Exclusive: Palace journalist makes big Vieira admission

The Athletic’s Crystal Palace reporter Matt Woosnam has told Football FanCast that Patrick Vieira was not the club’s first choice to become their new manager and believes he has accepted that.

The Eagles have appointed the former Arsenal midfielder as their new manager after the departure of Roy Hodgson from his role at Selhurst Park.

Palace endured a long and drawn-out hunt for their new boss, attempting to appoint various managers before eventually settling on bringing in the Frenchman, who has managed New York City FC and Nice prior to his appointment in south London.

There were talks with Nuno Espirito Santo, who has ended up becoming the new Tottenham Hotspur manager after leaving Wolves, while a deal to appoint Lucien Favre, the former Borussia Dortmund boss, also fell apart at the eleventh hour.

Since Vieira’s appointment, Palace have been aggressive in the transfer market, bringing in Marc Guehi from Chelsea and Michael Olise from Reading, while they are also said to be in talks to sign Joachim Andersen from Lyon after his loan spell at Fulham.

And Woosnam believes that Vieira would admit that he was not at the top of the Eagles’ list.

He told FFC: “It wasn’t straightforward, I don’t think it ever is unfortunately. It was a difficult process in the end, obviously initially with Nuno Espirito Santo, where everything seemed to be quite close and then fell down quite late in the process which put Palace back.

“They identified their preferential targets quite quickly after that but the process takes time, but unfortunately it fell down quite late with Lucien Favre, so Vieira was always under consideration but he was never their first choice.

“He would admit that, and he would concede and understand that and appreciate that.”

Benefit for loyal wicketkeeper

Loyal Nottinghamshire wicketkeeper batsman Wayne Noon has been awarded a Benefit Year in 2003 – his 10th season at Trent Bridge

Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club01-Aug-2002Loyal Nottinghamshire wicketkeeper batsman Wayne Noon has been awarded a Benefit Year in 2003 – his 10th season at Trent Bridge. The Grimsby-born 31-year-old moved to Notts in 1994 after four years with Northamptonshire and was capped the following season. He said: “I feel very lucky to be granted a benefit as most players who enjoy this honour have played a lot more first class games than me.Having said that, not everyone gets the chance to play professionally for 15 years and I wouldn¹t change that for the world.””It¹s been more difficult to keep my motivation levels up in the Seconds recently but taking over the captaincy and more recently landing a new coaching role at Notts has given me an added spring in my step.²Cricket Manager Mick Newell said: “Awarding Wayne a benefit is a just reward for an extremely loyal club player. He has not had much of a look-in with the first team over the past three seasons but you would never know from his attitude.””As understudy to Chris Read he is in a difficult position but we know that if ever Chris is injured or away with England, we have a very able replacement who never lets us down.He deserves a thoroughly successful benefit and I¹m sure he has plenty still to offer this club in the future.”More recently, Noon has become more involved in coaching and was handed control of the Seconds until the end of the season in the recent management re-shuffle.

www.baggygreen.com.au28-Oct-2002Mark Waugh has announced his retirement from international cricket todayafter being dropped from the Australian squad for the first Test againstEngland.Waugh, 37, told a media conference at the Sydney Cricket Ground he felthe still had the ability to play at international level. However, the128-Test veteran said he might not have made the most of opportunitieslast season against New Zealand and South Africa to consolidate hisposition in the Australian side.Waugh said he had played in a great era for Australian cricket, whichincluded a 16-Test winning streak and the 1999 World Cup victory. He didnot see age as an issue in selection, and said his replacement DarrenLehmann, 32, might have five years or 50 Tests ahead of him.In Tests, Waugh made 8029 runs at 41.81 and claimed 59 wickets at 41.16,while his extraordinary fielding yielded 181 catches. He also scored8500 runs and took 85 wickets and 108 catches in one-day internationals.Waugh plans to play for New South Wales this summer, and has alsoreceived offers from counties in England to play at the end of theAustralian domestic season.

Newcastle transfer update on Will Hughes

Keith Downie has dropped the latest on Newcastle United’s reported pursuit of Will Hughes in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Hughes talks

As per The Sun, Steve Bruce is reportedly in talks with Watford to sign the 26-year-old for a deal which would be worth in the region of £12m.

The Hornets are willing to let him go in order to bring in some new players, and they are interested in a move for Isaac Hayden, who could be used as part of a potential swap deal.

The Latest: Downie on Hughes

Taking to Twitter, Sky Sports journalist Downie has dropped the latest on Newcastle’s reported pursuit of Hughes, claiming:

“There’s no Newcastle interest in Watford’s Will Hughes I’m told, and the club have no intention of allowing Isaac Hayden to leave either.”

The Verdict: Blow

It would certainly be a blow for Newcastle if they are not able to sign Hughes, as he could turn out to be a very useful squad player for them.

The midfielder played a big part in Watford getting promoted back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, making 30 Championship appearances last term and scoring two goals (Transfermarkt).

The fact that he is English is a bonus in terms of the Tyneside club filling their homegrown quota, and at 26 years of age, he has probably not reached his peak yet.

It would certainly seem to be a smart buy from the Magpies if they were able to lure Hughes away from Vicarage Road.

Perfoming South Africans in the Lancashire League

The Transco Lancashire League, although hampered by inclement weather, continues to see South Africans doing well with the ball and the bat. With most of the South Africans only getting two matches completed in the past month, Andre Seymore with innings of 63 and four heads the list followed by Pierre Joubert scoring 55* and 12*. Andrew Hall scoring 55* and three has also been successful with the ball taking 5/37 and 4/42. Joubert could only manage one wicket in his two matches.Paul Adams getting through a lot of overs seems to be over his early season stutters returning bowling figures of 5/71 and 5-61 with the ball and seven and 22 with the bat.Jacques Rudolph has not been as successful this past month with scores of three and 23 and bowling figures of 1/24 and 1/82.Con de Lange with only one match in the month scored 50 but could not get a wicket.Martin van Jaarsveld scored 35 and took no wickets in his only match.

He brings his experience to the Western Warriors squad and adds depth to our bowling stocks”.

Stoke City dealt Nathan Collins transfer blow

Stoke City have been dealt a huge blow in their bid to keep Nathan Collins at the bet365 Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football League World, who claim that Burnley are close to agreeing a £12m fee with the Potters for the transfer of the 20-year-old centre-back.

The report goes on to state that the defender is already scheduled to have a medical with the Premier League side in the coming days, with Stoke now resigned to losing the £1.8m-rated man in the summer transfer window.

Fams will be devastated

While it would be hard to argue that £12m is a decent transfer fee to receive for a player who has made just 47 senior appearances for the club, the fact that Stoke look set to lose one of their brightest stars ahead of next season is sure to leave fans of the club devastated.

Indeed, over his 22 Championship appearances for the Potters last season, the £5.9k-per-week centre-back helped his team keep nine clean sheets, in addition to making an average of 1.2 interceptions, 1.1 tackles and winning five duels per game.

The youngster also chipped in going forwards, scoring two goals and providing one assist, while also making an average of 0.5 key passes per fixture, with these metrics seeing Collins earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.90 – ranking him as Michael O’Neill’s ninth-best performer in the second tier of English football.

As such, considering his returns while still being just 20 years of age, it would very much appear as if the player whom Jim Crawford dubbed a “fantastic” defender has an extremely bright future in the game, and, with three further years on his contract at the bet365 Stadium, perhaps Stoke could have demanded slightly more than the £12m the Irishman looks to be costing Burnley this summer.

Mark Waugh, Ponting make merry in tame draw

The game of cricket is the challenge between bat and ball

Anand Vasu08-Mar-2001The game of cricket is the challenge between bat and ball. Yes indeed. But it certainly is more than just that. At least it should be in ideal circumstances. It should be about hard fought battles out in the middle, about two teams battling hard, with no quarter given and none asked for. It sometimes is that way but the last day of the three day clash between Australia and the Board President’s XI certainly wasn’t one of those times. Batting through the whole day, Australia amassed 461/7, a lead of 691, with Mark Waugh (164) and Ricky Ponting (102) leading the way. The result of the match – a tame draw – was a foregone conclusion.Narendra Hirwani, dropped from the Indian squad for the second Test match bagged a five wicket haul, increasing the irony in the last day’s play. The Madhya Pradesh leggie returned figures of 5/168, reminding the selectors that they might have been a bit hasty in dropping him.The decision to continue batting bore little significance as the Australians were clearly not going for a win. Nothing wrong with that approach, given that it would have been very difficult to bowl out the Board President’s XI side in three sessions on this wicket. Even with the attack the Australians had at their disposal, they would be toiling in vain.Michael Slater (26) and Justin Langer (15) fell early in the day. But that was the only real moral victory for the Board President’s XI side. Mark Waugh was in ominous form, playing all around the wicket. The elegant New South Welshman had plenty of time to stroke the ball when the mediumpacers were on and moved into top gear against the spinners.Sourav Ganguly gave the strongest possible indication that Sarandeep Singh is a certainty to play in the second Test between India and Australia at Kolkata. The Punjab offspinner was not given a single over on the final day. Instead, Hirwani was asked to bowl a marathon spell, operating almost non-stop from one end. While this helped Hirwani take his innings tally to five, it also meant that Mark Waugh got a good look at the leg spinner. Half a look is enough for a good batsman; for a class act like Waugh the time spent in the middle meant that he could go after the legspinner as if he was playing a club game. The Ponting-Waugh partnership for the fifth wicket ended on 113. Of that partnership, Ponting contributed just 37. Such was the dominance of Waugh. With spinners operating from both ends, Waugh had plenty of opportunity to use his feet. Coming down the wicket at will to left arm spinner Sridharan Sriram and Hirwani, Waugh got to the pitch of the ball with ease. Once he was to the pitchof the ball, the elegant New South Wales, Essex and Australia batsman had too many options. When he felt like it Waugh went over mid on. If that didn’t catch his fancy he sent the ball sailing high, wide and handsome, back over the bowler’s head. The dream was not to last all day. Waugh chopped hard at a Rakesh Patel outswinger and presented Dahiya with a low catch. Waugh’s 164 (181 balls, 17 fours, 7 sixes) was easily the highlight of the day. However, one cannot ignore the fact that Ponting managed to chalk up his second century of the game. Ponting settled in well, drove hard through the off side on more than one occasion, and played square of the wicket with consummate ease. Adding to his first innings 102, Ponting helped himself to another century, 102 not outthis time, off 113 balls with eleven hits to the fence. Although a century is always special, the circumstances in which this one was scored must take some gloss off the effort. At the end of the day, the Australians had a good practice session. Ganguly, opting to play this game purely for match practice, was allowed as little of the same by the Australians. Once more, it was the ruthless efficiency of Steve Waugh and his men to the fore.

Wolves interested in signing Carles Alena

With Wolves currently searching for a new manager, their minds are likely to be away from the player recruitment.

However, with a deal for Bruno Lage reaching a conclusion, they can begin to think about his first signings.

What’s the word?

Wolves will need to sell in order to spend big this summer but one player they could target under Lage is Barcelona’s Carles Alena.

The Spaniard spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Getafe but it doesn’t look as though Barca are too keen on keeping him at the club.

RAC1 (via Inside Futbol) claim that Wolves are one of a number of options for Alena in the upcoming transfer window.

They reveal that Valencia, Granada and Getafe have all put forward proposals to sign him this summer.

Transfermarkt currently rate the midfielder at just £13.5m so a deal for the player nicknamed Maradona could come cheap.

Better than Vitinha?

Wolves will have plenty to ponder in the coming weeks and they will need to decide whether they want to sign Vitinha on a permanent basis.

The youngster has been playing for Portugal during the U21 European Championships and could join the Molineux outfit due to an option to buy clause.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-guedes-toney-shaqiri-neves” title=”Read the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

He spent the season on loan with the Old Gold and caught the eye towards the end of the campaign.

Though, despite his immense potential, he didn’t actually earn many minutes. Vitinha started just a handful of matches in the Premier League and only scored one goal in all competitions.

His energy and ability to beat a man was captivating but Alena could be a better option for Wolves this summer.

The midfielder can play in an array of positions but it’s just behind the striker where the 23-year-old has looked most comfortable throughout his career.

Possessing the ability to score and create goals, he’s attempted to craft himself in a similar way to the likes of Deco and Andres Iniesta.

Speaking previously, Alena said: “Rivaldo was my idol when I was little. Then there was Deco, who played in my position. Now I look a lot at Andres Iniesta, just like I did with Xavi before. That’s the type of profile that interests me, in order to learn and translate that on the field of play.”

Composed in possession of the football, the Barcelona midfielder has similar qualities to Vitinha but crucially, has more experience. His numbers also look far more impressive for a number 10.

He produced 1.4 shots and 1.1 key passes per game this season compared to the 0.4 shots and 0.6 key passes per match registered by Vitinha.

There is untapped potential in both players but Alena has already proven himself at an elite club and in a top-five league. The Wolves loanee, however, is still a relatively unknown quantity.
