Everton manager news on Mourinho

Some Everton fans have been left fuming over some manager news that has emerged involving Jose Mourinho.

As per The Daily Mirror, the AS Roma manager has emerged as a potential candidate to take over from Rafa Benitez, should he be sacked at Goodison Park.

Supporters of the Merseyside club vented their anger towards the Spaniard as well as the board after their 4-1 defeat at home to Liverpool in midweek, and Benitez is now under pressure following a run of eight matches in the Premier League without a win.

Now, the board could turn to Mourinho should they wish to pull the plug on his reign.

Of course, Mourinho’s success in English football, in where he has won the top-flight title three times with Chelsea, is a factor as to why the board are looking at him as a potential successor, but he has tailored off in recent years, having left both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United midway through the season outside of the UEFA Champions League spots.

Toffees supporters may not be a fan of his pragmatic approach to games either, and so it is understandable to see why a fair few fumed when they read the news.

West Brom: Grant let Bruce down v Blues

West Bromwich Albion’s star striker this season, Karlan Grant, registered fewer touches than goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in an extremely poor display against Birmingham City.

Grant, who is the top scorer for the Baggies this season was nowhere to be seen as his side lost 1-0 to their local rivals who pick up their first win in four.

The 24-year-old made the move to The Hawthorns for £15m from Huddersfield when West Brom were in the Premier League, but it appears his celling is at this level.

He was substituted in the 68th minute of the game at St Andrew’s and was replaced by Andy Carroll who offered something different but still couldn’t find the back of the net.

To make matters worse for Grant, as well as the rest of his team, he failed to register a shot on target throughout the game.

When it comes to passing he made only three, with only Carroll who came on for him, the one West Brom player to make fewer or less.

Grant’s accuracy rate was also one of the worst on the whole pitch at a dismal 43%.

These stats come as more of a shock for the £7.2m rated forward who has registered at least one shot on target in each of his last four starts -registering 3+ in two of those games.

Throughout the season his ‘unlikely’ partnership with Callum Robinson has been working for the Baggies who have been making a late push for the play offs.

However, defeat now leaves them five points off sixth place, and with tough fixtures still to come it’s looking unlikely they’ll make it.

Manager Steve Bruce will be disappointed with the team’s performance at St Andrew’s against his former side, and the question is will he try something different in their next game or will he stick with Grant?

Carroll had the best chance of the game and is now back from injury, so if he can stay fit perhaps Bruce will look to him further.

This may only be a one-off, but West Brom will be hoping that Grant can get his form back on track if they are to see their slim play-off chances come true.

Everton eye Chelsea ace Loftus-Cheek

Many Everton fans have been left buzzing over some transfer news that has emerged on Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

As per The Daily Mail, the Goodison Park faithful have now registered an interest in signing the Chelsea midfield player before the January transfer window shuts, after injuries to both Abdoulaye Doucoure and Fabian Delph.

Of course, he is a player that incoming manager Frank Lampard knows well, having played under him ten times over the course of two seasons at Stamford Bridge.

Loftus-Cheek would certainly offer the Merseyside club more dynamism in the middle of the park, as he averages more dribbles, aerial duels won and a better pass completion than regulars Doucoure, Allan and Andre Gomes (WhoScored), and at 26 years of age, still has not quite hit his full potential.

Southampton want permanent Broja transfer

Last summer’s transfer window was a particularly busy one for Southampton, who brought in the likes of Valentino Livramento, Lyanco, Romain Perraud and Adam Armstrong on permanent deals.

Armando Broja also came to St Mary’s over the summer on a loan move from Chelsea until the end of the season.

Even though the 20-year-old is currently expected to rejoin the west London club when his deal at Southampton expires, it seems as though there could be a possible change of plans in that regard.

What’s the news?

In a recent Twitter post from Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, Southampton are “aware of interest building” in Broja from other clubs and want to sign him on a permanent basis from Chelsea.

Since arriving at St Mary’s, the Albanian has scored seven goals in 19 appearances across all competitions so far this season, showing how much of a capable and useful attacking outlet he has been for Ralph Hasenhuttl despite not getting much senior action at Stamford Bridge.

With his goalscoring efforts in mind, it’s easy to see why Southampton would want to have him on a permanent basis rather than give him back to Chelsea at the end of the season.

In terms of the 20-year-old’s future, with the Blues having the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner in their squad who can or predominantly play at centre-forward, it would be hard to see Broja getting as much game-time at Stamford Bridge next season as he has been at Southampton.

This could persuade the player to stay with the south coast club on a permanent basis rather than potentially wasting his time at Chelsea if he isn’t going to be guaranteed regular game-time under Thomas Tuchel.

Moving forward, either this month or in the summer transfer window, Southampton should definitely approach the west Londoners to see whether or not they would be willing to negotiate a suitable deal whoch would see Broja become a permanent Saints player and continue his career there. That would surely please Hasenhuttl and a lot of Southampton fans, especially if the Albanian can continue finding the net with regularity.

Celtic: Hoops make Vasilis Barkas proposal

Greek football journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos has shared Celtic’s proposal regarding an exit for goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas.

The Lowdown: Outcasts still at Parkhead

The Hoops were fairly quiet on deadline day, with youngsters Osaze Urhoghide, Adam Montgomery and Kerr McInroy the only outgoings, each sealing loan moves away.

Barkas, Albian Ajeti and Boli Bolingoli were all expected to leave the club before the January window slammed shut, but as we know, the three outcasts stayed at the club past the domestic deadline.

The Latest: Chorianopoulos’ post

Greek reporter Chorianopoulos took to Twitter late on Monday night and appeared to indicate that the Hoops have made proposals to a number of Turkish clubs regarding Barkas.

The 27-year-old, who former Celtic manager Neil Lennon once described as ‘excellent’, was linked with a move to the Super Lig during January, but according to Chorianopoulos, there has not been any response to that proposal.

He tweeted: “Celtic Vasilis Barkas was proposed also to several clubs from Turkey. No response yet”.

The Verdict: Still time

Even though the domestic deadline is now shut in the UK, Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson still has time to shift the likes of Ajeti, Barkas and Bolingoli to overseas clubs.

Should the Hoops get a response from a Turkish side regarding Barkas, they still have seven days to finalise a transfer. It would be a miracle if Celtic recoup the £4.5m they paid for the goalkeeper, with his market value plummeting during his time in Glasgow, along with his game-time.

It’s safe to say that the big-money move for Barkas can go down as poor decision, having been culpable for some howling errors for the Bhoys, but at least Celtic still have time to find him a new club in the near future.

Newcastle receive Saint-Maximin latest

Newcastle United have received the latest on the status of star player Allan Saint-Maximin after the winger was forced off through injury during their 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Monday.

What’s the latest?

The Frenchman scored the Magpies’ opener against United on Monday night, but required treatment on his calf before being substituted as a result of the injury.

However, according to Chronicle Live, injury expert Ben Dinnery is confident that the 24-year-old has a low-grade calf injury and could be fit in time for Newcastle’s crucial game against Watford in two weeks.

This would mean that the only match Saint-Maximin would miss is next weekend’s FA Cup third-round clash against League One outfit Cambridge United after the Toon Army’s games against Everton and Southampton were postponed.

Eddie Howe will be buzzing

The Newcastle manager may have feared the worst when the 24-year-old limped off against Manchester United, especially with star striker Callum Wilson injured too and potentially facing months on the sidelines.

There’s little doubt that the North-East club will be busy this month with the club now in it’s first transfer window since the completion of the big-money, Saudi-backed takeover. However, there is no doubt that regardless of who was to come in this window (realistically), the Frenchman would remain a vital player in the Toon Army’s bid for surivival.

Newcastle remain in a dire situation as they remain in the Premier League relegation zone, sat in 19th place. Despite being just two points from safety, 17th-placed Watford have two games in hand on the Geordies which could prove significant, especially ahead of the two sides’ meeting on the 15th January.

Howe will need as many of his players available as possible as the 43-year-old looks to clear up the mess he has walked into as soon as possible.

It’s exactly why the Magpies boss will be buzzing with the news.

Everton could sell one of key duo

Everton have been rather active in the transfer window over the past few years when it comes to bringing new players to the Merseyside club.

At times, the Toffees have spent significant sums of money on players such as Ben Godfrey, Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean to name a few.

The previous summer transfer window was a different story for the club as they were impacted by Financial Fair Play rules, resulting in them only signing Demarai Gray for a relatively low fee of £1.7m.

Looking ahead to the next summer window, it seems as though the Goodison Park outfit may once again be in danger of being troubled by their financial issues, this time in a much more potentially damaging regard.

What’s the talk?

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Paul Brown had this to say about the future of Everton duo Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison.

He said: “It’s inevitable that one of them goes because the financial position the club finds itself in is so dire that they know they have to sell someone to generate some revenue.”

Bad news for Lampard

Having scored a combined total of nine Premier League goals between them this season, it’s safe to say that the duo are two of Everton’s key attacking figures.

The attackers also make up two of Everton’ three highest-rated outfield players currently at the club in terms of their overall performances according to WhoScored.

Also, with the pair being worth a combined fee of £82.8m, they are the club’s two most valuable players, showing why Brown thinks selling one of them could help the Toffees financially.

However, given how vital they both are on the pitch for the Merseyside club, selling either of them anytime soon would be a disaster for Frank Lampard and the fans.

While this could be an issue for the Toffees by the time the upcoming summer transfer window opens for business, their main concern at the moment will surely be on doing all they can to stay in the division.

Moving forward, the best thing that Everton can do is to win as many points as they can from their remaining league games.

Once they potentially manage to do that, the focus can then shift onto their summer business.

In terms of what the financial situation at the Merseyside club will look like at that point, it should be their top priority to keep hold of both Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin.

Rangers drop Borna Barisic injury update

Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has delivered an injury update on Ibrox defender Borna Barisic after their 2-0 victory on Wednesday evening.

What’s the story?

The Gers came out with all three points from their clash against St Johnstone thanks to goals from Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent, but the one big concern surrounded Barisic, who was forced off with just over ten minutes remaining.

However, speaking in his post-match press conference following the game, Van Bronckhorst was quick to play down any suggestions of a serious problem with the left-back.

He said: “He’s okay. He was just not feeling well. He’s not injured.”

Huge boost

Make no mistake about it, Van Bronckhorst’s update on Barisic is a welcome relief and huge boost to the Gers in the midst of a busy festive schedule.

The Ibrox side are back in action in a couple of days when they take on Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership, before hosting St Mirren at home on Boxing day.

After being out with injury for three games in late October and early November, Barisic has come back into the side and started the previous five matches for the Gers, helping them keep an impressive four clean sheets in that time.

Former Rangers full-back Steven Smith has previously waxed lyrical about the Croatian, saying: “When you have got him on one side and the numbers that Tavernier is producing on the other side, I think when people tell you the numbers it is scary. You are talking about forward players and strikers not even reaching those numbers so the two of them have been outstanding.”

While Barisic has yet to net at all this season, there’s no questioning that when on song, he’s one of the most effective full-backs in the league, and Van Bronckhorst’s update on him should have fans buzzing.

Meanwhile, this Rangers star was outstanding vs St Johnstone…

Aston Villa: Fans react to Boubacar Kamara update

Aston Villa and Leeds United are just two of the clubs who have contacted the agent of Marseille defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara.

That’s according to The Daily Mail, and their update has had a number of fans talking on social media.

Both Villa and Leeds are looking to bolster their midfield ranks before the end of the month, with Villa also keen on Juventus’ Rodrigo Bentancur.

Kamara is also on Johan Lange’s list, though, and Villa, Leeds and Manchester United have all contacted the Frenchman’s agent ahead of a possible late swoop.

The Daily Mail believe that Marseille are willing to sell the 22-year-old for £10m before the end of the month due to the player being out of contract in the summer.

Kamara has made 146 appearances for the Ligue 1 side and is also capable of playing at centre-back when required.

West Brom must sign Okay Yokuslu

Having lost their latest Championship game 1-0 against relegation strugglers Derby County on Monday, some West Brom fans were not shy in sharing their criticism of Baggies boss Valerien Ismael and his post-match comments saying that the players need to take responsibility for the defeat.

With this in mind, the upcoming January transfer window could give Ismael the opportunity to not only strengthen his squad but also get some Baggies fans back on his side with a few exciting transfers.

One deal that Ismael could look to complete which would surely delight a lot of West Brom fans and boost their chances of securing promotion would be to pull off the signing of former Baggies loanee Okay Yokuslu.

Labelled a “forceful” player earlier this year by West Brom podcaster Adrian Goldberg, the £6.3m-rated Turkey international has only made six appearances for Celta Vigo in La Liga, all of them coming off the  bench. That would suggest that he isn’t an important figure for the Galician outfit and could be better off making a move to somewhere like Albion where he could get regular playing time.

With a recent report claiming that the fan favourite midfielder would be willing to make a return to the Midlands after enjoying his six-month spell on loan there last season, this could be just what Ismael needs to not only strengthen his midfield but also bring some positivity back for the supporters.

In his 16 Premier League appearances for the Baggies last term, Yokuslu’s performances earned him an overall season rating of 6.96/10, making him their joint-highest rated player alongside Matheus Pereira according to WhoScored. That shows how much of an impact he had at the club and suggests why many fans would surely be delighted to see him return.

Taking this into account and the reports that Robert Snodgrass could be on his way out of the club next month, West Brom should do all they can to bring Yokuslu back to The Hawthorns to see if he can fire them back to the Premier League by the end of the campaign.
