No Gabriel, no problem! Winners and losers as Arsenal's deadly set-pieces come up big despite Brazilian's absence while Ruben Amorim counts the cost of rotating his forwards in first Man Utd loss

The Red Devils' trip to north London ended in defeat as the Gunners closed the gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool to seven points

Arsenal handed Ruben Amorim his first loss as Manchester United head coach with a 2-0 victory on Wednesday. The Red Devils arrived in north London on an impressive run of seven games without defeat stretching back to Ruud van Nistelrooy's time as interim manager, but that streak was snapped with authority.

Though the Gunners found it difficult to break down their stubborn visitors in the first half, they ramped up the pressure after the break and made United pay for their careless defending on set plays.

Jurrien Timber headed the hosts into the lead before William Saliba doubled their advantage shortly after, and Amorim's charges were unable to conjure up a suitable response at the other end.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from the Emirates Stadium…

    WINNER: Arsenal's set-pieces

As Bukayo Saka went up for Arsenal's 13th and final corner of the evening, the Clock End – home to the club's ultra-lite Ashburton Army – bounced around chanting, 'set piece again, ole ole'.

Everyone knows the Gunners rule the roost when it comes to dead balls. Their specialist coach, Nicolas Jover, is a celebrity around these parts now. He prowls Mikel Arteta's technical area whenever the team have the chance to score from one and rarely leaves a game disappointed with his work.

Arsenal, even with Martin Odegaard fit and in the groove again, created little from open play when United's main objective was to shut up shop. But the relentlessness of their menace from set-piece situations is driving teams crazy.

Midway through the first half, Andre Onana cut a frustrated figure when his angle for clearing the ball was obscured and he had to boot the ball into touch behind his goal instead. Before Timber's deadlock breaker, they could have scored two or three from corners alone. Post-match, ex-United forward Dimitar Berbatov declared Arsenal as "the new Stoke City" in reference to their days under Tony Pulis. These are the marginal gains that Arteta has preached to yield results from, and tonight they were the difference makers.

    LOSER: Man Utd's dead-ball defending

Perhaps the Clock End's jubilance at their side's domination on corners was in-part fuelled by United so blatantly trying, and subsequently failing, to prevent such events from occurring.

A fairly significant chunk of the Red Devils' warm-up was spent on defending set-pieces. Crosses came in, crosses were cleared. Amorim had identified a threat, but still felt the need to put his players through those paces on matchday right before kick-off.

That extra homework didn't pay off. United were outwitted and outmanoeuvred on nearly every delivery which pierced the penalty area. Down the final stretch of the game, Amazon Prime's TV cameras panned to a frustrated Amorim on the bench, who was rubbing his forehead with the same stress levels as an office worker heading in on a Monday off the back of a two-day hangover. He knows there's work ahead if he's to turn United around.

  • Getty Images Sport

    LOSER: Man Utd's rotating attackers

United, for all of the riches they boast and all of the millions they have spent, have far too many headaches trying to put the ball in the back of the net. Here, they barely laid a finger on a makeshift Arsenal backline that was there for the taking – not many teams will be so fortuitous to play them without Gabriel Magalhaes or Riccardo Calafiori.

Rasmus Hojlund is a trier, and God loves a trier, but the Red Devils could do with him being a bit more than that too. Even when wrestling and grappling with Saliba, it felt like the Dane was always going to be the player hitting the deck and losing the ball.

Amorim later threw on Joshua Zirkzee, Marcus Rashford and Antony – the last of whom was sarcastically cheered onto the pitch by home supporters – in search of a solution, but found none. Maybe that's a chemistry issue in this new system, maybe it's a sign that the club have blown too much money on attacking duds. United's links to Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, someone who combines end product with physical brutishness, make more sense by the day.

    WINNER: Tyrell Malacia

Good news, United fans – Tyrell Malacia might actually still be a good player despite his lengthy lay-off. The left-back, who has only recently returned after a year-and-a-half on the treatment table, was handed the unenviable task of trying to pin down Saka during his 45 minutes from the start. When the line-ups were announced, you feared for the Dutchman and the task he had ahead.

Yet Malacia stood tall in that battle. Not many defenders can proudly proclaim they slowed Saka down without kicking lumps out of him and tugging him to the ground, but he did. When Diogo Dalot switched to the left in the second half, the Gunners winger had a little more freedom to get down the outside and weave infield.

Luke Shaw will spend the next few weeks nursing a new injury, and Malacia's comeback has come at an opportune time for United.

Contact made: Sunderland braced for big money offer for "amazing" 22 y/o

With the transfer window now in full swing, it looks like a Premier League club is prepared to spend big in order to tempt a Sunderland star away from the Stadium of Light this summer.

Sunderland enjoy steady summer so far

After last season saw Sunderland finish 16th in the Championship table, much of the Black Cats' faithful felt that their side needed a serious rebuild during the transfer window. The early passages of the summer have seen Sunderland start their business by bringing in a couple of experienced players.

Sunderland looking to sign “poacher” who could shine with Clarke

Sunderland would love if this new striker starred next to Jack Clarke this coming season.

The first to arrive on Wearside was goalkeeper Simon Moore who joined the Black Cats on a free transfer from fellow second tier outfit Coventry City. The 34-year-old has penned a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light with an option for a further twelve months.

The arrival of Moore was quickly followed by that of Alan Browne who in a similar fashion joined on a free transfer from Preston North End. Rounding off the Black Cats’ recent spree of free transfers is Ian Poveda, who arrives in Wearside after his current deal expired at Leeds United.

Whilst the news of incomings will be a cause for excitement among the Sunderland faithful, the Wearside outfit could see some high-profile exits this summer. Both Jack Clarke and Jobe Bellingham have caught the eye of Premier League clubs in recent weeks with the duo's future at the club currently hanging in the balance.

With top flight clubs not shy of shopping at the Stadium of Light, it appears that one of the Premier League new-boys are preapred to spend big to sign a Black Cat this summer.

Leicester eye deal to sign Ekwah

As reported by Sport Witness, a recent report in the African media has claimed that Leicester City are in the picture to sign Sunderland’s Pierre Ekwah this summer. The outlet states that the Foxes' scouts have contacted Ekwah's camp to find out more information about the 22-year-old ahead of a potential bid.

Despite there being no mention of the exact fee that Leicester are willing to pay, the report claims that Sunderland could make a lot of money from the sale. Based on this information, it would be safe to assume that the Foxes are willing to spend big to get the deal done this summer.

Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah.

Ekwah first arrived on Wearside in a move from West Ham United back in January 2023. During his time at the Stadium of Light, the Frenchman, who also has Ghanaian citizenship, has made 60 appearances for the Black Cats, finding the back of the net on five occasions.

Speaking on the midfielder's talents, former Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray waxed lyrical about the player telling the press: "That part of his game is really coming along, and I keep telling him that if he can develop that physical aspect of his game then what a footballer we've got because he can do amazing things with his feet.

"He's so clever with his feet, you can see how fast his feet are, and he can see pictures."

Whilst Sunderland will no doubt eager to keep Ekwah at the club this summer, the Foxes may be able to force their hand with an offer that is simply too good to turn down.

Monaco signing replacement for £34m ace as they expect him to join Spurs

Tottenham may be a lot closer to making another new signing than widely reported, with their target's club closing in on a replacement in the final stages of the transfer window.

Spurs sign Odobert out of the blue

Within an hour of news breaking of Tottenham's interest in then-Burnley winger Wilson Odobert, the club had confirmed the arrival of the teenager in a deal believed to be worth in excess of £25m, adding further firepower to Ange Posteoglou's frontline ahead of the new Premier League season.

The winger will not receive a work permit in time to make his debut in their Premier League opener against Leicester City, but waxed lyrical about his new club upon his arrival.

"First and foremost, Tottenham is a big club, and it’s hugely ambitious, too. I think the club and myself share the same ambitions. We’re on the same wavelength," he explained in his first Lilywhites interview.

"It’s a tough ask to come and play here against Tottenham… from the outset I was hugely impressed, by the stadium and the supporters. Now here I am as a Spurs player! I’m really up for it; to do everything I can, to fight hard, to succeed in winning the fans over, and help the club get results."

The winger is Tottenham's fourth senior summer signing following the record addition of Dominic Solanke alongside a high profile move for teenage talent Archie Gray and a return for Timo Werner on another loan deal from RB Leipzig.

More departures are expected, with Oliver Skipp on the verge of completing a move to Leicester City and both Giovani Lo Celso and Manor Solomon both up for sale. But the incomings may not be over, and now Spurs have been given the clearest indication that another signing may be imminent.

Monaco sign Vanderson replacement

That comes with French side Monaco edging ever closer to signing right back Jordan Teze from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth £9m. It comes amid rumoured Spurs interest in current Monaco right back Vanderson, with recent suggestions that Ange Postecoglou's side are even preparing a bid for the defender.

Though Vanderson still has four years left on his £49,500 per week deal in the south of France, an exit has been strongly mooted this summer.

As per Foot Mercato [Via Sport Witness], the Rouge et Blanc now expect the departure of the defender, with Brazilian sources suggesting that the Lilywhites are preparing a 32m euro (£27.2m) offer to take him to north London.

It may not be enough to convince them to part ways with the Brazilian, with reports earlier this summer suggesting that Monaco were holding out for 40m euros (£34m), though given that they have now signed a replacement they may well be more willing to compromise.

Any potential move to Spurs would likely spell the end of Djed Spence at the club despite Postecoglou revealing that he had been impressed by the defender in pre-season and expected him to stay, with Pedro Porro clearly the Australian's first choice at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Ahead of the documentary 'Tricks, Cheats, Deception – The Million Dollar Business with Football Talents' being released on Sunday, it has been claimed that the German international is four years older than his apparent age of 20. Moreover, the documentary posits that his real name is different and that his father, Joseph Moukoko, is not actually his biological parent. Now, Dortmund have given their take on the matter.

  • WHAT BORUSSIA DORTMUND SAID

Dortmund told : "In the case of Youssoufa Moukoko, the biological parents and the date of birth are derived from official identification documents and birth certificates issued by a German authority. These documents are still valid today and are the basis for playing authorizations and permits for clubs, regardless of whether they are domestic or foreign, and of course also for association teams such as the German U21 national team. Please also note that both the player and the biological parents identified in the above-mentioned documents have declared to us and, in the case of the parents, even to third parties through affidavits in the context of legal proceedings that the information contained in the aforementioned official documents is correct. This factual status is of course decisive for us, the DFB, and the player's current club."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

In the documentary, aired by German channel , the man claiming to be Joseph Moukoko reportedly confessed to falsifying documents to present the striker – currently on loan at Nice – as his son and reduce his official age.

He said, via : "We did it so he could have better opportunities in European football."

The publication adds these revelations could suggest he exceeded the age limit in youth competitions, including Germany's Under-21 European Championship triumph in 2021. The veracity of the documentary is yet to be revealed, however.

Southampton targeting move for "brilliant" £20k-a-week Premier League ace

Southampton are eyeing a late summer move for a "brilliant" Premier League player, according to a report from journalist Darren Witcoop.

Southampton transfer news

Saints supporters will be delighted with some of the transfer business the club have completed this summer, including bringing in Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes on permanent deals, but they will still want further signings to come in this month.

One new report has claimed that Mateus Fernandes is closing in on a move to St Mary's Stadium, with the Sporting CP midfielder coming in as an exciting young addition. Still only 20, he has represented Portugal at youth team level and could be seen as an eye-catching acquisition for many years to come.

Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas has also been mentioned as a summer option for Southampton, as Russell Martin looks to sign an upgrade on Alex McCarthy between the sticks. The Englishman has been a good servant for the south coast club, but it has to be argued that he isn't at the level required to be a Premier League starter week in, week out.

Saints are also thought to have submitted an offer for young Antwerp midfielder Mandela Keita, as they look to add more options in the middle of the park.

Southampton keen on "brilliant" Premier League ace

Taking to X, Witcoop claimed that Southampton are keen on a move for Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele before the end of the month, with his ball-playing expertise potentially an ideal fit.

Steele could be a great signing for Saints, not only because of his vast experience, but also due to the fact that he is renowned for being good with his feet – something that is so important under Martin, given his style of play.

The 34-year-old started Brighton's 3-0 win away to Everton on Saturday afternoon, enjoying a 90% pass completion rate at Goodison Park, and Graham Potter heaped praise on him during his time as manager of the Seagulls.

"I think his role around the club, his role in the dressing room, his role with the boys has been brilliant. I’ve got to say that he is very supportive of them, he has been really supportive of Rob. He puts his own personal ambition to one side for the team which is not so easy to do and is actually quite rare. I have the utmost respect for Jason in that regard."

Tottenham raced into a 3-0 lead shortly after half-time, leaving United in a precarious position. However, two quick goals in a seven-minute spell gave the Red Devils a lifeline and shifted the momentum back in their favour. Despite their spirited effort to stage a comeback, United ultimately fell short, conceding a decisive fourth goal to Son Heung-min to bow out of the Carabao Cup, with Jonny Evans' late header a mere consolation at the end of the night.

    WHAT AMORIM SAID

Amorim attributed his team’s defeat to a lack of cohesion in the first 10 minutes of the second half and told : "We disconnect in the beginning of the second half, it was a tough moment for us, like 10 minutes. And then we return, I think we did a great job. I think if you look at the game, I think we were the best team but they [Spurs] were more clinical. We lost the game but the fight from the lads was really important for me."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

With a mountain to climb, United pressed relentlessly, showing glimpses of control and attacking intent, but their efforts turned out to be too little and too late. Amorim focussed on the challenges his team faced in that gruelling 10 minutes after half-time and said: "In games like this, we have to maintain long possession right after conceding. Instead, we started losing the ball and making poor passes in the build-up, which left us exposed. We became nervous during that period, but eventually, we regained composure. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to turn things around."

Time to go: O’Neil must sell Wolves man who earns more than Cunha & Gomes

Wolverhampton Wanderers' recruitment has seen them travel far and wide in recent times, with the club shifting their focus to South American talents over the last couple of transfer windows.

This summer alone, they completed deals for Brazilians Andre and Pedro Lima, aiming to sign talented youngsters at a bargain price, making an impact on the first team before potentially leaving for a hefty profit.

Santiago Bueno is another example, with the Uruguayan centre-back joining the club from Girona last summer after an impressive stint with the Spanish outfit in LaLiga, which saw him make 34 league appearances in 2022/23.

Santiago Bueno

The aforementioned duo will be hoping to make an immediate impact in the Premier League this season, helping Gary O’Neil’s side push for a top half finish during the 2024/25 campaign.

Andre and Lima will be looking to follow in the footsteps of another Brazilian duo in the club’s first team who have hugely impressed after their respective moves to Molineux.

Cunha and Gomes’ stats at Wolves

Forward Matheus Cunha to this day remains the club’s record signing, joining back in 2022 from Atlético Madrid for a reported £44m.

Cunha

The 25-year-old originally moved on loan with an obligation to buy, with Cunha enjoying the best goalscoring campaign of his career last season, registering 14 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions.

He’s often provided that moment of magic in the final third, as demonstrated in the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground last season.

As for Joao Gomes, he’s enjoyed a phenomenal start to life in England after his £15m move to the West Midlands, joining from Brazilian outfit Flamengo during the January window in 2023.

The 23-year-old has since featured 48 times in the Premier League, scoring three times, including a double against Tottenham Hotspur during the 2-1 victory in North London last season.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes vs Arsenal

His subsequent form has seen him linked with the likes of Spurs and Liverpool – an indication of how impressive he’s been since making the move to Molineux.

However, another big-money move by the club hasn’t worked out anywhere near as well, with boss O’Neil needing to move on one current first-team member at the next opportunity.

How much Cunha and Gomes earn in 2024

Just a couple of years ago, Wolves splashed £27.5m on a deal to sign Portuguese forward Gonçalo Guedes from Spanish side Valencia on a five-year-deal.

Goncalo Guedes

However, he’s failed to prove his worth during his time at Molineux, scoring just one Premier League goal before returning to boyhood club Benfica for the second half of the 2022/23 campaign.

He subsequently was sent on two more loans, once again to Benfica, before moving to Villarreal for the remainder of last season, only scoring three goals over the two separate spells.

Guedes scored two goals against Burnley in the Carabao Cup last month, but he’s only managed 15 minutes of league football so far this season.

The 27-year-old currently earns a reported £90k-per-week as per Capology, a figure that is higher than both Cunha and Gomes, who only earn £60k and £30k-per-week respectively.

Given his ridiculously high wages and little impact at Molineux, the club desperately need to cash in on Guedes to avoid losing a huge chunk of their investment on the forward, with the hope being that there can be an escape route in one of the few markets still open across the globe.

Their recent need to sell key players such as Pedro Neto and Max Kilman highlights the club’s financial situation, with O’Neil’s side unable to carry players along the way – especially when they’re earning as much as Guedes currently does in the West Midlands.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Priestman left her role back in November, after an independent review into events that rocked Canada's Olympic campaign. At the tournament, a drone was spotted over a training session of New Zealand, Canada's first opponent of the group stage. Investigations led to Priestman being banned for a year by FIFA and the team being docked six points at the Games. Canada Soccer subsequently ensured an independent external review of the situation was conducted and the findings of that led to Priestman, and two other members of staff, being fired for filming an opponent's training session.

While the impact of that scandal continues, with Canada Soccer initiating a disciplinary process against former women's head coach and ex-Toronto FC boss John Herdman, it appears that the team is close to appointing a successor to Priestman. Clement must unleash "gifted" Rangers gem alongside Cerny

Glasgow Rangers will be hoping to return to winning ways as they resume their Premiership campaign this afternoon with a trip to Tannadice.

Dundee United are the opponents, with Philippe Clement facing the club for the first time since taking charge of the Ibrox side last October.

Ridvan Yilmaz, Rabbi Matondo and Danilo are the absentees for the clash in Dundee, while the Belgian could give a couple of his summer signings their debuts, allowing him to mix things up a bit.

One player who should be given the nod is Vaclav Cerny, who shone for the Czech Republic during the international break.

Vaclav Cerny must start against Dundee United

The winger has already scored once for the Light Blues, while chipping in with two assists, proving that he can thrive in Scottish football with ease.

Clement needed someone of his quality out wide to bolster his team and the player has done well so far.

Against Ukraine in the Nations League, Cerny not only grabbed an assist, but he also created one big chance, made a key pass and succeeded with two dribble attempts (100% success rate) in what was a vital win.

This will surely have boosted his confidence even further as he returns to domestic duty with the Ibrox giants.

Clement must unleash the Czech star from the very start if he wishes to break down the United defence.

Summer signing Nedim Bajrami did not feature against Celtic, but he should be given the chance to showcase his talents this afternoon, especially next to Cerny.

Nedim Bajrami could shine against Dundee United

Rangers Journal founder Kai Watson profiled Bajrami amid the links to the attacking midfielder at the end of August, saying: “A technically gifted, intelligent footballer than can play in multiple positions with plenty of Serie A experience.”

Exactly the type of player Clement requires for the problematic number ten role. Bajrami scored against Italy at Euro 2024 and while he didn’t get on the scoresheet too often for his club last term in Serie A – two goals and two assists – he succeeded with 57% of his dribbles, creating three big chances while averaging 0.8 key passes per game.

These statistics prove that he was effective in the final third in one of the toughest leagues on the continent, demonstrating his attacking prowess at times.

Now, imagine him and Cerny attacking the United backline in full flow. They could certainly give the rest of the players a boost and hopefully allow the club to secure all three points without making the game much of a struggle.

If they do perform well, the pair could become regulars in the first team over the next few months. Clement not only needs points on the board, but some decent performances to go with it.

Three points, a clean sheet and some scintillating football is all the Ibrox faithful are asking for this afternoon, and Bajrami and Cerny could be key to providing that with their terrific talents at the top end of the pitch.
