Ryder Cup star Ludvig Aberg has revealed he grew up idolising an England great, who he “wanted to be like” back when he was playing.
Aberg burst onto the scene at the 2023 Ryder Cup, only three months after deciding to turn professional as a golfer, and the 25-year-old is now gearing up for the 2025 edition of the prestigious tournament, having established himself as a top player.
The Swede is now 14th in the world rankings, off the back of two PGA Tour wins, securing victories at the RSM Classic in November 2023, before going on to win the Genesis Invitational in February 2025.
The Team Europe member has clearly found his calling in golf, but he has revealed that football is another one of his passions, and he continues to regularly play the sport with his friends whenever he gets the chance.
Rory McIlroy named England legend as his greatest ever footballer – not Messi or Ronaldo
The Northern Irishman has named his favourite ever player.
ByDominic Lund Sep 3, 2025
Aberg said: “Football was actually my first pick for a long time. I still adore playing whenever I’m home, I still play with my buddies and I still watch a lot of football. But it was probably right around I was 15 when I first started playing golf a lot more.
“When I moved to high school, that’s when I stopped playing football. I missed it, it’s a cool sport, I still watch Liverpool as much as I can.”
Sweden'sLudvigAbergin action during a practice round
The golf sensation is indeed a huge Liverpool fan, and he named one of the club’s greatest ever players as his idol growing up.
Aberg and McIlroy will need to put aside football rivalries at Ryder Cup
Rory McIlroy might have something to say about his teammate supporting Liverpool, given that he has previously revealed he was a Manchester United fan growing up, with the Northern Irishman idolising a different England legend – Wayne Rooney.
Football rivalries didn’t come between the teammates last time around, however, with Luke Donald captaining Europe to victory, and they will be hoping to make it two wins in a row when the 2025 edition starts on September 25th.
It is no surprise that Aberg named Gerrard as his hero growing up, given that the Liverpool legend won nearly everything there was to win at club level, while also proving himself as a big-game player, memorably scoring a last-minute screamer in the last minute of the 2006 FA Cup final.
Aberg will be hoping he can be just as influential later this month, and McIlroy certainly believes he has what it takes, saying after the 2023 edition: “He was absolutely incredible in the Ryder Cup. I keep saying to everyone, ‘I’m glad he’s European.’ I’m glad he’s on my team.”
Sophia Dunkley hundred in vain as Surrey lose for the third time in four games

Warwickshire inflicted a third Metro Bank One-Day Cup defeat of the season on Surrey at a bracing and blustery Beckenham. Surrey’s 313 for 7, adorned by a century from Sophia Dunkley, never quite looked enough on a cracking batting surface and positive batting from Davina Perrin and Nat Wraith broke the back of the chase before Beth Ellis played an assured finishing role.Warwickshire’s chase was the second-highest ever in women’s List A cricket (Bengal hauled in Haryana’s 389 for 5 in Rajkot in December 2024) and the highest ever in England.Surrey were given a flying start by Bryony Smith and Danni Wyatt-Hodge, 59 coming off the first six overs as the bowlers, perhaps excited by a bit of pace and bounce in the wicket, didn’t get it right, bowling too short and too wide. Issy Wong finally saw Wyatt-Hodge toe-end tamely to Perrin at point but Surrey’s 71 for 1 was still the highest Powerplay score in the competition to date, and that with just 12 coming from overs 7-10.Alice Capsey burned brightly but briefly and Dunkley and Smith put on 76 to keep the innings moving. Smith then sliced Bethan Ellis to backward point for a fine 72-ball 78 and Alice Davidson-Richards and Paige Scholfield both hit 26, while Dunkley just kept batting. Her hundred, off 109 balls, with seven fours and one six, came off the penultimate ball of the innings, Surrey’s final total imposing but less than they would have been looking at after 40 overs when they were 241 for 4.Warwickshire’s openers looked to attack but the Surrey bowlers were disciplined, openers Meg Austin and Abigail Freeborn both perishing trying to hit over the top, caught at mid-on and mid-off respectively. Captain Katie George sparkled briefly but then went the same way, caught at mid-on to give Alice Monaghan her second wicket.Warwickshire scored 66 for 3 in their powerplay, up with the rate but seemingly having lost perhaps one wicket too many. But then Perrin and Wraith put on a century partnership, at one stage benefiting from an unusual five penalty runs for intimidatory fielding by Dani Gregory.Having made 69, Perrin chipped Capsey to long-on, where Scholfield took her third catch but with the run rate under control it was a surprise when Wraith ran herself out for a fine 54. A calm half-century partnership between Em Arlott and Ellis took the visitors within 80 but Capsey then took her second wicket when she bowled Arlott.Ellis carried on calmly picking up singles with the occasional boundary and Charis Pavely gave her good support, the two calmly combining in another half century partnership. Pavely went just before the end but Warwickshire sealed their record-breaking victory by three wickets with 3.3 overs to spare, Ellis finishing unbeaten on 63.

Following their 2-2 draw with Real Betis, former player Stan Collymore has named one Nottingham Forest star who he believes is “finally” living up to the hype.
Ange "disappointed" by Real Betis draw
After falling a goal behind courtesy of Cedric Bakambu’s impressive finish inside 15 minutes, Nottingham Forest arguably played the best football of Ange Postecoglou’s young tenure. The Midlands club soon equalised through summer signing Igor Jesus, who then found his brace to flip the game on its head.
From there, it was Forest’s to lose and they should have extended their lead before the break. Ultimately, however, they left the door ajar for Antony to find a late equaliser for the hosts. In the end, the Tricky Trees were forced to settle for a “disappointing” draw, according to Postecoglou.
Even after making it four wins without a victory as Forest boss, however, there were positives for Postecoglou to take. The first-half display was particularly dominant and Elliot Anderson once again stood out in the middle of the park.
Worse call than Luiz: Ange got it so wrong with 6/10 Nottingham Forest man
Nottingham Forest secured a 2-2 draw with Real Betis in their first European game in 30 years.
ByEthan Lamb Sep 25, 2025
Both the England international and another midfield star received high praise from former Nottingham Forest player Collymore after the game.
Collymore: Sangare "finally" living up to hype
After spending most of last season sidelined through injury, it was important for Ibrahim Sangare to make his mark under Postecoglou and that’s exactly what he’s doing. According to Collymore, Sangare is “finally” living up to the hype after an “incredibly effective” display against Real Betis in the Europa League.
The numbers paint a similar picture about the midfielder. Against Betis, Sangare won two out of three ground duels, was dribbled past just once, and made three recoveries. It was a display that Postecoglou will expect to see from his defensive midfielder every week.
It’s also worth noting the impact that Douglas Luiz has also had and how that may have played a part in Sangare’s revival. The former Aston Villa man was in full control when he was on the pitch and often acted as the conductor for wave after wave of Forest attacks.

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle have built their season on defensive solidity.
Heading into their clash with Arsenal, the Magpies boasted the lowest expected goals conceded (xGA) in the league at 2.5, highlighting just how compact and resilient they had been.
That statistic shifted after Arsenal generated 2.04 xG at St James’ Park, pushing Newcastle down to second-best in the league.
Even so, Howe’s side have only conceded five goals all season while keeping four clean sheets, with only Liverpool and Arsenal managing to find the net against them.
Against the Gunners, Newcastle were disciplined and well-drilled, often forcing Mikel Arteta’s side into less threatening areas.
Yet all that hard work was undone in the 96th minute, when Gabriel Magalhães rose highest to score the winner.
How Gabriel helped to down Newcastle
It was a bitter pill to swallow given how well Newcastle had restricted Arsenal, but Gabriel’s decisive intervention underlined the fine margins at this level.
The Brazilian’s influence was evident beyond his goal. He disrupted Nick Woltemade and marshalled the defensive line with authority.
His performance earned him a man-of-the-match rating of 8.6 – a reminder of just how important he is to Arsenal’s title push.
Even if there was that one blemish with Woltemade, it’s safe to say he’s become a force in the Premier League in recent years.
Gabriel’s journey at Arsenal since arriving from Lille in 2020 has been one of steady progression.
Now 27 years old and valued at around £70m by Transfermarkt, he has cemented his reputation as one of the Premier League’s most commanding centre-backs.
His partnership with William Saliba has been the bedrock of Arsenal’s recent success.
Together they have anchored a backline that has kept 29 clean sheets over the last two seasons, while goalkeeper David Raya has claimed consecutive Golden Glove awards.
Beyond his defensive qualities, Gabriel provides a consistent goal threat.
His headed winner against Newcastle was his 21st goal for Arsenal, a remarkable tally for a central defender.
That ability to contribute at both ends makes him invaluable to Mikel Arteta’s side. Statistically, he remains a well-rounded force.

He completes just over 56 passes per match with a 90.2% accuracy rate, while also contributing 4.79 progressive passes per 90 minutes.
Defensively, he averages 0.95 tackles, 0.46 challenges, and 1.6 blocks per 90, illustrating his balance of proactive interventions and last-ditch defending.
His dominance in the air, as demonstrated against Newcastle, adds yet another dimension to his game.
Arsenal'sGabrielMagalhaes and WilliamSaliba
Having also earned 15 caps for Brazil, Gabriel is now a figure of experience and consistency on the international stage.
If Arsenal are to go one better than last season, his blend of physicality, set-piece threat, and defensive nous will be central to their challenge.
But, do the Toon have their own answer to the big Brazilian?
Chalkboard
Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Newcastle's answer to Gabriel
While Gabriel left St James’ Park with the headlines, Malick Thiaw walked away with plenty of admirers after what has been described as an “outstanding” performance.
The 24-year-old German, a £30m signing from AC Milan, is only a handful of games into his Newcastle career but already looks like a player with huge potential.
Thiaw’s numbers against Arsenal painted the picture of a defender unfazed by one of the toughest attacking units in Europe.
He won four of his six aerial duels, cleared his lines eight times, and registered one interception.
Crucially, he was not dribbled past once, underlining his ability to stand his ground in one-v-one situations.
On the ball, he attempted 23 passes, completing 20, showing the composure that made him such an attractive signing.
He sits in the 95th percentile for pass completion among centre-backs in Europe (93.1%), completing almost 59 passes per match.
He averages 4.43 progressive passes per 90, nearly identical to Gabriel’s 4.79, and also attempts more progressive carries, at 0.60 per 90 compared to Gabriel’s 0.38.
Defensively, Thiaw’s 1.19 tackles per 90 outstrip Gabriel’s 0.95, while he also makes 0.70 blocks per 90.
These numbers highlight subtle differences in style. Gabriel excels in last-ditch defending and aerial duels, while Thiaw appears more proactive in stepping out to intercept and more comfortable driving play forward.
Both are commanding presences, titans at the back, but Thiaw’s on-ball security may give Newcastle an edge in building from the back once Eddie Howe’s attacking system clicks.
The prospect of the summer arrival forming a long-term partnership with Sven Botman is tantalising.
Newcastle defender Sven Botman.
Botman’s anticipation and positional discipline, combined with Thiaw’s composure, could provide Newcastle with a defensive pairing to rival Arsenal’s Gabriel-Saliba axis.
Against Arsenal, Thiaw didn’t just look like a stopgap in Fabian Schär’s absence – he looked like a centre-half ready to shape Newcastle’s future.
His performance against the Gunners suggested he has the physicality, intelligence, and technical quality to become one of the Premier League’s standout defenders.
If Newcastle’s rise continues, Thiaw could be at the heart of it.
