Spurs could seal Caceres signing for bargain fee with agent in "open" talks

Tottenham could sign an "untouchable" international centre-back for very affordable money as a report shares "open discussions".

Spurs prioritising new defender in January

Head coach Ange Postecoglou has been forced to deal with a wave of injury and suspension problems lately, especially at the heart of his defence. Micky van de Ven, who was starring for Spurs after his arrival from Wolfsburg in the summer, won't be available to play again until 2024 as a serious hamstring injury keeps him sidelined.

Postecoglou's lack of faith in Eric Dier has also resulted in the Australian turning to makeshift option Ben Davies, who is now partnering Cristian Romero at the heart of Tottenham's defence. The latter recently returned from a three-game suspension, but as evidenced by his needless lunge during Tottenham's 4-1 win over Newcastle last weekend, Romero can often be walking on a tightrope.

Lack of cover behind van de Ven and Romero is a big problem which chairman Daniel Levy and sporting director Johan Lange quite simply need to address. Tottenham are prioritising a new centre-back signing as a result, according to reliable media sources, and there have been many names linked.

Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite is being chased by Spurs as an option, but he isn't the only one, with his teammate Ben Godfrey, Genoa star Radu Dragusin, Benfica starlet Morato and Sporting Lisbon international Goncalo Inacio among the other centre-backs linked with moves to Spurs

Another very viable name to be mentioned in recent months is Club America defender Sebastian Caceres. The Uruguay international has really impressed under former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa at international level, which has apparently prompted major interest from clubs in Europe.

Tottenham hold "open" agent talks for Caceres

One of those sides is Tottenham, as per widespread reports previously, and an update has now come to light courtesy of Tuttsport (via Sport Witness).

When relaying Serie A side Torino's interest in the 24-year-old, the outlet claims Spurs have "open discussions" with the agent of Caceres over joining Postecoglou's side.

Little else is mentioned beyond that, but if Spurs are serious about making a move, they may have to act fairly quickly. The report claims Napoli and Sevilla are also chasing Caceres, who is available for a bargain fee of around £6 million including bonuses.

That valuation is unquestionably great value for money, as highlighted by his growing reputation. Caceres has become a star for Uruguay in the last few months, with journalist Rodrigo Romano calling the South American an "untouchable" under Bielsa – as translated from Spanish.

Four-day Tests loom in Australia's future

A November 2020 home fixture against Afghanistan looms as a likely rehearsal for four-day Test matches in Australia, as the Cricket Australia chief executive Kevin Roberts declared the governing body and other nations needed to be more open to the concept beyond the end of the first two editions of the World Test Championship from 2019 to 2023.Television ratings for the first Test against India in Adelaide, the inaugural home Test under the new dual broadcast deal with Fox Sports and Seven, spiked noticeably on the Sunday, a day that would likely become the consistent final day of matches should four-day Tests become more prevalent. The two networks gained a combined audience of 1.261 million during the third session, comfortably the largest of the match.Roberts, who replaced James Sutherland as CA chief executive in October, said that the combination of audience sizes, easing of scheduling squeezes, and Test cricket’s own history of variable playing hours made the four-day question a serious one for all administrators, particularly for Tests played outside the championship locked into five-day matches.”Outside the Test Championship that’s the opportunity,” Roberts told SEN Radio. “The Test Championship is five-day Test cricket out to 2021, so that doesn’t change, but outside of that there are other possibilities to consider and beyond that, beyond 2021 what it might look like. There’s a bit to be said for it isn’t there, and it’s certainly something I think we need to be open-minded to down the track.”The average duration of a Test match is just a shade over four days and certainly without jumping to conclusions that that is the right solution, it is one possibility we’ve got to be open to. There’s been timeless Tests over the years, we know there were even three-day Tests, so Test cricket has not been five days in duration forever, and I think the concept of four days going forward is something we need to be open to without jumping to conclusions.”The Perth Stadium hosted its first Test•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

Australia entered into discussions with Ireland about playing an inaugural Test ahead of next year’s Ashes series before being outmanoeuvred by the ECB, which scheduled a Test against Ireland at Lord’s by way of England’s own preparation for the same series. The Afghanistan Test, scheduled for November 2020 in the lead-up to the next home series against India, would provide an ideal chance to try the shorter match, probably played over around 100 overs per day.A crowd of 20,641 turned up to Perth Stadium for the first day of the second Test against India, comfortably less than half the venue’s cavernous 60,000 capacity. While claiming that the crowd was greater than the capacity of the venerable WACA Ground across the Swan River – larger attendances were recorded for each of the first three days of last year’s Ashes Test – Roberts was unable to answer why the premium space behind the bowler’s arm at the Justin Langer Stand end of the stadium had been shut. This has meant that only members have been able to watch play from that vantage point.”Good question and I don’t have an answer to that one right now,” Roberts said. “I’m not familiar with the specific details as to how level 5 operates and can you operate sections at a time. I don’t know the answer to that but it’s a good question as you look at it from the box here, a brilliant view down the wicket from where we’re sitting. They’re the sorts of things that we always need to consider, how many people can we get behind the bowler’s arm. So it’s a good question and unfortunately I don’t have a good answer for you.”The facts are we had about 3,000-4,000 spare seats in the shade that were available for people who required them. In the event that those were used and we needed more we had plans to immediately open level five as well. We judged that based on need and there were enough seats in the shade based on need and in the event we ran out of those, then level five was being opened up, so there was a lot of talk about it. But in terms of the facts of that one, there were more seats available in the shade.”I wouldn’t suggest that was an economic decision, it was a practical decision yesterday in terms of the most practical way to operate the stadium. In the event there was need then there was absolutely no opposition from a CA perspective to opening up level 5. There’s always a balance and we’re conscious that things will never be perfect for absolutely every individual at a stadium, but certainly we seek to optimise them as much as we can.”

Shaw v Siraj the highlight in Mumbai's march to final

After impressing in his first Test series, Prithvi Shaw presented a case to be considered for the shorter formats but not without some luck

Saurabh Somani in Bengaluru17-Oct-2018AFP

After heavy rain ended the contest early, it was Mumbai who marched into the Vijay Hazare Trophy final by recording their ninth consecutive win in the competition, but Hyderabad, who weren’t even sure of their participation until 12 hours prior to their first fixture, can walk away a proud side.Rohit Rayudu, the younger cousin of Ambati Rayudu, displayed admirable composure to make 122 not out. Struggling on 52 off 95 at one stage with the lower order for company, he ensured Hyderabad almost doubled their score in the last 15 overs to post a competitive 246 for 8. It wasn’t enough, though, with Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer scoring half-centuries as Mumbai won by the VJD method. A drizzle that turned into a torrential downpour forced the players off the field with Mumbai 155 for 2 in 25 overs. They didn’t return. The spice in the contest was provided by two people who were part of India’s dressing room until four days ago. There are many who think Mohammed Siraj and Shaw ought to be in the mix for India in limited-overs cricket too, and not just Test cricket. Shaw, of course, announced his entry in Tests in grand style, with a Man-of-the-Series performance against West Indies on debut.Siraj was considered unlucky for not making his own debut against West Indies, with the team management ignoring his red-hot form and opting to give the cap to Shardul Thakur, who limped out of the attack with his Test career just 1.4 overs old.On Wednesday, both Shaw and Siraj showed why pitch-forking them to the top level in ODIs might be a good idea. Siraj finished with first-spell figures of 3-0-33-0, while Shaw hit a fifty off just 34 balls, but for anyone watching both were winners.Siraj was introduced in the fifth over, but the stage had been set in the third over itself. Shaw had just slogged Akash Bhandari’s legspin wide of long-on for a boundary when he pulled up clutching his right shoulder. Play was held up while the physio ran out to treat him, and Shaw resumed, but the shoulder was still troubling him.Siraj opted for a short-ball attack. It would perhaps have been his go-to tactic anyway, having seen that Shaw could be uncomfortable when the ball was climbing into his body, particularly against the West Indies quick Shannon Gabriel. With an injured right shoulder, it made sense to force Shaw to use his bottom hand more.Siraj had Shaw in some trouble in the first over, and the action peaked in his next. The first ball went to the long-on boundary, but off a toe-ended pull that just cleared mid-on. Siraj then got his bouncer on target, and Shaw got a top edge on a pull to fine-leg. M Ravi Kiran ran in, got both hands to the ball while tumbling forward, and saw it pop right out. Three balls later, there was a similar chance, but easier. Standing not as far back, Ravi Kiran reached another top-edged pull in time, but the ball popped in and out again.Siraj had handled the first drop reasonably calmly, but he was seething now, standing mid-pitch with hands on his hips and eyes that could bore a hole in the ground. Captain Ambati Rayudu gave vent to his feelings, staying mid-pitch after Siraj had walked off and glaring at the fielder.Ravi Kiran had to bowl the next over, and he had Rayudu and Siraj at mid-off and mid-on. Both put their anger aside to huddle with the bowler and offer words of encouragement, with Siraj patting him on the back. With shoulders almost visibly drooping, Ravi Kiran opted to play safe, bowling slower balls in the channel to get a quiet over in.Siraj came back for his third over. Perhaps expecting a shorter one, Shaw hung back to the second delivery. It thudded in full and it was ball hitting bat rather than the other way round. The bat flew out of Shaw’s hands, and he was clutching his shoulder again. If Siraj thought he had won, there was one final act left, and the over ended with three short balls going for 6, 6, 4. Siraj’s effort and fury should have got him Shaw’s wicket, now it worked against him, with Shaw ready to pounce, and the balls not rising quite as high either. The last shot took Shaw to his half-century, making it the fourth time in four innings in this tournament that he had passed the milestone. The scorecard will show that Shaw took 29 runs off the 14 balls he faced from Siraj. Scorecards don’t always capture the whole story – but perhaps the watching selectors might have.

Explained: Why Man Utd fans have been left fuming by Brentford kick-off time

Manchester United supporters have been left fuming after seeing their Premier League clash with Brentford scheduled for 8pm on Easter Saturday.

  • Man Utd host Brentford on Saturday night
  • Fans annoyed by kick-off time
  • Train problems due to Easter shutdown
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester United have seen their Premier League clash with Brentford on Saturday moved to a late kick-off. The two teams will meet at the Gtech Community Stadium at 8pm local time on Easter Saturday. This is the fourth time this season that Manchester United fans have seen their team play away from home at 8pm on Saturday, more than any other team in the English top flight.

  • Getty

    THE EXPLANATION

The problem for visiting supporters is that train services between London and Manchester are facing disruption over the Easter weekend. The last train from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly on Saturday leaves two minutes before United's 8pm kick-off. Engineering work means there will be no services between the two cities on Easter Sunday. All of this means that Manchester-based fans who want to watch the game face having to spend the weekend in London, unless they fancy a 410-mile round trip by car.

  • WHAT MAN UTD FANS HAVE SAID

A spokesperson for the Manchester United Supporters' Trust told : "For the fourth time this season, United are away from home at 8pm on a Saturday which just goes to show the blatant disregard the TV companies and football authorities have for match-going fans. During Covid they said that football without fans is nothing – it’s time for the football authorities to show they meant it."

Chas Banks, secretary of the Manchester United Disabled Supporters’ Association, also hit out at the scheduling and called for change. He said: “I don’t travel to away games anymore. After years watching United home and away, it all became too much as the years passed – I’m in my 70s now and a disabled wheelchair user – and the football authorities clearly didn’t give a flying one about the problems it causes to fans when they schedule kick-offs at crazy times.

“They sit safe in the knowledge that whatever bonkers changes they made to the fixture list, the United away supporters would find a way to get there somehow. The scheduled kick-off changes seem even crazier if, like me, it takes three hours to get from your bed to actually leaving the house to begin your journey. As time has passed it really did start to feel like they were doing their absolute damnedest to stop me and other disabled United fans from watching my club playing away from home.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD

United fans will head to London fresh from a thrilling 4-3 win over rivals Liverpool in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last time out. Manager Erik ten Hag said afterwards he hoped the victory could be a "turning point" for his team after what's been a difficult campaign for the Red Devils.

Rangers: Ibrox side struck gold by selling free signing for £4m

Glasgow Rangers head coach Michael Beale oversaw an overhaul of the playing squad throughout the summer transfer window as a number of players were moved on to make way for new signings.

The Light Blues head coach snapped up Sam Lammers, Cyriel Dessers, Danilo, Kieran Dowell, Dujon Sterling, Jack Butland, Jose Cifuentes, Abdallah Sima, and Leon Balogun ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The Gers also decided to cash in on Glen Kamara, Fashion Sakala, and Antonio Colak to build up some funds to strengthen the squad.

Sakala was a particularly surprising exit as the Zambia international had enjoyed an impressive 2022/23 campaign with the Light Blues.

His transfer to Al-Fayha did, however, represent the end of a terrific piece of business for the club as they were able to make a significant profit on the talented ace.

How much did Rangers pay for Sakala?

The Scottish giants did not pay a penny to sign the Zambian dynamo from Belgian side Oostende as they snapped him up on a free transfer.

At the time of the move, FootballTransfers placed his Expected Transfer Value at €2.3m (£2m) and this suggests that the club secured a bargain with their £0 swoop for his services.

Then-manager Steven Gerrard hailed him as a player with the potential to thrive in Scotland and detailed his hopes for the speedy gem to fulfill his potential at Ibrox.

Former Rangers forward Fashion Sakala.

He made the move to Rangers after an impressive 2020/21 campaign with Oostende in Belgium, as the former Spartak Moscow prospect showcased his goalscoring quality.

Sakala caught the eye with 16 goals and five assists in 34 matches in all competitions for the club, which included three goals and two assists in five Jupiter Pro League play-off matches.

The right-footed whiz averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.92 across 31 Pro League starts for the Belgian outfit and scored 16 goals – slightly better than a strike every other start on average.

How many goals did Sakala score for Rangers?

Sakala ended his career at Rangers with 24 goals in 91 appearances for the club in all competitions after Gerrard opted to snap him up after his impressive form for Oostende during the 2020/21 season.

The 26-year-old hotshot produced 12 goals and seven assists in 50 matches for the Light Blues throughout his debut campaign in Scotland.

He averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.05 across 30 Scottish Premiership outings and contributed at the top end of the pitch with nine goals. However, his teammates often let him down in the final third as the talented whiz created seven 'big chances' and 38 key passes, only to be rewarded with three assists.

Sakala also played a crucial role in Rangers' Scottish FA Cup success as he caught the eye throughout the competition on their way to lifting the trophy at Hampden under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who replaced Gerrard during the season, in 2022.

The Zambia international scored in each of his first three appearances in the tournament and then assisted the winning goal against Celtic in the semi-final before the club beat Hearts 2-0 in the final.

He followed up on his impressive debut campaign with the Gers with a return of 12 goals and eight assists in 41 matches throughout the 2022/23 season under van Bronckhorst and Michael Beale combined.

Sakala plundered 12 goals and seven assists in 22 Premiership starts as he averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.05 across 29 appearances in total.

Only Antonio Colak (14) and James Tavernier (16) scored more top-flight goals for Rangers than the former Oostende star and this shows that he was one of the club's biggest goal threats throughout the year.

Former Rangers forward Fashion Sakala.

The electric ace, who scored four goals in five games during the top-six split, ended his two full seasons with the Gers on 21 goals and ten assists in 35 starts in total.

This means that Sakala contributed with a goal or an assist every 1.13 Premiership starts on average throughout his time with the Scottish giants, which highlights how efficient he was for the club.

How much did Rangers sell Sakala for?

Rangers reportedly raked in a fee of around £4m from Al-Fayha during the summer transfer window after he fell down the pecking order in Beale's thinking due to the likes of Danilo, Lammers, and Dessers coming through the door.

This shows that Gerrard, and former sporting director Ross Wilson, struck gold for the Light Blues in the summer of 2021 when they swooped to sign Sakala on a free transfer.

The Scottish side enjoyed his impressive talents on the pitch for two years before they were able to sell him for £4m more than they signed him for, which was nothing.

How many goals has Sakala scored this season?

Although, Beale may end up regretting his decision to cash in on the 26-year-old "firework" – as he was once dubbed by ex-Gers defender Alan Hutton – as the talented forward has enjoyed a terrific start to life in Saudi Arabia.

Sakala has scored four goals and assisted one in seven Pro League appearances for Al-Fayha and averaged an exceptional Sofascore rating of 7.46 in that time.

Meanwhile, Lammers, Dessers, and Danilo have four goals and zero assists in 16 combined Premiership matches, whilst no Rangers player has produced more than two goals so far this season.

Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers.

The 5 foot 10 marksman's Sofascore rating would also place him third within the Gers squad this season as only Borna Barisic (7.48) and Tavernier (7.70) have averaged higher ratings in the league.

These statistics suggest that it may have been a mistake to move Sakala on from Ibrox in the summer as they have been unable to replace his goalscoring prowess, as it stands, and he is enjoying himself in front of goal with his new side.

However, there is no doubt that, whatever happens from now, Gerrard played a blinder with his move to sign him on a free transfer in the summer of 2021 and that the 26-year-old speedster should be seen as a successful signing by the English boss.

Everton: Toffees were bled dry by "complete dud" who cost £1.7m per game

Everton have endured a rough start to the season under Sean Dyche, with the former Burnley boss still struggling to uncover his strongest side and the best philosophy with which to play them.

Given the distinct lack of quality he has at his disposal, this is a task far harder than the other relegation-threatened outfits, who at the very least have a set play style to which they can adhere.

The Toffees have been without an identity for years now, with Frank Lampard failing to bring one back, Carlo Ancelotti leaving before he could properly integrate his, and Ronald Koeman, Marco Silva and Sam Allardyce all messing things up in between. It is years of questionable decision-making from the top that has led them into their current position of peril, and only with a minor miracle will they continue to survive.

Ronald-koeman-everton

Their latest 52-year-old head coach has one of the toughest tasks of his career ahead of him, to steer a rudderless ship to safety with their shiny new stadium on the horizon. It is widely believed that retaining their Premier League status until their entry into the Bramley-Moore Dock arena is of paramount importance towards keeping the seismic club afloat.

However, their dwindling finances are the result of years of fiscal mismanagement, spending freely and without thought on players and managers without a plan in place. Farhad Moshiri may be desperately trying to sell the Toffees now, but much of the blood will forever remain on his hands, alongside his much-maligned accomplice Bill Kenwright.

Who is Everton's worst-ever signing?

Whilst some of the club's worst-ever acquisitions may have come before the Iranian billionaire got involved, it is indisputable that some of the biggest financial outlays have come under his watch, with nine of the top ten record signings brought in with his money.

Adorning that list is a group of players who have largely disappointed, with one or two outstanding exceptions. Richarlison and Romelu Lukaku were immediate successes, with their goals vital, and the funds their sales would rack in proving imperative too. Amadou Onana is another who has enjoyed a fine start, and boasts a valuation that could one day turn a huge profit.

However, the likes of Yannick Bolasie, Michael Keane, Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean are all stars who joined with big reputations but failed to live up to the expectations.

And yet, there are even signings outside of that list that have arguably proven even worse value for money, given the fee expended and the output they would return.

Few stand out more than Davy Klaassen in this regard, as someone who hardly cost a ridiculous amount, but must be recognised as one of their worst pound-for-pound signings.

After all, the Dutchman joined during a summer of vast overhaul under Ronald Koeman, who had just led his new side to seventh in his debut year. Financial backing was expected, but his tactical ideals remained muddled going into the new campaign. He would therefore bring in the midfielder alongside Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson, thus drowning out the number ten position with three superstars all vying for the spot.

As such, the club record signing and a former club legend took precedence, and the former Ajax captain would make a mere 16 appearances across his torrid tenure on Merseyside, failing to score.

Such a vast underperformance was always bound to draw criticism, with former QPR midfielder Joey Barton branding him "a complete dud". A fair comment, given the high expectations placed upon him when Netherlands and Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff likened him to Tony Kroos.

In an interview back in 2022, the disappointing midfielder would blame the tactics as one reason for his underperformance: "At Everton, I really suffered from culture shock. If it’s not going well there, they hoof the ball forward."

Although they hardly expended a king's ransom to tempt him to Goodison Park, Klaassen certainly failed to live up to the billing, thus marking him out as one of Moshiri's worst buys.

How much did Everton pay for Davy Klaassen?

Such a notion is only exacerbated when viewing the financial side of the deal, which did leave a mark during a summer where they would spend a total of €158.2m (£137m).

Whilst his £23.6m fee was just a drop in the ocean of that vast overhaul, it has certainly contributed to the growing financial worries that continue to mount on the club with each passing year.

Soccer Football – FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 – Round of 16 – Netherlands v United States – Khalifa International Stadium, Doha, Qatar – December 3, 2022 Tyler Adams of the U.S. in action with Netherlands’ Davy Klaassen REUTERS/Dylan Martinez

Such huge risks cannot afford to backfire as often as they have done, and as such the Toffees are seemingly constantly seeking the next big sale to balance the books.

What was Davy Klaassen's salary at Everton?

Although Klaassen would only spend a sole year in Merseyside, adding his salary onto that transfer fee only emphasises the fiscal drain the 41-cap flop posed.

After all, his £70k-per-week wage was ludicrous when compared to what he offered, but at the time it actually marked a fair price for someone who had stood out in his homeland.

Therefore, this figure added a further £3.6m to the total sum, bringing that up to £27.4m. Then, comparing that with the appearances the 30-year-old mustered, and Koeman's costly purchase actually ended up commanding £1.7m for every appearance he made.

Did Davy Klaassen deserve to earn £70k-per-week?

Whilst it marked crazy demands in hindsight, beforehand this entire deal actually seemed rather shrewd.

After all, the hard-working midfielder was coming off the back of a fine creative year in his homeland, having scored 14 and assisted ten in the Eredivisie, whilst also helping captain his side to the Europa League final.

Koeman would even gloat about the magnitude of such a capture, noting after his signing: "Davy has made this step in his career at the right time. He spent four seasons with Ajax and gained experiences in Europe and with the Dutch team. He will have to get used to the high tempo we play and it will tougher for him, especially from a physical point of view, but Davy has developed well as a player. He is intelligent and can read the game.”

Naturally, that failed to come to fruition, and after just one year he would trade Goodison Park for Werder Bremen. There he actually recaptured some semblance of his form before returning to Ajax in 2020. He now plays his football at Inter Milan, once again trying his hand outside of the Netherlands.

Consegui coisas grandes dentro do clube.

O Corinthians volta a campo neste domingo. às 16h, para enfrentar o Flamengo, na Neo Química Arena, pela 17ª rodada do Brasileirão-2020. Atualmente, o Timão está com 18 pontos, na 14ª posição na tabela.
