremy Peace a bit of a visionary for appointing him.” He added: “Dan’s very good at bringing people together and getting the maximum out of everything and everyone. He dilutes conflict and oils the machine to make it run seamlessly.”

GettyThe impossible job

And it wasn't just Mowbray that Ashworth impressed during his time at The Hawthorns. By the early 2010s, English football's powerbrokers were also taking notice.

In 2012, the Three Lions were at the lowest ebb of their modern history. The men's 'Golden Generation' had not lived up to their sky-high potential, failing to deliver a single piece of silverware, while the women's team were reaching the end of the Hope Powell era, with chronic underfunding contributing to disappointing tournament finishes in 2011 and 2013.

It was in this deflated atmosphere that Ashworth began work as England's director of elite development. He was given a wide-ranging remit, being tasked with making the country's new St George's Park training base feel like home, as well as orchestrating a turnaround in fortunes at the men's, women's and youth-team levels.

It would be simplistic to say that Ashworth's work is entirely embodied in the England DNA document he helped draft, though it provides an extremely useful insight into his influence.

Published in 2014, Ashworth said at the time: “As a football nation we have long been characterised by our passion, fighting spirit and effort. Although there are aspects of these characteristics we wish to retain, we do not wish to be solely defined by them.”

The blueprint was long, but the most relevant sections were a detailed breakdown outlining the various England teams' collective style of play. Key points were a desire to "intelligently dominate possession, selecting the right moments to progress the play and penetrate the opposition" and aiming "to regain possession intelligently and as early and as efficiently as possible."

There was a focus on uniformity through the age groups, too. "England development teams will play with tactical flexibility, influenced by the profile of the players and the requirements of the match or competition," another passage read.

The other key aspect detailed what the "future England player" would look like, with "technical, tactical, physical, psychological and social" elements all emphasised. This holistic approach was much needed, as part of the failure of the 'Golden Generation' was down to players from competing Premier League clubs being unable to put rivalries aside when they met up for international camps, as well as the collective mental strain so many years of failure took on the group.

In addition, during Ashworth's time at the helm, the popularity of all England teams has skyrocketed, with the strict code of conduct he helped implement a big reason why.
