Sunderland have reportedly now been gifted the chance to land Neil Warnock as their next permanent manager.

The Lowdown: Temporary appointments made

Following the departure of Lee Johnson, the Stadium of Light faithful have now confirmed that Mike Dodds will lead the first-team preparations alongside Phil Jevons and Goalkeeping Coach David Preece, assisted by Michael Proctor.

Their next game is at home to Doncaster Rovers in League One on Saturday, and so it looks like Dodds will take charge for now until a permanent replacement is brought in.

The Latest: Warnock contact

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, journalist James Hunter has revealed that Warnock has expressed an interest in the vacant job, and has even made contact with the Black Cats over the role, potentially until the end of the season.

Hunter also writes that the 73-year-old was in the frame for the SAFC job in the early 1990s, and Warnock himself has previously revealed that he was ‘very close’ to taking the role back in 2020 before Johnson was appointed.

The Verdict: Get him in!

Warnock is the perfect man to steady the ship and guide Sunderland to promotion, and his CV proves it.

He has been promoted on no fewer than eight separate occasions with two of those coming from the third tier of English football (The Chronicle).

Lauded as an ‘absolute hero’ by local Huddersfield Town journalist Doug Thomson after Warnock got the Terriers to Wembley and promoted, he is someone that the fans can warm up to straight away, and some Black Cats even called for him to be appointed before Johnson was.

Nonetheless, the board should look no further than the Englishman for their promotion push.

Waqar Younis, the Pakistan coach, has hailed the selection of Islamabad-born batsman Usman Khawaja to the Australian Test squad, calling him a role model for immigrants. Khawaja could make his debut against the country of his birth when Australia play Pakistan in a two-Test series in England in July.”Now Khawaja has broken into the Australian team, I am sure if he performs well it will encourage other Pakistanis living and playing in Australia, because the system there is good for players,” Waqar told from Colombo.Waqar, who lives in Sydney, said he had watched Khawaja play and was impressed with his talent. “He plays like the Australians do and it is great to see someone from Pakistan breaking into world’s best team,” he said. “He is an impressive talent and is in the Australian squad only because he has done well at the domestic level.” Khawaja, who plays for New South Wales, scored three centuries and 698 runs at 63.45 in seven games last summer.Waqar, however, warned Khawaja not to expect any preferential treatment from the Pakistan squad should he be in the XI in the two-Test series. “I hope he doesn’t score much against us and my bowlers come hard at him.”Pakistan last played Australia in Australia in 2009 and lost all three Tests, five one-day games and a Twenty20 match. Tottenham Hotspur have offered academy prospect Tobi Omole a new contract after he was named in Antonio Conte’s squad for the Premier League…

What’s the word?

That’s according to allnigeriasoccer.com, who claim that the 22-year-old defender isn’t eligible to qualify as a U21 or youth player anymore but the Italian head coach has included him as a senior member of the team.

Omole is yet to make his senior bow for Spurs but did feature on the bench for their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace earlier in the season and has trained numerous times with the first team since Conte’s arrival in November.

The former Arsenal graduate has also been offered fresh terms ahead of next season, too.

Omole is capable of playing in pretty much any role across the backline, making him a very intriguing option for the Italian head coach and one that could earn some comparisons to one member of his title-winning squad at Chelsea, Cesar Azpilicueta.

Conte has very much tried to introduce a similar formation to one that once sealed the Premier League trophy, a 3-4-3, which saw the Spanish veteran partner a ball-player in David Luiz and an aggressive tackler in Gary Cahill.

Well, in Eric Dier and Cristian Romero, he has players to fit the mould of the latter duo. And for now, it’s Ben Davies taking up the other role. However, with plans to hand Omole a new deal, Conte may well see a future star fit to take the reins eventually.

As per Lilywhites insider John Wenham, the 22-year-old centre-back is considered to be a “top young talent” within the club and was even tipped to make a debut against Newcastle United back in October.

The young gem is also a left-footer, which will only bolster his claims of replacing Davies in the starting XI as the Welshman has largely been deployed at centre-back due to him being the only defensive-minded left-footer in the squad.

It may be a while before he truly comes to the fold but it’s clear that he has already impressed Conte enough for him to not only be handed fresh terms but also named in the official squad for the remainder of the season.

In Omole, the Italian head coach could well discover a new Azpilicueta.

O Flamengo esteve muito próximo de anunciar Walace como o segundo reforço para a temporada 2018 (até agora, apenas Marlos Moreno). O volante acertou todas as bases salariais com o clube carioca, premiações, tempo de contrato e como seria sua programação ao desembarcar no Rio de Janeiro, mas acabou esbarrando no jogo duro feito pelo Hamburgo (ALE), detentor de seus direitos econômicos e responsável por dispensar cerca de 10 milhões de euros (aproximadamente R$ 39 milhões) ao Grêmio, no ano passado.

Vivendo problemas particulares, Walace fez um apelo para os dirigentes do Hamburgo para liberá-lo ao Flamengo. Além de querer ficar mais perto de sua família, o jogador confessou a pessoas próximas que sempre teve o desejo de atuar no Rubro-Negro. Ao receber a informação de que poderia defender o clube tão cedo, ele se animou e apresentou suas intenções ao Hamburgo. Em situação dramática na Bundesliga, o clube não quis se desfazer do jogador, ainda mais sem uma compensação financeira alta.

A questão coloca esbarrou muito nos acertos financeiros. Walace tem sido pouco utilizado, mas a diretoria ainda aposta no talento do jovem volante campeão olímpico com a Seleção Brasileira. Contudo, se existisse um acordo financeiro, não haveria empecilhos pela liberação, já que o jogador não estava focado no clube alemão.

A primeira investida do Flamengo foi uma proposta de um empréstimo sem custos, por 18 meses, com todos os vencimentos nas mãos da diretoria rubro-negra, além da promessa de recuperar o bom futebol do garoto. O motivo seria a maior proximidade de sua família, como Walace pediu, unido ao desejo de defender o clube. Contudo, a ideia foi rechaçada logo nas primeiras reuniões pelos alemães;.

Em seguida, o Flamengo apostou em um novo modelo de empréstimo, que seria até dezembro deste ano, com a maior parte dos vencimentos custeados pelo Rubro-Negro, além de um valor fixado para a compra total dos direitos econômicos. O agente de Walace – que ficou quase um mês inteiro na Europa negociando – teve diversas reuniões com o Hamburgo, tentando convencer o clube de que o acordo seria favorável para todas as partes.

Cientes dos problemas particulares que Walace vive e sabendo da vontade do jogador de voltar, o Hamburgo viu que poderia recuperar o atleta, sem ter um prejuízo financeiro. Assim, o clube alemão negou a nova investida do Flamengo e prometeu todo suporte ao jogador e sua família. Por ora, o Fla desistiu de vez do negócio, mas ainda pensa em uma nova conversa ao fim da temporada europeia, na janela de meio de ano.

Na penúltima colocação da Bundesliga, os dirigentes do Flamengo sabem que o rebaixamento do Hamburgo pode ajudar a fortalecer o negócio e assim conseguir a contratação do jogador em junho, com uma nova oferta de 18 meses. Isso se até lá não surgir uma nova “oportunidade de mercado” ou se algum garoto da base não se fixar na condição de volante titular.

Leeds United fell to a 3-0 defeat against Everton on Saturday afternoon, with the Toffees now just one point behind the Whites in the Premier League table. 

A slow start from Marcelo Bielsa’s side resulted in them falling two goals behind early on, with Seamus Coleman and Michael Keane both scoring for Frank Lampard’s team.

Stuart Dallas also hobbled off injured in the opening stages and Richarlison’s strike which deflected off Anthony Gordon sealed the win late on to make it an afternoon to forget for the visitors at Goodison Park.

In total, these three players lost the ball a whopping 28 times, were second best in 72% of their aerial and ground duels and made just three tackles all afternoon.

Mateusz Klich – 6.3/10

First up is Klich, who was brought off by Bielsa at the interval for Adam Forshaw. The midfielder had an opening 45 minutes to forget, losing possession on nine occasions.

The Poland international committed two fouls, lost five of his six duels and made just one tackle. He had only 25 touches of the ball before being replaced and didn’t have a shot of any kind.

Daniel James – 6.4/10

After scoring twice against Aston Villa on Wednesday, James struggled on Merseyside. The Welshman once again started in a central attacking role but moved out wide when Tyler Roberts came on at half-time.

James lost the ball 11 times, had no shots on target, was second-best in nine of his 12 duels and committed two fouls. He also failed to register a key pass and didn’t complete any of his three crosses, ending with one successful tackle to his name.

Raphinha – 6.5/10

Like Klich, Raphinha was also withdrawn at half-time and again looked off the pace. The Brazilian lost the ball eight times, lost four of his seven duels and, like Klich and James, made just one tackle.

He was also dribbled past twice and failed to have a shot prior to being replaced.
