'Rushed' Gaikwad finds his red-ball rhythm to score a fine century

Batter highlights, quite eloquently, the challenges of shifting from white-ball cricket to red-ball cricket

Chennai Super Kings and India opener Ruturaj Gaikwad is hard at work trying to become an all-format cricketer.Playing for India A in the third unofficial Test against New Zealand A, the batter scored a magnificent hundred off just 127 balls. The pace of his run-scoring perhaps make sense when seen in the light of his exploits in white-ball cricket, especially in the IPL. But to be so fluent while playing only his third first-class game in 30 months was something special.Speaking to journalists in Bengaluru after the end of first day’s play, Gaikwad said, “It’s a massive difference playing days cricket after so long. I feel in the first two innings, first two games I was rushed a bit. Hence, my mindset here was to just stay on the wicket. I knew that their spinners (when compared to ours) are not up to the mark, so obviously the runs would flow.”Gaikwad was eloquent as he tried to explain the difficulties of a batter adjusting to the demands of red-ball cricket, especially given how we live in a time when white-ball skills seep into players’ muscle memory.”Its like you are used to it, where your bat flows naturally for all the shots you want to play in T20 cricket,” he said. “You have to be ready for each and every ball and have three particular options in your mind for each ball. Then, all of a sudden, to come red-ball cricket where you don’t really have to look for runs, you have to focus on staying on the wicket.”The first thing you have to do here, shifting from white to red (ball) is stopping that instinct and trying to just focus on your breath, play ball by ball, session by session and trying to play out the day. You have to apply your basics like playing under your head, having your shoulder aligned, if the ball is really outside of your right eye [as a right-hander] then leaving it alone. These basics come into the game for red-ball cricket.”Technique is just one area of focus for an all-format player. “After playing lot of cricket, the mind has many thoughts and keeps flowing in all directions and there are lot of inputs coming in,” Gaikwad said. “It is very important to be focused and to know your own game as to how you can channel it in different formats.”Ruturaj Gaikwad: You have to have three particular options in your mind for each ball in T20 cricket•PTI

Although he is known for his exploits as an opener in white-ball cricket, Gaikwad was happy to occupy the No. 3 role in this India A side.”I think even in first class, while playing for my state [Maharashtra], usually when we tend to play an extra batter, I play at three,” he said. “When we play an extra bowler, I open the batting. The role has always been flexible. And obviously both Priyank [Panchal] and Abhimanyu [Easwaran] are experienced and have been opening the innings for a long time so they deserve to be there (opening). I have been used to this (number 3) role so not much has changed or is different.”Scoring a century for India A against a quality attack on a bowler-friendly pitch is an achievement. However Gaikwad was in no mood to celebrate. He was disappointed that he fell for 108 when he was looking set to make an even bigger score. And that feeling only got worse when New Zealand A built on the breakthrough, picking up the last six wickets for just 48 runs and bowling his side out for 293.”I had a very good chance to make a big one,” Gaikwad said. “Not only for myself but I felt that me staying at the wicket today would’ve been very crucial for us as a team. It would’ve been a different scenario if I was there. And maybe I would’ve added 40-50-60 runs with the tail tomorrow and the total would’ve been very different. Big one (disappointment) for me personally and even for the team as I feel we’re 50-60 runs short for sure.”Having made his international debut in 2021, and been part of a few India squads recently, Gaikwad retains the fire to play at the highest level. But for now, he is just focused on what is immediately in front of him.”Be it a domestic game or any other game, the focus and approach has to be the same. No personal agenda in that,” he said. “Whatever the team situation is, you have to make sure you adapt to it as quickly as possible. Make sure you’re doing the job what is required of you. Be it Ranji Trophy, India A, IPL or the international team, the role depends on what the team requires. You have to keep the team first.”This 27-year-old batter is excited about the prospect of having a full-fledged domestic and Ranji Trophy season. He hopes that it would be a good challenge for him.

Their new Kalvin Phillips: Leeds keen on late move for "world-class" ace

Kalvin Phillips is a player who will forever live long in the memory of all Leeds United supporters after coming through the academy and starring in the first team before being sold for big money.

The 29-year-old made his debut back in the 2014/15 Championship season, ending up notching a total of 234 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 14 goals from a deep-lying midfield role.

However, he would depart ahead of the 2022/23 season, joining Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City for a fee in the region of £45m, banking the club a massive profit, but losing one of their star men in the process.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

It’s safe to say his career hasn’t hit the heights since, only making 31 appearances for the Premier League champions, enduring a torrid loan spell at West Ham United before joining newly promoted Ipswich Town on a temporary basis in the summer.

Two and a half years after his departure from Elland Road, boss Daniel Farke has the opportunity to land his own version of the England international before the closure of the transfer window next week.

Leeds United plot move for midfield talent

According to The Sun, Leeds are plotting an ambitious move to land Besiktas midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the coming days to bolster the midfield department.

However, they face competition from the likes of Leicester City, Wolves and Sheffield United, who are also in the race to land the 31-year-old former Liverpool star.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Besiktas.

He only moved to Turkey in the summer of 2023, but has since struggled for game time, only making six appearances in 2024/25 – with only two of which coming from a starting position.

The report claims that the Whites believe he could add serious quality to the current side to help push them over the line in their quest for a return to the Premier League come the end of May.

Whilst the competition appears to be tough for the former England international’s signature, it’s evident that he would be a stellar addition – having the skill set to aid Farke’s quest.

Why Oxlade-Chamberlain could be Leeds’ new Kalvin Phillips

Given Phillips’ time in Yorkshire, it would take someone very special to replicate the levels produced by the 29-year-old at Elland Road.

Despite his departure, the hierarchy have recruited excellently in the midfield department, softening the blow of his departure with the likes of Ao Tanaka and Ethan Ampadu at the heart of the side.

Their form has contributed to the current league standing, which sees the club sit top of the table with just 17 games remaining, potentially making it difficult for any new addition to break into the side.

However, Oxlade-Chamberlain, who’s previously been dubbed “world-class” by one analyst, could be the player to do just that, having the ability to replicate the form of fan-favourite Phillips.

Both started their careers as more attacking options but eventually dropped into deeper roles, a decision that has seen the pair make the most of their potential.

When delving into the former Liverpool ace’s stats from the Süper Lig this season, he’s managed to complete 83% of his attempted long passes, following suit of Phillips, who caught the eye for a similar thing during his time in Yorkshire.

Despite primarily being a more ball-playing option, the 31-year-old has also impressed defensively, winning 4.8 duels per 90, with 1.6 of which being aerials – highlighting his ability to be the perfect box-to-box or deep-lying options given his quality in both areas.

The competition may be fierce for his services, but if the club want to further strengthen their ambitions of ending their two-year stint in England’s second tier, then the former Liverpool star would massively increase their chances.

Liverpool's AlexOxlade-Chamberlain

Injuries have been an issue in the past for the experienced talent, but given any move would likely be a loan, it’s a perfect opportunity to take a risk in their quest for Premier League football once again.

Rohit Sharma: Saving Bumrah's career more important than this T20 World Cup

India captain believes “everything is looking good” as far as Bumrah’s replacement Shami is concerned

Rohit: ‘We will definitely feel Bumrah’s absence’

Saving Jasprit Bumrah’s career was far more important than risking him at the 2022 T20 World Cup, India captain Rohit Sharma said at the pre-tournament press conference in Melbourne.Bumrah is out of the tournament due to a back injury that potentially rules him out of action for at least six more weeks. It’s the latest injury in a series of long-standing problems India’s pace spearhead has had in recent times.Related

Timeline – how injuries have kept Bumrah out in the last four years

How do India replace the irreplaceable Jasprit Bumrah?

“We spoke to a lot of the specialists about his injuries, but we did not get a decent response,” Rohit said. “This World Cup is important, but his career is more important. He is only 27-28, there is a lot of cricket in front of him.”So, we can’t take such a risk. All the specialists we spoke to were of the same opinion. There is a lot of cricket ahead of him, he will play a lot more and help India win matches. There is no doubt that he will be missed.”Bumrah’s spot has now been taken up by Mohammed Shami, who is coming back from three months of no cricket, having last played competitive cricket on the tour of England in July. He was part of India’s T20I series against Australia and South Africa but was withdrawn after testing positive for Covid-19.Shami has recovered from Covid and passed a series of fitness and cardiovascular tests before getting on the plane to Australia last week. He is set to have his first training session in the country on Sunday along with the rest of India’s squad. Looking ahead, Rohit believes “everything is looking good” as far as the fast bowler is concerned.”Shami was down with Covid-19 two-three weeks back, he was at home, in his farm,” Rohit said. “He was then called over to the National Cricket Academy, he went there and worked quite hard over the last 10 days. His recovery after Covid was very good. He had three to four bowling sessions. All in all, everything is good as far as Shami is concerned.”The Indian team has just wrapped up their week-long camp in Perth where they trained and played in two warm-up games against a Western Australia XI. The caravan now moves to Brisbane, where India is slated to have a training session on Sunday, followed by two warm-ups, against Australia and New Zealand on October 17 and 19.”We have our practice session in Brisbane tomorrow,” Rohit said. “He [Shami] will practice with the team. Whatever we have heard about Shami so far, is very positive. Injuries are part and parcel of the sport, there is nothing much that can be done about it. When you play so many games, injuries are bound to happen. Our focus in this last year was that we should build our bench strength.”When it comes to injuries, we have done a lot with regard to player management in the last one year, but these things happen, and there is not much you can do about it. Our focus in the last year was to get the players in the queue ready, and give them opportunities. We know injuries can happen anytime, so our constant focus was to give the players in the waiting enough games and back them.”The bowlers that have come to the World Cup, they have played a lot of matches. And this was our focus. I think we have received success.”

Moyes must unleash "dynamite" star who’s Everton’s own version of Kluivert

Everton have been enjoying life under David Moyes, but all of a Toffees persuasion know that the week ahead is one of significance.

While three successive Premier League victories have created a sizeable buffer between Goodison Park and the relegation zone, fans will no doubt clamour for a victory over Bournemouth in the FA Cup this afternoon, especially now that Moyes has been reinstated to the helm.

Everton managerDavidMoyesbefore the match

Moyes led Everton through the noughties and is a revered figure for his work at the club, but Everton’s trophyless run stretches way back to 1995 when they won the FA Cup and subsequent Community Shield.

The Cherries have been in fine fettle under Andoni Iraola this term and have done the double over Everton in the Premier League. Now, it’s time for revenge, with Moyes playing host to one of England’s in-form outfits.

Everton team news

Everton will need to be on their a-game to defeat a slick and stylish Bournemouth team. They were beaten by Liverpool at the Vitality last weekend but had previously gone 11 league matches undefeated.

The dearth of fit forwards means that Beto will reprise his role at number nine, buoyed by netting a brace in the 4-0 victory over Leicester City last time out.

However, next Wednesday’s Merseyside derby means that Moyes could make a few rotations where possible, albeit picking a team that is capable of sending the South Coast side packing.

James Garner and Tim Iroegbunam could play a part after recovering from respective issues last week. Dwight McNeil is still injured, so January recruit Charly Alcaraz could make his debut for the club in a forward-thrust midfield role.

Carlos Alcaraz

Everton have lost seven of their past nine meetings with Bournemouth across all competitions, and so will need to be on the ball, so to speak.

Defensive resilience will be crucial against such a coherent offensive force, but Moyes will want to ensure his team packs a punch too, and Iliman Ndiaye could hold the key.

How Iliman Ndiaye can hurt Bournemouth

Everton signed Ndiaye from French club Marseille for a £15m fee last summer, a deal that looks shrewder and shrewder by the week.

Everton star Iliman Ndiaye

Beto scored twice last time out but hasn’t been clinical or assertive enough throughout the lion’s share of his Everton career, joining from Udinese for an eye-catching £26m fee in August 2023.

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Armando Broja both injured, Ndiaye will need to step up to the plate and provide his outfit with a goal threat from wide, especially with Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom exacerbating the situation from the right, both wingers without a single goal contribution this year.

Jesper Lindstrom for Everton

Though Sean Dyche was dismissed from his duties in January after failing to provide Everton with any meaningful attacking flair, Ndiaye still managed to showcase his exciting quality, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp hailing the Senegal international’s “dynamite” talent.

It’s all the more impressive that he’s gone from strength to strength this Moyes’ appointment last month, scoring in all three of the Scottish manager’s recent victories in the Premier League.

This incisiveness will be crucial. Understat record that Bournemouth have outperformed their expected goals against (xGA) by 6.81 this season, effectively suggesting that the Cherries are solid and effective in the defensive third, even though they’ve cultivated something of a – deserved – reputation for being an attacking spectacle under their Spanish boss.

BBC Sport’s Oluwashina Okeleji has described “Everton’s standout performer this season” and it’s clear to see why. He’s scored six goals from 23 Premier League matches this season, missing only two big chances, but has also averaged 2.5 dribbles and 6.3 successful duels per outing, owing to his energy and combativeness.

He’s going to be a real thorn, with his complete skill set perfect to hit the attack-minded visitors on the counter.

Of course, Everton will have to deal with Bournemouth’s own fleet-footed wideman: Justin Kluivert. The Dutch winger has been immense this season, scoring 11 goals and adding four assists across 23 Premier League matches.

While Bournemouth’s star leads the way when it comes to contributions in front of goal, the electric Ndiaye caught the eye with his underlying metrics, bespeaking his quality and the importance of his involvement for Everton, aiding his team across attacking and defensive phases.

It’s also worth pointing out that Ndiaye has been playing in a far more restrictive attacking unit, evidenced by his low shots total. Even so, the Senegalese has bagged a respectable number of non-penalty goals, whereas six of Kluivert’s top-flight goals this term have come from the spot.

He’s also far more persistent with his successful take-ons, driving at defenders and adding a dimension that few teams are able to replicate with such vim and vigour.

One can only imagine how Ndiaye would be getting on within Iraola’s brood. Perhaps it would be he, and not Kluivert, claiming the Premier League Player of the Month award for January.

After all, Ndiaye has scored in each of Moyes’ recent victories, warming up at the perfect time as the Merseysiders look to score a seat-raising win over Bournemouth and advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup for only the third time in nine seasons.

To be sure, Ndiaye has played a lot of football this season. However, his crackling movements up and down the left flank, partnered with his ever-improving sharpness in front of goal, suggests that he could be the difference-maker in a tight affair.

Kluivert will be highlighted in the Everton defensive meeting, but Ndiaye, Moyes’ own version, might just be the one to emerge on top.

Worth 2x more than Ndiaye: Everton must regret selling "frightening" star

Everton have reached an exciting new era but must rue having lost this high-class talent.

Hurricanes into top four after Graham's maiden fifty

Heather Graham’s maiden WBBL half-century has helped Hobart Hurricanes climb into the competition’s top four with a 23-run win over a scrappy Adelaide Strikers. After Graham’s even 50 helped Hobart to 4 for 152, Nicola Carey became Hurricanes’ all-time leading wicket-taker as her 2 for 24 kept the Strikers to 4 for 129.The result marked Hurricanes’ first win over the Strikers since the opening weeks of the inaugural WBBL competition seven years ago, and has significant ramifications for this year’s tournament. After not playing finals since 2016-17, Hurricanes are now above defending champions Perth and into fourth with a game in hand on most teams in front of them.Strikers are still ahead of them in third with four games to play, but could have leapfrogged Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers into first with a win on Friday night at Karen Rolton Oval. And the Strikers largely had their fielding to blame. They dropped Elyse Villani on zero, Carey on 10 and Graham on 20. Combined, they added an extra 91 to their scores with Villani hitting 47 up top and Carey finishing unbeaten on 24.In comparison, the Hurricanes caught brilliantly when it mattered before Villani spilled a couple of late chances.Graham took a nice running catch on the boundary to remove Deandra Dottin for 15 off Carey, while Amy Smith pouched Tahlia McGrath (27) coming forward and low to the ground just as the allrounder looked to get going. That left Laura Wolvaardt to take control of the chase, but when Strano darted in one wide outside off to have her stumped for 45, the game was essentially done.Elsewhere, Brisbane Heat have lost the competition’s leading run-scorer Georgia Redmayne to a hamstring injury for their clash with Hurricanes on Saturday.Heat coaching staff are confident she will return before the finals in a little over a week, with Redmayne enhancing her hopes of an Australian call-up with 333 runs at 41.62 in the tournament.
