Gayle in Jamaica squad for Regional Super50

Chris Gayle, the former West Indies captain, has been named in the Jamaica squad for the Regional Super50 competition in the Caribbean

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Oct-2011Chris Gayle, the former West Indies captain, has been named in the Jamaica squad for the Regional Super50 competition in the Caribbean.Gayle and the WICB have been at loggerheads for a good part of this year. He hasn’t played for West Indies since the end of the 2011 World Cup. He participated in the IPL that followed the World Cup, after being left out of a training camp ahead of the home series against Pakistan. In a hard-hitting interview with KLAS Sports, he had questioned his treatment by members of the board, including chief executive Ernest Hilaire, and the coach Ottis Gibson, after he had picked up an injury during the World Cup.He was subsequently involved in negotiations with the board but the dispute is yet to be resolved. As a result, he was also left out of the West Indies squad for the tour of Bangladesh. It is still unclear as to whether Gayle will lead the Jamaica side. The appointment of a captain, reportedly, needs to be ratified by the WICB. Jamaica will not have the services of batsman Marlon Samuels and wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh, who will be away on national duty.”This is a balanced team when you look at it. We took into consideration the venue in Guyana and the state of the pitches,” Junior Bennett, the Jamaica coach, was quoted as saying in the .Allrounder Andre Russell and Danza Hyatt are expected to join the Jamaica squad after finishing the limited-overs leg of the Bangladesh tour. The tournament will begin in Guyana on October 19.Jamaica squad: Chris Gayle, Shawn Findlay, Tamar Lambert, Chadwick Walton, Nikita Miller, Yannick Elliott, Odean Brown, Andrew Richardson, Jerome Taylor, Krishmar Santokie, Xavier Marshall, Simon Jackson, Jermaine Blackwood, Kenar Lewis.

Aston Villa: Konsa to miss start of 2022/23

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa is set to miss the opening weeks of the 2022/23 Premier League season after sustaining a knee injury last weekend against Crystal Palace that will keep the Englishman sidelined for 12-16 weeks.

What’s the latest?

As tweeted by Birmingham Live’s Ashley Preece following Steven Gerrard’s pre-Burnley press conference, the 24-year-old has sustained a “serious” knee injury and will miss all of pre-season as well as the opening stages of the next Premier League campaign.

The Villa boss stated: “We’re quite relieved because we thought we were dealing with an ACL” whilst also revealing that Emi Martinez picked up an injury in training and Robin Olsen could be set for his Villa debut in between the sticks.

The Villans have just two matches left this campaign, this evening’s home clash with the Clarets before a trip to Manchester City on Sunday.

However, the injury has come at an awful time for Konsa who will have to work extra hard to catch up for when the new season comes around given him missing out on pre-season training.

Bad news

Although the West Midlands outfit have been frustratingly inconsistent at times this season, Konsa has had a decent campaign this term.

The Englishman has won 64% of his duels in the Premier League whilst averaging 0.5 interceptions, 0.9 tackles and 2.8 clearances a match in 29 top-flight appearances.

However, the injury could trigger long-term issues for Konsa’s Villa tenure.

There have been reports that the 24-year-old could depart Villa Park this summer with Gerrard planning a major squad overhaul, particularly in defence with his side conceding 50 times in 36 matches this season.

Therefore, Villa may still go ahead and sign new defenders that will beat Konsa to a starting spot whilst the Englishman is now unlikely to be bought this summer given his injury and the uncertainties that could bring.

It’s a major blow for the defender and could lead to an even greater predicament that will surely have supporters gutted.

Leeds: Orta interested in Brownhill deal

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Josh Brownhill to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a recent report by 90min, who claimed that, having reportedly made an approach for the Burnley midfielder last summer, Victor Orta is once again interested in a move for the 26-year-old at the end of the current campaign.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

However, the report added that Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Everton, Fulham, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also interested in a deal for the Englishman this summer, with the Hammers thought to be leading the race at present.

Orta must move

Considering just how impressive Brownhill has been this season, despite the Clarets’ struggles in the league, it is easy to see why Orta would be keen to bring the midfielder to Elland Road ahead of 2022/23.

Indeed, over his 32 Premier League appearances this term, the £6.3m-rated talent has been imperious in the heart of the Burnley midfield, scoring two goals, registering three assists and creating two big chances for his team-mates, along with making 1.2 key passes, taking 0.9 shots and completing 0.4 dribbles per game.

The £45k-per-week man has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making 1.9 interceptions, 2.0 tackles, 1.2 clearances and winning 4.5 duels (at a success rate of 54%) per match.

These returns have seen the player who Lee Hendrie dubbed a “fabulous” talent average a quite impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.02, ranking him as his club’s fourth-best player in the English top flight.

As such, with Mateusz Klich looking to be on his way out of LS11 at the end of the current campaign, it is clear to see that Brownhill would very much make a fantastic replacement for the Poland international – leading us at Football FanCast to agree with Hendrie that Leeds should “take him all day” this summer.

Ponting rues batting lapses

In Mohali, the width of a stump – the one Steven Smith had a shy at and missed – separated Australia from a famous victory. In Bangalore, in front of a passionate crowd that was worth at least half a man to the home side, there was no Heartbreak Hotel room to check into. This was a comprehensive defeat, the manner of it all the more galling after Australia had matched India for three days and more.”It’s probably a little bit harsh, isn’t it?” said Ricky Ponting, when asked about the 2-0 scoreline. “We played very well for the majority of the first Test, and pretty well for the majority of this one. It just goes to show that unless you play five good days of Test cricket – and that’s five, not four or four-and-a-half – you don’t win games.”The first Test was a great example of that. Even this Test here … our inability to break the M Vijay-Sachin Tendulkar partnership on day three was crucial to the outcome of this game. There was also our inability to bat for three sessions in the second innings of a Test match. We needed to bat for one hour longer to put India under some pressure. Then it would have been a really good game of cricket.”Ponting, who has now lost two series as captain in both India and England, fought valiantly for the series-levelling win on the fourth evening, but a classy innings of 72 was cut short when Zaheer Khan once again exhibited his mastery of reverse-swing. “I was really disappointed and down last night to get out when I did,” said Ponting. “I probably played as well yesterday as I ever have in Indian conditions. I did it for three quarters of the day but didn’t get across the line. When you get those starts, you have to capitalise.”Little went right for him when India batted. Virender Sehwag’s poor run in the fourth innings of matches continued, but India found a new hero in Cheteshwar Pujara, who stroked the ball with tremendous fluency and showed great poise on his way to 72 on debut.”I was hoping we’d take some early wickets and I was hoping we’d get Sehwag out early, which we did,” said Ponting. “We knew Sachin was going to be a big wicket for us. I guess the Pujara-Vijay partnership put us a bit behind the eight-ball. They scored at nearly a run a ball and had the momentum going their way. That’s what I spoke to the boys about at lunch. It was about stemming the momentum and slowing the scoreboard down. We got one wicket, but we weren’t good enough to maintain it through the course of the day.”He admitted that Australia were a little surprised to see Pujara stride out in the No. 3 position that Dravid has occupied for so long. “I’m not sure what the reasoning was behind it,” he said. “I’m sure you’ll hear from MS [Dhoni] later on. I imagine it was something to do with him being fresh and not doing much batting in the first innings. I also had a look at Dravid’s record in Bangalore, and it’s not great. Maybe they were trying to be pro-active and send someone out that was willing to keep the scoreboard ticking over at a faster rate, rather than someone who was under a little bit of pressure.”Having nearly made a hash of a similar run-chase in Mohali, India went about things rather differently on this fifth-day pitch, with Pujara’s belligerence the best example of a refusal to get even slightly bogged down. “They seemed to have a bit more intent,” said Ponting. “We were able to get four wickets late that night [in Mohali]. It was a tough little period for them to bat.”That’s the sort of start we needed to have today. It seemed their approach was a bit different. Even Pujara, playing the way he did, showed great intent. He showed he was willing to take a few risks to try and get the momentum going India’s way, and it paid off for him today.”And while there was a lot of criticism of his own tactics, especially the fields set when Nathan Hauritz came on, Ponting admitted that any dreams of parity pretty much disappeared with his frontline spinner conceding 76 in just 12 overs. “Nathan’s disappointed with the way he’s bowled this game,” he said. “Saying that, I thought even our guys yesterday handled the Indian spinners well. It was the reverse-swinging ball late in the day that got them two wickets. There’s no doubt that we have some work to do, on how we bat against reverse-swing bowling and also how we deliver it when we’ve got the ball. Zaheer and Sreesanth, again today, have done that a lot better than us this series.”India now haven’t lost a Test series since Sri Lanka in 2008, but Ponting suggested that any ambitions of replicating the sort of dominance that West Indies and Australia enjoyed for so long would depend entirely on how well they dealt with the changing of the guard. “What I know about the Indian team at the moment is that all their batsmen are very experienced, bar Suresh Raina. When VVS Laxman comes back in, one of Vijay or Pujara’s going to have to go back out.”The greatest challenge they’ll have is how they maintain the standards they’ve set over the last couple of years when some of those guys start to move on. That’s been the biggest challenge for Australian cricket over the last three or four years. When those very experienced and very good players move on, how long does it take for the next crop of young guys to stand up and start playing the way those players did in winning games for their country? It’ll be interesting to see how India cope with that.”

Journalist criticises Alex Mowatt display

Journalist Steve Madeley has laid into West Brom midfielder Alex Mowatt’s ineffective performance in his side’s 4-0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest.

The Lowdown: Baggies humbled at Forest

Steve Bruce’s side made the trip to the City Ground on Monday evening, looking to pick up a rare positive result in an increasingly disappointing season.

The Baggies were thumped by their promotion-chasing opponents, however, trailing 3-0 at half-time, not helped by Darnell Furlong’s red card.

Forest added a fourth goal after the break, with the defeat leaving Bruce’s languishing 12th in the Championship table and effectively ending their playoff chances.

The Latest: Madeley critical of Mowatt

Mowatt had a bad evening, with Sofascore noting that his total of 23 touches was comfortably fewer than goalkeeper David Button managed (43), and Madeley took to Twitter to criticise his efforts:

“Molumby on for Mowatt, who has had a poor night.”

The Verdict: Can this season end?

After such confidence at the start of the season, when Valerien Ismael arriving as manager and automatic promotion expected by many, this has turned into a dismal campaign.

Mowatt perhaps sums it all up, also coming in with big expectations but not matching the hype, providing just six direct goal involvements and often frustrating fans.

For West Brom to be 12th in the league with the squad they have is simply not good enough and there must be question marks over Bruce’s future moving forward.

The right decisions need to be made in the summer, in terms of the manager and playing personnel, ensuring the Baggies produce a far stronger campaign next time around.

Rangers player ratings vs St. Mirren

Glasgow Rangers got the job done in the end as they won 4-0 on the road in the Premiership on Sunday.

Kemar Roofe bagged himself a hat-trick, while Joe Aribo grabbed a fourth goal with around 15 minutes to go as all three points headed back to Ibrox.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-3/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, it was not exactly a vintage performance against St Mirren, as the Teddy Bears were criticised for their build-up play in particular, and The Transfer Tavern have used statistical experts SofaScore to analyse who their three worst performers (to have played at least 45 minutes) were on the day:

Scott Wright (6.7)

Despite earning an assist after coming on for Ryan Kent as a half-time substitute, Wright was one of Rangers’ lowest-ranked performers in Paisley with 6.7.

The 24-year-old lost 50% of his duels, missed one big chance, failed to win a tackle and gave away possession three times. Also, he had just 28 touches of the ball in his 45 minutes on the pitch – one more than John Lundstram, who lasted a mere 26 minutes before going off injured.

Filip Helander (6.7)

Perhaps harshly given that an injury forced him off just before half-time, Helander was given a 6.7 overall rating.

The Sweden international lost out on three of his duels and also failed to record any interceptions or tackles, while he was inaccurate with four of his long ball attempts and lost possession nine times in total, hence his relatively low rating.

Leon King (6.7)

Also given a 6.7 rating, Helander’s replacement King ranked as one of the Teddy Bears’ worst players, despite helping his team to keep a clean sheet.

The defender lost all three of his duels and also made no interceptions or tackles, giving the ball away needlessly seven times in a less than stellar performance.

Liverpool deliver injury update on Thiago

Liverpool will be without Thiago for their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon following Jurgen Klopp’s recent update.

What’s the story?

Speaking about the 30-year-old in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Carabao Cup match against Arsenal in midweek, Klopp revealed: “Hopefully, he will be in full team training after the international break, to prepare for the Cardiff game.”

Big miss for Liverpool

The Spaniard has had his fair share of injury problems this season for Liverpool as he struggles to get consistent game-time under his belt – his longest run of action saw him make seven appearances in the Premier League consecutively between November and December.

However, that run illustrated signs of Thiago being back to his absolute best, with the midfielder starting in six successive games and seeing the Reds rattle off win after win – Klopp’s side scored 17 goals and conceded just twice in that time.

As per WhoScored, his average match rating of 7.07 ranks him as Liverpool’s second-best performing midfielder this season in the Premier League behind only Fabinho.

It’s therefore no surprise that Noel Whelan has recently admitted an early return for Thiago would be a huge boost to the Reds. He said: “It’s in those sorts of times where you perhaps turn to a player like Thiago with his bags of experience.

“A quick return would certainly be a timely return from Liverpool’s perspective. Players like him are the ones with the voices in the dressing room and out on the pitch.

“They’ll need to dig deep to win games without players like Mane and Salah, and if he can come back then it’ll be massive to have a wily old fox like him available.”

Alas, the news that he will still be missing against Crystal Palace is sure to be a blow for Klopp, and will also leave Reds fans gutted ahead of Sunday.

Meanwhile, Liverpool are still monitoring this Premier League star…

Rogers holds on to Test hopes

Australia’s discarded Test opener Chris Rogers hasn’t given up on adding to his sole cap, despite slipping behind Phillip Hughes in the backup queue

Brydon Coverdale in Derby09-Jul-2010Australia’s discarded Test opener Chris Rogers hasn’t given up on adding to his sole cap, despite slipping behind Phillip Hughes in the backup queue. Rogers made a professional 93 for Derbyshire against Ricky Ponting’s men in their warm-up game and, after losing his Cricket Australia contract nearly two years ago, this date was circled on his calendar.”It was an enjoyable day,” Rogers said. “I’ve been looking forward to this challenge for a while. It’s good to get some runs against Australia. It’s good for my confidence and hopefully it’ll show a few people that I can play. This game has been looked forward to, almost since last year. I’ve been pretty nervous about the challenge but looking forward to it. To do well is very satisfying.”At 32, Rogers knows that time is not on his side if he is to resume the Test career that began at the WACA against India in January 2008. Shane Watson and Simon Katich are firmly established at the top of the order in Tests, while Hughes is clearly next in line and as an older former Test player, Rogers is in the same boat as Phil Jaques.Rogers had another productive summer for Victoria last season, though his 641 Sheffield Shield runs at 49.30 was down from his peak a couple of years earlier. However, Rogers is aware that Katich was 32 when he broke back into the Test team, so it can be done, and with 912 county runs at 65.14 this year he still holds a flicker of hope of one day playing another Test.”It’s always there,” Rogers said. “I know Australia are looking to the future a little bit, too. But I’d like to think that if there was ever an opportunity that I’d be ready. Today has been a good day.”For half the day, Rogers frustrated the Australian bowlers in their only day of bowling in match conditions before Tuesday’s first Test against Pakistan. Rogers was eventually caught behind off Johnson, who found some reverse swing later in the innings, and Rogers was impressed with the attack.”I always think Dougie [Bollinger] is a fine bowler, and Hilf has good skills, but Mitch was probably the pick today, when he ran in and got it reversing and hit the wicket, that became very tough,” Rogers said. “I didn’t last too long then. I could see that on a wicket that’s a bit more conducive, they’re going to be very much a handful.”
