The opener hit 64 off 42 balls while the offspinner claimed three wickets to sink Sydney Sixers
The Report by Alex Malcolm04-Jan-2019 Not even out-of-control bushfires in Hobart could stop the Hurricanes from claiming a fifth straight win after another perfectly executed chase, this time over the Sydney Sixers at Bellerive Oval. D’Arcy Short made an outstanding 64 off 42 balls and George Bailey a stunning 30 from 17 balls to get the Hurricanes to the line, before Simon Milenko and James Faulkner finished the job with one ball to spare.Short become the second-fastest player to 1000 BBL runs, reaching the milestone in 24 innings, just two shy of Shaun Marsh’s record of 22. He looked set to finish the chase himself but was undone by superb yorker from Sean Abbott, who tried his best to keep his side in the game with two key wickets. But Bailey and Milenko struck three sixes between them in the last five overs to see the Hurricanes home.Earlier, Daniel Hughes had made a superb 61 to underpin the Sixers’ underwhelming total of 8 for 161. The Sixers were undone by an excellent spell from Johan Botha, who took 3 for 22 from four overs, including two wickets in the Powerplay. Hughes and Moises Henriques reclaimed momentum before Henriques was brilliantly run out by Short and Hughes fell to Botha.Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short walk out to bat•Getty Images
Botha’s back-to-back strikesThe Hurricanes’ captain Matthew Wade has been very flexible with his bowling changes in the Powerplays throughout the tournament. Through four games no bowler had bowled a two-over spell in the Powerplay, although a couple had bowled two one-over spells. After the first two overs of the innings cost 17, Wade turned to Botha. Joe Denly was clean bowled by a ball that didn’t turn and Botha conceded just a single from the over, so Wade left him on. Botha then had Justin Avendano caught behind with the first ball of his next over. He took 2 for 8 in the Powerplay as the Sixers’ momentum stalled at 2 for 45.Henriques caught ShortHughes and Henriques put together an excellent 67-run stand for the third wicket. Overs seven to 11 are normally among the lowest scoring of any T20 innings. But the pair took 37 from those four overs with some outstanding striking. They threatened to build a huge total before Henriques was undone by some brilliant fielding. When he missed a slog-sweep off Short, Wade fumbled behind the stumps and the ball bounced away from him. Hughes called Henriques through for a bye. Wade quickly zipped out to gather and throw at the non-striker’s end but the throw was well wide of the stumps. Short moved to his right, gathered the awkward throw and backhanded it onto the stumps to beat Henriques. The Sixers innings struggled from there. Wade brought back Botha to get Hughes while Jordan Silk had a rare failure miscuing a James Faulkner slower ball to cover. Faulkner took two wickets in the final over of the innings to finish with 3 for 36 but did concede a six and a four as the Sixers posted 161.The catch that wasn’tAfter Wade fell for just 15 early in the chase, all eyes turned to Short. He was restrained in the Powerplay reaching 23 off 18 balls as the Hurricanes made 1 for 43 from the first six overs. Short opened up his shoulders in the seventh over off Steve O’Keefe and hit him to deep midwicket. The Sixers’ best fielder Jordan Silk was stationed in the hot spot. Silk took the catch cleanly while tight walking the rope. His momentum took his third step over the rope and he threw the ball to team-mate Sean Abbott close by, but didn’t get the throw away before his foot hit the ground outside the rope.Short survived and added six to his total. He went onto hit two more sixes on his way to 64 from 42 balls to take control of the chase. Alex Doolan was also dropped on 9 in the next over by Josh Philippe, grassing a straight-forward skier, and he went on to make an important 26. Sean Abbott pulled the game back knocking over both Doolan and Short, the latter clean bowled by a sensational yorker. But the equation was a manageable 51 from 35 balls with seven wickets in hand.Bailey brillianceAbbott conceded just four runs from the 15thover as Bailey faced two dots in his first three balls. Henriques then gambled with the part-time legspin of Joe Denly in the 16th, figuring the ball spinning away from the right-handers was a better match-up than Ben Manenti’s offspin. However, the plan backfired. Bailey and Ben McDermott took 16 from the over.McDermott fell in the next over but Bailey found the rope again off O’Keefe. With 19 runs needed from the last two overs, Henriques turned to Abbott. He missed with two attempted yorkers and Bailey and Simon Milenko dispatched both length balls for six and the game was effectively over. Bailey fell to a great catch by Henriques in the last over but Milenko and Faulkner managed to find the remaining five runs.

West Ham are looking at alternatives to Vladimir Coufal and Emerson Palmieri, with a couple of other Irons full-backs also out of contract next summer.
Steidten looking at new defenders this January
Lead by technical director Tim Steidten, the east Londoners and their board are said to be working on plans for the looming January window. Just over two weeks remains until the transfer market reopens for business, and as reported by reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, West Ham's recruitment team are expected to be busy.
"Big voice" at West Ham now planning January exit as "many clubs" make move
Moyes has said he’s a real personality in the dressing room.
ByEmilio Galantini Dec 13, 2023
Most reports have indicated that a striker is Steidten's top transfer priority at West Ham, leading to links with £15 million Stuttgart star Serhou Guirassy as they work with what's been called a limited budget (ExWHUemployee).
However, there are also suggestions that West Ham are looking at new full-back options. Coufal's contract with the club expires in 2025 and is 31-years-old, meaning David Moyes' side may have to start considering the future where he's concerned.
West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal.
Aaron Cresswell and Ben Johnson are also set to leave next summer when their own deals run out, prompting reports that West Ham could look to sign new names in the winter. One player who's now been linked is Southampton star Kyle Walker-Peters.
Southampton could be tempted into Walker-Peters sale
TalkSPORT and their journalist Alex Crook have an update on the matter this week, claiming the Englishman could well leave St. Mary;s Stadium despite his excellent 2023/2024 in the Championship.
Walker-Peters is described as being one of Russell Martin's "standout" performers, yet his contract is due up in 2024. This could motivate the Saints to do a deal for him in January.
The east Londoners are eyeing a move for him next month, and Southampton "could be tempted" to sell Walker-Peters as West Ham target him. TalkSPORT claim a suitable bid would turn their heads, as Moyes and co look for alternatives to Coufal and Emerson.
Kyle Walker-Peters
The 26-year-old can play on either the right of left flank, making him a pretty enticing candidate given he could depart for an affordable fee as well.
Martin, commenting on the player's form in England's second tier, called Walker-Peters a "beautiful footballer". Meanwhile, BBC Radio Solent's Adam Blackmore claimed the former Spurs ace is simply "integral" to what Southampton are doing right now.
"I wonder how important he's become," said Blackmore (via The BBC). "You look at what happened in the summer [rumoured transfer interest] and you just wonder by the end of the season how important keeping him will have been. He's such an integral part of what they're doing. It's almost like the team is built around him to get the most out of him."
Walker-Peters is homegrown, in form and yet to even hit his peak. We believe the defender's contract situation should make him a priority target for West Ham if they want more quality full-backs to choose from.

Tottenham are now believed to be eyeing a major club's longest-serving player after Cristian Romero's recent injury blow, according to reports.
Spurs hit by suspension and injury crisis
The January transfer window could represent a very significant moment in Spurs' season, as Ange Postecoglou's side have been one of the Premier League's unluckiest teams when it comes to injuries and suspensions.
Tottenham "working" as Ange eyes "special" centre-back alongside Todibo
The Lilywhites have more than one defender on their radar.
ByEmilio Galantini Dec 26, 2023
Tottenham have been hit with a series of key absences in the last month and a half, with their 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in early November starting it all. Micky van de Ven and James Maddison were hauled off with long-term injuries during Spurs' first loss of the season back then, with Romero also suspended for a period.
Fast forward to now, their luck has scarcely changed bar a brief upward trajectory, with Tottenham now missing Romero again through injury.

The Lilywhites have as many as nine first-team players unavailable to face Bournemouth in their next league match, with Dejan Kulusevski (suspension), Yves Bissouma (suspension), Romero (injured), van de Ven (injured), Maddison (injured), Rodrigo Bentancur (injured), Manor Solomon (injured), Ivan Perisic (injured) and Ryan Sessegnon (injured) all set to miss the 90.
Spurs are particularly light in central defence, with Postecoglou now forced to play a makeshift centre-back pairing of Emerson Royal and Ben Davies yet again after Romero's injury.
It is believed that signing a new defender is a top priority for Spurs heading into the winter transfer window as a result, with Postecoglou suggesting as much to Sky Sports recently.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.
"We let Davinson Sanchez go after the window closed," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's defensive issues.
"We kind of knew we were taking a bit of a risk; we couldn't get the extra centre-back that we were trying to get in, and for the early part of the year that was fine. But once we lost Micky [van de Ven], and Eric Dier's had some issues as well, we don't have another centre-back."
New targets are appearing on a fairly consistent basis with January on the horizon, and it is now believed Tottenham are keen on Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.
Spurs now eyeing Gomez after Romero injury
Indeed, as per The Daily Mail and reporter Matt Barlow, Spurs are eyeing a move for Gomez after Romero's hamstring strain. The Englishman joins Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice, Lloyd Kelly of Bournemouth and Genoa's Radu Dragusin on their shortlist.
jarell-quansah-joe-gomez-liverpool-opinion
Nothing else is added other than Tottenham's interest, but we believe Gomez comes as an interesting option given he is Liverpool's current longest-serving player.
The 26-year-old possesses bags of Premier League experience as well, and while he isn't exactly a mainstay under Jurgen Klopp, former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman has called Gomez a "priceless" asset to have.
"He can play left-back, but not as well as Andy Robertson. Robertson is left-footed and wants to get forward more. That’s not Joe’s fault. He is a great defender and always does an incredible job for Liverpool.
"I would be gutted if he left because people like Gomez are absolutely priceless to you at a football club. If you go back to Real Madrid, they’ve got Lucas Vasquez and Nacho, who have both been at the club for over ten years. If you speak to any of their team-mates about what they think of them, they adore them."
The consortium will take over from IMG-Reliance, which pulled out of its deal following the suicide bomb attack in Kashmir that has strained relations between India and Pakistan

Two days after IMG-Reliance pulled out of its deal to produce television coverage of the fourth season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), a replacement for the remainder of the tournament has been found. The PCB has declared that a consortium of Blitz and Trans Group will produce TV coverage throughout the course of this season’s PSL from now on.”The Pakistan Cricket Board today announced the consortium of Blitz and Trans Group as the new live production partner for the HBL Pakistan Super League 2019,” the PCB said in a press release. “Blitz are the PCB’s broadcast partners in Pakistan, while Trans Group are the event management partners.”Blitz and Trans Group will start their coverage when the matches resume on Wednesday, 20 February, and will continue to provide the same high quality coverage which the followers experienced in the earlier games of the event.”The announcement by IMG-Reliance, an Indian company, that they would not be producing TV coverage of the PSL came on Sunday, three days after a suicide bomb attack in Kashmir killed 44 Indian paramilitary troops, severely straining relations between India and Pakistan. The acrimony spilled over into cricket, not just with IMG-Reliance’s decision, but with TV channel DSports ceasing broadcasting of the PSL in India. Cricketgateway’s website, which has provided online coverage of the PSL for the past two seasons, has also stopped providing its coverage in India.IMG-Reliance’s decision left the PCB scrambling to find a replacement within the two days that the PSL was on a break for before games resume in Sharjah on Wednesday, The deal with Blitz and Trans Group goes some way to assuaging fears that the PSL would be left without a production partner, a major concern given TV revenue was overwhelmingly the largest source of income for the tournament. There was also speculation that the India-Pakistan clash at the World Cup on June 16 in Manchester may be in jeopardy. It led to outgoing ICC CEO David Richardson to say that “no indications” had been sent from either board that the match would not take place but that the ICC was “monitoring” the situation.
South Africa no longer have the pressure of winning the series upon them, and are free to experiment ahead of the World Cup

Big PictureWhen Sri Lanka last won an ODI, farming had not been invented, and woolly mammoths were roaming the planet. Don’t look it up on Statsguru, but that is what it feels like. Every recent series plays out the same way. The captain – generally there is a new one every couple of series – arrives confident that Sri Lanka’s long-standing one-day problems have been sorted. They are sure that the last clot of losses has been learned from, and that the injection of new personnel will bring fresh energy. Then they get out on to the field and players who had been in form are no longer in form, players who had been out of form are doubling down on their bad form, and players who are constantly threatening to get into decent form keep threatening without actually quite getting there. They have lost each of the six ODIs they have played this year. Of their last 10 completed matches, they have won only one. This terrible run of ODI results over the past three years has cost various Sri Lanka captains their jobs. Upul Tharanga, Thisara Perera, Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews have all been jettisoned as captain in the last two years. With no wins from seven attempts under his leadership, it is not a stretch to say that Lasith Malinga’s job is also now on the line. If Sri Lanka don’t snap the losing streak, there’s a chance they go to the World Cup with a new captain.South Africa, meanwhile, no longer have the pressure of winning the series upon them, and are free to experiment with their XI. There are World Cup spots still up for grabs, and the middle order batting – while pretty good in Durban – still has a little room for improvement. Questions that require answers include: Is Dale Steyn up to another World Cup? Can they dream of life beyond Hashim Amla (who will miss this match due to personal reasons)? Is Anrich Nortje worth investing in?With two ODIs to go before the selectors have to name the World Cup squad, there is more riding on these dead rubbers than usual.Form guideSouth Africa WWWWL (completed matches, most recent first) Sri LankaLLLLLIn the spotlightAiden Markram has been decidedly modest in ODIs so far, having made only one fifty from 16 innings. But in domestic List A cricket this season, the man has been in such scorching form, that it would be almost unthinkable for the selectors to leave him out of the XI on Wednesday. In his last three matches for the Titans, Markram has hit 169, 139 and 85 – the second of those scores coming in a world-record sixth-wicket List A stand with Farhaan Behardien. If Markram can carry that form through into international one-day cricket, South Africa will feel they have options in their top order.Though often ineffective in ODIs last year, Kusal Mendis finally seems to be regaining his footing in the format, hitting 60 in the first one-dayer, then 41 in the third. With Sri Lanka’s batting order now substantially weakened (Kusal Perera has joined Angelo Mathews on the hamstring injury list), there is a little extra responsibility on Kusal Mendis – something he generally relishes.Dale Steyn bowls•Getty Images
Team newsSouth Africa will be tempted to rest Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir for the dead rubber, while bringing Steyn into the fold for the first time in the series. JP Duminy may enter the XI as well.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Faf du Plessis (capt.), 4 Rassie van der Dussen, 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller, 7 Andile Phehlukwayo, 8 Dale Steyn, 9 Anrich Nortje, 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Tabraiz ShamsiWith Kusal Perera now out of the frame, Angelo Perera may have a chance to play his first ODI in almost three years.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 2 Avishka Fernando, 3 Angelo Perera, 4 Oshada Fernando, 5 Kusal Mendis, 6 Kamindu Mendis, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Isuru Udana, 9 Akila Dananjaya, 10 Lasith Malinga (capt.), 11 Kasun RajithaPitch and conditionsThe weather in Port Elizabeth is forecast to be cloudy at times, but no rain is expected. The pitch generally has something in it for the spinners.Stats and trivia South Africa have now won their last five bilateral ODI series, defeating Zimbabwe, Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka twice. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, last won a bilateral ODI series in mid-2016, against Ireland. There have been two wins in tri-nations tournaments since, however. Both of those tournaments have featured low-ranked teams. In three previous ODIs against Sri Lanka, Markram averages 7.66, with a high score of 20. Those games had been in Sri Lanka, however.
