Fry talks up Ramsey for West Ham move - exclusive

Barry Fry believes Aaron Ramsey would be a superb, if expensive, signing for West Ham United this summer.

The Juventus midfielder has been heavily linked with a potential departure from the club this summer amid links with the Premier League.

The Hammers have again been touted as potential suitors, along with Crystal Palace and, potentially, former club Arsenal.

Ramsey, of course, made his name in the Premier League, making 371 appearances in total for the Gunners, and scoring 65 goals, while also registering 65 assists.

However, he is reported to earn £400,000-per-week in Turin following his free transfer to Serie A, though he has made just 46 appearances for Juve.

Fry does not believe that the Hammers will give him anything close to those wages at the London Stadium but he feels that if they can make a deal happen, it would be a superb signing for them.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “They could possibly make it happen but I’m sure they wouldn’t pay him 400 grand a week.

“Ramsey’s been outstanding for Wales, he makes fantastic runs from midfield, he’s a perfect player to fit into that West Ham style of play and he would be a great asset and a great signing but they won’t go to that much, there’s no doubt in my mind.”

Saturday's forty over match 'an excellent day's cricket' says Shine

The forty over match at the County Ground on Saturday was deemed to be a great success by all those who were involved

Richard Walsh06-Apr-2002The forty over match at the County Ground on Saturday was deemed to be a great success by all those who were involved.Certainly the players took the match that was played out in bright sunshine between themselves very seriously, with each side having its own separate coach and dressing room.Kevin Shine told me: "It was very good, an excellent day’s cricket. Batting was difficult especially early on, but all of the bowlers performed well."For the winning team two of Somerset’s rising young stars Matt Wood (56) and Tom Webley (27) shared a good opening partnership, with Mike Burns also making a useful contribution.Fast bowler Steffan Jones told me: "It’s been a very worthwhile day, and a good workout for everyone. It was good for me because I was bowling a good pace with my new action."Regarding the new season Steffan told me: "I’m very much looking forward to the new season because Richard Johnson and myself will have good back up bowlers to support us. Whoever it is, Joe Tucker, Matt Bulbeck, Pete Trego or Simon Francis they are all top performers which may mean that we won’t have to bowl such long spells!"Piran Holloway, who was missing from the Somerset scene for the second half of last season because of injury, and who has spent the winter out in Perth coaching Scarborough CC told me: "It’s been an excellent first week back out on the grass for us."Piran continued: "I’m fully fit now and really happy to be playing again and I’m enjoying everything. Hopefully I’ll will be in the side for the three day match at Millfield next weekend and will have a good season and regain the form that I enjoyed a couple of years ago. As long as I am playing and scoring runs then I’ll be happy."One of last season’s heroes Keith Dutch who made such an impact after joining from Middlesex the previous winter told me: "It’s been pretty good out there and Frosty has prepared a good wicket for us today."With regard to the first week back on grass "Dutchy" told me: "We have been very fortunate with the pleasant weather and made use of the excellent facilities here at the County Ground. We’ve tried out a few different things which will get us ready for both the four and one day game."Regarding next week he told me: "I’m looking forward to some competitive games next week and some more nets and then hopefully playing at Millfield next Saturday ahead of the first championship match."Somerset Chief Executive was also in the thick of things in the match today. Mr Anderson was one of the umpires and was able to have a look at the players from close quarters.

Ele vestirá a camisa 20 no atual campeão brasileiro.

Rangers urged to sign Djed Spence

Paul Robinson has urged Glasgow Rangers to make a move for Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence this summer.

The Lowdown: Gers linked with Spence

The Gers have been linked with a move for Spence, with Boro believed to be looking for a fee of at least £5m for the right back (ESPN).

The Ibrox outfit have already made their first summer signing by bringing in Fashion Sakala on a free transfer from Oostende (rangers.co.uk).

The Latest: Robinson urges move

Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson believes that Spence would be a great signing for Steven Gerrard’s Scottish champions. The former England goalkeeper said:

“Spence has done well this season.

“It’s always great to have versatile players in your squad and Spence is certainly one of those.

“He’s a great age and has a lot of experience already for someone so young. I think he’d be a great signing for Rangers.

“I’m sure he’d be interested if offered the chance to work with Steven Gerrard. They’re building something special up there.”

The Verdict: Not really needed

With 38 appearances in the Championship to his name this season spread across four positions (Transfermarkt), Spence has been a reliable presence for Middlesbrough and, at the age of 20, he still has plenty of years left ahead of him in football. However, right-back is one of the positions where Rangers are strongest.

First-choice James Tavernier is club captain and has provided more goals and assists than any of his team-mates this season. Nathan Patterson, meanwhile, has managed two goals himself and, at just 19 years of age, has a very bright future ahead of him.

Quite frankly, it would be a waste for Rangers to part with more than £5m for a player in Spence who they do not really need, despite Robinson’s endorsement.

In other news, this ex-Rangers man expresses his delighted after leaving Ibrox.

Celtic: Andy Walker slams Hoops’ hypocrisy

Pundit and former Parkhead star Andy Walker has dropped a huge claim on Celtic in relation to the proposed European Super League, saying the Hoops would gladly jump at the chance to join if they could.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has recently talked about the need for a club like Celtic to be involved in UEFA competitions, but Scottish football pundit Walker has slammed the Hoops’ ‘hypocrisy’ over the proposed European Super League, saying that as much as fans have made their displeasure clear, those at board level for both Glasgow clubs would love to be involved.

‘Absolute hypocrisy’ from Celtic board

Walker was recently talking live on air for Sky Sports Scotland and he gave his views about Celtic’s perception of the Super League and their wishes to potentially support it or join it. He made it clear that while Celtic supporters would also react in the same, negative way as the Manchester United and Liverpool fans, senior people at Parkhead would want a slice of it.

The pundit claimed: “I think you’ll hear supports say ‘We don’t want to be a part of this‘, we’ve heard from Gary Neville with regards to Man United supporters, we’ve heard that from Jamie Carragher with regards to Liverpool supporters.

“I think it would be absolute hypocrisy if you were to speak to any senior person at Celtic or at Rangers, and they did not want a slice of this.

“How often have they tried to get involved into English football? How often have they discussed the idea of an Atlantic League? All of that was to generate more money. This European Super League as far as Celtic and Rangers are concerned is just another way to generate more money.”

Jean-Pierre Papin has also spoken about Celtic’s value to European football, saying that the clubs like the Hoops could disappear from the European stage because of the Super League.

Old Firm clubs have threatened to break away in the past

Breaking away from the Scottish Premiership isn’t a completely alien concept to Celtic (and the Gers). There have been rumblings of them moving to the Premier League or creating a new Atlantic League as well. Having said that, it is believed that Peter Lawwell is well against the ESL breakaway, despite the financial gap between Celtic and the other Premiership clubs.

Walker’s claim is massive as it goes against everything that fans of both Glasgow clubs stand for – in fact it may be the one thing that could unite both sets of supporters.

For all the fan desire to be on a level playing field with England’s big guns, this is certainly not how they’d like to do it, and if Celtic do follow Walker’s suspicion and jump in, the fan backlash could be enormous.
