Man Utd could sign Osimhen alternative in "machine" who’s outscored Haaland

Manchester United's strikers haven't quite found their shooting boots so far this season, young Rasmus Højlund United's sharpest shooter so far in attack with only three goals to his name after a summer move from Atalanta in Italy.

The midfield have stepped up where the strikers have been lacking, Casemiro surprisingly the Red Devils' top scorer overall this campaign with four strikes whilst the likes of Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes are tied with Højlund in the charts on three goals each.

Lacking a feared striker that was a staple of Man United teams from the past – figures such as Robin van Persie, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney devastatingly effective when needed in attack – the main focus in the January transfer window could be swooping in for a dangerous forward player who can score a crucial goal in the blink of an eye to reinstate a clinical goalscorer to the side.

Napoli's talismanic figure Victor Oshimen has been linked with a move to the Red Devils in the past, but the Nigerian striker's potentially hefty price tag could halt that move from ever getting off the ground.

This could lead Man United down an alternative avenue for fresh personnel as a result, ten Hag's men linked instead to Stuttgart's break-out talent Serhou Guirassy who is continuing to take the Bundesliga by storm.

Man United's interest in Guirassy

According to reports in Spain, via TEAMtalk, at the back end of September, the Red Devils are interested in the Guinean attacker off the back of his goal-laden past few months, joining the lengthy queue of clubs expected to fight it out for Stuttgart's star man when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Stern competition in the form of Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool is expected for Guirassy's services, the 27-year-old in high demand after a lethal start with Stuttgart this season after only joining the club permanently this summer after a successful loan spell from Rennes.

Expected to be available at a far cheaper asking price than Osimhen – who reportedly boasts an asking price of £150m – it'll be intriguing to see where Guirassy ends up following the conclusion of the transfer window and whether or not he's pulling on the Red Devils strip to give Erik Ten Hag's men some much-needed firepower next year.

If his Bundesliga statistics are anything to go by so far this campaign, Guirassy is a naturally lethal goalscorer ready for the demands of the Premier League.

Guirassy's numbers this season

Cited as a "machine" by football presenter Salim Baungally after scoring a ludicrous ten goals from his opening five games of the new Bundesliga season, Guirassy is currently outscoring Manchester City machine Erling Haaland for the German club – netting a ridiculous 14 goals in the division overall, from just eight matches.

Incredibly, the one-time Lille striker is being pipped to the golden boot currently by Harry Kane, the former Spurs man notching up 15 goals already for Bayern Munich.

Guirassy's importance to his side has been exemplified in the last two contests he's missed owing to a hamstring injury, Stuttgart losing both games to top-flight opponents Hoffenheim and Heidenheim narrowly when their star number nine has been absent.

Averaging 1.07 non-penalty goals per 90 over the last year according to FBRef, that is remarkably clear of the aforementioned Osimhen who boasts 0.75 non-penalty goals per 90 in the last 365 days. Having scored 31 goals in 39 outings for Napoli last term, he is a real monster in the penalty area but his efforts in 2023/24 are below that of Guirassy, netting six in ten. Impressive, but not quite as good as his cheaper alternative.

Man United will hope they can land the clinical 6 foot 2 attacker this January on a reasonable deal in the wake of other suitors scrambling to secure the Guinea international.

If so, the Dutch head coach would have a talismanic striker up top who could potentially decide games on a knife's edge and steer Man United to wins where they might have otherwise fallen short.

Chappell deal continues Notts' signing spree

Zak Chappell will push for England recognition at Trent Bridge after leaving Leicestershire

Zak Chappell has agreed a three-year deal with Nottinghamshire.Chappell, the 22-year-old Leicestershire all-rounder, has been limited to 14 games in his first-class career but, such is his obvious promise, was the subject of interest from several of the richest county sides including Surrey, Warwickshire and Lancashire.Chappell becomes the second Leicestershire player to leave as an improved season under coach Paul Nixon nears its end: Ben Raine, a powerful allrounder, is also returning to his native north-east after agreeing terms with Durham.Capable of bowling fast and powerful batting, Chappell made 96 from No. 10 on first-class debut and has this season taken his Championship wickets at a cost of 15.93. While there are some concerns about his injury record, such is his high potential – he is an all-rounder somewhat in the Andrew Flintoff mould – many clubs were prepared to take a chance on him.”We are really disappointed to lose Zak as he was an important player across all formats for us,” Paul Nixon, the Leicestershire head coach said. “He has bowled some excellent spells of fast bowling and made some useful scores with the bat.”We really wanted him to continue his development with us, and we made him a very good offer to keep him with us. Sadly, Zak has opted to sign for Nottinghamshire to play Division One cricket, and the club wishes him well in the future.”Chappell’s departure will remind Leicestershire supporters of another transfer of a tall, fair-haired fast bowler that forever aggrieves them – that of Stuart Broad 11 years ago.His move sustains a strong recruitment drive from Nottinghamshire who have already added Ben Duckett and Ben Slater to their side in recent days. In the case of Chappell, it is understood he was impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment of Peter Moores, the Notts head coach, to his development. It is understood the club also remain keen to attract 22-year-old Joe Clarke to Trent Bridge. It will not have gone unnoticed that all those players have developed at non-Test grounds.”The opportunity to test myself playing Division One cricket with Nottinghamshire is an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down,” Chappell said. “I want to play for England in the future, and I think the best chance to do that is by playing in Division One.

Shaw v Siraj the highlight in Mumbai's march to final

After impressing in his first Test series, Prithvi Shaw presented a case to be considered for the shorter formats but not without some luck

Saurabh Somani in Bengaluru17-Oct-2018AFP

After heavy rain ended the contest early, it was Mumbai who marched into the Vijay Hazare Trophy final by recording their ninth consecutive win in the competition, but Hyderabad, who weren’t even sure of their participation until 12 hours prior to their first fixture, can walk away a proud side.Rohit Rayudu, the younger cousin of Ambati Rayudu, displayed admirable composure to make 122 not out. Struggling on 52 off 95 at one stage with the lower order for company, he ensured Hyderabad almost doubled their score in the last 15 overs to post a competitive 246 for 8. It wasn’t enough, though, with Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer scoring half-centuries as Mumbai won by the VJD method. A drizzle that turned into a torrential downpour forced the players off the field with Mumbai 155 for 2 in 25 overs. They didn’t return. The spice in the contest was provided by two people who were part of India’s dressing room until four days ago. There are many who think Mohammed Siraj and Shaw ought to be in the mix for India in limited-overs cricket too, and not just Test cricket. Shaw, of course, announced his entry in Tests in grand style, with a Man-of-the-Series performance against West Indies on debut.Siraj was considered unlucky for not making his own debut against West Indies, with the team management ignoring his red-hot form and opting to give the cap to Shardul Thakur, who limped out of the attack with his Test career just 1.4 overs old.On Wednesday, both Shaw and Siraj showed why pitch-forking them to the top level in ODIs might be a good idea. Siraj finished with first-spell figures of 3-0-33-0, while Shaw hit a fifty off just 34 balls, but for anyone watching both were winners.Siraj was introduced in the fifth over, but the stage had been set in the third over itself. Shaw had just slogged Akash Bhandari’s legspin wide of long-on for a boundary when he pulled up clutching his right shoulder. Play was held up while the physio ran out to treat him, and Shaw resumed, but the shoulder was still troubling him.Siraj opted for a short-ball attack. It would perhaps have been his go-to tactic anyway, having seen that Shaw could be uncomfortable when the ball was climbing into his body, particularly against the West Indies quick Shannon Gabriel. With an injured right shoulder, it made sense to force Shaw to use his bottom hand more.Siraj had Shaw in some trouble in the first over, and the action peaked in his next. The first ball went to the long-on boundary, but off a toe-ended pull that just cleared mid-on. Siraj then got his bouncer on target, and Shaw got a top edge on a pull to fine-leg. M Ravi Kiran ran in, got both hands to the ball while tumbling forward, and saw it pop right out. Three balls later, there was a similar chance, but easier. Standing not as far back, Ravi Kiran reached another top-edged pull in time, but the ball popped in and out again.Siraj had handled the first drop reasonably calmly, but he was seething now, standing mid-pitch with hands on his hips and eyes that could bore a hole in the ground. Captain Ambati Rayudu gave vent to his feelings, staying mid-pitch after Siraj had walked off and glaring at the fielder.Ravi Kiran had to bowl the next over, and he had Rayudu and Siraj at mid-off and mid-on. Both put their anger aside to huddle with the bowler and offer words of encouragement, with Siraj patting him on the back. With shoulders almost visibly drooping, Ravi Kiran opted to play safe, bowling slower balls in the channel to get a quiet over in.Siraj came back for his third over. Perhaps expecting a shorter one, Shaw hung back to the second delivery. It thudded in full and it was ball hitting bat rather than the other way round. The bat flew out of Shaw’s hands, and he was clutching his shoulder again. If Siraj thought he had won, there was one final act left, and the over ended with three short balls going for 6, 6, 4. Siraj’s effort and fury should have got him Shaw’s wicket, now it worked against him, with Shaw ready to pounce, and the balls not rising quite as high either. The last shot took Shaw to his half-century, making it the fourth time in four innings in this tournament that he had passed the milestone. The scorecard will show that Shaw took 29 runs off the 14 balls he faced from Siraj. Scorecards don’t always capture the whole story – but perhaps the watching selectors might have.

Arsenal star who lost the ball 28x had the game of his life v Sevilla

Arsenal returned to winning ways on Wednesday evening, as the Gunners defeated Sevilla 2-0 at the Emirates in the fourth fixture in Group B of the Champions League.

Due to results elsewhere in the group, Mikel Arteta’s side were unable to confirm their progression into the last 16, with just one point remaining to seal their advance into the knockouts.

After beating Sevilla just over two weeks ago in Spain, the north Londoners returned to home soil to take a maximum of six points from Diego Alonso’s experienced squad in the group stages.

Arsenal game in numbers vs Sevilla

It was a dominant display from the hosts, as Arsenal claimed 62% of possession and recorded 11 shots on goal compared to Sevilla’s single effort that came in stoppage time to reinforce the one-sided nature of the affair.

After being restored to the starting XI due to Eddie Nketiah’s absence, Leandro Trossard netted his second Champions League goal of the season on the 29th-minute mark, finishing a superb team goal crafted by Jorginho and Bukayo Saka.

The chances kept coming for Arsenal, however, it wasn’t until the 64th minute that the Premier League outfit extended their lead, with Saka switching from creator to scorer to join Trossard in claiming his second goal of the tournament this term.

The victory made the two defeats that plagued Arteta’s side’s form last week seem far away, as the north Londoners took full control of the group, stretching their lead at the summit to four points with two fixtures remaining.

leandro-trossard-bukayo-saka

There were a host of top performers on show in red and white on the night, with scorers Saka and Trossard receiving an abundance of praise, however, one star was described as having “the time of his life” by TNT Sports commentator, Darren Fletcher.

Gabriel Martinelli’s game in numbers vs Sevilla

Gabriel Martinelli caused havoc down the left flank for Arsenal throughout the evening, with his first-half performance causing Juanlu Sanchez a mountain of problems in frequent waves. Indeed, as per Squawka, No defender has been dribbled past more times (5) in a Champions League fixture this season than Juanlu was in the opening 45 minutes.

Lauded as “electric” by Arsenal figure Eduardo Hagn for his performance, the Brazilian claimed an assist for his efforts in the final third, however, his contribution to the scoreline was far from his most notable success in the game.

Juanlu had a night to forget because of the 22-year-old’s dribbling ability, as the Spaniard was dribbled past a magnificent nine times in 90 minutes, losing to his opponent both in and out of possession.

Martinelli showcased a tireless display on the wing, not only completing nine successful dribbles, but also portraying his combative side to win a stellar ten ground duels and one aerial duel to dictate the tempo on the left side, via Sofascore.

As highlighted in the table above, the winger was at his searing best against Sevilla, with his performance awarded an 8/10 match rating by Matt O’Connor-Simpson via GOAL, who added that the Spaniards “couldn’t live with him” during the tie.

There is still work to be done for Arsenal in the Champions League before qualification to the next round is confirmed, however, a collectively stellar performance on Wednesday night made the task in hand far easier.

ICC appeals for information, England brush off new spot-fixing allegations

Al Jazeera’s latest documentary has claimed that up to 15 international matches in the 2011-12 period had been subject to spot-fixing

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Oct-2018

Cricket fans only ever want one thing•AFP

The ICC has appealed to Al Jazeera to share evidence with it, after the broadcaster released its second documentary on alleged corruption in cricket. The documentary has claimed that up to 15 international matches in the 2011-12 period had been subject to spot-fixing.Al Jazeera has claimed to have obtained recordings of a person identified as Aneel Munawar – who is said to work for the crime syndicate D Company – revealing details of fixed matches to an Indian bookmaker. Munawar was also at the centre of Al Jazeera’s previous documentary on corruption in cricket, which alleged that the Chennai Test in December 2016 and the Ranchi Test in March 2017 had been subject to spot-fixing by England and Australia players. In response to those claims, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Australia (CA) had said there was no credible evidence linking any of their players to corruption. The ICC had then asked Al Jazeera for its cooperation in investigating these allegations, including sharing “un-edited and unseen evidence” – which it later said the broadcaster had refused to hand over. It had also sent out a public appeal to help identify Munawar. The ICC has now made another appeal to Al Jazeera.”The ICC is committed to working to uphold integrity in cricket,” Alex Marshall, the general manager of the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit, said in a statement. “As you would expect we will again take the contents of the programme and any allegations it may make seriously and will investigate fully.”However, I must refute the assertion that cricket does not take the issue of corruption seriously, we have more resources than ever before working to rid our sport of corruption.”The investigation into these allegations has already commenced and will run alongside a number of other live unrelated investigations. When considering the claims, we will work with professional independent betting analysts.”As with the first programme we have, and will continue to ask for the cooperation of the broadcaster. We have made repeated efforts to engage with the broadcaster as it can play such a crucial part in the full and thorough investigation it has called for.”We do welcome the commitment from the broadcaster to share the files with Interpol and, I hope, other law enforcement agencies who can act upon the information and support us in ridding the sport of these criminals.”Of the 15 matches Al Jazeera claimed were subject to spot-fix attempts in the 2011-12 period, seven involved England, five Australia, and three Pakistan. Among the matches mentioned were all three Tests of Pakistan’s series against England in the UAE in January-February 2012.The ECB called Al Jazeera’s information “poorly prepared”, but said it had looked into the allegations and found no evidence against any England player.”ECB takes its responsibilities on anti-corruption and preserving the integrity of cricket very seriously,” an ECB spokesperson said. “Whilst the limited information we have been given by Al Jazeera is poorly prepared and lacks clarity and corroboration it has been properly assessed.”Analysis of this by the ECB Integrity Team has cast no doubt on the integrity or behaviour of any England player, current or former.”The materials we have been given have been referred to the ICC’s Anti-Corruption unit and we will continue to work with them, as is the correct procedure for protecting the game. We are also working closely with the PCA (Professional Cricketers’ Association) and keeping them informed.”On Monday, a day after the release of the documentary, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a statement* responding to the allegations, terming them “unsubstantiated”.”The PCB is committed to its fight against corruption in cricket. It has and continues to cooperate, assist and coordinate with the ICC’s Anti Corruption Unit in respect of investigations related to international cricket.”The recent allegations of corruption emanating from a documentary released by a broadcaster are under review jointly by ICC and PCB’s Anti Corruption Units. The broadcaster has not been forthcoming with provision of any evidence whatsoever in the absence of which their allegations remain unsubstantiated.”PCB in the recent past has been proactive in uprooting the menace of corruption and has charged and banned numerous cricketers for failing to abide by the Anti Corruption Code. It stands by that resolve.”CA, meanwhile, had been aware of Al Jazeera’s plans to release a second documentary, and of the Australia matches mentioned in it. James Sutherland, CA’s then chief executive, had said a CA integrity unit investigation had been conducted into the claims.”Although not having been provided an opportunity to review any raw audio or footage, our long-standing position on these matters is that credible claims should be treated very seriously, and investigated,” Sutherland said in late August. “Cricket Australia’s Integrity Unit have conducted a review of the latest claims by Al Jazeera, from a known criminal source, and, from the limited information provided by Al Jazeera, our team have not identified any issues of corruption relating to current or former Australian players.”We have handed all material over to the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit to enable them to fully investigate and we will continue to cooperate with the ICC.”There was one game involving New Zealand among the 15 named by Al Jazeera and NZC also requested the broadcaster to share information. “New Zealand Cricket takes anti-corruption extremely seriously and has no wish to undermine its integrity by commenting on unsubstantiated allegations,” said NZC public affairs manager Richard Boock. “We would, however, join the ICC and Cricket Australia in urging Al Jazeera to make all information relating to the allegations available, in the interests of natural justice and good journalism.”*October 22, GMT 1450 The story has been updated to include the PCB’s response
