Injury list grows ahead of Euro 2016

This summer’s European Championships in France have been eagerly anticipated by players and supporters alike for months in the build up to the competition. However, the increasing list of absentees from the tournament now means that managers are being left with selection headaches leading up to their final squad announcements later this month. The recent news that Belgium’s Vincent Kompany will miss the entirety of Euro 2016 adds to the already significant group of some of Europe’s biggest names that will not be representing their nation come June.

The likes of Italy’s Marco Verratti and German duo Bastian Schweinsteiger and Ilkay Gundogan are just some of the major names missing out on the tournament in which hosts France are currently the 11/4 favourites with bookmakers Coral to claim glory on their home turf. Didier Deschamps’ men however are not without problems themselves and will be missing the talents of Real Madrid frontman Karim Benzema as a result of his ongoing dispute with the French Football Federation. Long term injuries also mean that Les Bleus will be without defensive duo Kurt Zouma and Aymeric Laporte.

As far as Roy Hodgson and England are concerned, the return of fit again Jack Wilshere looks set to make the Arsenal man a certain inclusion in the squad for the summer. England are 5/6 with Coral to win Group B and progress to the latter stages of the tournament, and will be looking to the likes of Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy to provide the goals to fire them to glory. Tottenham’s Kane is 14/1 with Coral to follow in the footsteps of Alan Shearer and become the tournament’s leading goal scorer. Shearer also will be reporting on the Euros for Coral and will certainly be hoping his side can claim an historic first European Championship title.

Danny Welbeck came off injured in his side’s recent draw with Manchester City and will not be fit in time. The former Manchester United man looked on worryingly from the side-lines at the Etihad, with his absence offering hope to Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge. Indeed, Sturridge is now 1/6 on in the Euro 2016 tips with Coral to be on the plane to France with England this summer despite an inconsistent campaign.

Dier joined Bayern from Spurs on loanHas exercised option to sign permanentlyBayern had already paid €4m loan feeGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

The initial deal, inked during the January transfer window, stipulated a loan period until the culmination of the ongoing season, with an option for Bayern to extend it for an additional 12 months. On Saturdaythe Bavarians confirmed officially that they have exercised this option, binding Dier to the club until June 2025, demonstrating their confidence in his abilities and potential contributions to the team.

AdvertisementWHAT ERIC DIER SAID?

After his transfer was made permanent, the English defender told the club's official website, "I’m happy in Munich. Now my future is sorted, and I can focus on playing well for the club and trying to help the club to win games, win competitions, even though it’s been a difficult period for us."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The earlier agreement involved Bayern paying a reported €4 million (£3.4m/$4.3m) loan fee to Tottenham. However, they can register Dier as a free agent once his contract in north London expires at the end of the campaign. The club's hierarchy has hailed his performance in his six appearances for the club and was particularly impressed with him during Bayern's recent 2-1 victory against RB Leipzig.

DID YOU KNOW?

Dier's departure from Tottenham was partly influenced by his diminishing role within the team after Ange Postceoglou took over. The arrival of Radu Dragusin during the winter transfer window further limited Dier's playing time, with other defensive options like Ben Davies and Emerson Royal often being preferred over him.

'We need to improve' – Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall has very different opinion on Women's Champions League qualification to Man Utd manager Marc Skinner

Arsenal Women boss Jonas Eidevall says his team are at fault for not qualifying for the Champions League and refused to blame the competition format.

Arsenal knocked out of UWCLMan Utd eliminated by PSGEidevalls says WSL must improveWHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal were knocked out at the qualifying phase when they were beaten 4-2 on penalties by Paris FC. That, coupled with Manchester United's defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the following round, means Chelsea are the only Women's Super League to make the group stage of the competition this season.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

United manager Marc Skinner slammed the competition's format as he argued that United and PSG should not have been paired against each other so early, saying: "We deserve to be at this level. There are teams that are going through that are not good enough."

However, Eidevall believes that it is up to English teams to improve to reach the same level as their French and German counterparts and pointed out that they could have ended up with no WSL teams in the competition at all.

WHAT THEY SAID

"We’re number four in Europe [in UEFA's coefficient rankings]. We can’t say that’s anyone else’s problem except our own. We need to improve. English teams have not done well enough in Europe," he told reporters.

He added: "The reality is that if Wolfsburg had beaten Barcelona in the Champions League final [last season], the WSL wouldn't have had a single direct qualifying spot for the group stage. Our league is ranked fourth in Europe and why is that? The English teams have done worse than the Spanish and the German and the French teams for the last five years. That is no one else's problem: that is our own.

"If I look at it from the Arsenal's perspective, being in the WSL is a very competitive league. Do I think there is a lot of themes in the WSL that could compete in the group stage in the Champions League? I do. I think the Conti Cup group that Man United have been drawn into might actually be tougher than some of the Champions League groups. But those who decide on the UEFA Women's Champions League, they need to grow the whole of women's football in Europe. They are not just taking the WSL into account."

Ultimate Ghana dream team: Abedi Pele & Essien in, Gyan out

There's no place for Asamoah Gyan in the Black Stars' greatest-ever XI, which is testament to their strength

Few African nations have developed as many talented players as Ghana, who have produced six African Footballer of the Year winners and enjoyed the services of some of the continent’s all-time greats.

But who would make an all-time XI of the Black Stars’ finest players?

We’ve selected the best of the country’s legendary team from the 1960s, the Africa Cup of Nations-winning heroes of 1978 and the generation that reached the quarter-final of the 2010 World Cup to put together the ultimate Ghana Dream Team.

  • GK: Robert Mensah

A giant of the domestic game, Mensah was part of the legendary Asante Kotoko team of the 1960s that culminated in victory in the African Clubs Cup in 1970.

He also featured for the Black Stars at both the Africa Cup of Nations and Olympic Games in 1968, winning a silver medal in the first event.

Renowned for his playful antics on the pitch, as well as his awesome goalkeeping fundamentals, Mensah made enemies aplenty with his mockery of opposition strikers, occasionally even reading a newspaper while keeping guard between the sticks!

Ghana was plunged into mourning when he was murdered – aged only 32 – in 1971.

    CB: Samuel Kuffour

Kuffour enjoyed a successful 12-year spell at Bayern Munich, an unprecedented feat for an African player to have such a long and trophy-laden tenure at one of Europe’s genuine elite.

During that period, he won six Bundesliga titles, as well as the Champions League in 2001, having been on the losing side two years earlier when Manchester United’s treble-winners staged their remarkable Camp Nou comeback.

Kuffour’s international career preceded the Black Stars’ glorious run at the 2010 World Cup, although he was part of the side that secured the nation’s first qualification for the global showpiece four years earlier.

  • CB: James Kuuku Dadzie

An Africa Cup of Nations winner with Ghana in 1978, Dadzie was one of Africa’s finest defenders during the late 1970s and even made the Team of the Tournament for his performances en route to the title.

He was also celebrated for his leadership skills, having captained the national side at the 1980 Afcon, and since retirement, has claimed that he’s the greatest central defender the national side has ever known.

He represented both Sekondi Hasaacas and Asante Kotoko in his homeland, and has coached Ghana’s women’s team – among other assignments – since retirement.

  • CB: Charles Addo Odametey

The first member of the glorious Ghana team of the mid-1960s to make the cut, Odametey captained the Black Stars to success at both the 1963 and 1965 Nations Cups as they established themselves as the team of the decade.

The Hearts of Oak great was also a key figure in the side that reached the final three years later, only to fall to a fine Democratic Republic of Congo team.

Mexicans Abroad Best XI: The top El Tri players in Europe in the 2018-19 season

While Mexico national team players continue to return to North America, some are still standing out in Europe's top leagues.

With many Mexicans returning to Liga MX or joining MLS, times are lean for Mexicans Abroad.

Diego Lainez joined the contingent this season, moving from Club America to Real Betis, but most ofthe players who stood out this year are familiar faces.

Some of them, like Raul Jimenez, had career years with the forward standing out at Wolves in a way few fans thought possible. Others, like Diego Reyes, took a step or two back and were unable to find consistency.

Which Mexicans enjoyed the best seasons on the Old Continent? Here are Goal's selections for the Mexicans Abroad Best XI for the 2018-19 season:

1The Mexicans Abroad Best XI 2018-19Guardado and Layun would have to play slightly out of position, but this team could work together.AdvertisementMiguel Riopa2F | Jesus Corona | PortoHis days with the Mexico national team look to be over, but Corona had a quality season in Europe. He was active in Porto's UEFA Champions League run and a regular in league play. He also flashed his versatility, playing some right back when the team had a bit of a defensive crisis because of injury midway through the year. It's the ability to get behind the back line and make something happen that El Tri will miss as the dispute between him and the coach continues.3F | Raul Jimenez | WolvesRaul Jimenez moved to Wolves, got into the starting lineup and quickly made clear he wasn't going to give up his place any time soon. What followed was one of – if not the best – seasons for a Mexican player in the Premier League. He matched Chicharito's record of 13 goals in a single Premier League season, earning the 10th spot on the scoring charts and helping Wolves to a spot in the Europa League. He also added seven assists, plus four goals in the FA Cup. There seems to be little doubt that Raul is the forward of the present and the future for El Tri.ENJOYED THIS STORY?

Getty Images4F | Hirving Lozano | PSVLozano's sophomore season didn't get as much buzz as the first one. Instead of ending with "Chucky" lifting the trophy, it ended up with him getting stretchered off the field. Yet the 23-year-old matched his goal total from last season with 17 goals in 30 matches played – one more than last year. He also added the challenge of Champions League games, netting four goals in the continental tournament. If he's played his last match with PSV, he had an amazing two years with the Dutch side.

Gritty Ballance provides Yorkshire foundation

Gary Ballance scored an unbeaten half-century as he and Jack Leaning helped revive Yorkshire on a day of interruptions at Edgbaston

George Dobell at Edgbaston24-Apr-2016
ScorecardGary Ballance helped Yorkshire rebuild•Getty ImagesThere is an expression they use around these parts to describe notable buildings. Knowing they cannot get away with the word “beautiful” – Birmingham has many qualities, but few would claim beauty was one of them – they ascribe the word “iconic” instead. The Bullring is “iconic”. The Mailbox is “iconic”. The new pavilion at Edgbaston is “iconic” and no doubt the redeveloped New Street Station will be described that way, too.So perhaps that is the word that should be used to describe innings by Gary Ballance. Certainly there was nothing beautiful about this one. He didn’t so much hit a half-century as nudge, deflect and accumulate one. There were, of course, some of those trademark cut strokes – he is not one to miss out on the short ball outside off stump – and some pleasing cover drives, two of which could legitimately be called beautiful, but this was, on the whole, a demonstration of patience, restraint and discipline. Those qualities have become somewhat unfashionable in modern cricket. But against a good attack, on an April pitch offering the bowlers some assistance and with his side in trouble, Ballance and Jack Leaning provided the fortitude their side required. Coming together with the score on 85 for 4, the pair have so far added 92 for the fifth wicket.Ballance’s technique drew a great deal of scrutiny last year. While it is true he does tend to play unusually far back in his crease, he does this, in part, so as not to be drawn into pushing outside off stump. So while others, not least Adam Lyth, might go searching for the ball and edge to slip, Ballance has the patience to wait all day. Then, having forced the bowlers into his areas, he is strong off his legs, plays as straight and late as the best of them, and can still put away anything over-pitched effectively. He also has an unusual stroke where he turns balls behind square that seems to keep bowlers interested but brings him copious runs.He was probably a little unfortunate to be dropped from the Test team last summer. While he had a tough game against Australia at Lord’s, he had contributed a typically gritty 61 in the previous game at Cardiff and contributed in an important stand with Joe Root. This innings at Edgbaston was not dissimilar in some ways: it never looked simple, but he found a way, in tricky conditions, to contribute.Ballance does have another gear. Given the chance, he has a range of more aggressive strokes. But though there were a few pleasing moments here – a gorgeous, flowing drive through extra-cover, played on one knee, off Rikki Clarke, and a well-timed cover drive off Keith Barker – he reasoned that his side required him to bat long in such testing conditions. He scored only 4 from his first 30 deliveries and his half-century occupied 119 deliveries. The watching England selector, James Whitaker, cannot but help to have been impressed.”He absorbed a lot of pressure,” Jason Gillespie, the Yorkshire coach, said. “He knows which zones he is strong in and he sticks to them. I didn’t agree with the decision to drop him last summer.”This was an important innings from Leaning, too. With Root returning to the Yorkshire side next week, he looked like the batsman most likely to make way for him. And while he was less solid than Ballance – his strength square of the wicket lures him into flashing at deliveries outside off stump – he benefited from some loose, leg-side bowling from Boyd Rankin and showed admirable fight. On a chilly day interrupted often by rain and bad light – 38 overs were lost ultimately – it was not easy for batsmen or bowlers to gain rhythm. Warwickshire will feel they lacked consistency with the ball and Yorkshire will feel their top order remains more vulnerable than they would like. Having won the toss and chosen to bat – a sure sign that this is a decent pitch given the cold and wet start to the summer – they were in danger of not taking advantage. Warwickshire, too, would have batted had they won the toss.Alex Lees’ drive was beaten by inswing, losing his middle and off stumps, Adam Lyth scooped an attempted pull to mid-off and Andrew Gale dragged on a swinging full toss. It tends to take a fine delivery to dismiss Jonny Bairstow at present and Chris Woakes produced one – an inswinger that would have made James Anderson proud – to defeat his drive and take the off stump.Woakes, understandably delighted by the delivery, later admitted that he had been working on his inswinger of late having noticed its effectiveness reduced after he added pace to his bowling. But Ballance’s fortitude blunted the attack and helped Yorkshire finish the day with honours even.On such a cold, grey day, Gillespie could hardly be forgiven if he dreamed of a life back in Australia. It seems there is an opportunity: Darren Lehmann, the Australia coach, recently said that Gillespie would be “at the forefront” of those considered for the Australia bowling coach role that is currently vacant. While Gillespie did not rule out such a move, he said there had been no contact as yet and reiterated his commitment to a Yorkshire side seeking a third successive Championship title.”I haven’t had any contact with anyone about that,” Gillespie said. “There’s nothing to report. I’m focused on my role here. You don’t rule out any opportunity in the future if you feel you can make a difference but I have four kids under 10 and family comes first.”

Mohammad Shahzad's action cleared by ICC

UAE medium pacer Mohammad Shahzad’s bowling action has been cleared by the ICC and he can resume bowling in international cricket.Shahzad, 35, was reported for an illegal bowling action after the ODI against Afghanistan in November 2014 along with offspinner Salman Farooq.Shahzad’s elbow extension was suspected to have exceed the 15 degree tolerance and he was required to undergo testing. His action was studied at the University of Pretoria earlier this month. The ICC said the bowler can be reported for a suspect action in future if he failed to replicate the corrected action in a match.

Worcestershire have secured a deal to bring Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal back to New Road in 2015 for at least the second half of the season from July.Ajmal, 37, has successfully remodelled his action after being cited for throwing, sending down 12,000 deliveries, and was cleared to bowl again by the ICC last month.Worcestershire could have Ajmal available for the first two months of the season if Pakistan’s tour to Bangladesh, pencilled in for April and May, does not go ahead – the two boards are currently in negotiations – but he will definitely arrive after Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka concludes at the start of July.Ajmal is crucial to Worcestershire’s chances of survival in Division One of the County Championship. Last year he took 63 wickets at 16.47 in just nine matches – five of which Worcestershire won – to propel his adopted county to a most-unexpected promotion. Worcestershire did not lose in the Championship when Ajmal was in the side last season.”I’ve had this difficult spell of my career with my action but I knew I would come through it and have had the support not only of Pakistan but also Worcestershire throughout,” Ajmal said.”Worcestershire have all the time stood by me and I can assure them I will repay the faith they have shown in me this season. I would love to be with Worcestershire as long as possible so I can help the club achieve their high goals and also help establish them in Division One.”Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes added: “I’m delighted Saeed is coming back. He’s very important in what is hopefully going to be a successful season for us and is an important member of the dressing room.”He brings a lot of confidence to the team as well which is really important for this young group of players. He has made a tremendous impact. He is a real quality performer as all our members and supporters know.”Worcestershire are back in Division One of the County Championship after a two-year absence. They begin their new campaign at home to champions Yorkshire on April 12.

Jaffer suffers finger injury

Wasim Jaffer sustained a hairline fracture while fielding and may not feature in the second innings of Mumbai’s Ranji clash against Jammu & Kashmir at the Wankhede Stadium.
Jaffer hurt his right index finger while attempting a catch from centurion Shubham Khajuria in the slips, off Abhishek Nayar. Khajuria was on 104 then. Though the batsman was eventually dismissed, the regulation drop injured Jaffer’s finger, and is likely to take two weeks to heal.
However, with Mumbai in a precarious position with a lead of 48 in their second innings, Jaffer may try and give it a go with the bat. A decision will be made on the third morning.

In a dramatic collapse at the Wankhede Stadium, Jammu & Kashmir lost five wickets for just one run and squandered a strong position to restrict their first-innings lead to only 18 runs after they were all out for 254. However, they fought back by reducing Mumbai to 66 for 4 by the end of the second day, which means the hosts lead by 48 runs.J&K were cruising at 204 for 2 on the back of Shubham Khajuria’s maiden first-class hundred after they lost Bandeep Singh in the fourth over of the day. Khajuria struck 12 fours and three sixes but was run-out for 107 at the score of 204 and captain Parvez Rasool fell five runs later. However, the collapse came when J&K lost three wickets at the score of 253 and two at 254. Left-arm spinner Vishal Dabholkar took three of those – Samiullah Beigh and Waseem Raza in the same over for ducks – to finish with 3 for 30. Dhawal Kulkarni, Shardul Thakur and Iqbal Abdullah took two each. Ian Dev Singh, who came out at No. 4, resisted with a 70 but was one of the batsmen to fall at the score of 253.Mumbai would have liked to capitalise on the turnaround but medium-pacers Ram Dayal and Umar Nazir struck twice each within 23 runs. The new opening pair of Kevin Almeida put on 34 before Dayal broke the stand, and Aditya Tare and Shreyas Iyer were soon sent back for 1 each. Nazir pegged them back further by getting Almeida caught behind for 27. Suryakumar Yadav and Kulkarni played out 3.5 overs before stumps. Wasim Jaffer did not come out to bat because of an injury he sustained while fielding.
ScorecardFifties from Abhinav Mukund and R Prasanna guided Tamil Nadu to 240 for 5, within 50 runs of Karnataka’s first-innings score of 290.The visitors began the day at 22 for 0, but were dealt two early blows. S Aravind, bowling from around the wicket, had Kaushik Gandhi trapped lbw six overs into the day, although replays suggested the ball may have been going over. B Aparajith, coming in at No.2, pushed the first ball he faced past point for four, but did not last too long, as his lack of footwork resulted in him edging Vinay Kumar behind to CM Gautam, who was keeping with Mumbai Indians gloves.Tamil Nadu were struggling at 39 for 2, but Dinesh Karthik and Abhinav led a recovery with a third-wicket partnership worth 90. Mukund batted for nearly six hours, stroking nine fours to make 84, while Karthik’s 38 featured seven fours. Karthik’s innings, however, was far from flawless as he survived two close caught-behind decisions, before running out of luck the third time – replays indicated that HS Sharath’s delivery had only brushed Karthik’s pads on the way back to the keeper.Karnataka were without Vinay Kumar after lunch, but their spinner Shreyas Gopal made the breakthrough, dismissing B Indrajith in his first over. Prasanna, though, put up 40-plus stands for the fifth and sixth wickets with Abhinav and V Shankar to ensure that Tamil Nadu were in a promising position heading into the penultimate day. He remained unbeaten on 51, having muscled seven fours.
ScorecardAn unbeaten century by Arindam Ghosh and his 129-run seventh-wicket partnership with Avinash Yadav revived Railways from a delicate position and helped them take a first-innings lead at the Karnail Singh Stadium. In response to MP’s 181, Railways’ openers had added 54, but the run-out of Abhishek Kaushik triggered a collapse that saw the home team lose five more wickets for 44 runs, three of them to Puneet Datey. However, Ghosh and Yadav dropped anchor and led the slow build past MP’s score. Yadav scored 50 off 133 deliveries, his first half-century at the senior level, and was dismissed in the 81st over of the day. By that time, Railways were already ahead by 46 runs. Ghosh continued to build on his innings and was unbeaten on 113 that included 13 fours and one six when the day ended.
ScorecardSwapnil Singh marked his return to first-class cricket after three years with a five-for. It helped Baroda stage a collapse in the latter stages of Bengal’s first innings. Still, Sudip Chatterjee’s big hundred and late strikes by the visiting captain Laxmi Shukla meant Bengal clearly held an upper hand at the end of the second day’s play at the Reliance Stadium. To read the full report, click here.
