Profit Players: Idrissa Gueye was one of Ronald Koeman’s few right choices at Everton

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

As Paris Saint-Germain made the Champions League semi-finals after beating Atalanta on Wednesday, they were helped by one former Everton player.

The French side prevailed against the Serie A club following a dramatic end to the game – they were 1-0 down going into the 90th minute before goals from Marquinhos and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting completed an unlikely turnaround.

Idrissa Gueye was included in the PSG starting line-up in Lisbon, with the Senegal international making the switch to the Parc de Princes in July of last year for a fee of £29m following his impressive performances for the Toffees.

In 2016, Everton paid £7.1m to Aston Villa to take him to Goodison Park. The Villans were relegated to the Championship prior to the move but Gueye was one of the Midlands club’s standout performers as he managed an average WhoScored rating of 7.25 in the Premier League during the 2015/16 campaign.

Throughout his time with Everton, he was a consistent player – he averaged a rating of over seven in two of the three campaigns he had on Merseyside and would make 108 appearances in all competitions for the club. Not only that, he also averaged more than 3.5 tackles per match during his spell with the Toffees.

Ronald Koeman may have only managed one year with the Toffees before moving on, sacked with them in the relegation zone in October 2017 amid criticism of “bringing an air of negativity to Merseyside” (as per Goal.com), but the signing of Gueye was an inspired decision.

His move to PSG ensured that Everton made a profit of £22m – that is an increase of 314% on their original outlay, which reflects that the Toffees did tremendous transfer business where the 30-year-old is concerned.

Everton fans, do you reckon Gueye was Koeman’s best signing for the club? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Manchester United: Solskjaer has no intention of dropping David de Gea; may annoy Dean Henderson

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no intention of dropping David De Gea following his 400th game for Manchester United.

According to ESPN, De Gea’s place as first-choice goalkeeper has come under pressure in recent years, but Solskjaer insisted he has no plans of axing him anytime soon.

Once again, Solskjaer has decided to back the Spaniard, which could be bad news for the Red Devils as this may annoy Dean Henderson.

The Norwegian is not short of options between the sticks, as he can call upon the services of Sergio Romero, while Henderson has impressed on loan at Sheffield United.

De Gea, who is currently valued at £36m via Transfermarkt, has copped a fair amount of criticism following a dip in form, but Solskjaer has put his faith in the veteran, who signed a new long-term contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2024.

Although the Red Devils have offered Henderson a new deal, he has made it abundantly clear he is only prepared to sign on the dotted line if he is given the number one spot at the Theatre of Dreams.

The 23-year-old has spent the last few years on loan at Bramall Lane and has been an integral part of Chris Wilder’s side as the Blades have surged into European contention.

Henderson has played 33 games in the Premier League this season, keeping 13 clean sheets and only conceding 27 goals.

Despite his heroics in front of the posts, Solskjaer has given De Gea his support instead.

As it stands, Henderson is set to line up against Leicester when the Blades travel to the King Power Stadium on Thursday. He was tipped to wear the gloves for England before Euro 2020 was postponed due to these uncertain times.

However, Solskjaer’s decision might jeopardise his career at Old Trafford, as Chelsea are preparing to make a move for the keeper in the summer.

If United can’t give Henderson what he wants, he may decide to move elsewhere, as his future remains unclear.

The Red Devils will not want to let another youngster with bags of potential slip through their fingers, as ended up happening with Gerard Pique, who turned out to be a world-class defender at Barcelona.

United fans, do you think Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should give Dean Henderson a chance? Let us know down below!

– Tanto ele quanto o próprio Dudu (Cearense).

A conferir.

Liverpool: Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk could play against Crystal Palace

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could have both Mohamed Salah and Virgil Van Dijk available to feature against Crystal Palace, according to the Express.

Salah has been suffering with an ankle injury since playing Leicester in early October and hobbled off against Manchester City in the latter stages with a similar injury.

The Egyptian didn’t join up with his teammates on international duty as he attempted to rest his ankle ahead of a hectic winter fixture schedule for the European champions.

While his form has still been good, it’s an injury Salah has had to manage carefully, as he missed the clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford because of ankle problem.

Centre-back Virgil Van Dijk should be available for the clash at Selhurst Park, despite missing the Netherlands’ fixture against Estonia.

The Dutchman pulled out of the game for ‘personal reasons’ after playing the full 90 minutes against Northern Ireland, helping his nation to qualify for the 2020 European championships.

Klopp will hope to have two of his star players back in time for the trip to London, as between them they’ve missed just one Premier League game so far this season. Given their importance to the side at both ends of the pitch, having them available for what has proven to be a difficult trip in the past for title challengers (the Reds and Manchester City have lost there in recent years) is obviously a positive.

Elsewhere in the squad, Sadio Mane should be available despite being substituted at half time of Senegal’s latest fixture.

Despite initial fears of an injury, manager Aliou Cisse clarified that Mane was brought off to protect against him receiving a second yellow card.

Arsenal’s reported 12-man shortlist worryingly shows a lack of clear philosophy

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Daily Mirror, Arsenal have drawn up a new 12-man shortlist as they look to find a permanent successor to Unai Emery.

What’s the word?

The Gunners sacked the Spaniard last Friday after a series of poor results in recent weeks saw them slide down the Premier League table. At the time of Emery’s departure, the north London side had gone on a run of seven games without a win across all competitions.

Invincibles hero Freddie Ljungberg was immediately appointed as interim head coach, but The Daily Mirror now claim that the club wants to “move on quickly on a new manager”, and are ready to assess as many as 12 contenders for the role.

The report adds the likes of Brendan Rodgers, Mauricio Pochettino and Mikel Arteta are on the list, and that whilst Nuno Espirito Santo and Massimiliano Allegri also feature, they are not regarded as “leading candidates”. It is further suggested the Gunners intend to narrow down the shortlist by the end of the week to about four or five, with Edu, Raul Sanllehi, Vinai Venkatesham and Huss Fahmy making up the deciding panel.

Worrying signs

Whilst the sheer number of supposed candidates the Gunners are considering is not really an issue, the fact the managers all have their different philosophies and identities is. Take Allegri and Arteta for example. The former was a serial winner at Juventus and led the Bianconeri to two Champions League finals, whilst the latter has only been Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.

They are chalk and cheese in terms of their respective experiences, and yet for Arsenal to see them both as viable candidates, suggests they are making plans that don’t truly have a long-term vision in mind. They are simply looking at the best man for the job right now, rather than the best man for both the present and the future. The Gunners have already seen one post-Arsene Wenger appointment go wrong in Emery. They can ill-afford to do the same this time around.

Leeds may be missing Kemar Roofe as the stats show finishing woes

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…Â

What is missing from Leeds United this season?

It’s really tough to put your finger on it. The Whites are in a great place in the league, yet fans still have a number of complaints about the football that is being played at Elland Road.

The Yorkshire club are currently only one point worse off than they were at this point last term, and a comparison between this year and last year shows that they’re missing one man more than many would have anticipated.

Comparison

LUFC Data on Twitter has once again provided some fantastic statistical analysis of the club, and he compared how the team are getting on from this season compared to last.

As you can see, Leeds have a similar number of points as they did this time last year, but there are some very concerning stats within this tweet.

The one thing that should set alarm bells ringing in the heads of many United fans is their attacking stats.

Despite creating more chances than they did this time last year, the Whites have scored eight fewer goals, even though their xG is 9.4 higher.

What does this tell us? Leeds have somehow got worse at finishing despite being the worst finishers in the league last term, and that may be down to the absence of one man.

Missing Roofe

Leeds won’t like to hear it, but these stats heavily point towards the fact that they’re missing Kemar Roofe – someone Director of Football Victor Orta helped to shift on in August.

Roofe was their top scorer last term, and his departure has unsurprisingly seen the goals dry up due to the fact that he’s simply a better finisher than Bamford.

Find out what happened when a world-record-holding freestyler attempting skills with the worst pair of boots available on eBay in the video below…

The Anderlecht man scored 15 goals from 101 shots last term, while the former Boro striker has netted four goals from 45 attempts this campaign.

This means that their finishing rates stand at 14.85 per cent and 8.88% respectively.

While that doesn’t seem like a huge discrepancy it would equate to a difference of around eight goals if Bamford continues producing his current rate of 3.2 shots per game until the end of the season.

Of course, there are other factors at play than just Roofe’s absence, but losing their top scorer from last season certainly hasn’t helped Leeds’ efforts in front of goal.

Clearly the decision to sell him has been a mistake.

Will Grigg being given a new lease of life could kickstart his Sunderland career

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Will Grigg’s move to Sunderland has fallen short of expectations so far but his display against Tranmere on Tuesday shows he has the potential to be a real success this season.

The Northern Ireland international scored his first league goal of the season in the 5-0 rout but his all-round display hinted that a change in manager could see a different striker donning the red and white stripes from now on.

Phil Parkinson’s first home game in charge coincided with a change in approach from the Black Cats, moving away from a negative style of play which saw them draw 19 matches last term and find the back of the net just 16 times in 11 league games this campaign.

Watch League 1 Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The new lease of life led to more chances being created and it was no surprise that Grigg was able to profit, and now both his manager and the fans will hope he can keep it up, since the striker has previously drawn criticism for his performances.

However, he showed that could all be behind him now there is a new dawn at the Stadium of Light, adding quality to the tireless effort he showed throughout.

That commitment contributed to Grigg completing two tackles, allowing the Black Cats to pen in Rovers and apply pressure on their defence which made victory an inevitability, evidenced by their 16 shots.

According to SofaScore he also made four key passes, an aspect of his game which makes up for his lack of goals since arriving in January – with seven in 36 Sunderland appearances.

With such a record it is fair to say he has been a flop so far, particularly as he arrived for £4m – an eyewatering sum which makes him the most expensive League One signing ever.

Nevertheless, he still has a lot to offer and could be key to promotion success this year. He already had four of those under his belt from spells at Wigan, MK Dons and Brentford, and now he has a manager willing to be more adventurous and daring in attack, he could really flourish.

He finished as the top scorer in League One in 2015/16 too which shows he has the quality to be devastating at this level, suggesting it was perhaps a fault of Jack Ross that he failed to deliver.
