Bowling-heavy Afghanistan seek to avoid complacency

Afghanistan have the habit of fluffing lines at important moments, and with the batting something of a weakness, Scotland will hope to strike early and put them under pressure

The Preview by Karthik Krishnaswamy in Nagpur07-Mar-2016Match factsMarch 8, 2016
Start time 1500 local (0930 GMT)With bowlers like Dawlat Zadran, Afghanistan have the edge in terms of genuine pace•Chris Whiteoak

Big PictureSince the start of 2015, Afghanistan have played 16 Twenty20 Internationals. They have won 13 of them and have the best win-loss ratio of team in the world since then. There is, of course, an asterisk next to those numbers. Afghanistan’s opponents in those 16 matches were Netherlands, United Arab Emirates (twice), Scotland, Hong Kong (three times), Papua New Guinea, Oman (four times) and Zimbabwe (four times). None of those teams features in the top ten of the ICC T20I rankings. That Afghanistan haven’t had a chance to play any of the top sides is mostly down to the way the cricket calendar is structured, and partly down to their own habit of fluffing their lines at important moments. Having begun the qualifying stage of the Asia Cup as overwhelming favourites, they promptly lost to UAE, and lost the opportunity to test themselves against India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It was reminiscent of the first round of the 2014 World T20, where defeat to Nepal ended their chances of clashing against the big boys. There should, therefore, be no complacency when Afghanistan prepare to meet Scotland, despite holding an 11-3 edge against them in their ODI and T20I meetings. It took an epic escape act, engineered by Samiullah Shenwari, for Afghanistan to sneak a win when the two sides last met in a tournament of this stature, in Dunedin during the 2015 World Cup.Scotland will start as underdogs for two reasons – the head-to-head record and the conditions. They have only won six of their 25 matches in Asia, and their seam-heavy bowling attack is unlikely to get too much help from the Nagpur pitch, which is likely to be a typically flat, subcontinental limited-overs surface rather than the minefield that hosted the India-South Africa Test in November.Afghanistan have the edge, both in terms of genuine pace, with an attack comprising Dawlat Zadran, and the recently recalled new-ball duo of Shapoor Zadran and Hamid Hassan, as well as spin, with options in Amir Hamza’s left-arm darts and Rashid Khan’s low-slung legbreaks.Afghanistan’s batting, however, remains something of a weakness, with their line-up often unable to recover from early setbacks. Scotland’s best chance, therefore, is to strike with the new ball and put the middle order under pressure.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)
Afghanistan WWLWW
Scotland WLWLWIn the spotlightMajid Haq is not a part of Scotland’s squad and hasn’t been since being sent back from the 2015 World Cup for disciplinary reasons. In the absence of their leading wicket-taker in international cricket, and in conditions where spin is likely to play a crucial role, 19-year-old Mark Watt will need to make an impact with his left-arm orthodox spin.Gulbadin Naib is that rare T20 batsman who hits with immense power but hits down the ground. His talent often goes underutilised, with Afghanistan tending to send him in at No. 6 or 7. However, of late, they have toyed with batting him up the order. He made a blistering half-century the last time he batted at No. 3, only to be demoted to the lower middle order again. There is a chance, though, that Afghanistan will have a rethink come World T20: Naib batted at No. 3 in their warm-up match against Netherlands, and struck 23 off 14 balls before he was run out.Team newsHamid Hassan is back in Afghanistan’s squad for the first time since July 2015, and bowled his full quota of four overs against Netherlands. Whether they play both Hamid and Shapoor Zadran, who has also returned after a long spell out of the side, could depend on the pitch, with left-arm spinner Amir Hamza likely to take one of their places if turn is expected.Afghanistan (probable): 1 Mohammad Shahzad (wk), 2 Noor Ali Zadran, 3 Asghar Stanikzai (capt), 4 Karim Sadiq, 5 Najibullah Zadran, 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Gulbadin Naib, 8 Dawlat Zadran, 9 Rashid Khan, 10 Hamid Hassan, 11 Shapoor Zadran/Amir HamzaScotland have a fairly settled line-up, and the composition of their bowling attack could depend on conditions, with the No. 7 slot looking like a toss-up between Rob Taylor’s left-arm seam and Michael Leask’s offspin.Scotland (probable): 1 Kyle Coetzer, 2 Calum MacLeod, 3 Matthew Cross (wk), 4 Matt Machan, 5 Richie Berrington, 6 Preston Mommsen (capt), 7 Michael Leask/Rob Taylor, 8 Josh Davey, 9 Safyaan Sharif, 10 Mark Watt, 11 Alasdair Evans.Pitch and conditionsThe strip laid out for the India-South Africa Test in November earned the VCA Stadium an official warning from the ICC. It’s unlikely that the surfaces hosting the World T20 games will provide the spinners remotely as much assistance. ODI totals at the ground are a more reliable indicator of what to expect – in 14 innings, teams have crossed 290 ten times.Stats and trivia Mohammad Shahzad (1145 runs in T20Is) has scored more than twice as many runs as Afghanistan’s second-highest T20I run-getter, Asghar Stanikzai (552). Afghanistan have a 5-0 record against Scotland in T20Is.

Veja abaixo as respostas completas do presidente José Carlos Peres:

Desabafo

É dono do clube.

No caso o futebol.

Comunicamos a CIS, comunicamos o presidente Marcelo Teixeira e entregando a decisão do STJD.

Australia hold advantage after Pattinson's strikes

James Pattinson summoned a frightening spell that cut deep into New Zealand’s batting and helped bring about the end of Brendon McCullum’s storied international career

The Report by Daniel Brettig21-Feb-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJames Pattinson’s pace cut deep through New Zealand’s top order•Getty Images

As much as this series has packed into two Test matches, one element missing was high pace. James Pattinson changed all that on the third evening at Hagley Oval, summoning a frightening spell that cut deep into New Zealand’s batting and helped bring about the end of Brendon McCullum’s storied international career. On a day when Neil Wagner’s persistent short-ball attack had already been rewarded with a flurry of wickets after lunch, as New Zealand restricted Australia’s first-innings lead, Pattinson showed how speed can transcend conditions. His hostility and reverse swing left the hosts 14 runs in deficit with only six wickets remaining ahead of day four.Always a rhythm bowler, Pattinson had not quite found his form on day one and also bowled the fateful no-ball that cost Australia McCullum’s wicket. This time his pace and seam position were very much in sync, accounting for Martin Guptill, Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls before boring in at McCullum. While he did not take the wicket, Pattinson gave McCullum plenty to think about and on 25, the batsman slogged at Josh Hazlewood and was wonderfully caught by David Warner at midwicket. He and Steven Smith shook the departing McCullum’s hand but both know that victory and the world No. 1 Test ranking is now within reach.Adam Voges and the nightwatchman Nathan Lyon had played serenely in the early part of the day, but Voges’ departure to the pull short, after the fashion of Joe Burns and Smith, heralded the loss of quick wickets. In all, Australia’s last six wickets tallied only 67.Wagner’s energy and commitment to banging the ball into the pitch was not sophisticated, but over time it worked wonders on a surface given to the occasional bout of variable pace. His celebrations grew in exuberance at each wicket, as Australia’s advantage was limited. For Voges, it was another instance of applying the sturdy, calculated approach that has brought him runs at a scarcely believable rate in recent times. Momentarily his Test batting average again cleared 100, the only man to occupy that rarified air above Sir Donald Bradman. There had been more ambitious hopes for New Zealand when play began, following up on last evening’s dual dismissals. Wagner resumed with a similar line of attack, peppering Voges and Lyon with short stuff.Partly through determination and good technique, partly due to the docile character of the pitch, the batsmen were able to stand up to this examination, as Lyon repeatedly covered the bounce and dead-batted it near his feet.Runs flowed a little more freely after those early overs, though neither batsman played with extravagance. Voges offered a neat cut shot here, a checked drive there, while Lyon worked the ball around with the earnest intent of a man who would like to bat further up the order more often.Trent Boult had one concerted lbw appeal and review against Voges, but video evidence had the ball not swinging back enough to hit the stumps. It was telling that McCullum was reduced to bowling himself with the nightwatchman at the crease, and the Hagley Oval crowd raised a cheer when he beat Lyon’s outside edge.At the other end, Williamson would tempt Lyon into following a ball angled across him, and McCullum swooped nicely for the catch. Mitchell Marsh had a 21-ball sighter before the interval, and had the potential to lift the scoring rate dramatically when play resumed.Instead it was Voges who tried to push things along, and departed when Latham timed his leap to catch a flat pull shot at midwicket. Marsh also tried to take on Wagner, and likewise arrowed a catch to the inner field on the leg side.Pattinson broke the sequence with a sliced drive to point, before Peter Nevill’s attempted upper cut settled into BJ Watling’s gloves. Josh Hazlewood offered a simple catch to McCullum at slip to hand Wagner his sixth wicket, a deserved analysis. It was immediately apparent that Pattinson was bowling with good pace and a hint of movement, and the ball was still new when he found Guptill’s outside edge. Latham and Kane Williamson endured for a while, and Australia briefly pondered a review when Jackson Bird hit the No. 3 on the back pad.Smith brought Pattinson back and he soon had Latham’s wicket when some extra bounce resulted in a glove down the leg side. Nicholls was tightened up by a disciplined line and some pronounced reverse swing, before Pattinson angled one wider and was rewarded with a waft, an edge and a catch for Smith.McCullum’s arrival was warmly received, and for a while he seemed to be building something. He eschewed the extravagance of day one, instead mixing defence with calculated attack, but Pattinson did not give him a moment’s peace as Smith allowed the spell to stretch into a seventh over. There was one raucous lbw appeal denied, and one catch turned down after replays showed the ball had gone from bat to ground to boot – shades of Marsh’s ODI dismissal in Hamilton. Eventually Pattinson was spelled, and when McCullum hoisted Hazlewood over the midwicket fence New Zealand still dreamed.Next ball, however, Warner swooped, ending a glittering career and putting the prize of top spot well and truly within Australia’s sights.

Victorious Windies offered place at WICB table

West Indies’ breakaway Twenty20 players may have finally won themselves the place they have been seeking at the WICB negotiating table

Sammy takes aim at WICB•AFP

By claiming their second World Twenty20 title in dramatic circumstances, West Indies’ breakaway T20 players may have finally won themselves the place they have been seeking at the WICB negotiating table.Reacting to the strong criticism thrown at him and his board, the WICB president Dave Cameron announced that he would meet the players after the IPL at the annual review in June to find a “common ground” where the “best” players can represent the region in all formats.Cameron was reacting strongly to the critical remarks made by West Indies captain Darren Sammy immediately after becoming the first team to be crowned World T20 champions twice. In his acceptance speech Sammy said it was “very disappointing” to not hear from the WICB on the team’s triumph against England on Sunday evening in Kolkata. While expressing his disappointment at Sammy’s “inappropriate” comments, Cameron delivered his most conciliatory message to the players for some time. Previously, he has refused to speak with the group, insisting they must deal with the players association WIPA, whose president Wavell Hinds fell out with them when he agreed to a vastly inferior pay deal in 2014, leading to the disastrous walkout from that year’s ODI tour of India. Cameron has now changed his tune.”Coming up in May this year, the Board will host its annual review (retreat) with the players, WIPA, selectors and the technical team to review player, management and technical plans. We want to see how we can find common ground in ensuring that the best players in the region are available for selection for West Indies teams,” Cameron said in a statement delivered hours after Sammy and his men stunned England in a dazzling last-over finish.According to Cameron, the reason the meeting with the players, which would also involve selectors, team management and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA), was planned in June was because many of the senior Caribbean players like Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard and Carlos Braithwaite would be busy with the IPL which will be played between April 9 and May 29.The board and selectors have omitted big names like Bravo, Sammy, Pollard from the ODI squads ever since West Indies abandoned the India tour. Bravo and Pollard were not considered for last year’s World Cup by the Clive Lloyd-led selection panel and have not played any ODI since October 2014. This January, when the WICB announced annual retainer contracts for 15 players, it said that the short list was arrived at by keeping only the Test players in mind. One of the major stumbling blocks for the players is WICB’s insistence that they play in the regional tournaments consistently in order to be eligible for the international engagements in all three formats. The WICB has said that the players who travel around the world playing in the T20 franchise-based tournaments, cannot expect to be picked solely on their experience and stature.Although Cameron has extended an olive branch, he highlighted that the WICB approach is hardly going to change going forward. “We are fully aware of the financial rewards on offer in the lucrative international T20 leagues, but we believe deeply in the importance of cricket to the people of the region and of West Indies cricket’s place in world cricket. It is therefore a priority to have all of our players competing and available for selection. We will also engage the ICC on this so that we protect not only the rich heritage and legacy of West Indies Cricket, but also its future. “Incidentally, the WICB release was titled ‘WICB President has high praises for World Twenty20 Organisers’. The only word of praise for Sammy and co came indirectly when Cameron described the WICB was “overjoyed” by the fact that two West Indies teams – women and men – had won the WT20 titles. But Cameron did not waste the opportunity to remind the players who was still in charge. Cameron “pledged” to address the issue of Sammy’s outspokenness and take any necessary action.”The President would like to however apologise for what could be deemed inappropriate, comments made by the West Indies’ male captain, Darren Sammy in a post-match interview and would like to apologize on behalf of the WICB, to the millions of fans who witnessed,” the statement said. “The President has pledged to enquire the reason and will have the matter addressed.”In an earlier media release the WICB had sent a thank you note to all the three teams – men, women and Under-19 – for emerging as the champions this year. “The men, women and Under-19 teams within the last three months have made the West Indies a region worthy of tremendous attention by being the best at the international level in World Cricket. We are indeed a proud set of people today and we want to thank ALL OF YOU for your tremendous support,” the release, titled ‘From the desks of the CEO (Micheal Muirhead) and President (Cameron)’, said.”The men’s team has been electric and exciting in their performances during the tournament and we are all PROUD. This is a defining moment for Cricket and we ought to thank each and every one of our Directors, Management, Staff and supporters for the support West Indies Cricket has received. This is a truly ecstatic moment and we are indeed proud of this momentous achievement.”The T20 format is a springboard to the other formats and we will use this as an opportunity to continue the development work we have to do to make the overall cricket product better. The men executed their comprehensive plan and we are pleased with the results. We salute the entire delegation on the hard work and commitment showed. We congratulate the team and management.”For the full coverage of the West Indies payment dispute, click HERE.

De Villiers, Watson seal Royal Challengers' one-run win

AB de Villiers struck 64 and Shane Watson picked up figures of 2 for 22 to help Royal Challengers Bangalore pull off a one-run win against Kings XI Punjab in Mohali

The Report by Nikhil Kalro09-May-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAB de Villiers struck his fourth fifty of the season to help Royal Challengers to a one-run win•BCCI

AB de Villiers plundered 64 runs in a 35-ball display of masterful batting, after Royal Challengers Bangalore slumped to 67 for 3 against Kings XI Punjab in Mohali. He used powerful drives and improvised sweeps to lift Royal Challengers to 175 – their ninth successive 170-plus total – which they defended by one run in a thriller.M Vijay made an accomplished 57-ball 89 to keep Kings XI in the hunt for much of the chase. Royal Challengers’ bowling attack, though, found a way to respond to severe criticism with a good display of end-overs bowling, making use of Mohali’s long square boundaries. Kings XI required 24 off the last two overs but Shane Watson varied his pace and lengths to concede just seven in the penultimate over. Chris Jordan, playing his second IPL game, was driven through cover for four by Marcus Stoinis off the second ball of the final over, and missed his yorker again off the third ball, which Stoinis muscled over the long-off boundary to bring the contest into Kings XI’s grasp. But Stoinis could only muster a brace of twos off the second half of the over.Kings XI’s chase began in sprightly fashion with the openers, Vijay and Hashim Amla, finding the boundary in every over of the Powerplay except the first. Amla holed out to midwicket in the sixth over, off a back-of-a-length ball from Watson. With the asking rate climbing, Vijay ensured Kings XI stayed in touch with frequent boundaries, particularly with pulls through square leg as the bowlers peppered a short length. However, Yuzvendra Chahal dented the chase in the 11th over. He first beat Wriddhiman Saha’s heave with a ripping legbreak. Rahul failed to catch the ball cleanly behind the stumps, and it bounced off his pad onto his helmet – which ruled out the stumping – but picked it up off the ground and completed the run out with the batsman still a couple of inches short of his crease. Off his next ball, Chahal drew David Miller forward and sneaked a slider past his drive. It was Miller’s first duck in his IPL career.Kings XI required 40 off four overs, and Kohli turned to Watson with Vijay in control of the chase. Vijay holed out to square leg as Watson delivered a rising short ball that forced the batsman to pull towards the longer boundary.Watson returned figures of 2 for 22 in a high-scoring game and had done just done enough for Royal Challengers. “It’s trying to pre-empt what the batsman is trying to do,” Watson said at the post-match presentation. “It helps that I’m also a batsman, and then bowl a ball that is slightly out of the hitting zone.”After being inserted, Royal Challengers were provided a quickfire start courtesy KL Rahul’s crisp strokeplay. Virat Kohli, by comparison, struggled for timing. Kohli wafted at two length deliveries from Mohit Sharma in the third over – and sliced both uppishly, squarer than intended; the first lobbed over point and the second went straight to Stoinis at backward point. He let the ball burst through his hands.Stoinis was introduced in the next over and Rahul capitalised on loose offerings on both sides of the wicket. Four successive boundaries, including a superlatively timed cover drive for six, meant Royal Challengers were coasting.Just when it looked like Kohli was setting himself for another innings of substance, legspinner KC Cariappa struck. First Rahul, looking to sweep, was bowled after missing Cariappa’s seam-up quicker delivery. Two balls later, Kohli reached out for another wide delivery with leaden feet, and drove to Vijay at cover. Royal Challengers were rattled. They were soon reeling when Shane Watson failed to connect with an attempted pull off a straight ball from Axar Patel. Royal Challengers had slipped from 63 for 0 to 67 for 3.AB de Villiers and Sachin Baby were forced to milk the bowling through the middle overs. Between the ninth and the 15th overs, the pair accumulated 46 runs with two fours. Thereafter, de Villiers cut loose. Aware of the Kings XI seamers’ ability to bowl accurate yorkers, he got low and peppered the backward square leg area with deft scoops and sweeps. When the ball was wider outside off, he accrued boundaries with slapped drives through the cover region. He found two boundaries an over after the 15th and brought up his fourth fifty of the season before finding short third man with a sliced drive. Baby and Travis Head added 20 off the last two overs to lift Royal Challengers to 175.
