Josh Hazlewood opts out of IPL

Australia and Mumbai Indians seamer Josh Hazlewood has opted out of the IPL to keep himself fit and fresh for the West Indies tour and Ashes later this season

Australia and Mumbai Indians seamer Josh Hazlewood has pulled out of the IPL to keep himself fit and fresh for the West Indies tour and Ashes defence later this season.Keeping in mind the lengthy IPL schedule, which clashes with the Australian players’ resting time, and a tight international schedule ahead, Cricket Australia has opted to place him in cotton wool.”Josh’s workload has changed significantly since he first began attending the IPL,” Pat Howard, general manager of Team Performance, said. “The IPL is the players’ leave period and in Josh’s case it was deemed that not playing was the best use of that time in the lead up to a busy winter. “This was agreed to with the IPL following discussions at the end of the Test series.”Australia begin their West Indies tour with a tour game in Antigua, starting May 27, three days after the IPL final. The teams face off in a two-Test series, which will be followed by the Ashes, beginning with the first Test in Cardiff on July 8.Hazlewood, who claimed figures of 5 for 68 on Test debut against India in Brisbane, had been a vital cog for Australia this summer. He finished the Test series with 12 wickets in three matches at an average of 29.33 and backed it up with some impressive performances in the World Cup, most notably his 4 for 35 against Pakistan in the quarter-final in Adelaide, after replacing Pat Cummins. He capped off the World Cup with seven wickets in five matches at a thrifty economy rate of 4.10. Hazlewood, who was not with Mumbai Indians during the IPL opener against Kolkata Knight Riders, was earlier retained by the side, and was expected to bring his excellent form to the tournament. He becomes the second Australian after Kane Richardson to opt out of the IPL but Mumbai have well-stocked pace bowling options in Lasith Malinga, Corey Anderson, Marchant de Lange, Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell McClenaghan, Abhimanyu Mithun and Vinay Kumar.

Moores appeals for more time

Peter Moores has asked for time to continue his rebuilding job with England as his future becomes the subject of increased speculation with some commentators suggesting he could be sacked within days

Peter Moores has asked for time to continue his rebuilding job with England as his future becomes the subject of increased speculation with some commentators suggesting he could be sacked within days.Moores feels that, despite a defeat in Barbados that held England to a drawn Test series in the Caribbean, his young side are progressing and hopes to be given the chance to take them into the Ashes series before any firm decisions are taken over his record as coach.”We’ve got an exciting group of players,” Moores said. “I want to be involved with this group going forward as I think I can help them get better.”I think we’re moving the right way. I think this has been a really good trip in many ways. Watching us develop, the way people are learning what is required to be successful at international cricket and feeling a bit more relaxed with an England shirt on, that has been good. I feel we’ve moved forward.”We’ll get a better judge in the summer because New Zealand and Australia are very tough sides who are slightly more mature. That will be the time to assess how strong we are.”We look at ourselves internally and think ‘we’re moving in the right way.’ But we’re frustrated that we didn’t come away with a 2-0 series win.””Frustration” is a word that crops up often in conversation with Moores at present. Frustration that the progress he sees within his team has not been reflected in results. Frustration that his reputation and his reality are poles apart. And frustration that his existence as England coach appears permanently to be on the edge of a precipice.Today at least, he is particularly frustrated by the much-repeated assumption that he is “obsessed” with data and statistical analysis. It stems, in part, to a mis-heard line in a radio interview during the World Cup.Indeed, as ESPNcricinfo reported at the time, England’s analyst during the World Cup was so frustrated by the lack of use of his “data” that he considered going home early.”I get frustrated when people say things about me that aren’t true,” Moores said. “When people talk about laptops…. it couldn’t be further from the truth.”It’s not fact and it’s not right. It’s not how I operate as a coach. If you ask any player I deal with, they’ll tell you that. A coach’s CV is his players. If the players think you can coach, you can coach. If the players think you can’t, then you can’t.”I know I’m a good developer of players. My record is good at developing players; certainly younger players as they’ve come through. And I think we’re seeing players develop. There are legitimate areas of criticism of Moores. England’s World Cup performance – or lack of it – was particularly damaging and Moores, who altered the team plans on the eve of the tournament, was partially culpable. But England’s record in Test cricket – four wins and a defeat in the last six games – is less bad and Moores feels the signs are there to suggest results will improve.”Of course results count,” he said. “But the emergence of teams and players – and I’ve built teams at Sussex and Lancashire, I’ve been through this three or four times at county and international level – is never a straightforward curve. It goes up and down. You invest in people you feel can go on and become special players.”The question for the ECB management is whether they feel Moores is worthy of further investment. The fact that he has heard nothing from them in recent days – he is, in his words, “out of the loop” – suggests equivocal support at best. While Moores suggests he still “loves” coaching, the constant criticism, especially from ex-players who have chosen a career in media rather than coaching, the lack of support from the ECB and the ever-present threat of the axe must leave him feeling more like a pinyata than a coach at times. He smiled at the reminder that Colin Graves threatened there would be “some enquiries” if England failed to win the series. “It feels like it has been an inquiry for the last 12 months,” he said, suggesting he cannot let such issues cloud his thinking.”I can’t view it like that. It’s not my choice. It’s not within my control. What is important to me is to totally commit to my job; to try to help players develop.”Of course there’s going to be impatience. Everyone wants to win. English cricket is in the spotlight and I totally get that. We are coming out of an era where we have been very dominant and then in Australia we fell off the edge of a cliff and we lost some players.”But I don’t want people to forget we have won four out of the last six Test matches. We have won overseas and we have made some mistakes. But as a group we are confident we can play competitive cricket. We know we are getting better. Coaches always want time. But it helps having a bit of stability around the team as well.”For all the money, facilities and support staff, however, stability and time seem to the scarcest resources in English cricket.

Late wickets improve Worcestershire's day

Bowlers Joe Leach and Jack Shantry took three late wickets to swing the first day in Worcestershire’s favour at the Ageas Bowl. Hampshire looked in control on 88 for 1, having batted slowly on a rain affected day, but evening scalps dragged the game back into the visitors’ grasp.Shantry found the edge of Hampshire’s most dangerous batsman this season, Michael Carberry, before Leach had Jimmy Adams and nightwatchman James Tomlinson leg before. The day will also stick in the mind of another Worcestershire fast bowler – Ed Barnard – who took his maiden first class wicket on his debut – the scalp of Hampshire opener Liam Dawson. After a washed out morning, play finally got underway for the day at 3pm after Worcestershire had won the toss and decided to field on a green-tinged wicket with rarely-seen blue skies overhead. Before play got under way, Hampshire awarded former Durham batsman Will Smith a county cap, while Worcestershire gave first-class debuts to Barnard and England Under-19 colleague Joe Clarke – and a Championship debut to New Zealander Colin Munro. The two counties were promoted together from Division Two last season but have found life in the top flight more difficult – with just one win between the sides – with both viewing this encounter as a must win.In that spirit, Adams and Dawson carefully watched a dangerous opening spell by Leach and Charlie Morris go by without too many issues. Dawson beautifully timed a drive on the back foot to collect the first boundary of the match as both openers looked to play straight. The first stand went past 50 for the second game in a row but again Adams and Dawson couldn’t reach three figures together – Dawson poking a Barnard delivery to Daryl Mitchell for 39.Carberry joined his captain at the crease and survived a vocal shout for caught behind off Leach – the slip cordon and bowler staring at an unmoved umpire Michael Gough in disbelief. The former Test opener smeared a drive through the covers and pulled heftily in front of square – as the home side moved past 100 in the 44th over.Carberry departed with 4.4 overs left of the day, as he ended his run of three straight half centuries in first-class matches, edging behind to Ben Cox off a lively Shantry delivery. And in the next over Adams departed two short of a fourth half century of the season and Tomlinson went in the same way to the final delivery of the day off of Leach as Hampshire toiled in the late evening sunshine.”There were a few nerves jangling around when I got the nod but at the end of the day it’s just another game,” Worcestershire fast bowler Barnard said. “Jack, Joe and Charlie were giving me advice and they are three experienced bowlers and have done very well this season. To have them next to me was good for me. It was a great last 45 minutes but I think we deserved it after the way we bowled throughout the day.”We were consistent and kept the pressure on them without letting them get away. Joe getting that last one at the end was an extra bonus. I think 250 will be a decent score but own aim will be to keep them under 200. We will want to get a big lead and not have to bat again but we have to see how it goes tomorrow and take the battle from there.”Hampshire first-team coach Dale Benkenstein admitted it was not the best finish to the day, saying: “It wasn’t a good end to the day but we had a good couple of hours before that. We would have had a bowl as well and knowing that if you don’t bowl well you only have 50 overs on the park. I thought our guys did well upfront to the new ball but we have the same problem every game where no batsman takes the game by the scruff of the neck.”It’s not easy when the wicket is giving a bit of assistance to the seamers but we are not helping ourselves. There were times when they weren’t looking threatening but were still not giving us many runs. Credit to them, they made every run we did get hard to get. We should have been good enough to have got through today with maybe just one down, not four down.”

No Piauí…

Porém, o sub-20 do Galo aproveitou a situação.

No Piauí, a situação do clássico é bem diferente.

É o maior clássico do Piauí.

Prolific Wright keeps Sussex on course

Luke Wright took his run-total in this season’s NatWest T20 Blast to 522 with an unbeaten 92 as Sussex Sharks strengthened their bid for a quarter-final place with an eight-wicket win over Glamorgan at Hove

Luke Wright took his run-total in this season’s NatWest T20 Blast to 522 with an unbeaten 92 as Sussex Sharks strengthened their bid for a quarter-final place with an eight-wicket win over Glamorgan at Hove.Sussex made short work of a target of 165, reaching it when George Bailey hit the third six of the 15th over from Dean Cosker to seal only their second home win in the South Group but one which should guarantee a top-four finish with two games still to go.Glamorgan’s total of 164 for 7 looked competitive at halfway as they chased a third successive away victory but Wright and Chris Nash produced another punishing stand against them to set up victory.Three weeks ago in Cardiff they put on 116 but went one better this time, scoring 117 in 69 balls with Nash contributing 50 off 32 balls to the third-highest first-wicket stand in Sussex’s T20 history.Insights

Sussex are in a strong position to qualify for the quarter-finals. By contrast, Glamorgan are likely to be scrapping hard for their place after this defeat. It could be argued that Sussex and Glamorgan – two well-rounded, well-drilled teams are similar in style and substance. The difference, it could also be argued, is Luke Wright. With experience playing in the BBL and IPL Wright is perhaps the best and most experienced player in England not in the T20 international team. His past five scores this season are 57*, 111*, 47, 12, 92* and such rare international quality hiding within the domestic circuit is invaluable.

Nash hit seven boundaries and initially took the initiative but once Wright had reached his half-century he went into overdrive, savagely attacking the Glamorgan spinners as he hit Andrew Salter’s off-breaks for successive sixes before taking three maximums of slow left-armer Cosker. It was left to Bailey to hit the winning runs with the eighth six of the Sussex innings. It was the fifth successive game where the side batting second at Hove had won and Glamorgan will feel that their total was at least 20 runs short. They lost opener Jacques Rudolph in the fifth over when left-armer Chris Liddle trimmed his off stump and thereafter Glamorgan needed a solid unbeaten knock of 63 from 46 balls from Ben Wright to hold their innings together.Liddle and leg-spinner Will Beer bowled with commendable control but the fireworks were provided by left-armer Tymal Mills, who finished with 3 for 34 and unsettled all the Glamorgan batsmen with his searing pace.Mills picked up a wicket in his first over when Colin Ingram gloved down the leg side and he returned to the attack to knock back Graham Wagg’s middle stump and have David Lloyd caught off a leading edge.Glamorgan only got some momentum when Craig Meschede clubbed 20 off an over from Matt Machan, including two sixes, and well though Wright batted in difficult circumstances he never found the tempo that Luke Wright and Nash produced later in the contest.
