ICC inquiry stands by result of crowd-marred Nepal game

Cricinfo staff11-May-2010The ICC has published its report on the investigations into the incidents that marred the finish of the World Cricket Division League Five game between Nepal and USA in Kirtipur. It has found no evidence to support Singapore Cricket Association’s (SCA’s) claim that Nepal had earned a back-door entry into Division Four following a crowd disturbance, due to the technical committee’s revised target that helped them edge ahead of Singapore on net run-rate.The match was disrupted in the closing stages by the unruly home crowd, with USA set for a facile win that would have brought Nepal below Singapore in the league standings. As it transpired, the 45-minute delay caused by the crowd disturbance meant the target was revised significantly enough to lift Nepal’s net run-rate above Singapore’s by a slender margin, giving the home side a fortuitous entry into Division Four. The SCA demanded that ICC looked into the issue, specifically the decision of the technical committee that revised USA’s target from 163 off 50 overs, to 157 off 46.The inquiry, conducted by top ICC officials Dave Richardson, David Becker and Ravi Sawani, ruled against SCA’s claims today. However, it made recommendations that the proposed mandatory safety standards being introduced by the ICC security task force considers including sanctions against the home board when the home crowd interrupts a match, particularly when it benefits the home team. The investigation covered all aspects of the controversy including the net run-rate calculations, the reactions of the match officials and the nature of the security-related issues which arose during the match.Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, thanked the inquiry panel for their investigations and expressed his sympathy for Singapore, but said that promoting them retrospectively would set a bad precedent. “I am grateful to the inquiry panel for the thorough investigation conducted and it is reassuring to note that the correct processes and playing rules were applied by the event technical committee and match officials.”It is a most unfortunate outcome for Singapore and there was a suggestion that they should be promoted alongside USA and Nepal. While everyone agrees that this was a regrettable incident and one which we do not want to see repeated, there is no justifiable basis to promote Singapore and such temptation would create a dangerous precedent to the integrity of competition and the playing regulations,” Lorgat said. The Cricket Association of Nepal has already accepted a directive to not host further international cricket at the venue until remedial measures were carried out, including the reconstruction of the boundary wall that was damaged by stone-throwers looking for projectiles to hurl into the ground.

Leeds eye new attacking midfielder

Leeds United are among the teams interested in Manuel Lanzini ahead of the January transfer window…

What’s the word?

That’s according to TEAMtalk, who claim the Yorkshire giants have submitted an enquiry to West Ham over the 28-year-old attacking midfielder, though the Irons have rebuffed such advances.

Premier League rivals Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Southampton and Everton are also said to be keen.

It remains to be seen how much the Argentinian would command next month, having cost the east London outfit just £9m from UAE Pro League side Al Jazira back in March 2016.

He is thought to be on around £70k-per-week at the London Stadium.

Creative solution

Although the Hammers are rejected the idea of letting Lanzini leave this winter, it would be hard to imagine them rejecting a substantial bid for his signature considering he has slipped down the pecking order this season.

Both Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma are often preferred to him, whilst Irons boss David Moyes made a €39m (£33m) investment in Nikola Vlasic in the summer.

The 28-year-old’s vast experience in the top-flight would make him an interesting candidate for this struggling Leeds side – one that could ultimately do with some creativity in the final third.

Only five teams have scored fewer goals than the Whites from 18 league matches this season, two of which sit in the relegation zone. 44% of these goals have come from set pieces and they are amongst the four worst teams when it comes to scoring from open play, per WhoScored.

Lanzini, who has never really been a regular figure at West Ham, has still proven to be a playmaking influence, having averaged 1.7 key passes per 90 throughout his time in east London.

If he were to perform to that level at Elland Road right now, then only two players would rank ahead of him, one being the wing threat of Raphinha.

“In training, being around this player all the time, he’s brilliant, he’s amazing. I’ve never seen a player like him,” once claimed former teammate Jordan Hugill. “The things he can do with a football, it’s incredible just to watch him and in training, it’s even better.”

Ex-manager Slaven Bilic even likened him to Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric, whilst Darren Bent dubbed him a “top player” with “wonderful feet” to Football Insider just last year.

On the above evidence, Bielsa signing his fellow countryman could be quite a shrewd move, whether it can definitely happen or not remains to be seen but United would be foolish to not try again next month.

Leeds backed to make move for Dele Alli

Leeds United should ‘seriously consider’ making a January move for Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Alli’s fall from grace

Alli was one of the hottest properties in English football at one point, scoring 18 Premier League goals in the 2016/17 season when he was only just out of his teens.

He has been hailed as ‘fantastic’ by former Arsenal hero Ian Wright but his stock has fallen rapidly of late, with only six league starts coming his way this season and none since the arrival of Antonio Conte.

It means a January exit could potentially be on the cards, and Leeds are desperately in need of a new midfielder, with Phil Hay believing the plan is to go shopping for one in January after the injury to Kalvin Phillips.

The Latest: Leeds backed to sign Spurs man

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke claimed Alli is an option Victor Orta and co would have to weigh up if the opportunity arrived to sign him:

“Not to rule out Leeds, either. I think if Dele Alli was there and he wanted to go to Leeds, it’s something they would have to seriously consider.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-28/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Worth a gamble?

Alli’s reputation has undoubtedly diminished over time but he is such a talented footballer and he may just require a fresh challenge.

He is still a player with 37 England caps to his name, not to mention scoring 51 goals and registering 37 assists in 179 Premier League appearances.

Granted, he wouldn’t be a signing to accommodate the loss of Phillips to injury, given his attack-minded nature, but Marcelo Bielsa may believe he could get the best out of him, and he would certainly add quality depth to a side whose injury concerns are becoming a full-blown crisis.

Robertson steals the show at Goodison Park

Liverpool comfortably beat Everton 4-1 on Wednesday night in what was the host’s heaviest defeat at Goodison Park in the Merseyside derby for 39 years.

Rafa Benitez’s side failed to control the attacking force of Liverpool from the very start, with both Jordan Henderson and Mo Salah scoring within the first 19 minutes of the game.

Everton did get back in the game at one point, with Demarai Gray trying to salvage the scoreline making it 2-1 in the 38th minute, but it wasn’t to be for the Toffees, with both Salah and Diogo Jota scoring in the second half to kill the game.

The clash was full of aggressive play and physicality from both sides, as a result the Merseyside rivals collected seven yellow cards and committed 24 fouls combined, which was one of the most expected attributes of the encounter.

Something that maybe wasn’t expected, was the amount of goals Liverpool were able to put past their enemy, something that hasn’t been seen at Goodison Park in a derby for nearly four decades, this result is relatively unheard of in this fixtures with most clashes recently being closer calls between the pair.

Benitez will be feeling deflated this evening after a performance that lacked confidence and discipline throughout. His side endured their fourth defeat in five, and Everton fans were even seen leaving the stadium after Salah’s 19-minute goal, which will be tough to take for the manager and the club.

Liverpool dominated possession holding 70% of the ball overall, with seven shots on target compared to Everton’s two, the statistics are an accurate reflection of the overwhelming control Liverpool maintained throughout the game.

Although Salah took the spotlight with two magnificent goals, there was one unsung hero for Liverpool that cannot go under the radar.

Andy Robertson was absolutely crucial to the way the match opened up and the way it finished too, assisting Henderson’s 9th-minute opener and Jota’s 79th-minute killer strike, to seal a fantastic win for the Reds.

The £58.5m-rated left-back looked confident in his position, both going forward and defensively, getting stuck in at every opportunity. As per SofaScore, Robertson completed five tackles and three key passes, further adding to his impressive involvement in every aspect of the game whether that was creating goal-scoring opportunities or taking on defensive challenges.

Robertson has been criticised for a dip in form recently, with some calling for Konstantinos Tsimikas to start ahead of the Scottish defender in defence.

He will surely have silenced any critic last night, as he pulled the strings in build-up play, displayed complete selflessness and commitment to the team and read the game perfectly as he navigated from deep to assist two of the four goals, proving exactly why he is Klopp’s first choice.

New Zealand crumble to Sri Lankan pace

Scorecard andball-by-ball details
How they were out
Thilan Samaraweera’s 104 was a huge improvement over his previous highest ODI score of 38•AFP

A batting masterpiece and a fast-bowling barrage. It isn’t often that a teamcan combine both of those forces in one night, but Sri Lanka had all of that, and more, going for them. Thilan Samaraweera compileda superlative maiden one-day century and Lasith Malinga ripped NewZealand’s middle order to shreds as the hosts launched the series with athumping win, bonus point included. When Sri Lanka were restricted to 216, it seemed a tight contest was on the cards;instead New Zealand folded for 119, sending the smattering of spectatorshome early. Sri Lanka’s innings had been resurrected from 69 for 5 bySamaraweera and AngeloMathews, but New Zealand never recovered after Sri Lanka’s fast bowlerssliced through the order.Within 29 balls, Jesse Ryder (0), Martin Guptill (3) and Ross Taylor (2)were left brooding in the dressing room. New Zealand’s shot at victory hadbeen squashed and any self-belief that lingered after the Tests nowvanished. And Sri Lanka weren’t done. Malinga is hardly the man you want to see with the ball when your top order has been blown away, and what followed was stunning. With his first threeovers, comprising deliveries on all sorts of lengths, Malinga kept thebatsmen tied down. The fourth was something out of a shooting gallery.Brendon McCullum had run the risk of being arrested for loitering as hesqueezed 14 from 51 balls before Malinga rattled his stumps. Two deliverieslater Malinga held back his length and drew an edge off Jacob Oram’s bat toKumar Sangakkara. With his next ball, Malinga hurled down a corker that wentright through debutant Nathan McCullum. At 41 for 6 in the 19th over, this game was as good as done. The onlybatsmen to cross 14 were Grant Elliott, with a brave 41, and Ian Butler, whose efforts lessened the margin of defeat. Completing the rout withanother yorker was Malinga, whose aggressive bowling had undoubtedly beenfuelled by Samaraweera’s inspirational batting.Samaraweera, whose highest ODI score coming into this match was 38 not out, teamed up with Mathews and averted a meek surrender with a 127-runassociation from 134 balls. The pair combined exceptional running betweenthe wickets with some fireworks to help Sri Lanka reach a total that lookedremote when they began.Conventional wisdom and statistics at the Premadasa suggest strongly youbat first in day-night matches, and when Sangakkara won the toss it wasgreeted with loud cheers as the crowd anticipated a quick start. But thiswas an unusual two-paced track that didn’t encourage for blazing shots andSri Lanka slipped to 22 for 3.Tuffey’s reputation as a first-over specialist preceded him on hisinternational return, and it was a special wicket to celebrate too, asTillakarate Dilshan chopped on. Bond dismissed Mahela Jayawardene for 0,steering a rising delivery to slip, and Sanath Jayasuriya for 7, slashing tothird man. Vettori eased Bond back into this format with five tight overs (2for 9) and Tuffey’s consummate spell of 1 for 19 off six overs made for aclinical start with the ball. Tuffey and Bond bowled very straight andshackled the Sri Lankan top order, and the fielders were energetic andpredatory as well. There were only two boundaries by the half-way mark – both inside the firstthree overs – and a run rate of 2.72 indicated how much Sri Lanka hadstruggled. Almost immediately, Samaraweera and Mathews began to build somemomentum, unfazed by the nature of the track and energetically hunting forscoring possibilities. A boundaryless streak, lasting 143 deliveries, wassoon snapped.Mathews played his most fluent innings in recent memory. He timed the ballwell from the start, getting off the mark with a straight drive off DanielVettori, and then placed the ball far more deftly than he had in theTwenty20s. Between overs 33 and 38 the pair added 35, running hard betweenthe wickets and taking runs off Butler, prompting Vettori to call backTuffey. Samaraweera, who had reached his half-century off 78 balls, cleanlylofted and paddled boundaries to get the small crowd cheering. In the first over of the batting Powerplay, taken after 44 overs,Samaraweera turned it on: he brought up the century stand in 114 balls witha spanking cover drive off Butler, repeated the shot a touch squarer, andpaddled four more past short fine leg. Bond returned to bowl Mathews for 51,but Samaraweera achieved his watershed landmark. It was exceptional battingand got Sri Lanka to a total far beyond what New Zealand would have liked.Vettori now has a few days to raise his players’ morale. It will bedifficult after such a comprehensive defeat, especially against India. NewZealand’s next game – and potentially last – game is on Friday. They can, atbest, hope to look forward to a new pitch.

Conte makes eye-watering Spurs demand

As per Calciomercato.it, new Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has already made an eye-watering demand as he also eyes six ‘big name’ Serie A stars.

The Lowdown: Conte era begins…

As now officially confirmed, Spurs have commenced yet another new managerial era for the second time in the space of a few months after the premature sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo.

Indeed, serial winner Conte has now taken to the helm after managing director Fabio Paratici originally failed to land him in the summer.

The transfer chief has now managed to convince Conte to sign with the north London club as the 52-year-old puts pen to paper on an 18-month initial deal with the option to extend further (The Evening Standard).

Paratici, delighted to appoint his compatriot with ‘vast experience and trophies’, may also have to take into account Conte’s transfer wish list if the Italians are to transform Spurs into a Premier League and European force once again.

Reports from Italy indicate that the former Chelsea boss has already set his sights on numerous targets to strengthen the Lilywhites and Calciomercato.it in particular have now lifted the lid on an eye-watering budget demand.

The Latest: Conte makes £237m demand as he eyes six stars, including Chiesa…

According to their sources, the four-time Serie A winner is eyeing six ‘big name’ players from the division in Matthijs de Ligt, Stefan de Vrij, Marcelo Brozovic, Alessio Romagnoli, Dusan Vlahovic and, now, even Juventus superstar Federico Chiesa.

The latter man stands out as a very interesting name to become linked with Spurs considering he is deemed ‘untouchable’ by The Old Lady and valued at around €80-90 million (£68m-£76.5m).

As well as this, Conte has apparently already requested a €280m (£237m) transfer kitty at Spurs as he eyes a major overhaul.

The Verdict: Summary of ambition…

The ex-Juve coach’s eye-watering nine-figure Spurs transfer demand, not to mention the fact he is now keeping tabs on Euro 2020 star Chiesa, is perhaps the summary of why Paratici had to hire him as Lilywhites supporters yearn for ambition to return to their club.

While it remains to be seen whether he will be granted such extravagant resources, potentially signing Chiesa alone would come as a real statement of intent by both Conte and Spurs.

Lauded as a ‘huge player’ by Rio Ferdinand (BT Sport via The Daily Mail), with his exploits at the Euros under Roberto Mancini coming as a fine example of this, his attacking versatility is also a stand-out reason to attempt a swoop.

Indeed, Chiesa can play on the wing and further forward as a second striker – with Joe Cole even drawing comparisons with former Liverpool star Luis Suarez for his ‘hustling and bustling’ (BT Sport via The Daily Mail).

Signing the 24-year-old and the addition of a £237m transfer war chest are certainly tall orders by Conte but they exemplify his character and where he aims to take the club.
