Different goals for mismatched sides

Zimbabwe will remain hopeful that if all three of their departments click better than they have in recent times, they can cause upsets against Australia and South Africa in the forthcoming tri-series

The Preview by Firdose Moonda24-Aug-2014Match factsMonday, August 25, 2014
Start time 0930 local (0730GMT)Michael Clarke underwent a fitness test on his hamstring before being ruled out of the first match•AFP

Big pictureAfter a week of playing a fourth-ranked ODI team that has subsequently been bumped up to third, what is the last thing the bottom-ranked side (at least as far as Full Members are concerned) want to do? Play the No.1s. But Zimbabwe know that international cricket is more about what they have to do rather than what they want to, and taking on both Australia and South Africa is what they will spend the next four matches doing. At least it will bring to 11 the number of ODIs they would have played in six weeks – a significant number to have a proper idea of where they stand as their preparations continue for next year’s World Cup. The harsh reality is that Zimbabwe may not like where that is unless their fortune changes in this series. Not only did they squander a series lead to share spoils with an Associate member – Afghanistan – but they were also thoroughly worked over by South Africa. For now, they do not show any signs of forcing their way into the final of the upcoming tri-series. They will remain hopeful that if all three of their departments click and click better than they have in recent times, they can cause upsets but will likely have to set mini targets, such as reaching scores over 250 or bowling sides out, as goals for the series.Australia will not play any similar games within games. Michael Clarke is after a trophy – despite being ruled out of the first game with injury* – and he is unlikely to allow matters to meander in the way South Africa sometimes do. Australia have not played ODIs since their January series against England, but one can expect ruthlessness and aggression from them, even though some of it may be cleverly disguised as experimentation. From the No.1 ranked side in the world, there can be nothing less.Form guideZimbabwe LLLLL (last five completed games, most recent first)
Australia WLWWWIn the spotlightA whitewash at the hands of South Africa was not entirely unexpected but the progressive regression of the Zimbabwe players will put the focus on their coach Stephen Mangongo to see how he handles their recovery. Mangongo was one of the driving forces behind the players being swapped around against South Africa, so much so, that Zimbabwe’s top-order has become unpredictable and unstable and the team lop-sided. The lower-order contributes more runs but lacks wicket-taking bite when it’s needed most. How Mangongo strategises around this will be key for Zimbabwe over the next two weeks.Mitchell Marsh has shown great potential ever since captaining Australia to the Under-19 World Cup title in 2009-10 but his opportunities in national colours have so far been limited. He will add to his tally of four ODIs during this series and with Shane Watson injured, it provides a terrific chance for Marsh to audition for a more long-term all-round role. He enters the series with some encouraging form behind him, including 211 in a first-class match against India A last month followed by 11 wickets at 20.00 in the quadrangular one-day tournament that followed.Team newsZimbabwe have named a 22-man squad for the series and it includes Brendan Taylor, who is expected to return to the No. 4 position after being dramatically dropped for the final ODI against South Africa last week. Sikandar Raza may return to open with Richmond Mutumbami with Hamilton Masakadza coming in at No.3. Test seamer Tinashe Panyangara made his return against South Africa after being rested following his Test workload and could be joined by Tendai Chatara which will leave Zimbabwe with a question over who to use as a lower-order allrounder. Teenager Luke Jongwe is one option, Shingi Masakadza is another. They may also bench Prosper Utseya as he awaits testing over his action and give legspinner Tafadzwa Kamungozi another chance.Zimbabwe: (probable) 1 Sikandar Raza, 2 Richmond Mutumbami (wk), 3 Hamilton Masakadza, 4 Brendan Taylor, 5 Sean Williams, 6 Elton Chigumbura (capt), 7 Luke Jongwe/Shingi Masakadza 8 Prosper Utseya/Tafadzwa Kamungozi, 9 John Nyumbu, 10 Tendai Chatara,11 Tinashe PanyangaraWith David Warner out of the series on paternity leave and Clarke unable to overcome a hamstring problem, Phillip Hughes would have hoped for an opportunity to translate his A-team form into success on the international stage. However, he found himself named 12th man when Australia announced their team in advance*, with Darren Lehmann saying they had “opted to go with the spin option of Nathan Lyon along with the extra allrounder to add further depth to our batting”. Quite how they will line up, with only one genuine opener in Aaron Finch and Mitchell Marsh coming in to an experimental middle order, remains to be seen.Australia: 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Brad Haddin (wk), 3 George Bailey (capt), 4 Steven Smith, 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 James Faulkner, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Kane Richardson, 10 Mitchell Starc, 11 Nathan Lyon.Pitch and conditionsThe action moves back to Harare Sports Club which has had almost two weeks rest after the Test between Zimbabwe and South Africa earlier in the month. The surfaces can be expected to be a little more lively than Bulawayo’s slow and sometimes turning strips, with a bit of juice for the quicks in the morning. Hot sunshine should flatten the pitch out later in the day when runs will be plentiful. Zimbabwe has leapfrogged spring and stepped straight into summer with temperatures approaching 30 degrees.Stats and triviaZimbabwe have only defeated Australia once in the 28 ODIs they have played against them. That was in their first match at the World Cup in June 1983 when Zimbabwe won a tense affair by 13 runs as Duncan Fletcher bowled them to a historic win. The last time these two teams met each other was at the 2011 World Cup. Before that, they had not played an ODI against each other since 2004. Brad Haddin made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in 2001, before any of the current Zimbabwe squad were playing international cricket. Quotes”It doesn’t intimidate me. Coaching does not intimidate me at all. Records are meant to be broken. It’s a new game, it’s a new day, it’s a new chapter. It’s XI versus XI and you have to respect your opposition.”

“Michael had a fitness test at training today and unfortunately hasn’t come through that well enough to be available for selection in game one. He will continue intensive treatment on his hamstring and we’ll monitor his progress ahead of game two on Wednesday.”

SLC hopes to appoint head coach by month end

SLC will seek to appoint a permanent head coach by the end of the month, in order to provide certainty around the position ahead of England’s tour in November

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will seek to appoint a permanent head coach by the end of the month, in order to provide certainty around the position ahead of England’s tour in November, the board’s chief executive Ashley de Silva has said. The team is set to play seven ODIs against England from November 26, as part of the build-up to the 2015 World Cup. Sri Lanka also have a full tour of New Zealand in December and January.”We have short-listed nine from the 15 applications we received for the post,” de Silva said. “They will be interviewed on Skype during the course of this week by the committee appointed to pick the candidate.”We hope to finish the interviews by the end of the week and prune the list down further before inviting them to come to Sri Lanka and make their representations,” he said. The 11-member committee that will recommend the next coach includes chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya, secretary Nishantha Ranatunga and head of coaching Jerome Jayaratne.Former captain Marvan Atapattu is the only Sri Lankan applicant in the shortlist of nine. Atapattu was interim head coach of Sri Lanka for their last three Test series against England, South Africa and Pakistan and is understood to be a frontrunner, along with Middlesex batting coach Mark Ramprakash. But Ramprakash had played down his interest in the Sri Lanka job, telling the : “I was asked whether I would be interested in the Sri Lanka coaching position and I said, ‘I’m happy to hear what the job entails.’ Since that point – about seven weeks ago – I’ve not spoken to anyone from Sri Lanka cricket.”He spoke positively about Sri Lanka’s set-up, though. “Having toured there in January and February with the Lions I’m full of admiration for the Sri Lanka set-up and their passion and energy. I thought their facilities were excellent and they are desperate to keep improving. Sri Lankans realise there are great parts of the country that have a lot of natural talent they have not tapped into yet.”Sri Lanka have 14 ODIs and two Tests scheduled in all, before they play the World Cup curtain raiser against New Zealand on February 14. The coach-recommendation committee may also consider appointing a short-term coach, to take the team through to the end of the World Cup only.

Ritmo acelerado

Pato inspirado

Coach Mangongo wary of Bangladesh threat

Zimbabwe coach Stephen Mangongo has signaled the need to be cautious when they take on Bangladesh in the upcoming Test series

Firdose Moonda21-Oct-2014

Stephen Mangongo – “We don’t want to rush M’shangwe. We want to take a little bit of time, so that he does not panic on the international stage”•ICC

On a safari in Zimbabwe, your eyes will be spoiled for choice. You could stare at the sunshine splashed across a sparkling blue sky, the selection of strong trees including the Baobab, Musasa and Mopane or – and this is likely to be what you will want to spot the most- the big five. But for all the splendid sightings, there are some things you will likely never see in the southern African country. Snow, for example has only fallen once, in 1960, and the sea is a few hundred kilometres away.Similarly, for all their rich fauna, Zimbabweans are unfamiliar with tigers. It is one of the reasons why the coach Stephen Mangongo is so wary ahead of Zimbabwe’s series against Bangladesh. “They are called the tigers, which is a tough animal; you mess around with a tiger, it kills you. We have to respect tigers, especially in their own forest,” he said. It’s actually not the tigers themselves that Zimbabwe are worried about, but the tigers’ territory. Bangladesh is the only team against whom Zimbabwe have won more Tests than they have lost and the only one they have come close to dancing toe-to-toe with in ODIs.But Zimbabwe are poor travelers. They have not been away from home for a full tour in more than 18 months, and they are without what is considered an essential on a trip to the sub-continent – a stand-out spinner. That title would have gone to Prosper Utseya but the offspinner has been banned from bowling because his action was found to be illegal and Zimbabwe have been left with a clutch of youngsters who have will have to plug the gap.Utseya has 193 international caps, while John Nyumbu, Natsai M’shangwe, Tafadzwa Kamungozi and Wellington Masakadza have 26 in total between them. However, their collective range of skills could arguably prove more useful because of the variations the players offer.Nyumbu, who can turn the ball more than Utseya, is expected to do the regular offspin job. Wellington provides a left-arm option, while Kamungozi and M’shangwe are both leg-spinners, who will add to Zimbabwe’s ability to attack. They have so far shared five wickets between them in the ongoing match against a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI with M’shangwe, in particular, impressing by taking four of those scalps.Still, Mangongo is cautious about using M’shangwe in the Tests, because of Bangladesh’s familiarity with his bowling style. “Legspin is a very difficult art. You need to train, get confident, understand the environment. We don’t want to expose him too early, that can do damage,” he said. “We don’t want to rush M’shangwe. We want to take a little bit of time, so that he doesn’t panic on the international stage. We don’t want him to take too much load but all these spinners have an equal chance of playing.”All indications are Wellington will make his debut after Mangongo cited the player’s familiarity with the conditions in Bangladesh. Wellington was part of the Zimbabwe Under-19 World Cup squad that played in the UAE and he also travelled with the A team to Bangladesh earlier this month, where he was their highest wicket-taker.If all of Wellington, Shingi and Hamilton Masakadza play, Zimbabwe will have three brothers in their XI, but Mangongo indicated that this was unlikely to happen. “It is good that the Masakadzas have created a piece of history by being in the squad, but they have to work very hard to be in the team. Hamilton is one of the key players but I am not sure if the other two brothers will make it. We will see after final days of training.”Shingi is particularly doubtful to play the first Test as he is still taking part in the ongoing tour match, in which Zimbabwe left out their frontline seamers, Tinashe Panyangara and Tendai Chatara. “We were resting our fast bowlers. One week before we came to Bangladesh, they played a game so we wanted them to rest and recover,” Mangongo explained. “We played the other two, Shingi and Elton Chigumbura.”The tour match will end on Wednesday, which leaves Zimbabwe with two days to get ready for the first Test and Mangongo does not want to place high expectations on his men. This is Zimbabwe’s first three-Test series in 12 years and only their third trip away from home since their Test comeback three years ago.”We think we are a developing team. We believe we need work hard in all three departments for us to be able to progress.”
