Sky Sports: Leeds also interested in Euro 2024 attacker alongside Ramazani

After seeing their attack picked apart by Premier League interest this summer, Leeds United have reportedly reignited their interest in signing a Bundesliga star for Daniel Farke.

Leeds transfer news

The Whites find themselves in a fairly frantic position in the final days of the transfer window, having lost Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray, Glen Kamara and, most recently, Georginio Rutter. The attacking midfielder completed his move to Brighton & Hove Albion to leave the side that helped Leeds reach last season's playoff final in tatters.

That said, as Transfermarkt have highlighted, those at Elland Road now have plenty of money to spend on reinforcements, which could reportedly see the likes of Manuel Benson and Largie Ramazani arrive to hand Farke some much-needed attacking additions.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Yorkshire club have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Ramazani from Almeria, with the winger set to undergo a medical before joining up with his new teammates and potentially another winger at Elland Road as soon as possible.

According to Graham Smyth of The Yorkshire Evening Post via Leeds All Over and Sky Sports' Tim Thornton, Leeds have reignited their interest in signing Roland Sallai after seeing their initial attempts knocked back by Freiburg earlier this summer. The Bundesliga club's stance has now reportedly changed, however, and the 27-year-old has become more attainable.

Imagine him & Ampadu: Leeds battling to sign £7m "absolute baller"

The Whites are reportedly interested in a swoop to sign the Premier League midfielder.

Of course, some will remember Sallai from the heartbreak he helped to inflict on Scotland at Euro 2024, assisting Kevin Csoboth's last-gasp winner to knock Steve Clarke's side out and give Hungary hope that eventually failed to turn into qualification out of Group A.

Alas, with just over a week left in the summer transfer window, Leeds will have to act fast if they want to secure the winger's signature.

"Determined" Sallai could replace Summerville

Replacing Summerville is no easy task. He is a player of Premier League quality, as he will likely show this season at West Ham United. But, Sallai is one of the candidates who should, on paper, slot straight into his role and thrive under Farke, especially when dropping down from the Bundesliga.

Roland Sallai for Hungary.

The 26-year-old has impressed in Germany's top flight, stealing the show for Freiburg at times, with eight goals and four assists in all competitions last season. Described as "determined" by former Freiburg manager Christian Streich, Sallai could now get the chance to pick up where he left off in an impressive Euro 2024 in the Championship this season.

Compared to Benson and Forbs, Sallai certainly has more experience at the top level, featuring in the Europa League last season. Of course, that means that his signature could come at a certain price, but Frieburg's reported change of stance may just open the door for Leeds to secure a cheaper deal.

If it is to be the Hungarian with Ramazani, then Sallai will be one to watch this season.

To spend some time at the crease personally and make contributions towards that … certainly proud as a leader and a player in this side that we were able to achieve some of those things and we’re looking forward to that final.”In the women’s category, Kerr won the Super Smash and the International T20 awards. The legspinning allrounder played a key role in the White Ferns’ wins over Australia in Brisbane last December and in Napier last month. He was equally dominant in the ODIs, hitting 225 runs, including his maiden century, in the three-match series against Bangladesh in March.Finn Allen, the 21-year-old opener who recently made his international debut, was named the Super Smash Player of the Year in the men’s category after scoring 512 runs at an average of 56 and a strike-rate of 193.Kyle Jamieson, a key member of New Zealand’s Test attack, was given the Windsor Cup for first-class bowling, his first NZC award. Jamieson had picked up 27 wickets during the season, including a haul of 11 in the final Test against Pakistan in Christchurch. In the Plunket Shield, he picked up 20 wickets in just three matches for Auckland, including a hat-trick at Eden Park Outer Oval.Stand-in captain Amy Satterthwaite was named the women’s ODI Player of the Year, courtesy 304 runs in six matches on her comeback trail.Former batsman Jeff Crowe was honoured with the Bert Sutcliffe Medal for outstanding services to cricket. Crowe represented New Zealand in 39 Tests and 75 ODIs between 1983 and 1990, captaining the side on 22 occasions. He was later appointed manager of the national team. Since 2004, Crowe has been an ICC match referee, overseeing 103 Tests, 301 ODIs and 137 T20s.

Kane Williamson replaces David Warner as Sunrisers Hyderabad captain

The franchise also announced there will be a change in their overseas combination for their match on Sunday

ESPNcricinfo staff01-May-2021

Kane Williamson will take over the Sunrisers Hyderabad’s captaincy from David Warner for the remainder of IPL 2021. The franchise has also announced there will be a change in their overseas combination for the match against the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday.Williamson’s promotion comes a day after Warner said he took “full responsibility” for the Sunrisers’ loss against the Chennai Super Kings, their fifth defeat in six games. A game prior to that he had described Manish Pandey’s omission from the starting XI as a “harsh” call by the “selectors”.Although he scored a half-century, Warner appeared a very frustrated figure while he batted in that match, unhappy with both his timing and the way he kept finding the Super Kings fielders instead of the gaps. Sunrisers somehow made it to 171 for 3 thanks to a fifty from Manish Pandey as well and some clever finishing from Williamson (26 off 10). But it did not prove anywhere near a competitive total.”I take full responsibility. The way that I batted was obviously very slow,” Warner told host broadcaster after the Sunrisers lost to the Super Kings by seven wickets. “I was hitting a lot of fielders and [was] very, very frustrated… Look I take full responsibility from a batting point of view. I felt [that with] Manish coming back into the team, the way that he batted was exceptional. And obviously Kane [Williamson] and Kedar [Jadhav] towards the back end there, they put some boundaries away and got us to a respectable total. I felt that we were probably just below par from where we were. But yeah look, at the end of the day, I’ll take full responsibility.”Williamson had captained the Sunrisers in the 2018 season when Warner was barred from the IPL for his involvement in the Newlands ball-tampering scandal. He topped the run-scorers’ chart back then with a tally of 735 in 17 matches and led the team to its second IPL final in history. Overall, Williamson’s captaincy record in the IPL reads 14 wins and 12 losses in 26 matches.Warner had a similar effect on the team when they won the IPL in 2016. He was their leading batter (848 runs in 17 matches) and has been one of the most consistent overseas performers in the tournament’s history.”The decision has not come lightly as the management respects the enormous impact David Warner has had for the franchise over a number of years,” the Sunrisers statement said announcing the captaincy change said. “As we face the remainder of the season, we are sure David will continue to help us strive for success both on and off the field.”Although the franchise hasn’t mentioned anything officially, it is possible Warner might not be part of their match tomorrow.

Why Arteta personally pulled plug on Arsenal signing £330k-per-week striker

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta personally pulled the plug on his side doing a deal for one £330,000-per-week striker in the summer window, with a report sharing exactly why he didn't fancy the big-name talisman.

Arsenal chase Premier League title after £91m summer window

The Gunners spent £91 million in total on five major signings for Arteta before the window closed last Friday at 11pm, including their permanent transfer of goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford.

"Incredible" Arsenal ace expected to return from injury scare vs Tottenham

There were plenty fearing the worst when the injury news broke.

ByBen Browning Sep 3, 2024

After Raya, Italy international defender Riccardo Calafiori, Euro 2024 winner Mikel Merino, shot-stopper Neto and, of course, Raheem Sterling joined Arsenal – with all of these new recruits now aiming to boost Arteta's Premier League title charge.

Sterling arrived at the Emirates Stadium at the eleventh hour on deadline day, and was unable to take part during Arsenal's disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Brighton just before the international break.

The 29-year-old comes as Edu Gaspar and co's most high-profile summer signing, and one which the Brazilian wasn't expecting to make.

"To be fair, we never planned really to sign him when we started the transfer window, just to be very transparent. For different reasons," said Edu on the late signing of Sterling.

"But we always say to everyone that you have to be prepared for every single scenario. So when that opportunity came to me, and I checked the squad, I checked how he plays, and spoke to Mikel of course.

"I spoke to Tim [Lewis], our vice-chairman, to check if everyone is comfortable for the step we are going to take, and it makes a lot of sense. Yes, it makes a lot of sense to have someone like him because I’m pretty sure he is going to add a lot [to] the squad."

Sterling could make his debut in Arsenal's next game, their crunch north London derby visit to Tottenham, and may well play a role in their following clash against title rivals Man City at the Etihad Stadium.

Arsenal were heavily linked with a new striker for much of the transfer window, and made a widely reported attempt to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, but they were also chasing a new winger and finally landed on one in Sterling at the last minute.

Why Arteta pulled plug on Arsenal signing Ivan Toney

Another number nine they were heavily linked with, and for a long time before his move to Al-Ahli, was Ivan Toney. Some reports claimed Arsenal were planning a late summer bid to sign Toney, but the transfer didn't come to fruition. Journalist Miguel Delaney of The Independent, writing an inside story this week, has explained exactly why.

According to the reporter, Arteta personally pulled the plug on an Arsenal move for Toney in the summer, with the Spaniard believing that he wouldn't have fit in with the group and there was little potential for chemistry with his current squad.

The England striker ultimately made a deadline day switch to Saudi Arabia, despite late rumoured interest from Chelsea, and is now on a lucrative mega-money contract of around £330,000-per-week. It was a bizarre end to the Toney transfer saga at Brentford, which had been going on for nearly a year, but Thomas Frank insists that he remains a Bees "legend".

“On the pitch, he has been a fantastic goalscorer, link-up player and leader. He has pushed the team, the squad and himself," said Frank on Toney's move to Al-Ahli.

“It’s a wonderful journey that we have been on together. Ivan helped the club and the team, and the club and the team have helped Ivan.

“I’m happy he has an opportunity to try something new in his life and career. We thank him for so many magic moments and wish him all the best for his next chapter. Ivan leaves as a Brentford legend.”

BCCI's top brass in UAE: IPL, T20 World Cup on the agenda

Discussions to be held on IPL bio-bubble norms, crowds, and hosting of the ICC event among other things

The BCCI’s top brass, led by board secretary Jay Shah, reached Dubai via a charter flight on Monday to finalise plans for the remainder of IPL 2021 as well as discuss the probability of the UAE hosting the men’s T20 World Cup this October-November. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly will reach Dubai on Wednesday to join talks with the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB).Shah’s contingent comprises Arun Dhumal (board treasurer), Brijesh Patel (IPL governing council chairman), Jayesh George (board joint-secretary), Hemang Amin (BCCI’s interim chief executive officer) and Dhiraj Malhotra (BCCI’ general manager of operations and tournament director for T20 World Cup).On Saturday, the BCCI was authorised by its members – the state associations – to shift the second half of the IPL to the UAE in September-October after the tournament was abruptly and indefinitely suspended in the first week of May. The BCCI had been forced to pull the plug at the halfway stage due to the growing number of Covid-19 cases in the bubble during the Ahmedabad and Delhi leg of the tournament. A total of 31 matches, including four playoffs, remain to be played. In its talks with the ECB, the BCCI is expected to firstly get the approval of the UAE government to host the IPL there. The discussions are also likely to go into the preparedness of the three UAE venues – Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah – and the mandatory requirements for creating the tournament bubble for the eight IPL teams. With players arriving from different parts of the world, and not just India, both boards would need to look at the quarantine requirements that need to be satisfied before the BCCI finalises the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the IPL.One other significant point likely to be discussed is around the vaccination for all those that would be part of the IPL bubble. Recently, the Abu Dhabi government approved the hosting of the remainder of PSL 2021 in the emirate on the condition that all six teams and rest of the stakeholders that will be part of the tournament bubble are vaccinated.Sourav Ganguly is expected to reach Dubai on Wednesday for meetings with the Emirates Cricket Board•International Cricket Council

T20 World Cup moving to the UAE?
The presence of the entire top wing of the BCCI in Dubai can be seen as a first move by the BCCI to shift the T20 World Cup to the UAE, which had been named as a cover for India. The ICC has not yet announced the final itinerary for the the 16-team World Cup.While India are currently slated as hosts for the event, the state of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country and the suspension of the IPL has triggered strong doubts over the country’s readiness. At the BCCI’s SGM on Saturday, Ganguly told the members that the BCCI would seek another month’s time to finalise whether India could host the T20 World Cup.One key point the BCCI team is likely to discuss with the ECB would concern the revenue-sharing arrangement for the tournament should it be hosted in the UAE. Recently Malhotra had said on a BBC podcast that while moving the T20 World Cup to the UAE will be the “worst-case scenario”, the BCCI will still want to retain the hosting rights. The main reason for that is the lucrative sum involved: every match in an ICC global event is worth about USD 250,000-300,000 for the hosting board. With 45 matches, that is a massive amount of money. The other point for discussion would be, if the UAE ends up hosting both the IPL and T20 World Cup, can the venues handle two back-to-back marquee events and the fitness of the pitches in such a scenario. A total of 76 matches will be lined up for the venues if both the IPL and the T20 World Cup are played there, excluding the warm-up matches for the latter. Both boards will also want to consider the prospect of opening up the IPL to crowds. In 2020, when the entire IPL was hosted in the UAE, the BCCI had opted not to allow crowds in. The upcoming PSL in Abu Dhabi, it has been confirmed, will also be played out behind closed doors.
