Liverpool fans open to club bringing back Klopp’s coach Lijnders

Liverpool fans were left stunned last month when Jurgen Klopp’s right-hand man Zeljko Buvac departed suddenly.

The 56-year-old had worked as Klopp’s assistant manager throughout the pair’s career in coaching.

The club stated that Buvac had left for personal reasons and would not be returning before the end of the season.

However, the Reds did emphasise that his position at Anfield had not changed.

Despite this, there are rumblings that the tactician will not be returning to Merseyside, and now The Telegraph are reporting that Klopp’s former coach Pep Lijnders may return.

The Dutchman left Liverpool’s setup in January to pursue a solo career as manager, but after failing to guide NEC Nijmegen to Eredivisie promotion, he left the role.

Lijnders is very familiar with the Reds given that he worked at the club from 2014 under former manager Brendan Rodgers and continued to assist when Klopp took over in October 2015.

It is unclear whether the coach wants to return to Anfield, but the fans are all for it.

Revealed: 79% of Newcastle fans want Ben Arfa back this summer

Newcastle are almost certain to bolster their attacking ranks this summer, but should they pursue a deal for former fan favourite Hatem Ben Arfa?

You’d be hard pushed to find a player with as much wasted talent as Hatem Ben Arfa (we’re looking at you Mario Balotelli), but Newcastle fans would love to see the Frenchman back on Tyneside.

The 31 year-old left Tyneside permanently in 2015, and was nothing short of excellent for French side Nice, grabbing 17 league goals in 34 games to guide them to a top four finish.

[ad_pod ]

His fantastic form earned him a dream move to PSG, which has turned into a bit of a nightmare for the talented but wayward winger, and he will be out of contract this summer.

If there is one man who could control and guide Ben Arfa, it’s probably Rafael Benitez, and while the Frenchman’s lack of defensive effort could stop him being a regular starter, he would certainly be an incredible impact player to have on the bench.

Newcastle fans clearly agree with this statement, as a whopping 79 per cent have said they would like to bring Ben Arfa in on a free signing this summer.

England’s creative midfielder: Jesse Lingard vs Dele Alli

There is a tendency for fans and pundits to select their England team in a similar way to fantasy football; their desire to see England cast off the shackles and throw caution to the wind for once leads to tactical recommendations that would not be seen either at club level or in other elite international teams.

Sometimes, even the managers are swept up in it; Roy Hodgson fielded Danny Welbeck, Raheem Sterling, Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge all in the same team in World Cup 2014 and Dele Alli, Adam Lallana and Harry Kane alongside Rooney and Sterling in France two years ago, with just Eric Dier protecting the defence.

Gareth Southgate’s formation for England’s penultimate Russia 2018 warm-up match, the 2-1 win over Nigeria at Wembley – where he fielded Alli and Jesse Lingard either side of Dier, with Sterling behind Kane – hinted at a similarly adventurous approach.

That system may work against the ‘smaller’ nations, such as Tunisia and Panama, who England face in their first two Group G matches, where England need to be on the front foot and the threat of a counter attack isn’t so great.

However, as uninspiring as it may be, a two-man holding midfield axis of Dier and Jordan Henderson may well be needed against the elite nations, should the Three Lions get that far.

It won’t go down well with those who want to see a tubthumping England side, but it is a tactically mature idea; even Brazil, famed for their Samba style, now shield their defence with a holding duo, well aware that their current crop is not vintage and that having elite attackers isn’t that useful without keeping the back door shut behind.

It remains to be seen if Southgate thinks that way, but it may well be that Alli and Lingard will go from playing alongside each other in midfield to competing for the most advanced spot in the engine room.

Looking at the stats makes the perception of the two players’ seasons interesting; Lingard is seen as having the season of his career, while the Alli is perceived as having dropped his level in the past year.

Yet, the Tottenham man is ahead on all the statistical measures and his closer relationship with Harry Kane is something else that may give him the edge.

Also, Alli is more of a central midfielder, who can burst forward at this stage of his career but may also end up playing further back anyway; whereas Lingard is a converted winger, and now a number 10.

He is disciplined and hard working, but Alli feels a more natural fit to settle into the midfield trio, arriving late onto crosses to slot home.

But who would you choose? Let us know by voting between Alli and the £31.5m-rated Lingard below…

Southampton must hijack Brighton’s bid to sign Alireza Jahanbakhsh

According to Dutch media outlet Voetbal Inside, Brighton and Hove Albion are in talks with AZ Alkmaar over a deal for winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh, rated at €25m (around £22m) by the Eredivisie outfit, and Southampton should be watching developments closely.

What’s the word, then?

Well, VI report that the Seagulls are negotiating with the Dutch club to bring the highly-rated Iran international to the Premier League, with AZ demanding around £22m for the top goalscorer in the top flight of the Netherlands last term.

VI say that the 24-year-old could join the south coast club on a four-year deal with the option of a fifth if a deal is agreed, as Chris Hughton looks to strengthen his squad following an impressive debut campaign in the Premier League.

One of their main problems was scoring goals though, and adding Jahanbakhsh to the squad should go some way to eradicating that issue given his record during the 2017/18 campaign.

How did he do last season?

He was excellent, and showed why he is ready for a big move to the Premier League.

The tricky winger scored a remarkable 22 goals and provided a further 14 assists from out wide in 39 appearances in all competitions, according to Transfermarkt.

The 24-year-old brings far more than just goals and assists though, and he showed why he is feared so much by opposition defenders by the fact he successfully completed 111 of the 178 dribbles he attempted 33 Eredivisie outings last term.

Why should Southampton hijack Brighton’s move?

Like the Seagulls, one of Saints’ main issues during the 2017/18 campaign was their shortcomings in the final third, and adding Jahanbakhsh to their squad would surely sort that out.

The Iranian wideman’s brilliant record shows that he could make a huge impact at St Mary’s, and at £22m he is well in the south coast outfit’s price range – even if he would be a club-record purchase.

The 24-year-old would certainly be a welcome addition for the likes of Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini, who were often starved of service as Southampton, whose move for a 26-year-old midfielder would surely seal Mario Lemina’s exit, only narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.

Aston Villa fans do not want to sell Bjarnason

Birkir Bjarnason is currently being linked with a move away from Aston Villa in this summer’s transfer window.

The 30-year-old joined Villa from FC Basel in January 2017, and he has scored four times and registered three assists in 37 appearances for his English club in all competitions.

[ad_pod ]

Last term, Bjarnason, who is believed to be attracting interest from Italy, scored three times in 23 Championship appearances as Steve Bruce’s side reached the final of the playoffs before losing to Fulham.

The midfielder, who is valued at £1.8m by Transfermarkt, is currently with Iceland at the 2018 World Cup, but his nation have failed to make it through the group stages of this summer’s tournament.

According to Takvim, Trabzonspor are extremely interested in signing Bjarnason this summer, and the Villa supporters have been reacting to the transfer speculation.

There are some Villa fans who are entirely against the sale, and others have put extortionate values on the midfielder, which is just another way of saying that the Iceland international should be kept ahead of the new Championship season.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Newcastle should avoid Bruno Varela and strengthen other areas of the squad

According to Portuguese news outlet Record, Newcastle United are interested in signing Benfica goalkeeper Bruno Varela.

What’s the story?

The 23-year-old Portuguese ‘keeper returned to Benfica last summer after leaving the club for a year, and the 6ft3 shot-stopper went on to make 29 appearances in the Liga Nos over the season.

Varela has represented Portugal at every level up to U23 and has consolidated his place as Benfica’s no.1 despite his age.

According to the report, Watford are also interested in signing the youngster who is valued at £7.2million on Transfermarkt.

Not an area that needs strengthening

If Rafa Benitez does indeed move to sign Bruno Varela, it would be a surprising move for Newcastle.

The one addition Rafa Benitez has made to the squad is the signing of Martin Dubravka, and it seems unlikely that Benfica’s no.1 would move to play second fiddle to him.

He is clearly a young talented ‘keeper, but Newcastle have other areas that need investment and a substitute goalkeeper isn’t a priority at the moment.

Varela probably wouldn’t come cheap either, and if Newcastle have a limited transfer budget, it seems silly to spend a large proportion of it on a player who’s unlikely to feature much next season.

Is this the final missing piece in Liverpool’s puzzle?

After weeks of nightmares about that embarrassing 6-1 thrashing by Stoke on the last day of the season, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers can finally breathe a sign of relief after Sunday’s result against Stoke City.

In what was rather a dull game for the neutrals – Liverpool managed to scrape a 1-0 win thanks to a moment of pure brilliance from the magician Philippe Coutinho.

Perhaps the best thing Rodgers can take from the match is that his defence looked a hell of a lot more solid than it did last year. There is confidence that previously wasn’t there and although it is only one game into the season, you can see the club has take an important step forward.

Simon Mignolet has come on leaps and bounds since he was dropped for a short spell last season. He was composed and confident between the sticks, probably due to the effect of those in front of him.

[ffc-gal cat=”liverpool” no=”5″]

Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez add a lot more ability to the flanks for the Reds, too. Youngster Gomez looks like he’s been around for years, which is incredible when you consider he is just 18-years-old and was making his Premier League debut.

Martin Skrtel was his usual solid self, and perhaps most surprisingly Dejan Lovren looked more like the player he was in his Southampton days. Fans shouldn’t get carried away, but it was definitely an improvement.

However, if Liverpool really want to nail down a Champions League spot  this season the then they really do need to sign another quality centre-back to partner Skrtel.

Selling Daniel Agger was one of the worst things Rodgers ever did because the pair worked brilliantly together in defence.

The side have still not replaced Jamie Carragher at the back and if the Slovakian gets any kind of injury, then Liverpool are left with just Sakho, Lovren and Kolo Toure. It might just be time to panic.

Lovren has played only one good game since he moved to the club last summer and it looked like he was involved in football’s version of Space Jam. His talent had vanished.

With more confidence he will hopefully get better, but it is way too much of a risk to use him as the first choice centre back.

Sakho is currently his main rival, but unfortunately the player is in more of a battle with himself, between inconsistent form and constantly niggling injuries, the Frenchman spends as much time in the team as he does out.

He has the ability to be a brilliant defender, but something just always seems to get in the way and knock him a step backwards.

As for the final member of the trio, Kolo Toure, it is very surprising to see him still playing at such a high level. The Ivorian’s role surely has to be more off the field than on it.

He has bags of invaluable experience that can work wonders for some of Rodgers’ younger players. Unfortunately his legs appear to have gone and the veteran defender can’t be considered as a reliable back up any longer.

There are a number of suitable players out there across Europe. Liverpool are still a big club and should be able to attract top quality players.

Names like Stephan De Vrij, Ezequial Garay and Jose Fonte are just some of the many candidates that could come in and help solidify Rodgers’ defence.

They are players who would help fill the rest of the side with confidence, and can be relied upon to step up when needed to take control if the Reds are in trouble.

In such a make-or-break season for Rodgers, he should want to cover every base possible. And once he adds a centre back, he will have all he needs to ensure his side can make a swift return to the top four.

Is this Liverpool newbie dreaming the impossible dream?

Liverpool new boy Roberto Firmino says that he signed for the Reds in order to challenge for major honours, and has already targeted Champions League qualification with his new club this season.

The Brazil midfielder joined Liverpool in July for initial fee of £21.3m from German club Hoffenheim, where he scored 49 goals from 153 games as an attacking midfielder.

Firmino has featured in all of Liverpool’s first four games this season, yet he hasn’t registered a single goal or a assist so far. The closest he has come was striking the post from 30-yards out in Liverpool’s recent 3-0 defeat to West Ham.

“I had a dream about playing in England,” he told the official Liverpool FC magazine.

“[I want to] fight for titles and play in the Champions League. So moving here really is a dream come true.”

[ffc-gal cat=”liverpool” no=”5″]

However, is it just a dream, or can it actually be a reality for Liverpool? At this stage it is difficult to make judgements that are fully accurate. Liverpool are good, but quite simply don’t really look good enough to challenge and defeat the very best there is to offer.

Their four Premier League games so far have yielded seven points, though it perhaps could have been more as Brendan Rodgers’ men were by far the better side in their 0-0 draw against Arsenal. Nevertheless, the seven points represents a decent start for the Reds.

You would say it is a good enough tally without being overly spectacular. However, from the first four games it looks like Liverpool (putting the West Ham game aside) will have more of an emphasis on keeping clean sheets and being tougher to break down, rather than the attacking approach Rodgers has preferred his side to play in the past Three clean sheets four games is testament to that.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the goals haven’t exactly been flying in at the other end of the pitch either, with just two goals in four games and zero goals scored in their last two outings. Liverpool, even with the introduction of the likes of Christian Benteke and Firmino in attack, look far more toothless than they ever have under Rodgers before.

Perhaps it is the change in approach from the Northern Irishman, but grinding out 1-0 wins doesn’t come quite as naturally to Rodgers as it does to Jose Mourinho, for example, and the Merseysider’s could struggle as a result.

Benteke and Firmino will need some time to find their feet at Anfield, but even when they eventually do I don’t see the goals flowing as freely as they used to. Without Raheem Sterling there is a real lack of pace in the Reds’ attack, which is often pivotal to breaching backlines in the Premier League.

There will be an over reliance on Philippe Coutinho to dig Rodgers’ side out of trouble, which is a lot of pressure on the Brazilian. He might embracer that kind of pressure, but it will ultimately be too much for him to get Liverpool back amongst the big boys.

The same could be levelled at the Reds this season – it will be too much to get into the top four and challenge for title’s like Firmino dreams of.

At the moment it looks as though it will remain an unfulfilled dream.

Liverpool manager frustrated with eight players out for Europa League clash

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed his frustrations at the huge number of injuries since arriving at Anfield, with eight first-team players unavailable for their Europa League clash against Rubin Kazan this Thursday, Daily Star reports.

Klopp was recently appointed as the new Reds boss following Brendan Rodgers’s sacking, and took charge of his first game last weekend which ended in a 0-0 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

But now after three weeks, the German will finally make his Anfield debut in a European clash, but he will be without a host of star players for the fixture.

Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino, Christian Benteke, and Dejan Lovren are all struggling with respective niggling injuries, while Danny Ings and Joe Gomez will but out longer after undergoing surgeries.

“Most of them not available for the next games,” he said.

“Sturridge is getting better and better. Yesterday was the first time outside. The target for him is Sunday. The other players are no option for Sunday.

“Ings and Gomez had their operation. It was a positive operation and they are on their way back. No complications.”

Jon Flanagan is also another long-term absentee, failing to make a single league appearance last season due to a knee injury.

And finally youngster Jordan Rossiter sustained a hamstring problem while on England U19 duty, which angered the Klopp as the 18-year-old played three games in five days.

“Flanagan getting better and better. Rossiter is a special story, I’ve never heard a player at 19 years having to play three games in five days. Now we have to wait for him. I will find a way to talk to somebody about this. It’s not OK.

“We have three players back in training, Firmino, Benteke and Lovren. More options but not really starting options. We will see what we need for this game. It’s very good for us that these players are back.”

Five bargain buys to consider for Aston Villa on FM16

Villa, as usual, have had to change managers this season, and you have your work cut out with the squad you are left with on FM16.

Tim Sherwood’s abysmal reinvestment of the revenue from Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph leaves you with a weak squad and a lot of work to do to keep the Villains in the Premier League.

Whilst the loss of Ron Vlaar leaves you short defensively, the injury to Jordan Amavi makes one of your most talented players unavailable at the start of your save.

Remi Garde is yet to right the wrongs at Villa Park, but there are elements of talent that you should be able to squeeze some quality performances out of. Jack Grealish and Carles Gil should be able to provide you with a creative spark, whilst Jordan Ayew can develop into a useful forward.

Although it could be quite a challenge, here are FIVE bargains for your side…

Adriano

‘Big’ Adriano has become a figure of fun for much of the football world since his fall from grace. However, his technical stats are so magnificent that he could do a job for you on a free transfer on FM16.

If you carefully overlook the work-rate and natural fitness stats, Adriano will, at the very least, be a decent option from the bench to hold the ball up.

Particularly with the inexperience of Ayew and Grealish, the powerful Brazilian will be a useful addition, even with his high wages.

Matt Phillips

Phillips is often looking to leave QPR at the start of saves and the winger has a great deal of pace to trouble Premier League defences.

Whilst he may not have offered much consistency during his time in the Premier League, Phillips would be a useful wide man to help you stretch the game and counter attack against the biggest sides in the league.

The prospect of Phillips joining Agbonlahor and Sinclair makes for quite a lethally quick front line.

Renato Sanches

This Benfica youngster is one of the few players who has a similar potential to Your Tielemans.

Sanches will be relatively costly, but should be available for under £10 million if you negotiate shrewdly and the 17 year old is one of the most gifted starlets you will find.

Expect a great deal of creativity and a player who can develop into a playmaker from deep or a number 10 role.

Joris Mathijsen

Mathijsen might be considered a budget version of Ron Vlaar, but the Dutch international is a good addition on a free transfer and provides a great deal of experience at the highest level.

The physio team might be a bit concerned by the Dutchman’s susceptibility to injuries, but it is all about depth on Football Manager 16 and Mathijsen will be a decent option, even if only from the bench.

Emerson Hyndman

The Fulham youngster, like Renato Sanches, will not come cheaply, but, with his potential, any deal you make for him can become a real bargain.

Hyndman is a hard working midfield player who will consistently create chances and cause the opposition problems throughout your save.

The young american has the talent to dominate in midfield and will perfect to great chances for the pacey Jordan Ayew.
