Villa getting rid of Smith would be harsh

Former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that it would be harsh for his old side to ditch Dean Smith and hire Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Earlier this week, it was revealed by Football Insider that super-agent Jorge Mendes, who represents Nuno, is looking to move his client to another club with more financial resources like Aston Villa.

Smith has done a great job at Villa since taking over back in 2018, guiding the Villans to the Premier League and helping them to retain their status there. Considering that, Hendrie believes it would be a brutal move to push him aside for Nuno.

Speaking exclusively to FFC on the subject, the ex-Villa player said:

“I feel that it would be a bit harsh if Dean was pushed aside to let in Nuno at this current stage because I feel that Villa have built from last season.

“They have been a little inconsistent, but I do feel that if we can bring in two or three or four players next season, why can’t we be a force next season and push for Europe? I do feel Dean can do that.

“He’s got a good understanding of the players, he’s got a good bond, so if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.”

Smith has done nothing to warrant a dismissal. Looking at the Premier League table, Villa are sitting pretty after being brought back to English football’s top flight by the 50-year-old in the first place.

Newcastle eye Guessand transfer

Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a summer transfer for French striker Evann Guessand.

The Lowdown: Guessand impressing

Guessand is a player who has only really burst onto the scene this season, scoring seven goals and making a further five assists in 32 games in total for FC Lausanne-Sport in the Swiss Super League so far in the 2020/21 term (Transfermarkt).

He is only on loan and so will return to Ligue 1 team Nice at the end of the campaign, with a few clubs likely to be keeping an eye on his development.

The Latest: Newcastle interested

As per the Northern Echo, the St. James’ Park faithful are interested in bringing Guessand to the North East.

With the Toon in need of some reliable cover for Callum Wilson up top, the 19-year-old may relish the opportunity to play in the Premier League.

The Verdict: Guessand worth the gamble

It would certainly be a gamble bringing in a player who is relatively unknown having only really now come under the spotlight.

However, the transfer could have shades of the one the Magpies did to bring Allan Saint-Maximin to Tyneside.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-2/” title=”Newcastle updates! (2)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The winger was signed from Nice, the same club that Guessand will return to once his loan ends, and was certainly not as known when he arrived at the Toon from French football, before developing into a star for Steve Bruce’s side.

Although Guessand is primarily a striker by trade, the six-foot-one starlet has also played on the left-wing as well this season, a position occupied by Saint-Maximin himself.

Saint-Maximin was a gamble that has certainly payed off, and Guessand could well turn out to be the same.

Klopp must bench Thiago vs Madrid

Liverpool have a huge job on their hands to reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals against Real Madrid.

The Reds find themselves 3-1 behind heading into the second-leg and need all the help they can get in order to stage another dramatic Anfield recovery.

However, one man that Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp should not turn to is midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

The Spaniard’s dreadful start to life on Merseyside has certainly been well-documented. He has not racked up a single goal or assist throughout the 2020/21 campaign following his move from Bayern Munich, whilst he has started less than half of the Reds’ Premier League games.

In fact, he has been underwhelming in Europe too, averaging fewer key passes in the Champions League than Naby Keita, whilst having fewer shots per game in the competition than the likes of James Milner and Curtis Jones, according to WhoScored.

It is certainly not the impact that Klopp, nor the £31.5m-rated midfielder, will have wanted to make on Merseyside.

There are more reasons as to why he should be benched against Real Madrid though.

Throughout his career with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Thiago has taken to the pitch against Los Blancos 12 times in all competitions.

In that time, he has been part of just one winning side – that solitary victory coming all the way back in the 2011/12 edition of the Copa del Rey with Barcelona. However, he was on the pitch for just four minutes.

Having lost seven career games against Real, it means that Thiago has not lost more matches against a single opponent throughout his career.

The Spaniard’s personal impact against the Spanish giants has also been minimal. In the matches he has faced them, he has notched two assists, whilst picking up three bookings.

Whilst it would certainly be harsh to drop a player based on his past experience against a team, that coupled with his horrendous recent form should be enough reason for Klopp to drop Thiago to the bench for Wednesday evening’s game.

Pundit expects West Ham to keep Soucek

Frank McAvennie has exclusively told Football FanCast that he doesn’t expect West Ham to have any problems keeping Tomas Soucek this summer.

Soucek only made his loan move permanent from Slavia Prague last summer, but is enjoying an outstanding campaign at the London Stadium, leading to former Tottenham man Jamie O’Hara hinting at a potential summer exit for the Czech Republic international.

The midfielder has been in outstanding goalscoring form for the Hammers this term, netting nine Premier League goals, including strikes against Manchester United, Everton and the third in the draw with Arsenal earlier this month.

Soucek continued his purple patch by netting a hat-trick in Czech Republic’s 6-2 victory over Estonia in their World Cup qualifier last Wednesday, taking his tally for the season to 13 for club and country.

Despite his outstanding goalscoring exploits, ex-Hammers striker McAvennie doesn’t see any reason why Soucek would consider a move away from east London this summer, although he believes his performances have warranted a new contract.

He told Football FanCast: “He’s bought into David Moyes. I think he needs a new contract. West Ham can pay the big bucks, but they’re not going to do it at the beginning.

“So Mr Sullivan paid him bottom drawer, not bottom drawer to us, bottom drawer is about 40 or 50 grand, but I think he’s worth more than that.

“But I don’t see a problem. People love London and West Ham are a decent club, I loved them. The fans love Soucek. If you give him the money he deserves, I don’t where he would go. Where he is going to go where you’re going to get a game all the time and be loved.

“He’s Lampard-like – a midfielder player that scores goes. He’s enjoying it, why would he want to move? He’ll get the wages, and be on par with everyone else and be happy.”

Valencia to sell West Ham target Guedes

David Sullivan should fund a move for West Ham United to sign Goncalo Guedes in the summer transfer window as Valencia reportedly look to sell the Portuguese forward.

What’s the word?

According to AS, Valencia’s dire financial outlook has seen the La Liga giants slap a for-sale sign on Guedes and teammate Maxi Gomez.

The Mestalla Stadium natives are willing to listen to offers for the pair as they look to drum up vital funds, with owner Peter Lim facing losses of €26.5m (£23m) and challenges to meet Spain’s Financial Fair Play limit.

Reports in Spain last month had touted West Ham as a potential destination for Guedes, with David Moyes said to have an eye on the 24-year-old’s uncertain outlook.

A deal to sign Valencia’s record signing, for whom they paid Paris Saint-Germain £36m in 2018, was claimed to be possible for just €15m (£13m), sparking interest from the Irons as well as Napoli and AS Monaco.

West Ham could look to couple the Portuguese’s arrival with a revived pursuit of Gomez, with AS adding that Valencia are open to selling the striker for €18m (£15.5m) just two years on from the Hammers reportedly agreeing to pay Celta Viga €50m (£44.5m).

Gomez has scored 15 goals in 67 games across all competitions since rejecting West Ham’s interest for a move to Valencia, while offering eight assists.

Guedes has 20 goals and 20 assists in 126 games for Valencia, including during his initial season on loan, but has only started 17 of a possible 28 La Liga fixtures this term.

Should West Ham sign Valencia’s Guedes?

West Ham looking to capitalise on Valencia’s dire financial outlook and raiding the Mestalla for Guedes could see Sullivan fund a move for a forward who Javi Gracia lauded as “decisive” and may only need a fresh start to rediscover the form which saw PSG demand £36m.

Guedes lit up La Liga in the 2017/18 campaign during his year on loan with five goals and 11 assists, but abductor and groin issues arose in the following season to kick off his decline and 14 games out with a sprained ankle last term ensured it continued.

This year has been a massive challenge for Valencia as a whole, with Gracia overseeing just eight wins in 28 top-flight games, to sit closer to the relegation zone than Los Murcielagos are to the European places.

Given their struggles, it is no wonder that Guedes has also lost his form, but a fresh start could see that talent return, similar to how West Ham have benefitted from Jesse Lingard since his arrival on loan from Manchester United.

Lingard had not featured in the Premier League this season before moving to the London Stadium in the winter market, but has five goals and three assists to his name from seven appearances in claret and blue.

It’s the 28-year-old’s best return in front of the goal since the 2017/18 campaign, when he registered a career-best eight goals and six assists, but it took 33 games and three times as many minutes as he has played this season for Lingard to reach that tally.

Moyes had the key to unlock Lingard’s best form of his Premier League career, and may have the ability to unlock Guedes’ maximum potential as well.

AND in other news, West Ham are adamant a deal to sign a £100k-p/w “revelation” will be reached

Gers fans rage after Gerrard comments

Glasgow Rangers fans have slammed referee John Beaton after comments from Steven Gerrard following the Gers’ 1-0 victory over Livingston on Wednesday.

The Gers picked up another three points as they close in on the Premiership title. However, Gerrard was unable to watch the second-half from the touchline after being sent off at half-time by Beaton. The former Liverpool captain was clearly frustrated after Alfredo Morelos was booked for diving despite contact being made. He confronted the official at the interval, and received two yellow cards within the space of a minute.

After the final whistle, Gerrard was clearly still irritated. In his post-match interview, he said the decision to punish Morelos was ‘bang out of order’. Gerrard claimed he would accept one official making a mistake, but was furious that a referee, assistant referee and fourth official had all got it wrong.

The comments were shared by Clyde Superscoreboard on Twitter, and they attracted plenty of attention from the Gers supporters.

They took to the social media platform to share their anger.

Let’s see what the fans had to say after the comments from Gerrard

Christie axed, Lennon makes 4 changes: Predicted Celtic XI vs Motherwell - opinion

Is this the beginning of Celtic’s turnaround? Their 4-0 win over Kilmarnock brought back happy memories of some of the free-flowing football we’ve seen over the last decade.

On each of the last nine occasions, the Hoops have been the triumphant side when it comes to the SPFL.

Their success has been unmatched but now they’re on the verge of surrendering their grasp over Scottish football.

Heading into their clash with Motherwell on Saturday, they are still 23 points behind Rangers. It’s safe to say that any chance of securing a tenth successive crown is done and dusted.

It’s rather remarkable that Neil Lennon is still in the job and we’re not expecting him to lose it anytime soon. After all, the hierarchy have backed him to the hills.

Thus, in Lennon’s next clash, what will his starting XI be?

We’re tipping the manager to make as many as four changes from the team that defeated Kilmarnock on Tuesday.

One of those changes is enforced. Albian Ajeti scored against Killie but is now facing a two-match suspension after being retrospectively banned for simulation.

He went down to earn a penalty that Odsonne Edouard converted but is now facing punishment for his actions. That means that Leigh Griffiths returns to the side.

Another change is at left-back where Diego Laxalt comes into replace Greg Taylor. That’s the only replacement among a backline that kept a rare clean sheet a few days ago.

The other two switches come in the middle of the park. Scott Brown was imperious in the win over Killie but is dropped back to the bench in place of the effervescent Ismaila Soro.

We’ve downplayed Ryan Christie’s performances this week and as such, we think the out of form winger needs to be benched. He’s scored just once in his last 19 outings so Mo Elyounoussi takes his place in the side.

That means that David Turnbull is moved over to the right-hand side in the hope of finding good fortune against his former employers.

AND in other news, Celtic could fix a big problem by hiring manager who left Rodgers “really impressed”…
