New Zealand aim for overseas whitewash

ESPNcricinfo previews the third ODI at Trent Bridge as New Zealand aim for rare whitewash

The Preview by Alex Winter04-Jun-2013Match FactsJune 5, 2013, Trent Bridge
Start time 2pm (1300 GMT)Martin Guptill was pumeller-in-chief at the Ageas Bowl•Getty Images

The Big PictureWe knew New Zealand were a more competitive side in one-day cricket than in Tests but few would have gambled on the tourists having the series wrapped up with a match to play. The net result is New Zealand’s stock has risen significantly and England’s odds for the Champions Trophy are lengthening.Alastair Cook is facing his first crisis as one-day captain, largely caused by injuries to Steven Finn and Stuart Broad. To call Jade Dernbach and Chris Woakes suitable replacements is generous. Dernbach has surely proved his isn’t currently an international bowler and Woakes has failed to perform as many thought he might.England are now at a crossroads with their bowling attack. They can stick with their seam-bowling plan and bring Boyd Rankin in and hope they have either Broad or Finn fit, or they change tack and utilise James Tredwell as a second spinner and Ravi Bopara to take pace off the ball. They must be mindful of likely conditions for the Champions Trophy when picking their side for the third ODI.Their batting line-up was a little keen at the Ageas Bowl and England lost too many wickets that stymied partnerships which could have hurt New Zealand. A trend of batsman getting attractive 20s and 30s needs to be bucked. Jonathan Trott showed the way but England failed to bat around him.New Zealand by contrast are in excellent shape with batsmen and bowlers in form and their side settled. Both efforts with the bat in this series have been textbook. Martin Guptill played two wonderfully controlled innings that allowed freedom for the dashing players down the order. However, an attack which takes pace off the ball would test the other skills of their boundary-hitters.The New Zealand bowling has proved successful, too. Kyle Mills, Tim Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan have performed well with the new ball, Nathan McCullum has done a fine job as the spin option and once again Brendon McCullum has produced an innovative captain, his genius moment at the Ageas Bowl was the introduction of Grant Elliott. McCullum also sets a high standard in the field that his team have followed, out-fielding England at both Lord’s and Southampton.A dead rubber before a tournament gives both sides a chance to rest players – although McCullum has said his main thought is 3-0 – but England will be more concerned with rediscovering a winning formula after their Plan A was found to have a few flaws.Form guide (Most recent first)
England LLWWL
New Zealand WWLLWWatch out for…Alastair Cook has enjoyed an untroubled reign so far as England one-day captain as the side steadily improved and touched No. 1 in the world. But he has arrived at the first mini-crisis. Cook is cast as operating only within tried-and-trusted methods but now team selection and tactics may need to become a little more inventive to shake England out of the malaise shown in the first two ODIs.Tall, broad-shouldered and left-armed, Mitchell McClenaghan has enjoyed a tremendous start to his international career with 15 wickets at 18.73. He is a pacey, bouncy bowler who has taken to life in the New Zealand one-day side. He must have wondered what all the fuss was about having made his debut against South Africa in Paarl with the side at their lowest ebb of recent times. Since then, McClenaghan has been part of series wins in South Africa and now England and can look forward to a solid Champions Trophy campaign.Team newsEngland have to make changes. There is no possible case to persist with Dernbach – the most expensive bowler in ODI history who has delivered 1000 balls. Rankin was drafted into the squad and, in a dead rubber, is worth handing a debut to. There is also a strong case to replace Woakes, who has failed to live up to his billing in 13 ODIs. Bopara could replace him in the allrounder’s slot or Tredwell could play as a second spinner. England could also choose to rest Graeme Swann and James Anderson, especially if they have one or both of Broad and Finn available again.England (possible) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Ravi Bopara, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 James Tredwell, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 Boyd RankinNew Zealand, rather unexpectedly, have the luxury of a dead rubber but have already said that rotation for rotation sake won’t happen. Tim Southee should return after being rested at the Ageas Bowl and workloads of others will be noted. Daniel Vettori is unlikely to be risked ahead of the Champions Trophy. The likes of Colin Munro and Ian Butler may have to wait.New Zealand (probable) 1 Luke Ronchi (wk), 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Grant Elliott, 6 Brendon McCullum (capt), 7 James Franklin, 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Mitchell McClenaghanPitch and conditionsTrent Bridge is traditionally a swing-bowler’s ground and England will be hoping that proves the case if they maintain their Plan A. But the good weather could produce a wicket with plenty of runs in it again.Stats and trivia The last time England were whitewashed in an ODI series at home was in 2006 when Sri Lanka triumphed 5-0 New Zealand’s last ODI series sweep was in 2007 when they beat Australia 3-0 (excluding series against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh). All five of New Zealand’s previous ODIs at Trent Bridge came during World Cups. They have won two and lost three, including defeat to England in 1975Quotes”What was impressive is that he always managed to find the right option at the right time.”
“It’s massively important to us to win this series 3-0. We don’t want to go to the Champions Trophy after having lost a game. We want to keep the momentum going. Any winning team is a confident team and we want to carry that forward into the Champions Trophy.”
Mitchell McClenaghan does want to lose intensity

High Court suspends Ashraf as PCB chairman

Zaka Ashraf has been suspended as PCB chairman by the Islamabad High Court. The court heard a petition on Tuesday against the Pakistan board’s elections, which were held earlier this month, and ruled that the election was unconstitutional

The Islamabad High Court has ordered the suspension of Zaka Ashraf, the head of Pakistan’s cricket board, over what it called the “dubious” and “polluted” process to elect him.Ashraf, the PCB chairman, was ordered to “refrain from exercising his power within his incumbency” till the court’s next hearing on June 13.The court was responding to a petition filed by a former Rawalpindi Cricket Association official against the Pakistan board’s elections that were held earlier this month – through which Ashraf was elected to a four-year term as chairman.”The petitioner has a good arguable case in his favour, as entire process of election of PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf appeared to be motivated and polluted,” Justice Shaukat Siddiqui said.PCB’s legal representative Tafuzul Rizvi in response told ESPNcricinfo that the board will assist the court during the next hearing. “We will present the facts before the court and after that any decision will be followed in letter and spirit,” Rizvi said. The board of governors meeting and the AGM that was scheduled to take place in Karachi on May 28 and 29 has been postponed in wake of the court’s decision. The board however will continue to function without a chairman in the interim. In more bad news for the PCB, five top regional associations – Lahore, Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad and Sialkot – have also revolted against Ashraf, alleging a fallacious electoral process. The five associations, presently dismissed by the PCB, constituted an interim committee to run the city associations. There are two more petitions relating to the election pending against the PCB – one in the Lahore High Court, and the other in the Sindh High Court that was filed by former wicketkeeper Rashid Latif. The petition in the Sindh High Court is scheduled to come up for hearing on Wednesday.Ashraf was elected in the first week of May, under the new PCB constitution that replaced the system of appointing the PCB chairman by the patron of the board, the president of Pakistan. It was the first election of a PCB chairman. He was one of the two candidates – the other being former Lahore Stock Exchange chairman Aftab Ahmad Khan – recommended by the patron and then interviewed by the nomination committee. The committee then unanimously recommended Ashraf for the chairman’s post, before the board of governors unanimously endorsed him.As per the new constitution, the board of governors was restructured to include ten members – five regional representatives on the basis of rotation and five representatives of service organisations and departments – with voting rights. Of the ten, PCB was able to appoint nine, all of whom voted in favour of Ashraf’s nomination. However, there was no representation from Punjab, Pakistan’s largest province with 60% of country’s population, while two new regions without any first-class team – Larkana and Dera Murad Jamali – were drafted in to the board. The process was conducted without any prior announcement, the PCB revealing the appointment through a press release. The PCB’s new constitution was produced as a result of the 2011 ICC directive, which required that its member boards become autonomous and free of interference from governments by June 2013. Removal of government interference had also been one of the Woolf report recommendations approved by the ICC. However, in November 2012, the ICC said it was reviewing its stance against government involvement in the administration of cricket.Ashraf has been the PCB’s chairman since 2011, previously working under the old constitution, under which he was appointed for an indefinite period by the patron, President Asif Ali Zardari.

E a saga são-paulina continua.

Timão volta a sonhar

West Indies seek home advantage in opener

ESPNcricinfo previews the first match of the West Indies tri-series between West Indies and Sri Lanka

The Preview by Devashish Fuloria27-Jun-2013Match FactsFriday, June 28
Start time 0930 (1430 GMT, 2000 IST)The crowd will be behind Dwayne Bravo as he leads the team for the first time at home•WICB Media/Randy Brooks Photo

The Big PictureIdeally, West Indies and Sri Lanka should have been playing a Test series at the moment, but economic forces have meant that not only have the Tests been scrapped, but a third participant – India – has joined to make it a tripartite ODI competition. It’s not all gloom though. A triangular competition can produce more twists and turns than a monotonous five-match series and a closely-contested first match between these two contrasting teams could be the caffeine kick the fans in the subcontinent need to follow a series being played halfway across the planet. For Sri Lanka, Tests or no Tests, it’s a big tour. It’s not often that they travel to the western edge of the cricketing world – this is only their sixth trip to the Caribbean, including the 2007 World Cup – and the last time they were here five years ago, they drew the Test series 1-1 but failed to win anything in the three-match ODI series. A team in transition, Sri Lanka have had mixed results this year under the new leadership of Angelo Mathews. The big positive came in Australia where they drew the five-match series, but they suffered a setback at home soon after, failing to win the ODI series against Bangladesh. They found their A-game during the Champions Trophy, making it to yet another semi-final of a big tournament, before bowing out to India. That run in England was largely based on their senior players repeatedly leading the team to safety. What was keenly awaited, but never came in England, was an innings, a spell, or a moment of brilliance from the new generation of Sri Lankan cricketers. Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Lahiru Thirimanne, Kusal Perera, Shamida Eranga – the list is full of promise that is yet to show its worth. In this series, on the slow-low pitches of the Caribbean, against two tough opponents and away from the peering eyes of the media, they have a glorious opportunity to make some progress.West Indies are a strong side in limited-overs, or so it seems because of the presence of a number of power-packed players. However, most of these players have earned their reputations playing in faraway lands for an assortment of teams. The truth is, West Indies, much like Sri Lanka’s younger generation, has teased with sporadic flashes of brilliance for far too long. Yes, they won the T20 World Cup, but soon after they lost an ODI series in Bangladesh, before Australia blanked them in a five-match series. They were at touching distance of a semi-final place in the Champions Trophy, but even there, they didn’t impose themselves with either bat or ball. One silver lining for them is that they have tasted some success in home conditions. However, given the strength of the other two teams, West Indies won’t mind considering themselves underdogs.Form guide (Most recent first, last five completed matches)
West Indies TLWWW
Sri Lanka LWWLLIn the spotlightUpul Tharanga was a regular in the side after making his debut in 2005, but lean returns in 2011-12 and the rise in the reputation of Perera, saw the latter edge Tharanga out for the home series against Bangladesh. A sparkling debut by Perera meant Tharanga was left waiting for an opening in the side, which has now come due to Tillakaratne Dilshan’s injury. Tharanga can take encouragement from the fact that there are places in the batting order still up for grabs – Perera’s form has disappeared too – and that there are at least four matches to make his case. The appointment of Dwayne Bravo as the captain of the ODI side raised a few eyebrows around the world, but Bravo brushed doubts aside saying it was part of rotation policy. He promised proactive captaincy with ‘strange’ tactics before the start of the Champions Trophy, but the team missed out on a semi-final spot when Kieron Pollard lost his wicket off what proved to be the last ball of the innings. Bravo was at the non-striker’s end then and walked off dejected. However, having spent some time in England as a leader, Bravo has a chance to establish his style of leadership in home conditions.Team newsMathews had said the injury to Dilshan would be an opportunity for others to step up and the most likely player to lend solidity at the top could be Tharanga. Although the pitches in the Caribbean are not going to be markedly different from the ones laid out in England this season, Sri Lanka could include either Sachithra Senanayake or Ajantha Mendis or both in their squad.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Upul Tharanga, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Angelo Mathews (capt), 6 Dinesh Chandimal, 7 Lahiru Thirimanne, 8 Ajantha Mendis, 9 Sachithra Senanayake, 10 Nuwan Kulasekara, 11 Lasith MalingaWest Indies settled into a combination that worked for them in England after the suspension of Denesh Ramdin. Although Ramdin is available for selection, West Indies are unlikely to disturb that arrangement, which means that Darren Sammy is likely to remain in the team while Johnson Charles will keep wickets.West Indies (probable): 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Johnson Charles (wk), 3 Devon Smith, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Darren Bravo, 6 Dwayne Bravo (capt), 7 Kieron Pollard, 8 Darren Sammy, 9 Sunil Narine, 10 Tino Best/Kemar Roach, 11 Ravi RampaulPitch and conditionsWet weather is expected to further interfere with the cricket. However, the warmer temperatures and the subcontinent-like pitch conditions will suit Sri Lanka’s game.Stats and triviaUpul Tharanga is 46 runs short of completing 5000 runs in ODIs. He has scored 12 centuries and his average is marginally better than Mahela Jayawardene’s. West Indies’ head-to-head record against Sri Lanka at home stands at 4-4 Only two batsmen – Brian Lara and Sanath Jayasuriya – have scored hundreds in Sri Lanka-West Indies matches in the West Indies.Quotes”It’s to put those little mistakes that we made in England away. We felt we had a good opportunity to win that tournament and we want to win this one and prove ourselves right.”
“West Indies and India are two very good teams in the shorter format of the game and I think that we really need to play some good cricket to win against them.”

Agora, o adversário será o Melgar (PER), às 19h15, no Allianz Parque.
