Liverpool lining up summer deal to sign serial winner who may replace Salah

With Mohamed Salah’s contract continuing to tick down, Liverpool are reportedly lining up a summer swoop to sign a potential replacement who knows exactly how to win a league title.

Liverpool transfer news

The Egyptian King was once again at the centre of the positives at Anfield against Southampton as Liverpool survived a first-half scare to eventually win 3-1, courtesy of Salah’s two penalties. Now the Reds’ third all-time top goalscorer, it becomes more and more surprising by the day that their history-maker is on course to leave as a free agent this summer.

If his goals weren’t impressive enough, Salah has had something for everyone this season and is closing in on Thierry Henry’s Premier League assists record with 17 to his name – four more are required to beat the Arsenal legend’s long-standing total.

With nine games to do it, the Liverpool star looks destined to create history once again.

However, as Anfield witnesses greatness, that new contract is yet to come, and those on Merseyside have seemingly been forced to think about potential summer replacements, as if truly replacing Salah is even possible.

He’s flying this season.

ByBarney Lane Mar 8, 2025

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are now lining up a summer swoop to sign Kingsley Coman from Bayern Munich, who value their winger at around €40m (£34m) which is ironically not too dissimilar from the price the Reds paid for Salah in 2017.

Unlike Salah, however, Coman would not be arriving at the peak of his powers. At 28 years old, the Frenchman has struggled for game time ahead of the likes of Michael Olise at Bayern Munich, and if Liverpool want to replace arguably the best player in the world, they need a consistent star.

"Incredible" Coman could receive impossible task

There was once a time when Coman was asked to step out of Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben’s shadow to become Bayern’s star player, before doing exactly that.

Now, the Frenchman looks to have been returned to the shadows amid the arrival of Olise, who has stolen the spotlight in style since joining from Crystal Palace.

Having won eight Bundesliga titles and a Champions League during his time in Germany, it could easily be said that Coman has completed life at the Bavarians, making this summer an ideal time to move on.

Bayern Munich's KingsleyComancelebrates

If that is to be the case, he could receive an even tougher task than the one he was handed all those years ago in Germany. Instead of Robben and Ribery, it could be Salah who he is asked to replace as Liverpool desperately look to ease any potential blow caused by the Egyptian’s expiring contract.

Previously dubbed “incredible” by former manager Hansi Flick, it remains to be seen whether a summer departure would see the Frenchman get back to his best form or whether he’s simply past the peak of his powers.

Spurs sold midfield "master" for just £8.5m, now he's better than Bergvall

Tottenham Hotspur’s campaign dangles by a thread, with Sunday’s defeat at Craven Cottage the latest in a lasting litany.

Hopes of success through the Premier League are negligible, for Spurs are sat in 14th with nine games to go, some ten points behind tenth-place Bournemouth.

However, Ange Postecoglou will cling to the Europa League and rightly so. Tottenham beat AZ Alkmaar last week to move into the quarter-finals, where a two-legged tie with Eintracht Frankfurt awaits.

Winning the competition would not only end an interminable trophy drought but carve a pathway through to next season’s Champions League proper.

Plenty of variables and the wrong move could spell the end for Ange. However, the Australian has reshaped Tottenham into an outfit with attacking inspiration once more. Injuries have weighed the club down in 2024/25, but there have been several threads which speak of an exciting future.

Lucas Bergvall is chief among them.

Lucas Bergvall's Tottenham future

When Tottenham won the race for teenage prodigy Bergvall in January 2024, they left Barcelona munching dust as they claimed the prized signature for an £8.5m figure.

Some bargain, that. The Swedish midfielder, still only 19, stayed in his homeland with Djurgården until the end of the 2023/24 campaign, but after arriving in London last summer, his talent and intelligence have swiftly seen him graduate in Postecoglou’s system to a high station, featuring 38 times, scoring one goal, adding four assists.

The fact he hasn’t graced the youth scene even once stands as a barometer for his ability and recognition within Ange’s project. Of course, injuries to other teammates have accelerated his development and then some, but Bergvall has largely stood out, earning praise from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola for being “unstoppable” on the ball.

The data backs that one up, for sure. As per FBref, Bergvall ranks among the top 1% of centre-midfielders across Europe over the past year for successful take-ons per 90, perfectly highlighting his expertise in that area.

It goes to show that Tottenham have the framework for something special, there is enough substance about this squad to create a trophy-winning future.

However, injuries and, yes, Ange’s failings may well have set the club back this year. So much hinges on getting a grip on that European trophy.

Bergvall’s great, but he is only a teenager. Looking back, Postecoglou might regret cashing in on a midfielder who plays in a similar vein to the Sweden international and might just have been an invaluable option in the middle of the park this season.

Ange must regret selling "master" for cheap

Tottenham Hotspurs’ advancement to the last eight in the Europa League owed in large part to Bergvall’s brilliance in the centre, notably winning all seven duels and completing each of his three attempted dribbles, as per Sofascore.

He’s only going to get better, but there is certainly a sense that he might have benefitted from Postecoglou keeping Giovani Lo Celso in the squad this year.

Tottenham signed Lo Celso from Real Betis in 2019, initially on loan, before the Spanish side re-signed him for a cheap £8.5m fee last summer when he had one year remaining on his contract.

The technically gifted midfielder largely struggled to impress in Tottenham, scoring ten goals across 108 matches, but he did enjoy moments under Postecoglou’s wing last season, with his performances this year proving he may well have still been of use.

Lo Celso is riding the crest of a wave this season, and if we contrast his metrics in La Liga with his performances throughout the 2023/24 campaign in the Premier League, it’s clear he’s got enough about him across the different functions of the midfield game to have made a positive impression once again this term.

As you can see, Lo Celso’s role at Betis has given rise to his playmaking qualities, but his defensive sharpness remains of particular note, combining with a “magic” touch on the ball – as has been noted by football reporter Oliver Young-Myles – to produce a refined and rounded midfielder.

As per FBref, the 28-year-old actually ranks among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for progressive passes and tackles, the top 2% for passes attempted and the top 6% for shot-creating actions per 90. It’s no wonder he’s been described as “the master of the last pass” by journalist Milena Gimon in the past.

He doesn’t dribble forward with regularity, but Lo Celso has completed 73% of his ball-carrying attempts in La Liga this term, highlighting his aptitude on that front too, another emulation of Bergvall’s abilities.

With a far superior goal threat, wonderful ball-playing game and defensive security, there’s little question Lo Celso is outperforming most of Tottenham’s midfield this term, Bergvall among them. This is not to the Swede’s discredit, but rather an illumination of the wrongdoings down N17. He should have been kept on the books.

All told, Lo Celso was underwhelming for the majority of his time in north London, but his prolific performances this year suggest that £8.5m fee wasn’t a fair reflection of market value when he left.

Not only that, the Argentinian star could have added the perfect extra dimension to Postecoglou’s struggling side this term, easing the burden on the shoulders of youngsters like Bergvall.

Spurs could sign striker who's "more complete than Haaland" for bargain fee

Tottenham have been presented with an opportunity to sign a 14-goal forward for a reduced price.

Keaton Jennings' untimely tear hands Somerset a lifeline after run-spree

Rain frustrates Lancashire as hosts hope to escape with draw after chastening day two

Paul Edwards22-Apr-2023

Wickets, which retains its status as the best breakfast shop on the circuit, seemed to be thronged with Lancastrians this morning. “Hope you enjoyed yesterday,” was the general tenor of their conversation and you can imagine the sort of response that might have received from Somerset supporters with the scoreboard informing us that the visitors were 302 for 1. Even more to the point, Keaton Jennings was unbeaten on 124 having taken his aggregate in two innings against one of his favourite opponents to 442.There was, therefore, every good reason for the locals to be gloomy before play began and even the omens were hardly propitious. For example, it was Emergency Services Day at the County Ground, which seemed something of an overreaction to the home team’s unimpressive draw and its loss at Trent Bridge. But maybe seeing Jack Leach hit for five sixes and going for 103 runs in 17 overs had decided things. And so cricket, like the lovely old witch she is, served up two sessions to pickle expectations. After a day on which the fall of a single Lancashire wicket seemed a rude aberration, the visitors lost nine batsmen, eight of them to the bowlers and the other to a torn hamstring which Jennings suffered when completing a single at around 12.30pm and which the ministrations of physio, Sam Byrne, could not calm. Luke Wells came out to serve as runner but it turned out that Jennings could not complete the most gentle of defensive shots without pain. After facing two balls from Leach, he hobbled off for the day with 189 high-quality runs against his name. This mattered partly because it occurred in the 80th over. Four deliveries after Jennings had left the field, Tom Abell took the new ball and Lewis Gregory bowled an excellent over with it. His first delivery shaded away from Dane Vilas, who nicked a catch to James Rew; his fourth had Colin de Grandhomme driving loosely but only edging another catch to the keeper. At this point, Somerset supporters could see Lancashire batters leaving the field with pleasingly unexpected regularity and with the score reading 413 for very few, the locals didn’t give a monkey’s what had prompted their departures. There are times when you pick apples from the tree and times when they drop of their own accord but they all go into the pie.The day got better for Somerset’s seamers and better for Rew, who had taken six catches and dropped none by the time Lancashire were bowled out for 554. Yes, a deficit of 113 left them on the sharp end of affairs but it was rather better than had seemed probable when Jennings, Wells and Josh Bohannon were scampering along at six an over on Friday afternoon. The cloudy conditions helped, of course, but so did the simple common sense of Gregory and Peter Siddle, who shared six wickets by keeping the ball up to the bat. For the plain truth was that the bowlers who stuck to the disciplines of line and length on or around off stump enjoyed success. That probably sounds like something one might have found in when E W Swanton was in the pulpit but it happens to be the bald truth. Having made 85, Bohannon had been beaten when fencing at Siddle and George Balderson was to depart when cutting at Gregory half an hour after lunch. George Bell made a pleasing 36 before falling to Siddle but Lancashire’s innings was now composed of such modest contributions and the change in tempo after Friday’s carnage was obvious, even to those spectators getting stuck into the cider on Thatchers TerraceThe weather was closing in as well. Russell Warren and Richard Illingworth took the players off in mid-afternoon and we needed folklore to help us weigh up the likelihood of a resumption. One local made use of St James’ weather vane, a Taunton pavilion and a range of local hills: “If the cock’s arse is facing the Colin Atkinson and you can’t see the Blackdowns, you can put your feet up for a couple of hours,” he said.. The first of these conditions was met in mid-afternoon in Taunton but not quite the second, so we came back for the one ball that Leach needed to bowl James Anderson, who was trying to reverse sweep. It would be eleven overs before the rain returned and that brief session brought further comfort to Somerset. Rather than lose their top order to Anderson and Tom Bailey, as they had done on Thursday morning, they reached what became close of play without mishap, Tom Lammonby batted competently, as the locals know he can, and Sean Dickson made an unbeaten 15 which might seem like manna to him after scores of 5, 0, 0 and 14. At the very least, home supporters can arrive at the County Ground on the final morning with reason to hope their team can avoid a second defeat in three games. The rest of us will have to be mummy’s little soldiers and cope with the fact that Wickets doesn’t open on Sundays.

Zimbabwe have made just three changes to their squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup qualifiers from the 15 that competed at the T20 World Cup last year. Top-order batter Joylord Gumbie is in line for an international debut, while Tadiwanashe Marumani and Innocent Kaia are also in the playing group. Regis Chakabva, Milton Shumba and Tony Munyonga miss out from the last time Zimbabwe were part of a global tournament. The three new squad members have all been rewarded for recent form. Gumbie has enjoyed a successful last three months, with a century against a touring Glamorgan side and hundreds in both the first-class and List A formats against Pakistan Shaheens, where Kaia was also among the runs. And Marumani topped the batting charts in Zimbabwe’s Pro50 Championship last summer.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The squad will be captained by Craig Ervine and includes familiar faces such as Sean Williams, Blessing Muzarabani, Luke Jognwe and Sikandar Raza. Raza has just returned from a stint with the Punjab Kings at the IPL, and has been signed by Seattle Orcas in the upcoming Major League Cricket [MLC] tournament. By the time that competition begins on July 13, Zimbabwe will know whether they have qualified for this year’s ODI World Cup in India, after missing out on the 2019 edition. Then, Zimbabwe failed to make it out of a home qualifying tournament after losing to UAE in a rain-reduced encounter in Harare in March 2018.This edition of the qualifiers is taking place in June-July, in the southern hemisphere winter, which is typically dry in Zimbabwe and should reduce the risk of weather-interrupted fixtures. It will also, unlike the 2018 edition, include the use of the DRS system from the Super Six stage onwards. The group stage will have a third umpire referral for run-outs at its disposal.Zimbabwe have been grouped alongside Nepal, Netherlands, USA and West Indies and will play all their first-round matches at Harare Sports Club. The top three teams from each group will progress to the Super Sixes, where they will play against the three teams from the other group. The teams that finish first and second from the Super Six stage will advance to the World Cup.Full squad: Ryan Burl, Tendai Chatara, Craig Ervine (capt), Bradley Evans, Joylord Gumbie, Luke Jongwe, Innocent Kaia, Clive Madande, Wessly Madhevere, Tadiwanashe Marumani, Wellington Masakadza, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Sikandar Raza, Sean Williams
