Yorkshire avoid over-rate penalty

England Lions opener Adam Lyth hit his third half-century of the season as Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire played out a draw on a rain-affected day at Trent Bridge

07-May-2011
ScorecardEngland Lions opener Adam Lyth hit his third half-century of the season as Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire played out a draw on a rain-affected day at Trent Bridge. With Yorkshire 17 without loss in their second innings and 123 ahead at the start of the day, heavy showers wiped out the morning session and ended any hopes either side might be able to force victory.Play began at 1.20pm and with little riding on the day’s play, Lyth took the opportunity to hit 52 from 114 balls with six fours before pulling Steven Mullaney straight to the waiting Mark Wagh at deep square leg. Lyth’s opening partner Joe Sayers had reached 45 when he was bowled by a spinning delivery from Samit Patel and in soporific batting conditions Yorkshire declared soon after tea on 113 for two, Joe Root unbeaten on nine and Andrew Gale six not out.Nottinghamshire theoretically had 24 overs to chase a target of 220 but chose to take the 10 points for the draw. Yorkshire, facing a points deduction because of their slow over-rate, opened the bowling with the spin of Adil Rashid and Root to get their over rate back on par. They managed to do this in the 13 overs that were bowled before stumps were drawn at 5pm, Mark Wagh finishing 25 not out and Neil Edwards undefeated on 6. The result leaves Nottinghamshire in second place in Division One on 73 points, one behind leaders Lancashire, while Yorkshire are sixth with 46 points.Given the position of the match midway through Nottinghamshire’s first innings and with many of their bowlers hit by injury, the hosts will be pleased to have avoided defeat. They were dealt a further blow overnight by the news that talented batsman Alex Hales had suffered a broken jaw when he was hit by an Ajmal Shahzad bouncer, which will put the 22-year-old out until at least June. But they will head to Hove next week to take on Sussex boosted by the availability of England bowlers Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann.

Cassiano: Não cheguei a traçar metas.

Amir confirms playing for Surrey club

Mohammad Amir, the banned Pakistan fast bowler, has confirmed that he played for Addington in a Surrey Cricket League Division One match on June 4

Mohammad Amir: “I was informed that I was fine to play”•AFP

Mohammad Amir, the banned Pakistan fast bowler, has confirmed that he played for Addington in a Surrey Cricket League Division One match on June 4 but said that he took part only because he was told playing would not violate his ICC ban. His comments come in the wake of revelations in the that the ICC is investigating whether he violated his five-year ban for spot-fixing by turning out for Addington.”I was informed by club representatives before the game that it was a friendly match, being played on a privately owned cricket ground,” Amir told . “I asked the club representatives if the match fell under the jurisdiction of the ECB and they informed me that the match did not. I spoke to several club representatives about the issue and they all told me that it was a friendly match and therefore would not contravene my ban from the ICC. I was informed that I was fine to play.”Amir also denied that he had signed any registration documents with the club and insisted that he would never have taken the risk of playing had he known it was an official match.”I would not be stupid enough to knowingly play in a match that I knew would contravene my ban. Wherever I am going to play cricket, the world will know about it. I would not be stupid enough to play in a match where I knew that I would be taking a risk”.Amir was central to Addington’s 81-run victory in the game, against St Luke’s CC. He surprisingly opened the innings and scored 60 before returning figures of 4 for 9 in seven overs. This is not the first time Amir has appeared in a game which has had to be investigated by cricket authorities. Earlier this year in January, when he was under provisional suspension and still awaiting punishment for the Lord’s scandal, he turned out for a Rawalpindi club to play a friendly game. That prompted the ICC and PCB to investigate the nature of the game before the former eventually concluded that it was an unofficial game and the club wasn’t registered with the Rawalpindi cricket association; Amir was thus found to have not broken the ICC’s anti-corruption code of conduct.

Holding not a fan of ball-tracking technology

Former West Indies fast bowler and noted commentator Michael Holding has backed the use of technology in umpiring decisions, though he believes ball-tracking should be done away with since it is inaccurate

Michael Holding is a fan of the pitch mat, but not of ball-tracking technology•Hawk-Eye Innovations

Former West Indies fast bowler and noted commentator Michael Holding has backed the use of technology in umpiring decisions, though he believes ball-tracking should be done away with since it is inaccurate. During last week’s annual conference, the ICC – following the BCCI’s sustained opposition to ball-tracking – decided to do away with it as one of the compulsory technological aids for decision-making, while making the DRS mandatory in ODIs and Tests.”I have never been a fan of the projected path of the ball,” Holding said during a round-table discussion at the MCC Spirit of Cricket lecture. “What HawkEye has produced with regards to the actual path of ball, where the ball has landed and where it has gone on to hit whatever – the bat or the pad – I am 100% happy with that.”The projected path of the ball [though] is a calculation. Obviously it has a margin of error, [but] they won’t call it that since they don’t want to hear the word ‘error’. That’s why whenever it is hitting the stumps or projected to be hitting the stumps, they leave it to the umpire’s call. If you are leaving it to the umpire’s call, that means you are thinking whatever you are showing is not 100% correct … So everything except the projected path I am happy with.”While paring down the DRS, the ICC also rejected the visual aid provided by the pitch mat, again on the BCCI’s insistence, a move that Holding criticised. “That mat is placed there by an immovable camera,” he said. “[It shows] where the ball is being pitched, and that has been shown to be 100% correct, so I have no problems with that. I don’t see why India don’t want to use it.”Holding was critical of the BCCI’s inordinate power in running the world game, an issue that has been discussed widely following the manner in which decisions were made at the conference. “I don’t believe any country should be able to dictate to the world, whatever game it is,” he said. “Brazil dominated football for many World Cups. They could not go to FIFA and say ‘this is what we want in the next World Cup’. [But] They could never ever dictate the path of the sport.”As far as I am concerned, it is the organisation running the game that should dictate the path. I am seeing an individual board dictating certain things, which I cannot agree with.”Andrew Strauss and Kumar Sangakkara, who have captained in matches with the DRS in use, were supportive of the use of technology in decision-making, though they differed in their opinions over the implementation of DRS. Sangakkara wanted umpires to use technology at their discretion, without the players having to review decisions, while Strauss was happy with the existing system.”It adds to the spectacle of the game when the players can challenge decisions, the crowds like it, and it gives the captains decisions to make, some of them strategic as to when and against which players you might use your calls,” Sangakkara said. “At the same time, I am a great believer in leaving it to the three umpires; if they need assistance to make their decision, let them ask for that. And allow the three umpires to sort it out among themselves.”Strauss said the DRS was good for cricket since it helped in getting better decisions and did not undermine umpires. “I must admit I had problems with DRS when it was first mooted. I worried about players being involved in the decision-making process – it is very contrary to what the game of cricket is all about, which is that the umpires make the final decision,” Strauss said. “But having seen it work, and having seen umpires get used to the idea, I don’t think they feel so much undermined now.”A lot of the times the best umpires come out with their reputations enhanced by the DRS. I think everyone has got used to it, and we get more decisions right as a result of it, therefore it is for the betterment of the game of cricket.”

Trial by spin for transitional Australia

ESPNcricinfo previews the first ODI between Sri Lanka and Australia at Pallekele

The Preview by Nitin Sundar09-Aug-2011Match factsWill Australia’s senior players show the youngsters how to handle spin?•AFP

August 10, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium
Start time 14:30 (9:00 GMT, 19:00 EST)Big PictureThe ‘building for the future’ theme has been repeated several times in the lead-up to this series, but given how the Twenty20 internationals played out, Australia have more immediate concerns on their hands. Muttiah Muralitharan may not be around, but his slow-bowling understudies have shown they have enough ammunition to spin the visitors out of control. If Australia are to survive Sri Lanka they have to find a way past the tweakers, and the return of Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey for the ODIs should be a source of great relief in their camp. The trio’s absence from the Twenty20s presented a worrying glimpse into the future of Australian batting. For a brief while during the second match, Ajantha Mendis was as unplayable as he was in his debut summer of 2008, before the world woke up to his assortment of tricks. Shane Watson top-edged a carrom ball, Shaun Marsh sleep-walked past a googly, while Brad Haddin forgot the significance of reaching out to the pitch of the ball. Even David Hussey, reputed to be a good player of spin, perished at the first sign of pressure. Sri Lanka were allowed to build that kind of pressure in a 20-over game. Australia should plan for much more in the 50-over format.Australia’s spin woes don’t end with their batsmen though. With 40 ODI wickets between them, Xavier Doherty, Steven Smith and David Hussey won’t give Sri Lanka sleepless nights, but their faster colleagues could make up for their inexperience. Brett Lee has been around long enough to carry this attack, while Doug Bollinger is an exciting addition to the side, given his IPL exploits in similar conditions. Add Mitchell Johnson’s fire and John Hastings’ variations to the mix, and you are looking at a fairly well-rounded seam arsenal. The hosts’ ability to counter the fast bowlers could be decisive, with the series promising to evolve into a contest between Sri Lanka’s spin and Australia’s pace.Form guide (Most recent first)
Sri Lanka WLLWW
Australia WWWLLIn the spotlightAngelo Mathews has pulled off incredible stunts in the outfield twice within the span of three years, but there is so much more to his cricket than breath-taking boundary-line jugglery. He is, arguably, irreplaceable in the Sri Lanka side – his injury ahead of the World Cup final threw their plans into a mess, forcing three changes in an attempt to balance the side. Mathews continues to feel his way into top fitness, and may not have much to do with the ball in this series but will be critical in the middle order of a decidedly top-heavy batting line-up.Until Ajantha Mendis’ magic show began on Monday, Shane Watson put on a display of such visceral violence that it wouldn’t have been out of place in a Quentin Tarantino movie. He clouted five sixes in a nine-ball passage leading up to his dismissal, each bigger than the previous one and threatening the well-being of the viewers seated in the stands in the arc between long-on and midwicket. It is the sort of brutality Watson unleashed on Bangladesh recently, and is capable of deciding games within a matter of minutes. Can Sri Lanka’s new-ball bowlers deny Watson the chance to go after spin?Team newsUpul Tharanga returns to the mix after his three-month suspension for failing a drug test, and is sure to feature in the XI, allowing Mahela Jayawardene to slot back into the middle order. Lasith Malinga is also back in the squad, but will sit out the first ODI as he continues to recover from a back injury. Sri Lanka had five spinners in their side for the second Twenty20, but Ajantha Mendis’ brilliance almost rendered the rest redundant. How many spinners will they play this time around?Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Jeevan Mendis / Suraj Randiv, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Suranga Lakmal / Thisara Perera, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Rangana HerathWith David Warner returning home, Brad Haddin will open for Australia in Shane Watson’s company, freeing up space for the returning middle-order troika. Shaun Marsh and David Hussey looked suspect against spin in the Twenty20s, but Australia may be forced to play both in an attempt to delay the start of their tail.Australia (probable): 1 Shane Watson, 2 Brad Haddin (wk) 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Michael Hussey, 6 David Hussey / Shaun Marsh, 7 Steven Smith / Xavier Doherty, 8 John Hastings, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Brett Lee, 11 Doug BollingerPitch and conditionsPallekele is set to host its third international game in five days. The track had slowed down considerably by the end of the second Twenty20, allowing Sri Lanka’s spinners to dominate proceedings. If the strip retains that character for the first ODI, both captains will be anxious to bat first.Stats and trivia These teams have played 72 ODIs against each other, with Australia winning 47 and Sri Lanka 22 Mahela Jayawardene is set to play his 343rd ODI for Sri Lanka (348th in all), which will make him the second most-capped player to have played for the country, level with Muttiah Muralitharan. Ricky Ponting has made 1450 runs against Sri Lanka, making him the third highest run-getter in head-to-heads between these teams. He needs only one run to draw level with Aravinda de Silva. Adam Gilchrist leads the table with 1511 runs.Quotes”I am developing a new ball but I haven’t yet tried it. Hopefully it will come out soon.”
