Klopp could fill Liverpool’s Fabinho void with bid for “ridiculous” £60m titan

Liverpool supporters have a hold on cautious optimism that the Premier League title can be fought for this season, with Jurgen Klopp's summer transfer work steering the club back on course after a turbulent 2022/23 campaign.

Some might look at the league table and cry, 'Liverpool are third, just two points behind first-placed Arsenal; the sole defeat came in the most contentious circumstances against Tottenham Hotspur – of course we can challenge for the title.'

Of course, this is true, but with only 13 matches gone so far, there is much work to be done and plenty more football to be played before a more crystallised league ladder materialises.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The notorious winter period will unleash an onslaught of obstacles for teams to weave their way through, and Klopp will understand the importance of remaining grounded until the new year paints a clearer picture.

The new year will also open the winter transfer window's shutter, and while Liverpool have impressed over the past several months, it would be wise to invest to ensure that the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City do not pull away.

Liverpool transfer news – Douglas Luiz

The player seemingly on the radar of all these aforementioned Premier League title challengers is Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz, who has been at the heart of Unai Emery's revolution.

According to 90min, high-flying Villa are determined to ward off interest from Arsenal, City and Liverpool for their Brazilian midfielder, who has certainly been among the standouts in English football this year.

Arsenal could sign "remarkable" £52m target who's similar to Rodri

Pep Guardiola sold the 25-year-old to the Villans for £15m in 2019, while Arsenal failed with three bids in 2022; Liverpool's intrigue is more nebulous, though the Reds have made it clear that they will enter the race if Emery's side alter their stance.

Douglas Luiz's season in numbers

After just 13 matches in the Premier League, Luiz has scored five goals and supplied two assists; this is a stunning return for a holding midfielder, and an illustration of his growth into "the complete player", as has been said by The Athletic's Jacob Tanswell.

Of course, goals and assists are not the touchstone of peak performance for one of Luiz's role, but it's a pretty neat bonus that he has weaved impressive attacking intent into his skill set, having once been lauded for his "ridiculous" ability by journalist Sam Tighe.

As per FBref, the £75k-per-week machine actually ranks among the top 9% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 16% for assists and the top 195 for shot-creating actions per 90.

However, the ten-cap Brazil international has certainly not shirked away from his defensive duties while seeking to contribute to the attack, completing 89% of his passes in the Premier League, averaging 2.3 tackles and 6.1 ball recoveries and winning 59% of his contested duels.

Why Liverpool should sign Douglas Luiz

Liverpool have been performing admirably this season and will surely compete for the Premier League title if their seasonal form so far is sustained, but to achieve this it is crucial that a player of Luiz's ilk is signed in January.

It might be tricky, with Villa pushing for Champions League qualification this term and under no obligation to sell, but if Liverpool were to meet the £60m valuation that has purportedly been placed on his signature to swat away suitors then it's possible that Emery and co could acquiesce.

Klopp welcomed four midfield additions in the summer and has successfully re-energised the ranks, but this could be the move to truly rekindle the Anfield side's position of power as one of Europe's most threatening and ferocious outfits – capable of fighting for the biggest honours around.

While the Reds have enjoyed an exciting new-look engine room, Fabinho hasn't really been replaced after his summer sale and creative star Alexis Mac Allister has been utilised in an unnatural deep-lying role to compensate.

To be honest, it's hard to argue that it's not working given Liverpool's position in the Premier League, but replacing the former starring member has got to be high on the agenda for the Liverpool bosses.

Fabinho's Liverpool career

It was a poignant way to bow out. Fabinho had been instrumental to Klopp's Liverpool side for years, signing from Monaco in a £44m transfer in 2018, threading the team together from the centre of the park to resounding success.

Over 219 matches for Klopp's side, Fabinho posted 11 goals and ten assists and won the full sweep of silverware under the German's guidance, with the 29-cap Brazil international even dubbed "the best" holding midfielder in the world by Gary Neville in 2019.

The 30-year-old had undoubtedly declined last season and was even branded as "awful" by commentator Jamie Carragher for his insipid displays.

Unfortunately, he appeared to have run out of gas and his spluttering efforts typified Liverpool's woes as they foundered and finished fifth, missing out on Champions League football this year.

Having been so important for so long, Fabinho will have been disappointed not to end on a high. However, he can proudly state that he played a central role – literally and figuratively – in one of the most illustrious spells in Liverpool's modern history.

When Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad came calling and presented a £40m proposal in July, it seemed a no-brainer for all parties, and he made the move with the adulation of Merseyside's sea of red.

Liverpool have managed in his absence thus far, sure, but Mac Allister will fall asleep dreaming of the halcyon days in his favoured No. 8 role, and a move for Fabinho's compatriot Luiz could mark a natural continuation of the club's development.

Luiz is not quite a carbon copy, arguably more complete and refined in the ever-evolving modern game, and while Fabinho's defensive industriousness probably edges the Aston Villa star's, he could make a massive impact at Anfield as the perfect successor.

Burnley eyeing "brilliant" player for Kompany to boost survival chances

Things could finally be looking up for Burnley in their return to the Premier League under Vincent Kompany. The Clarets picked up just their second win of the campaign last time out against fellow newly-promoted side Sheffield United, smashing the blades 5-0 in stunning fashion. Now, Kompany and co will be looking up and hoping that this is the start of a resurgent run to get themselves out of relegation trouble. As things stand, they sit 19th and two points adrift of safety.

What could help their survival chances is the January transfer window. Reports suggest that those at Turf Moor are eyeing a move for one particular defensive reinforcement.

Burnley transfer news

Burnley opted for players with the potential to turn into important Premier League options rather than those with experience in England's top flight during the summer transfer window. Kompany welcomed the likes of James Trafford, Aston Villa's Aaron Ramsey, Zeki Amdouni and Michael Obafemi, who are all yet to really make a season-defining impact. With the January transfer window fast approaching, however, it looks as though Burnley are set to go again in search of key players. And that could lead them to one specific target.

According to TeamTalk, Burnley are eyeing a move to sign Sunderland right-back Trai Hume. The Black Cats may reportedly sell the right-back for profit, making way for Timothee Pembele to step into the role. If Burnley do want to secure the Northern Irishman's signature, they will reportedly have to fend off interest from Championship sides Leicester City and Leeds United in what could be a busy race come January.

Trai Hume

Burnley could certainly do with some defensive reinforcements and Hume ticks the box as a young right-back, who should only improve. When the winter window swings open, it will be interesting to see if the Clarets make their move.

"Brilliant" Hume could boost Burnley's survival chances

There's no doubt that Kompany's side need to improve defensively if they are to stay up. Burnley's defensive record is only better than Sheffield United's, who sit below them and bottom of the Premier League, having shipped five against the Clarets last time out. Hume can help solve some of Burnley's problems, however, if he arrives in January. Hume's stats prove he is more than ready to step up to England's top flight too.

It comes as no surprise when looking at the numbers that Hume has been at the centre of praise by those at Sunderland, including from teammate Daniel Ballard, who told Belfast Live:

“He’s been brilliant for us. He came from nowhere last season; he wasn’t playing too much, got his chance and he really took it. I’ve played next to him for a year-and-a-half now. He’s a fantastic player, a real technician, someone who Northern Ireland are really lucky to have. I think he has a wonderful future. We know each other very, very well.

“I know what he likes to do, he likes to move into midfield a lot. You can trust someone a lot more when you have built up that relationship, I feel comfortable and we’ve got a good chemistry. Trai is playing in the Championship, he loves a tackle and I think Northern Ireland will enjoy that as much as Sunderland fans do.”

Matthew Short and Seb Gotch produced an unbroken century stand to maintain Victoria’s unbeaten start to the Sheffield Shield season as they chased down 276 after a brief wobble in the afternoon.Jackson Bird had given Tasmania early hope when he bowled Travis Dean and had Peter Handscomb, a player on the fringes of the Test side, caught on the leg side but Marcus Harris and Cameron White then added 85 to settle the chase.Harris, who became just the fourth batsman to cross 400 runs for the Shield season, ensured talk of a potential Test call didn’t fade with 67 before falling lbw to Gabe Bell and when White went in the next over Victoria were 4 for 145 with Tasmania sniffing a chance. But that was the last of the success for the home attack on a surface that refused to break up, as evidenced by how Tasmania battled back into the match with 476 in their second innings after being skittled for 81 on the opening day.Short and Gotch forge a matchwinning stand of 131, Gotch striking 11 boundaries in his 66 and Short finishing the match with a six off Bird.

BPL stints put Taskin, Shafiul, Nayeem on selectors' radar for ODIs

Mashrafe Mortaza said Sabbir Rahman could also interest the selectors, but his ban will still be in place when Bangladesh play the ODIs in New Zealand, staring February 13

Taskin Ahmed is in contention for a recall to the ODI side on the back of his recent BPL form, according to ODI captain Mashrafe Mortaza. The Bangladesh selectors are likely to announce the squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand next month, on Wednesday.Mashrafe also mentioned Sabbir Rahman among those who are likely to interest the selectors, but his six-month ban will still be in place when Bangladesh play the ODIs in New Zealand, from February 13 to 20.”I think Taskin and Shafiul [Islam] are doing well [in the BPL],” Mashrafe said. “Sabbir has had one good knock (an 85 for Sylhet Sixers). The hope is for him to keep performing. There is unlikely to be a big change. There are some places which may be up for grabs if these players keep doing well. But there’s still a lot left in the tournament.”Sabbir is unlikely to play in the first of the three Tests too, with his ban valid until February 28, the same day the first Test starts in Hamilton. The only way for him to play for Bangladesh before that is if the BCB relaxes its rules to make room for a batsman who is seen as a potential No. 6 in the ODI line-up.”The type of innings he played against us, that’s the sort of batting we have expected from him in the Bangladesh set-up. But it is still early [days] to talk about.”If we are thinking about an extra batsman, we can also talk about Mosaddek Hossain. Among the spinners that we usually pick as Shakib [Al Hasan]’s back-up, Nayeem Hasan has done well,” Mashrafe said.Taskin has shown consistent pace, lengths and variation during the BPL so far, taking two four-wicket hauls for Sylhet Sixers among his 14 wickets. He last played an ODI in October 2017 and has been out of the reckoning due to fitness and form issues since March last year. Two other bowlers – Shafiul and Nayeem – too have earned Mashrafe’s mentions, having bowled reasonably well during the tournament.Among those whose ODI spots could be under doubt for the New Zealand tour are Nazmul Islam, Abu Hider and Ariful Haque, none of whom have so far had impressive performances to show. Nazmul remains a back-up option for Shakib in those conditions, and that position could go to Nayeem, the promising 18-year-old offspinner.Taskin may take Hider’s place while Sabbir – if he returns before February 28 – could yet be taken in Ariful’s place after the latter failed to come up with a sizeable score despite being kept in the senior side for a considerable period.

Spurs could repeat Maddison masterclass with move for £20m "assist machine"

Ange Postecoglou will be delighted with his Tottenham Hotspur side's victory over Newcastle United on Sunday evening, ending an abject run of form that had seen four losses and one draw from five Premier League matches.

This bout of results highlighted Spurs' fragility, still beset with residual problems from last year's eighth-placed finish, before the Australian's summer appointment.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

The quality is there – such was evidenced following the tremendous ascent to the top of the table over the first months of the campaign – but reinforcements are needed in January if the London club are to fashion an impressive end to the term.

Tottenham transfer news – Samuel Iling-Junior

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Tottenham have bustled their way into pole position to sign Juventus winger Samuel Iling-Junior, with the young Englishman causing quite the storm with his precocious performances.

The 20-year-old is also on Newcastle United's radar but appears to be more likely to head to London, with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy making the player his top priority for the January transfer window.

It's understood that the Old Lady would be willing to accept a £20m offer for Iling-Junior, whose contract in Turin expires in 2025, which makes for an affordable and interesting proposition for Postecoglou and co to consider.

How Samuel Iling-Junior compares to James Maddison

Iling-Junior is a former Chelsea academy prospect who departed for pastures new in Italy, learning his craft with Juventus and since wedging his way into first-team reckoning, albeit very much on the periphery this term with no starts in the league, though he has placed one assist.

Praised for his "flamboyant" style by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Iling-Junior is versatile and endowed with electric pace, with Old Lady manager Massimiliano Allegri fielding him both as a left-back and further up the channel during his time at the club.

Juventus forwardSamuel Iling-Junior.

Given that the £11k-per-week star is left-footed, Iling-Junior tends to linger out wide and stick to the touchline, where he can unleash balls into the box and stretch opposition defences, making good on his skill as an "assist machine", as was said by journalist Michele Neri.

As per FBref, the talented dynamo ranks among the top 4% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals, the top 16% for shot-creating actions, the top 17% for progressive carries, the top 14% for successful take-ons and the top 11% for tackles per 90.

This range of abilities highlights just how well he could perform in Postecoglou's fluid Spurs side, perhaps even proving to be a repeat of the summer deal to sign James Maddison from Leicester City for £40m in the summer.

Now, while Iling-Junior's compatriot is also among the finest creators in the Premier League, having been described as a "magician" by Statman Dave and creating a remarkable 2.9 key passes per game, assisting five times, to draw concrete comparisons is rather tenuous.

dejan-kulusevski-james-maddison-tottenham-opinion

But both are exciting attacking outlets and, more importantly, Iling-Junior is being pursued by Newcastle, just as Maddison was before Spurs snapped up his signature.

The Magpies failed with a £50m offer in 2022 and ultimately missed out when Postecoglou made his move, but it must be one that Eddie Howe rues given that the 26-year-old is among the most influential players on English shores.

Having moved into pole position for Iling-Junior, the Lilywhites could repeat the feat, and must now do so to continue the resurgence and cement a permanent spot among the leading names at the forefront of the division.
