Spurs legend weighs in on Pochettino vs Conte debate - Exclusive

Graham Roberts believes that both Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte are winners as the duo are linked with the Tottenham Hotspur manager’s job.

Spurs sacked Jose Mourinho back in April and have yet to appoint a permanent replacement, with Ryan Mason taking charge for the end of the season.

Mourinho was hailed as a winner when he was appointed, but he ended his reign at Spurs without a trophy, although he did guide the club to the League Cup final. He was sacked the week prior to that fixture against Manchester City, with Mason overseeing a defeat at Wembley.

Spurs were heavily linked with a sensational swoop to bring Pochettino back to the club from PSG but Conte now appears to be the frontrunner, with reports suggesting that he is in talks with Spurs over the job.

Roberts believes that both managers are “winners”, and he has urged Spurs to back whomever is appointed with significant funds in the transfer market, learning from the mistakes of Pochettino’s first reign.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Roberts said: “But they’re all winners. Mourinho was a winner. It’s how you treat the players, I think Pochettino’s a winner, but he needed the ammunition, he needed the back-up, when he got to the League Cup final, semi-finals of the FA Cup, he needed an upgrade but we had no money because we were building a new stadium and playing at Wembley.

“And it was costing like 20 million pounds to play there. Now he’s got a stadium, the fans will be back, the club have to back him (the manager).”

United interested in Dion Sanderson

Having recently appointed Slavisa Jokanovic as the new Sheffield United manager, the Serbian will undoubtedly be looking to build a squad over the summer transfer window that is capable of securing the immediate return of Premier League football to Bramall Lane next season.

One potential incoming signing for the Blades could well be that of Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Dion Sanderson, with the Northern Echo reporting that the Premier League side may be willing to cash in on the 21-year-old this summer, with the club thought to be demanding a fee of around £2m in order to part with the defender.

United are believed to have held a long-term interest in Sanderson, something that even last season’s departure of Chris Wilder has not dampened, and considering the impressive form the youngster was in while on loan at Sunderland last season, it is not difficult to understand why.

Jokanovic must move

Indeed, over his 26 League One appearances while on loan with the Black Cats last term, the centre-back scored one goal and helped his side keep eight clean sheets, in addition to making 0.9 interceptions, one tackle, 2.7 clearances and winning 4.3 duels per game.

These metrics saw the £135k-rated man earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as Lee Johnson’s 13th-best performer in the league.

The defender also has Championship experience under his belt, having spent a spell on loan at Cardiff City towards the back end of the Bluebirds’ 2019/20 Championship campaign.

Over his 10 Championship appearances that season, Sanderson provided two assists and helped his side keep four clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.4 interceptions, 1.2 tackles, 2.1 clearances and winning 3.7 duels per fixture.

These returns saw the man Johnson dubbed a “Rolls Royce” defender earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.77, ranking him as Cardiff’s joint 14th-best player in the second tier.

However, what makes his level of performance over these loan spells all the more impressive is that Sanderson is still just 21 years of age, meaning that the Wolves U23 star still has much growing and developing left ahead of him in the professional game, something that would appear to bod extremely well for his future.

As such, with Jokanovic hoping to build a side that is not just capable of securing promotion next season, but also remaining in the top flight for years to come, the addition of a player with Sanderson’s obvious potential would appear to go a long way to helping the club achieve this feat.

Furthermore, for a fee of just £2m, a deal to sign the Wolves academy graduate would be an extremely affordable one to get over the line for a club of Sheffield United’s stature, further adding to the argument that Jokanvoic must do all he can to land the centre-back in the coming weeks.

West Ham fans rave as GSB eye Johnstone

According to a report by talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, West Ham United are leading the race to sign goalkeeper Sam Johnstone from West Bromwich Albion – prompting many Hammers fans to rave as GSB allegedly eye the possible ‘great signing’.

Johnstone, who has attracted praise for his performances this season, also earned his first ever England call up by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate recently.

The 28-year-old, as a result of his fine form, is in high demand – but Crook believes West Ham are the frontrunners for his signature.

David Moyes is apparently on the look out for an eventual heir to current number one Lukasz Fabianski, with the Poland international recently putting pen to paper on a new deal.

The Evening Standard report that Johnstone could even cost as little as £10 million, especially considering WBA’s relegation.

Now that West Ham are in pole position to sign the shot-stopping ace, many Irons supporters have raved over the news on social media – with one calling the Englishman a potentially ‘great signing’.

Villa getting rid of Smith would be harsh

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that it would be harsh for his old side to ditch Dean Smith and hire Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Earlier this week, it was revealed by Football Insider that super-agent Jorge Mendes, who represents Nuno, is looking to move his client to another club with more financial resources like Aston Villa.

Smith has done a great job at Villa since taking over back in 2018, guiding the Villans to the Premier League and helping them to retain their status there. Considering that, Hendrie believes it would be a brutal move to push him aside for Nuno.

Speaking exclusively to FFC on the subject, the ex-Villa player said:

“I feel that it would be a bit harsh if Dean was pushed aside to let in Nuno at this current stage because I feel that Villa have built from last season.

“They have been a little inconsistent, but I do feel that if we can bring in two or three or four players next season, why can’t we be a force next season and push for Europe? I do feel Dean can do that.

“He’s got a good understanding of the players, he’s got a good bond, so if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.”

Smith has done nothing to warrant a dismissal. Looking at the Premier League table, Villa are sitting pretty after being brought back to English football’s top flight by the 50-year-old in the first place.

Newcastle eye Guessand transfer

Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a summer transfer for French striker Evann Guessand.

The Lowdown: Guessand impressing

Guessand is a player who has only really burst onto the scene this season, scoring seven goals and making a further five assists in 32 games in total for FC Lausanne-Sport in the Swiss Super League so far in the 2020/21 term (Transfermarkt).

He is only on loan and so will return to Ligue 1 team Nice at the end of the campaign, with a few clubs likely to be keeping an eye on his development.

The Latest: Newcastle interested

As per the Northern Echo, the St. James’ Park faithful are interested in bringing Guessand to the North East.

With the Toon in need of some reliable cover for Callum Wilson up top, the 19-year-old may relish the opportunity to play in the Premier League.

The Verdict: Guessand worth the gamble

It would certainly be a gamble bringing in a player who is relatively unknown having only really now come under the spotlight.

However, the transfer could have shades of the one the Magpies did to bring Allan Saint-Maximin to Tyneside.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-2/” title=”Newcastle updates! (2)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The winger was signed from Nice, the same club that Guessand will return to once his loan ends, and was certainly not as known when he arrived at the Toon from French football, before developing into a star for Steve Bruce’s side.

Although Guessand is primarily a striker by trade, the six-foot-one starlet has also played on the left-wing as well this season, a position occupied by Saint-Maximin himself.

Saint-Maximin was a gamble that has certainly payed off, and Guessand could well turn out to be the same.

Klopp must bench Thiago vs Madrid

Liverpool have a huge job on their hands to reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals against Real Madrid.

The Reds find themselves 3-1 behind heading into the second-leg and need all the help they can get in order to stage another dramatic Anfield recovery.

However, one man that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp should not turn to is midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

The Spaniard’s dreadful start to life on Merseyside has certainly been well-documented. He has not racked up a single goal or assist throughout the 2020/21 campaign following his move from Bayern Munich, whilst he has started less than half of the Reds’ Premier League games.

In fact, he has been underwhelming in Europe too, averaging fewer key passes in the Champions League than Naby Keita, whilst having fewer shots per game in the competition than the likes of James Milner and Curtis Jones, according to WhoScored.

It is certainly not the impact that Klopp, nor the £31.5m-rated midfielder, will have wanted to make on Merseyside.

There are more reasons as to why he should be benched against Real Madrid though.

Throughout his career with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Thiago has taken to the pitch against Los Blancos 12 times in all competitions.

In that time, he has been part of just one winning side – that solitary victory coming all the way back in the 2011/12 edition of the Copa del Rey with Barcelona. However, he was on the pitch for just four minutes.

Having lost seven career games against Real, it means that Thiago has not lost more matches against a single opponent throughout his career.

The Spaniard’s personal impact against the Spanish giants has also been minimal. In the matches he has faced them, he has notched two assists, whilst picking up three bookings.

Whilst it would certainly be harsh to drop a player based on his past experience against a team, that coupled with his horrendous recent form should be enough reason for Klopp to drop Thiago to the bench for Wednesday evening’s game.

Pundit expects West Ham to keep Soucek

Frank McAvennie has exclusively told Football FanCast that he doesn’t expect West Ham to have any problems keeping Tomas Soucek this summer.

Soucek only made his loan move permanent from Slavia Prague last summer, but is enjoying an outstanding campaign at the London Stadium, leading to former Tottenham man Jamie O’Hara hinting at a potential summer exit for the Czech Republic international.

The midfielder has been in outstanding goalscoring form for the Hammers this term, netting nine Premier League goals, including strikes against Manchester United, Everton and the third in the draw with Arsenal earlier this month.

Soucek continued his purple patch by netting a hat-trick in Czech Republic’s 6-2 victory over Estonia in their World Cup qualifier last Wednesday, taking his tally for the season to 13 for club and country.

Despite his outstanding goalscoring exploits, ex-Hammers striker McAvennie doesn’t see any reason why Soucek would consider a move away from east London this summer, although he believes his performances have warranted a new contract.

He told Football FanCast: “He’s bought into David Moyes. I think he needs a new contract. West Ham can pay the big bucks, but they’re not going to do it at the beginning.

“So Mr Sullivan paid him bottom drawer, not bottom drawer to us, bottom drawer is about 40 or 50 grand, but I think he’s worth more than that.

“But I don’t see a problem. People love London and West Ham are a decent club, I loved them. The fans love Soucek. If you give him the money he deserves, I don’t where he would go. Where he is going to go where you’re going to get a game all the time and be loved.

“He’s Lampard-like – a midfielder player that scores goes. He’s enjoying it, why would he want to move? He’ll get the wages, and be on par with everyone else and be happy.”
