Pundit hails criticised Tottenham star after international duty heroics

One Tottenham star appears to be finding some joy on international duty, and has been praised for his heroics following some recent criticism from supporters.

Spurs face Man City after return of Premier League football

Following a disastrous end to their last round of fixtures prior to this break, Spurs face a difficult task in the form of a trip to take on Premier League champions Man City at the Etihad Stadium.

Right now, there hasn’t been a better time to play City in quite a while, with the Sky Blues enduring four consecutive defeats in all competitions for the first time in Pep Guardiola’s managerial career.

The first of those losses actually came at the hands of Ange Postecoglou, who guided Tottenham to a 2-1 win over City in the Carabao Cup just over a fortnight ago, courtesy of Timo Werner’s first goal since March and a brilliant long-range strike from Pape Matar Sarr.

However, if they’re to replicate those heroics against a Guardiola side still boasting plenty of quality, they will have to be far better than their last two performances.

Spurs suffered a 3-2 defeat to Turkish champions Galatasaray last week, which arguably flattered Postecoglou, as the home side could have come away with a much greater win considering the chances they created.

That was followed by a dismal 2-1 loss at home to Ipswich Town in the Premier League, with the likes of Radu Dragusin and Pedro Porro enduring nightmares in Tottenham’s last match.

Depending on whether Micky van de Ven will be back at that point, who could come back in to replace the former in Postecoglou’s line-up, both Dragusin and Porro will need to put in far better shifts.

Another star who was subject to criticism after his display against Ipswich was big-name forward Son Heung-min. The £190,000-per-week forward boasts three goals and three assists from his opening eight Premier League matches this season, but supporters weren’t impressed with his performance against Kieran McKenna’s side.

Tottenham star Son Heung-min hailed after South Korea heroics

That is according to pundit John Wenham, who told Tottenham News that Son could get a confidence boost from his South Korea performances on international duty.

The 32-year-old scored his 50th goal for South Korea with a penalty against Kuwait on Thursday, leading his country to a 3-1 win in their World Cup qualifier.

“To reach 50 goals for South Korea is impressive,” said Wenham. “It was a penalty on this occasion. However, you still need to score. I never devalue a penalty, they’re still difficult to convert.

“Therefore, hopefully, that will give Son a confidence booster. He was someone who seemed to take a lot of fan criticism for his display against Ipswich. I don’t think it was against him personally, I just think it is because his standards are so high. He is a world-class player, so people expect a lot of him.”

ICC’s clarification on a total of eight penalty points comes when the side is staring down a mammoth task to salvage second Ashes Test in Adelaide

As if England’s plight wasn’t difficult enough, staring down a 456-run deficit heading into the third day in Adelaide, the ICC piled on more misery by docking them a further three points for slow over rates in the first Ashes Test in Brisbane.England were originally handed a penalty of five World Test Championship (WTC) points – and fined 100% of their match fees – for maintaining a slow over rate in the first Test at the Gabba but the ICC on Friday announced the penalty would now be eight points in total.”Last Saturday, it was announced that England would be docked five WTC points, one for each over they were found to initially have fallen short by,” the ICC said in a statement. “However, it has since emerged they were eight overs short, and will therefore lose three additional points.”The points deduction for penalty overs is not capped and must reflect the actual number of penalty overs a team is short of the minimum requirement as per Clause 16.1.2 of the ICC Playing Conditions, hence they have been penalised one point for each over they were short.”Related

The announcement leaves England in seventh place on the WTC table, with six points from five Tests in the current competition cycle, and came after England had lost early wickets to be 17 for 2 in response to Australia’s first-innings 473 for 9 declared when an electrical storm curtailed the final session on day two of the second Test at Adelaide Oval.England managed to bowl 89 of the scheduled 90 overs on the first day in Adelaide, albeit relying on five overs of Joe Root’s part-time off-spin to catch up.While over rates could well remain a concern for England’s five-man seam attack, Graham Thorpe, their assistant coach, played down the issue after the first day’s play, saying: “I think there’s bigger things going on in the world than over rates.”England, who lost the first Test by nine wickets and now face a mammoth task to salvage the second, were also penalised for a poor overrate in their home series against India in July and August, meaning they have now conceded a total of 10 points for slow over rate offences.

Gurbaz century, Mujeeb four-for secure Afghanistan series win

Netherlands lost their last eight wickets for just 64 runs, costing them the opportunity to level the series.

A century from Rahmanullah Gurbaz and four wickets for Mujeeb Ur Rahman helped Afghanistan beat Netherlands by 48 runs to wrap up a series win with an ODI to spare. In the second of three matches in Doha, Afghanistan batted first after winning the toss, and despite the early loss of Usman Ghani, got off to a solid start thanks to an 83-run partnership between Gurbaz and Rahmat Shah. The Dutch bowlers found wicket-taking a challenge, and that stand was followed up by 106 runs added for the third wicket, with Hashmatullah Shahidi scoring a half-century.Once Shahidi was bowled by debutant Ryan Klein, Afghanistan struggled to tee off, but cameos from Najibullah Zadran and Rashid Khan meant they managed to get up to 237. Fred Klaassen and Phillippe Boissevain took two wickets each. The chase began with the early loss of Musa Ahmed and Colin Ackermann. A 90-run stand between Scott Edwards and Bas de Leede pushed Netherlands up to 125 for 3, but once that stand was broken, Afghanistan began to take control again.Pieter Seelar’s run out saw the lower middle order come in, but strikes from Rashid and Mujeeb meant Afghanistan were burrowing deep inside the Dutch tail. Once Edwards fell for 86, there was little resistance from the rest, and by the time Mujeeb bowled No. 11 Vivian Kingma, Afghanistan had wrapped up a comfortable win. The Netherlands lost their last eight wickets for just 64 runs, costing them the opportunity to level the series.

POUCAS CHANCES

He’s better than Mangala: Everton targeting January move for £83k-p/w star

After another near miss with relegation last season, it was crucial that Everton recruited well over the summer transfer window to try and help themselves pull clear of the drop zone in 2024/25.

The board invested a decent chunk of money into the playing squad, adding much-needed quality in various areas of the pitch to aid their mid-table ambitions.

Jake O’Brien was brought in for £16m from Ligue 1 side Lyon to provide that added defensive quality, but up to now, the Irish international has only featured for 26 minutes in the Premier League.

As for the forward line, Iliman Ndiaye and Armando Broja were both brought into the club, aiming to add goals after their measly league tally of just 40 goals in 38 matches last time around.

The latter is still yet to feature due to various injury issues, but will be hoping that upon his return to senior football, he can offer that threat in attacking areas the Toffees have been desperately missing.

One other player also arrived during the aforementioned window, looking to be a steady Premier League option for Sean Dyche on Merseyside.

Orel Mangala’s stats for Everton

Belgian midfielder Orel Mangala arrived at Everton during the summer on a season-long loan from French side Lyon, the same as O’Brien, despite only joining them permanently just a few weeks prior.

The 26-year-old is currently in his second spell in England’s top flight after previously featuring for Nottingham Forest in their first 18 months back in the division following promotion back in 2022.

Orel Mangala

Since his move to Goodison, Mangala has featured eight times in the league under Dyche, claiming just one victory in the process, against Crystal Palace.

However, when looking into his stats from his opening few months at the club, he’s produced some impressive numbers that rank him highly within the current first-team squad.

He’s won an average of one tackle per 90 so far this season, along with 1.6 successful dribbles per 90, which ranks him second within the squad above the likes of Dwight McNeil and Jack Harrison.

However, he may be unable to retain his starting place under Dyche past January should The Friedkin Group pursue a move for one player in the upcoming window.

Everton targeting January move for midfielder

According to As Roma Live, Everton are plotting a potential January move for midfielder Bryan Cristante to try and bolster the options available to Dyche.

The 29-year-old, who is valued at £17m as per Transfermarkt, has made 12 appearances in Serie A so far this campaign, scoring just once in the 2-1 win against Venezia.

The report goes on to state that with Everton’s prospective owners, The Friedkin Group, currently in charge of the Serie A side, a deal involving striker Beto could take place – seeing the Portuguese forward go in the opposite direction, allowing Cristante to move to Goodison.

The Italian would provide an experienced head in the centre of the park, undoubtedly being an upgrade on current option Mangala despite his impressive start to life on Merseyside.

He’s completed significantly more progressive carries and progressive passes per 90 than the Belgian, with his former boss José Mourinho describing the midfielder as “indispensable” during his time as Roma manager.

Cristante has also won more tackles and completed more clearances per 90, making him the perfect box-to-box option for Dyche as they aim to fend off relegation once more this campaign.

It would be an excellent addition for the Toffees should they be able to pull off the deal for the £83k-per-week star, adding that needed quality at the heart of the side.

Any move including Beto remains to be seen, with the big-money signing potentially having a significant part to play for the Italian side in a deal that could see Cristante move to Goodison in January.

Everton must cash in on £80k-p/w flop who Koeman was "delighted" to sign

Everton’s resounding victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers left Sean Dyche feeling like a weight had been lifted from his back. But truthfully, perhaps it’s just showcasing a side to this Toffees team that is scarcely on offer under the former Burnley boss’ rule.

Keeping it short-term, Everton kept a clean sheet, enjoyed a romping scoreline and added three invaluable points to their Premier League tally, taking them to 15th with 14 points, which is a five-point buffer over endangered Ipswich Town.

Orel Mangala

Dyche’s days seem numbered though, and while his side stood firm against the rusty Old Gold, there are still some concerns at the rear, for sure.

Stats via Statmuse

This season, the Merseysiders haven’t had the same sheen, having conceded 21 goals from 14 matches, which isn’t the worst rate in the division but still pretty alarming when the goals are hardly coming either (Wolves thrashing notwithstanding).

With The Friedkin Group ready to complete a takeover from Iranian businessman Farhad Moshiri, it’s clear that an overhaul is going to be needed – both in the dugout and out on the grass. Several players have already been earmarked for departure, Michael Keane chief among them.

It’s perhaps telling that despite Jarrad Branthwaite’s likely high-priced transfer, surely arriving at some point in the not-too-distant future, has not changed the conversation around Keane.

And again, James Tarkowski is ageing and starting to show signs of splintering, having been lambasted for his “embarrassing” defensive display against Manchester United last week.

All this considered, Keane is still very much expendable and must be sold in January.

Everton must sell Michael Keane

Everton signed Keane from Burnley in 2017 for a fee rising to £30m, with Ronald Koeman, Everton boss at the time, saying that he was “delighted” to have got the deal over the line:

Michael Keane for Everton

He’s not really lived up to the price tag. Before signing, Gary Lineker hailed the centre-half’s “assured and impressive start” on his England debut, but since he’s “always struggling”, according to talkSPORT’s Perry Groves, for Everton, that success doesn’t do much for the irked Toffees fanbase.

According to various outlets, such as Football Insider, the Toffees are preparing to sell Keane after years of inconsistencies and frustration.

With the 32-year-old playing out the final year of his £80k-per-week contract, it’s understood that he will engage in negotiations with clubs from overseas – namely Italy’s Serie A and Major League Soccer over the pond – but is it worth TFG considering a winter sale.

Everton are not the richest outfit in the Premier League by half, but after a mostly uninspired start to the campaign, would be wise to dip their toes into the transfer pool ahead of a charge toward top-flight security over the coming months.

He’s notoriously effective in the final third, ranking among the top 1% of centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored per 90, as per FBref, but this is hardly his most important responsibility.

And such quality suffers a negation when noting that he has lost 57% of his ground duels in the Premier League this term, as per Sofascore, which is hardly the level of security that Dyche will want as he looks to stave off the threat of relegation.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

TFG might not claim much for his sale, but who knows, perhaps it will open up the door for a fresh venture. We all know it’s needed.

Ravindra Jadeja's epic all-round show gives India win inside three days

Match haul of nine wickets to go with his 175 not out; R Ashwin ends game with six scalps to go past Kapil Dev

Sidharth Monga06-Mar-20222:22

Jaffer: Jadeja can win a game with bat and a series with ball

It was a day of landmarks and milestones for India. Ravindra Jadeja became only the sixth man to score 150 or more and take a five-for in the same Test. R Ashwin went past Kapil Dev as the second-highest wicket-taker for India. In the process, Sri Lanka collapsed under the weight of a relentless India attack and lost 16 wickets in 67 overs to lose by an innings and 222 runs inside three days. Jadeja, who ended one wicket short of becoming the first man to score 150 or more in a Test innings and take 10 wickets in the same match, ended his third straight Mohali Test as the Player of the Match. The longest resistance Sri Lanka offered was a 17-over partnership in the second innings between Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva, followed by the 15 overs it took India to take the first wicket in the morning. Six wickets fell for 13 runs in 43 balls to encourage Rohit Sharma to enforce the follow-on.The bigger hauls might have gone to the spinners, but the fast bowlers added to their threat with their continuous interrogation of the batters, which meant the pressure was not released and spinners could get their breaks. The first wicket of the day went to pace, a bewitching slower ball from Japsrit Bumrah, which pitched within the stumps, beat Charith Asalanka, squared him up, hit him within the stumps, and would have gone to hit the top of off. With Pathum Nissanka fighting diligently at the other end, the rest folded in a strangely reckless manner. Niroshan Dickwella faced five balls from Jadeja, played three sweeps, not in control of any of them, and the final top edge settled with square leg placed two-thirds to the boundary. Suranga Lakmal tried an almighty slog the second ball he faced.Lasith Embuldeniya could not cope with a nasty skiddy bouncer from Mohammed Shami. Jadeja was too good for Nos. 10 and 11. Vishwa Fernando edged to second slip, and the injured Lahiru Kumara hobbled out to find out his feet didn’t move quick enough to cover the off stump, leaving Jadeja with a five-for and a shot at a hat-trick in the second innings, which was to resume immediately thanks to a rare follow-on.Ravindra Jadeja ripped through Sri Lanka on day three•BCCI

In the four overs possible before lunch, Ashwin gave India the first wicket just like in the first innings. With this edge from Lahiru Thirimanne to second slip, the result of dip and turn, Ashwin has taken Thirimanne out seven times for 50 runs in Tests, and 14 times for 140 runs in international cricket. Ashwin’s second, on the other side of lunch, was just as masterful, with the ball dipping on Nissanka to make him defend away from the body. The ball didn’t turn as much as the previous ones did, and the edge settled with Rishabh Pant, who continued to show how much he has improved as a wicketkeeper. It took a special delivery to get rid of Sri Lanka’s best batter, Dimuth Karunaratne. Shami angled it in from round the wicket, making him play, but the ball hit the seam and moved away slightly to take a soft edge that Pant took diving in front. His best grab was yet to come, though.Mathews and de Silva now got a bit of a partnership, but Jadeja came back to separate them. de Silva got too ambitious with the driving, and Jadeja inevitably got the ball to dip and draw an aerial response for short extra cover to take. The flood gates opened then with the next three wickets falling at the same score of 121. The first of those was Asalanka, edging Ashwin to slip in the first over after tea, which took Ashwin to 435 Test wickets. In the course of the match, Ashwin overtook Richard Hadlee, Rangana Herath and Kapil. Dale Steyn at 439 wickets remains in his sights.Once Jadeja got Mathews out with a ball turned from middle and leg, it was only a matter of time. Time has been short for Lakmal, who bagged his pair with a second heave in five balls of batting.Dickwella hung around with the tail, but Jadeja reached his ninth wicket with a lovely catch from Pant when the ball stayed low, turned less than expected and took a healthy deviation from the bat of Embuldeniya. The last two, though, went to Shami and Ashwin, but Jadeja wasn’t complaining.
