    WHAT HAPPENED?

Mullin, who has netted 105 goals for the Red Dragons across three productive campaigns, underwent minor spinal surgery at the end of last season. He was forced to sit out another series of friendly dates in North America as a result.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wrexham have opened the 2024-25 season without their talismanic No.10, with Jacob Mendy another of those currently stuck on the sidelines. They were able to claim a 3-2 victory over Wycombe in the club’s first outing at League One level in 20 years.

    WHAT PARKINSON SAID

More shrewd recruitment, funded by Hollywood co-owners, means that Phil Parkinson boasts plenty of strength in depth. He has said of nursing walking wounded back towards full fitness, with no new knocks picked up in a 4-2 Carabao Cup first round defeat to Sheffield United: “Everyone got through the game well. Mulls is continuing his progress. He didn't travel with us to Sheffield but was working really hard back in Wrexham so that is good. Jacob is getting ever closer to being available for selection so we have got a good squad to choose from and we will think long and hard about the team for Sunday.”

'It's perfect!' – Declan Rice tipped to benefit from Mikel Merino's £25m move to Arsenal as Gunners legend endorses pursuit of Spain star

  • Mikel Arteta wants more steel in midfield
  • Pushing to sign Merino from Real Sociedad
  • Parlour believes Rice will benefit from Merino's incoming
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Merino, currently with Real Sociedad, has an impressive track record, including a stint at Newcastle United during the 2017/18 season. His recent contributions to Spain's Euro 2024 victory in Germany further highlight his capabilities. Arsenal, in need of a new midfielder following Emile Smith Rowe's move to Fulham, sees Merino as a valuable addition to Mikel Arteta's squad.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Merino's versatility allows him to play as a left-sided No. 8 or in a double pivot, making him a strategic fit alongside Declan Rice and captain Martin Odegaard. He is being touted as a natural successor to Granit Xhaka, who transferred to Bayer Leverkusen last year, and Parlour's endorsement comes amid ongoing discussions between Arsenal and Real Sociedad over a £25 million (€30m/$32m) deal for the Spanish midfielder.

  • WHAT PARLOUR SAID

Speaking on the talkSPORT Breakfast Show, Parlour said: "They're looking at Thomas Partey, he might be on his way out, so they do need a little bit of strengthening in that midfield. It [Merino transfer] gives Declan Rice a little bit more license to go forward if you've got another holding midfielder in there. I know he plays like that for England in that holding role, but I like to see Declan get forward. And as I've said before, I'm a little bit of an old-fashioned midfielder, I like the box-to-box players. It's just using your common sense as a midfielder, if someone runs past you that is playing alongside you and gets forward, you just fill in for him, and vice versa, it's very, very straightforward."

Parlour continued to praise Merino, saying, "He's a top player, performing well for both Spain and Real Sociedad. At 28, he's at an optimal age, making this a good investment for Arsenal. With £25 million, it's a solid deal, and their good relationship with Real Sociedad, especially with [Kieran] Tierney's loan, facilitates this transfer."

Navnita Gautam joins RCB, rare woman support staffer in IPL

On Thursday, the franchise appointed Navnita as a massage therapist for IPL 2020

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Oct-2019Royal Challengers Bangalore have brought a woman staffer on board with the appointment of Navnita Gautam as a massage therapist for IPL 2020. It is rare for IPL teams to appoint female staff although the now defunct Deccan Chargers did have Ashleigh Joyce and Patricia Jenkins working as massage therapists in 2008 and 2009.As per a press release from the franchise on Thursday, Navnita will be working with head physiotherapist Evan Speechly and strength & conditioning coach Basu Shanker “to identify, evaluate, provide guidance and implement massage therapy to suit the team and any relevant prevailing conditions”.She will also be responsible for performing specialised techniques pertaining to the preparation, motivation and physical ailments of individual players.Talking about the appointment, the franchise chairman Sanjeev Churiwala said: “I am very pleased to be a part of this moment in history and another step in the right direction. The game has come a long way, in many ways, in terms of the women’s cricket team and how many people are watching it, the interest was long due. Sport is a great enabler, but it is important to ensure that the principles of equity in participation also extends to its staffing bodies. Increasing participation and success by women in all sporting arenas have made this possible and we at RCB are very thrilled to have found great talent in Navnita.”In August, RCB, who are still looking for their maiden IPL title, had appointed former New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson as director of cricket and former Australia batsman Simon Katich as head coach in a complete overhaul of their support staff.

93-touch Liverpool colossus outshone Mac Allister against Man City

Liverpool failed to regain the top spot in the Premier League as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds failed to make the most of their many opportunities to take the lead during the second half after a penalty from Alexis Mac Allister ruled out John Stones' opener during the first half.

Jurgen Klopp's side were dominant and aggressive in the press throughout the game, and racked up 2.46 xG – to City's 1.61 – but ultimately had to settle for a point.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Mac Allister, who scored the equaliser from the spot, put in a superb performance in the middle of the park, but the real star of the match for the German boss was his captain – Virgil van Dijk.

Alexis Mac Allister's stats vs Man City

The Argentina international remained composed as he stuck his penalty to Ederson's right and beyond the despairing dive of the Brazilian, who had given the spot-kick away with a rash challenge on Darwin Nunez.

He was also combative out of possession with his constant pressing and harrying of the City midfielders to make sure that they did not have any time on the ball.

As you can see in the table above, Mac Allister was dominant in his physical battles, by winning eight of his 14 duels, but his work in possession could have been better.

To only complete 82% of his attempted passes without creating a single chance for his teammates suggests that the midfielder was wasteful at times without being progressive, which he may look back on as an area to improve on next time out.

Virgil van Dijk's stats against Man City

Meanwhile, van Dijk was the real star of the show at the heart of Liverpool's defence as he was almost faultless throughout the match for the Reds.

Barring one moment when Erling Haaland robbed him of possession during the first half, the Netherlands international typified the team's aggressive and dominant performance.

The former Southampton colossus, who had 93 touches of the ball in total, was super reliable with his use of the ball as he completed 97% (77/79) of his attempted passes, which included six of his seven long pass attempts.

Virgil van Dijk

Defensively, van Dijk won five of his eight duels and made a number of key defensive contributions to cut out City attacks, with four tackles and four interceptions.

He made two last-man tackles to bail the rest of his defence out after they had been bypassed, and brilliantly marshalled Haaland – as the last man – into a weak effort on goal after the Norway international looked like he had a free run on goal.

These statistics show that van Dijk was outstanding in and out of possession throughout the match, with his calmness on the ball and dominance defensively, which is why he was the real star of the show over Mac Allister, who was sloppy at times.

Journalist names new target Wolves have scouted, could replace Gomes

Gary O'Neil and Wolves find themselves in a difficult position in this month's transfer window. Despite making an £80m profit last summer, the Midlands outfit still aren't out of the woods when it comes to Financial Fair Play compliance, and that's set to shape any business they do before the deadline.

There's a chance that Wolves may sign targets on an initial loan with a later obligation or option to buy, deferring payments to next season's accounts, or they could alternatively reinvest money they generate through outgoings. Either way, there will be an emphasis on finding bargain gems for now, rather than doing headline deals. And Wolves' talent-spotters may have found one player who fits that bill.

Wolves one of six clubs keen on Rosario

According to Chris McKenna, a journalist for The Daily Mirror, Wolves are interested in Pablo Rosario at Nice. They're one of a quartet of Premier League sides "keeping an eye on" the midfielder this month, alongside Fulham, West Ham and Brentford.

Wolves have been scouting the player "in recent months" and have clearly been impressed by what they've seen, but Rosario is also attracting interest from Germany in the form of Stuttgart and Werder Bremen, so they don't exactly have a free run at the player.

Rosario offers possible Gomes solution amid Spurs interest

Rosario played for Feyenoord, Ajax and PSV during his time in youth football, but eventually left his homeland to join Nice in 2021. He's four short of a century of appearances for the south-of-France club, having tacked 17 onto his tally this season. While he's not considered undroppable by manager Francesco Farioli, he has been heavily involved, starting ten of their 18 Ligue 1 games so far this season.

While he's a defensive midfielder by trade, Rosario has featured in four different positions this season, also filling in as a centre-back, right-back and more advanced midfielder. All that chopping and changing makes it hard to assess him statistically, but it's the kind of versatility that makes him a manager's dream and an asset to any squad.

It should also be noted, given that the majority of those roles are defensive in nature, that Nice have only conceded 11 league goals this season, fewer than any side in Europe's top five leagues. Rosario deserves credit for the role he's played in that achievement.

Wolves are currently fielding interest in 2023 signing Joao Gomes, who's caught the eye of Champions League-chasing Tottenham Hotspur and could be subject to a "substantial" bid. Given that Rosario is primarily a defensive shield, he could be a short-to-medium term replacement for the Brazilian in Gary O'Neil's midfield, if indeed he does leave. In light of Wolves' FFP concerns, it might be that the money from his potential sale is directly put towards this deal, though we'll wait to see if Spurs match Wolves' asking price first.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Big name players, many towards the latter stages of their career – but not exclusively, have flooded out of Europe to Saudi Arabia since the start of 2023. The enormous financial incentives on offer have often made the headlines, although the football has continued to be criticised and not everyone has found it to be what they wished for. Jordan Henderson wound up leaving Al-Ettifaq within a few months after seemingly struggling to settle and being left underwhelmed by poor attendances outside the country's state-controlled 'Big Four' clubs.

  • WHAT GERRARD SAID

Gerrard told the : "I knew they were going to be extremely ambitious. A lot of big-name footballers were coming to the league. There is the ambition to get there fast. The change in this league from 12 months ago, I have felt it. It has improved immensely. If that continues then I believe this will get closer to the top and I want to be part of that."

WHAT NEXT FOR GERRARD & AL-ETTIFAQ?

Having finished sixth in the recently concluded 2023-24 campaign, Gerrard's Al-Ettifaq will have their work cut out closing the gap on those above them, finishing 48 points adrift of champions Al-Hilal and 17 points off the AFC Champions League places. Making up an 11-point gap to fourth place to qualify for Champions League Two, Asia's equivalent of the Europa League, might be more realistic, although fifth-place Al-Ittihad would be expected to bounce back in 2024-25 after a surprisingly poor season from the previous reigning champions.
