Celtic: Hoops make Vasilis Barkas proposal

Greek football journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos has shared Celtic’s proposal regarding an exit for goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas.

The Lowdown: Outcasts still at Parkhead

The Hoops were fairly quiet on deadline day, with youngsters Osaze Urhoghide, Adam Montgomery and Kerr McInroy the only outgoings, each sealing loan moves away.

Barkas, Albian Ajeti and Boli Bolingoli were all expected to leave the club before the January window slammed shut, but as we know, the three outcasts stayed at the club past the domestic deadline.

The Latest: Chorianopoulos’ post

Greek reporter Chorianopoulos took to Twitter late on Monday night and appeared to indicate that the Hoops have made proposals to a number of Turkish clubs regarding Barkas.

The 27-year-old, who former Celtic manager Neil Lennon once described as ‘excellent’, was linked with a move to the Super Lig during January, but according to Chorianopoulos, there has not been any response to that proposal.

He tweeted: “Celtic Vasilis Barkas was proposed also to several clubs from Turkey. No response yet”.

The Verdict: Still time

Even though the domestic deadline is now shut in the UK, Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson still has time to shift the likes of Ajeti, Barkas and Bolingoli to overseas clubs.

Should the Hoops get a response from a Turkish side regarding Barkas, they still have seven days to finalise a transfer. It would be a miracle if Celtic recoup the £4.5m they paid for the goalkeeper, with his market value plummeting during his time in Glasgow, along with his game-time.

It’s safe to say that the big-money move for Barkas can go down as poor decision, having been culpable for some howling errors for the Bhoys, but at least Celtic still have time to find him a new club in the near future.

Man City fans erupt over Sterling claim

Flocking to Twitter, lots of Manchester City supporters have erupted over an update on the future of Raheem Sterling as Barcelona reportedly plot an Eastlands raid.

The La Liga giants are apparently eyeing a few City swoops ahead of January, with Sterling having been on their agenda for quite some time in particular.

In the past 48 hours, however, some major news emerged on other Sky Blue players that the Catalans could target, with their chief executive Ferran Reverter and director of football Mateu Alemany also spotted at the club’s training ground (Jack Gaughan).

This includes the likes of Ferran Torres and Bernardo Silva, with the Spanish youngster even said to be keen on the idea of joining Xavi’s new-look Barca side in January (Sam Lee).

However, in some good news for Citizens, it appears their club are keeping tight hold of Sterling at least. According to reliable reporter Mike McGrath of The Telegraph, City and sporting director Txiki Begiristain will step up their talks to tie down the England international with a new long-term contract.

Making their stance crystal-clear, it is also believed that Pep Guardiola’s side are ready to reject any offers for the 26-year-old amid interest from the likes of Barcelona.

Man City fans buzzing…

As Barca look to Manchester in a bid to bolster their squad ahead of January, it’s little wonder that so many Sky Blues supporters are delighted with this “lovely news” on Sterling.

Despite damp patches of form over 2021 in particular, the England star has been on a mini-resurgence as of late, scoring in the 3-0 home win over Everton and grabbing City’s equaliser in their midweek Champions League victory against Paris-Saint Germain.

Having finished the 2019/20 season as Guardiola’s top scorer in all competitions with 30 goals, supporters know exactly what he’s capable of when at the very top level.

Overjoyed by City’s stance on selling him to Barca, here’s how these City fans reacted on Twitter:

Everton manager news on Mourinho

Some Everton fans have been left fuming over some manager news that has emerged involving Jose Mourinho.

As per The Daily Mirror, the AS Roma manager has emerged as a potential candidate to take over from Rafa Benitez, should he be sacked at Goodison Park.

Supporters of the Merseyside club vented their anger towards the Spaniard as well as the board after their 4-1 defeat at home to Liverpool in midweek, and Benitez is now under pressure following a run of eight matches in the Premier League without a win.

Now, the board could turn to Mourinho should they wish to pull the plug on his reign.

Of course, Mourinho’s success in English football, in where he has won the top-flight title three times with Chelsea, is a factor as to why the board are looking at him as a potential successor, but he has tailored off in recent years, having left both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United midway through the season outside of the UEFA Champions League spots.

Toffees supporters may not be a fan of his pragmatic approach to games either, and so it is understandable to see why a fair few fumed when they read the news.

West Brom must sign Okay Yokuslu

Having lost their latest Championship game 1-0 against relegation strugglers Derby County on Monday, some West Brom fans were not shy in sharing their criticism of Baggies boss Valerien Ismael and his post-match comments saying that the players need to take responsibility for the defeat.

With this in mind, the upcoming January transfer window could give Ismael the opportunity to not only strengthen his squad but also get some Baggies fans back on his side with a few exciting transfers.

One deal that Ismael could look to complete which would surely delight a lot of West Brom fans and boost their chances of securing promotion would be to pull off the signing of former Baggies loanee Okay Yokuslu.

Labelled a “forceful” player earlier this year by West Brom podcaster Adrian Goldberg, the £6.3m-rated Turkey international has only made six appearances for Celta Vigo in La Liga, all of them coming off the  bench. That would suggest that he isn’t an important figure for the Galician outfit and could be better off making a move to somewhere like Albion where he could get regular playing time.

With a recent report claiming that the fan favourite midfielder would be willing to make a return to the Midlands after enjoying his six-month spell on loan there last season, this could be just what Ismael needs to not only strengthen his midfield but also bring some positivity back for the supporters.

In his 16 Premier League appearances for the Baggies last term, Yokuslu’s performances earned him an overall season rating of 6.96/10, making him their joint-highest rated player alongside Matheus Pereira according to WhoScored. That shows how much of an impact he had at the club and suggests why many fans would surely be delighted to see him return.

Taking this into account and the reports that Robert Snodgrass could be on his way out of the club next month, West Brom should do all they can to bring Yokuslu back to The Hawthorns to see if he can fire them back to the Premier League by the end of the campaign.

WBA: Fans react to report on Allardyce

Fans of West Bromwich Albion have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which relayed a report regarding the future of the Baggies’ manager, Sam Allardyce.

According to the report by the Birmingham Mail, Allardyce and West Brom will be at something of a crossroads come the end of the season, when, barring a remarkable escape from the Premier League relegation zone, the Baggies will be planning for a season in the Championship.

It is said that the West Brom hierarchy will have to weigh up whether they feel that the 66-year-old, who only joined the club in December of last year, is the man they wish to lead the club in the second tier next season, while it is also stated that it remains unclear whether the former England manager will wish to stay at The Hawthorns upon relegation – with a summer break clause in Allardyce’s contract making his departure a viable option for either party.

However, after West Brom Live shared this report on Twitter, fans of the Baggies flocked to have their say on the matter, with many making it abundantly clear they want to see the back of Allardyce at the end of the season.

So, what exactly did these West Bromwich Albion fans have to say in reaction to the report regarding Sam Allardyce’s future?

“Hopefully go, but the whole club needs change from the owners down to a vast majority of the playing staff too.”

Leeds want Espanyol’s Raul de Tomas

Leeds could sign a potential upgrade on Patrick Bamford by landing Espanyol’s Raul de Tomas.

What’s the story?

According to Fichajes, the Whites are battling fellow Premier League clubs West Ham and Leicester in the race to sign De Tomas, with Bielsa keen on bringing another centre-forward to alternate with Patrick Bamford.

The report added that the departure of Spain international Rodrigo could help facilitate the arrival of De Tomas at Elland Road this summer.

Better than Bamford

Dubbed as a “pacey, competitive and technically-gifted goal-scorer”, De Tomas appears to have all the tools in his locker to be a real upgrade on Bamford at Elland Road.

In a bio written by his former club Real Madrid, it read: “A born-finisher with a great eye for goal, he is comfortable in any situation and lethal in both dead-ball situations and one-on-ones. Raúl also stands out for his mobility and the ease with which he can pass a player. His pace and technique make him a very complete striker.”

When you look at both De Tomas’ and Bamford’s figures from this season, then you can see why Leeds are so keen on fending off the competition to sign the former.

As well as scoring more league goals than the Leeds marksman this campaign (16 to 14), De Tomas’ underlying numbers in all the key attacking areas are far better than Bamford.

As per Sofascore, the Spaniard has missed far fewer big chances than Bamford despite playing the same number of league games, and also averages more key passes, more dribbles and more crosses per match.

The £9m-rated De Tomas appears to be the kind of perfect all-round striker with whom Bielsa would surely enjoy working at Elland Road, and it’s exactly why Victor Orta could sign a real upgrade on Leeds’ current number nine.

Meanwhile, Leeds could sign a perfect midfield partner for Kalvin Phillips in this star…

Newcastle transfer news on Karl Darlow

Karl Darlow could now be the first out of the door at Newcastle United in the summer as some transfer news has emerged.

The Lowdown: Darlow out of favour

The 31-year-old has become out of favour once again at St James’ Park this season, having made just eight appearances in total in the Premier League and none since November (Transfermarkt).

This is in contrast to last term, when he played bench after some impressive performances.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Sky Sports pundit Matt Murray thought that Darlow was ‘absolutely awesome’ in 2020/21 and even suggested that the goalkeeping spot was ‘his shirt to lose’, while former Tottenham Hotspur and England international goalkeeper Paul Robinson hailed him as ‘exceptional’.

However, he seems to have lost his place again to Dubravka under Eddie Howe.

The Latest: Darlow eyed by Boro

As per The Sun, Middlesbrough are now eyeing Darlow as their new number one ahead of the summer transfer window.

They are also looking at Leicester City shot-stopper Daniel Iversen, but Darlow remains firmly in their radar.

The Verdict: Time up

Unfortunately for Darlow, his time at St James’ Park now appears to be up.

The new owners at Newcastle are likely to go in for a new goalkeeper this summer with their riches, as Keylor Navas has been the latest big name linked with a move to the northeast.

A new arrival would likely push the 6 foot 2 Darlow further down the pecking order, and at 31 years of age, he probably has one more move left in his career which could guarantee him first-team football.

Man Utd receive Bailly injury boost

Manchester United will have Eric Bailly available for their clash with Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday.

The centre-back was absent for the shock defeat at the hands of Sheffield United that saw the Red Devils surrender their lead in the Premier League.

Young defender Axel Tuanzebe was forced to fill in but he endured a night to forget at Old Trafford.

He came into the team to take on Chris Wilder’s side but he was nothing short of a disaster at the back as the visitors hit back in style, capitalising on a dreadful defensive performance from the hosts to pick up only their second win of the season and cause a stunning upset in the process.

A lapse in concentration saw the Blades take a surprise lead after Kean Bryan’s well-timed header from John Fleck’s corner and then an unfortunate deflection for Oliver Burke’s goal summed up his frustrations.

It was a far cry from his heroics against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and there’s no doubt he will be bitterly disappointed with his individual performance.

Victor Lindelof has also been used across the backline but is suffering from a recurring back injury.

It leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with his options somewhat limited but the United boss could have Bailly available.

Solskjaer confirmed he is fit for the Premier League fixture at Arsenal after missing the midweek defeat due to a knock.

“He’s travelling to Arsenal, yeah,” said Solskjaer. “Apart from that, we didn’t get any other losses from Sheffield United and the players are all fit and raring to go.”

The timing couldn’t be better for Solskjaer, as Bailly has been a colossal at the back since the start of this season, and put in a tremendous shift against Aston Villa a few weeks ago. Bailly blocked one shot, made one interception and completed six clearances – the most out of any player from either side, as per SofaScore.

On his day, it’s fair to say that the 26-year-old is currently one of the best defenders in the Premier League, providing that he is fully fit, with former United manager Jose Mourinho lavishing praise on his former charge after he played through the pain barrier against Liverpool in 2018.

Bailly is far more experienced than Tuanzebe and is a safe bet to start alongside Harry Maguire in the heart of the defence.

Howey backs Carroll to get a new contract

Andy Carroll is set to leave the club as a free agent this summer and despite managing to score just one goal in two seasons on Tyneside, former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey wants to see the academy graduate remain at the club.

After managing to finish the season in an unexpected, yet very respectable 12th in the Premier League, Steve Bruce will be looking to improve his squad this summer, despite reports suggesting he has just £12 million to spend.

If Bruce’s budget is set to be extremely limited and he still wants to sign Joe Willock, then he may look to offer extensions to several players who are set to become free agents when their current deals expire this summer.

Carroll has managed to keep himself relatively fit this season having missed just 19 days through injury, and Howey believes that Newcastle could do worse than offering him a new deal, he spoke exclusively to Football FanCast:

“I’m surprised that Carroll will be out of contract because me personally, I would keep him for another year, I really would. He’s been fit this season but just hasn’t been given the opportunity to play so that’s not his fault.

“It’s not his fault that he’s not played, that’s the manager’s fault because all Carroll can do is be fit. I still think he’s a threat and that centre backs still won’t like playing against him.”

The striker has experienced a frustrating season on Tyneside having been handed just four Premier League starts as well as an embarrassing 30-second cameo appearance against West Brom earlier in the year.

The Magpies are set to lose both Dwight Gayle and Carroll this summer which would leave Bruce with just Callum Wilson and Joelinton as options in the strikers’ department heading into next season.

Everton can keep Rodriguez with Vazquez swoop

Carlo Ancelotti can delight James Rodriguez and look to keep the Colombian at Everton by making a summer swoop to sign Real Madrid maestro Lucas Vazquez, who produced a creative showpiece during Sunday’s La Liga derby draw with Atletico Madrid.

Rodriguez is thought to have grown unhappy at Goodison Park as he struggles with adapting to life in the Premier League, and is considering quitting the Merseyside outfit after just a year, per Defensa Central.

The Toffees hierarchy are working hard in hope of convincing Rodriguez to stay for another season as Ancelotti does not want to see his reunion called short so soon, but face a sizable hurdle in the £31.5m-rated megastar refusing to rule out a return to Spain.

Rodriguez came out of the blocks on fire with three goals and three assists in his first five games in the Premier League, but has only created one chance and found the back of the net twice in his following 13 top-flight outings.

Injuries have also kept the 29-year-old on the sidelines for eight games and counting, after missing November’s defeat to Newcastle United with a groin issue, four games in December with a calf strain and is currently out of action after sustaining a minor knock.

Yet, despite the issues with his fitness, Ancelotti is striving to retain the £90,000-per-week playmaker and is said to be lining up moves for Real Madrid duo Isco and Vazquez as part of his efforts to convince Rodriguez to continue him spell in royal blue for at least next season.

Everton were heavily linked with a potential move for Isco during the recent winter market, but Ancelotti poured cold on the speculation at the time, noting via quotes by TEAMtalk: “Isco is a fantastic player and [I have] a fantastic memory of him but now I am not, honestly, focused there.”

Vazquez has also been touted for a move to Goodison Park with his £113,000-per-week contract set to expire in the summer, and is keen to see his future resolved in March, per Cuatro, but interest will be widespread after snubbing a new deal with Los Blancos.

Reports by the COPE Network, as cited by Fichajes Futbol earlier this month, added that AC Milan, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid had all shown an interest, while Leeds could present a €5m-a-season (£82.5k-p/w) deal for the 29-year-old.

Everton moving to position themselves at the front of the queue for Vazquez may see Ancelotti not also acquire a player who could keep Rodriguez happy and at Goodison Park, but also sign a nine-time Spain international who produced a creative showpiece on Sunday.

Zinedine Zidane awarded Vazquez his 17th start in 20 La Liga outings for the season during the weekend’s 1-1 draw with rivals Atletico at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. And, while the £13.5m-rated ace could not add a sixth assist or third goal, he was highly involved in the action.

Only Galacticos conductor Toni Kroos took more touches (116) of the ball for either side than Vazquez (112), along with recording a higher number of accurate passes (96) than the on-the-day right-back (73), per WhoScored.

But Vazquez never let his defensive duties hold him back, despite offering the game’s third-most successful tackles (4), as he relentlessly pushed forward to provide three key passes – only Casemiro (4) played more – along with taking two shots.

It was the second time in his last three La Liga outings that Vazquez has struck two attempts on goal and sixth time in his last seven appearances where he’s registered two or more key passes, to take his averages to 0.9 shots and two key balls per game this season.

Vazquez is finding a rich vein of form at the perfect moment with his Real Madrid future up in the air, proving to Ancelotti that he can offer more than just emotional support to Rodriguez if he is brought to Everton in the summer.
