Sir Alex Ferguson didn't often get it wrong in the transfer market when in charge of his great Manchester United sides.

This is a manager who signed Wayne Rooney, nurtured the development of Cristiano Ronaldo, poached Robin van Persie from his great rival Arsene Wenger, acquired Rio Ferdinand from fellow rivals in Leeds United and brought Ole Gunnar Solskajer, the scorer of a Champions League final winner, to great fame.

There are, of course, plenty of other names. But for every Ronaldo and Rooney, there is a Bebe, a Phil Jones of the world to plague Fergie's success in the transfer market.

The Scot is renowned as one of the best, if not the best manager the game has seen, but that doesn't mean he didn't get a few things wrong.

After all, the great tactician once suggested that Jones could become the greatest player in the Old Trafford club's history. That was a prophecy that never came true. Indeed, Jones is now 31 and without a club having endured injury hell in Manchester.

That said, he is perhaps not the biggest example of lost potential. Step forward a certain Juan Sebastian Veron.

How much did Man United sign Veron for?

Back in 2001, United went to great lengths to welcome the Argentine to the club. Indeed, they would eventually part ways with £28m to secure his services.

That was a British transfer record at the time, a record that has now soared to Moises Caicedo's £115m in today's market. How times change, but keep that in mind for later.

Learning his trade in Argentina as a young star, it was in Italy where Veron really rose to prominence. Enjoying time with Sampdoria, Parma and then Lazio, the box-to-box midfielder who seemingly had it all in his locker, registered 25 goals and 43 assists at those clubs before moving to United.

It was clear, therefore, what Ferguson thought he was getting. A playmaker who could boost their hopes of winning the Champions League after three successive league titles.

Not just a player capable of influencing play in the final third, United signed the midfielder due to his ability to make an impact defensively. Indeed, as per Sofascore's historic World Cup statistics, Veron made four key passes per game during the 1998 edition, while also making three interceptions and 2.2 tackles per game.

To put those numbers into modern-day context, Bruno Fernandes tops the charts at United for key passes per match this season with 3.2. Casemiro, meanwhile, leads the way for average tackles with 2.7 and Aaron Wan-Bissaka holds the title of most interceptions with 1.4, as per Sofascore.

When considering his multi-faceted style of play, it's hard to believe he underwhelmed at United, but that's exactly what happened.

How many games did Veron play for Man United?

During his stint under Fergie, Veron played 82 times, scoring 11 goals and registering 15 assists. For a midfielder, contributing a goal once every three games isn't an awful number.

You would, however, expect more for the price tag. Paul Pogba, for context, bagged 39 goals and supplied 51 assists in 226 games after returning to United, contributing to a goal once every 2.5 games.

So, why was he thought of so poorly? Well, these words from Sir Alex will help you to understand.

"Juan Veron was capable of exceptional football and was talented. But, at times, he found the Premiership a bit difficult," Ferguson stated. "He was a European player and that was where we got our best form from him."

That was seen in the stats too, with the Argentina international having a hand in 14 goals during 22 Champions League outings, to just 11 involvements in 51 Premier League appearances.

Not moving abroad, and instead heading to Chelsea for £15m perhaps wasn't the best idea, therefore. After scoring just once in west London, a loan move to Inter followed and then he headed back to his homeland with Estudiantes.

When Veron arrived at Man United's training base, a session that was currently in progress ground to a halt.

As Mike Phelan recalls: "He turned up at Carrington when we were doing a training session. He walked across and the training session stopped. All the players were like, ‘Wow, it’s Veron!’ — Scholes, Giggs, Keane, the lot. They all shook his hand. He made such an impact.”

Unfortunately, that impact was seldom replicated on the pitch, as Paul Scholes once remembered. Detailing why Veron didn't succeed in England, he believed it was due to a lack of their understanding together in the middle of the park:

"Yeah, me and Veron were a disaster," Scholes told Gary Neville. "I think me and Anderson did it once – just, no, it's not working, is it? Just two lads who don't care about defending – don't know the [DM] position that well. But it worked better with a Michael [Carrick] or a Roy [Keane] or a Nicky [Butt], who were brilliant playing a position they knew."

Such an eventuality was frustrating for a player who held so much talent in his locker. Ferguson may well have grown tired of Veron's tendency to fluctuate, but he still holds fond memories.

"He hit a pass for Beckham with the outside of his foot, and no back-lift, and it bent away round the defence. Beckham ran onto it and lobbed the goalkeeper. In moments, he might be sublime," Ferguson remembers.

The inflation of transfer fees in football throughout the years has been rather ridiculous. Only this summer we saw the British transfer record that Veron once held broken twice.

First Declan Rice joined Arsenal for £105m, before Caicedo headed to the Argentine's former employers Chelsea for £10m more.

Chelsea knew what they had on their hands but also understood that men's football could make their 6 foot 2 defender develop both in stature and skill. After three senior outings in the Papa John's Trophy,

Huddersfield came in for the 18-year-old and signed him on loan in 2021. In this formative season, Colwill grabbed headlines as part of an excellent Carlos Corboran Terriers side that just missed out on promotion.

Although he scored an own goal in the playoff final defeat against Nottingham Forest – he'd widely impressed. His expected transfer value (xTV), as per Football Transfers, rose from around £3.5m (€4.1 million) in July 2021 to £6.3m (€7.3 million) after the playoffs.

What have people said about Levi Colwill?

If Colwill's adjustment to the Championship was impressive enough, more plaudits arrived when he went on another loan, this time with Brighton in the Premier League. Under yet another young and eye-catching tactician in Roberto De Zerbi, Colwill fit into a brilliantly progressive young side like a glove.

The squad that term averaged an age of 23.64 yet showed skill beyond its years. Even in just 17 league appearances, Colwill helped the group effort at Brighton to push the club to a record sixth place Premier League position last term.

Throughout his half-season, there were precursor glimpses of traits he has slowly become synonymous with. Colwill's xTV rose again last term, from £9.1m (€10.6 million) in August '22 to £10m (€11.6m) in June '23.

Out of the boardroom and back on the pitch, pair this with England U21s Euro victory – as well as impacting a Chelsea team in transition and the defender's horizons grow ever-broader. Mauricio Pochettino said in September of an England call-up:

"Levi is a player who performed really well last season, and at the Under-21 Euros, and now started the season really well with Chelsea. He is a big talent, a player who can play in different positions, centre-back and full-back. He is a great character. He is a great player and I’m happy for him. I’m hoping the next international break we have more players involved."

Gareth Southgate was another to gush over his performances, lauding a wide array of attributes within Colwill's game.

“He showed a really good temperament in the League last year, and in the summer with the Under-21s he was outstanding. Levi has a real maturity about his calmness with the ball. He’s got good physical attributes. He’s got speed and the ability to defend the box well.”

Statistically, how good is Levi Colwill now?

On a more statistical basis, compared to other centre-backs – Colwill's numbers parallel his ascent in value.

FBref shows that Colwill excels both in attack and defence, despite at times being described by some as quite one-footed. In a bracket of players that contains the likes of Napoli's Amir Rrahmani, Real Madrid's David Alaba and Inter's Alessandro Bastoni – Colwill sits in a high percentile for numerous statistics. His purely progressive mindset is reflected.

For the somewhat optimistic shot-creating actions, he's in the top 3%. For expected non-penalty goals and assists – he's in the top 2%. So, he offers a potential threat.

Most likely this is aerial, as he wins 2.86 per 90 (top 15%) yet that's not all. What's more impressive are the 78.57 passes attempted per 90 (top 5%) and the 1.23 progressive carries per 90 (top 11%).

Admittedly, his core defensive aspects could be improved – i.e. blocks and tackles. However, that could be perceived more on the team collective than just Colwill. Additionally, the Premier League season (at the time of writing) is a mere seven games old.

What's Levi Colwill worth now?

Since his formative loan spell at Huddersfield, the likely soon-to-be England starter has become a real market mover – with an increased price of (value) for any potential suitors. In an era of extreme Boehly-bolstered spending not immediately reaping success,

Colwill's ascent shows that once again – after examples of Reece James or the distant success of Declan Rice – the Blues should potentially put more onus on their homegrown talents.

The 6 foot 2 centre-back who has also been compared to club icon John Terry, has risen to an xTV of £15.2 m (€17.5m) with a transfer window peak of £18.2 million (€21.1m) in August '23.

As of June '23, the Daily Mail had reported that not even bids in excess of £40m would make Chelsea even consider selling Colwill. That was amid interest from Brighton with the Seagulls looking to bring him back to the Amex Stadium after a successful loan spell.

Furthermore, he recently put pen to paper on a six-year deal, that's how important they see him for the future, as his financial worth and indeed personal worth to the club grows more and more at Stamford Bridge.

Por fim, vale destacar que em entrevista ao programa”Super Papo Vascaíno”, o presidente se mostrou novamente contrário a votação on-line e chegou a ameaçar a retirada de sua candidatura caso a decisão do presidente da Assembleia Geral Extraordinária (AGE), Faues Mussa, aconteça.

Desde o início de nosso mandato, esta gestão tem adotado uma série de medidas para depurar a base de sócios, aperfeiçoar a administração deste cadastro e, consequentemente, assegurar a realização de eleições limpas.

Entre essas ações, podemos destacar:

. Processo de anistia
. Recadastramento dos associados
. Unificação das bases de sócios estatutários e sócios torcedores
. Contratação de empresa terceirizada, uma das maiores gestoras de programa de sócio do Brasil

É importante ressaltar que foi esta gestão a responsável pelo processo de anistia de 2018, que, à época, permitiu o reingresso ao quadro associativo de mais de 2,5 mil sócios, entre os quais 1.324 sócios gerais.

O processo de anistia foi uma decisão minha. E tomamos o cuidado de lançá-lo no primeiro ano da gestão, portanto o mais distante possível do período eleitoral. Da mesma forma, temos nos empenhado para que os sócios gerais anistiados possam participar da eleição, direito este legítimo, que a Junta Eleitoral do Clube tentou tirar.

A maior prova da lisura da Diretoria Administrativa na gestão da base de sócios e na elaboração da relação de associados encaminhada à Junta Deliberativa é que essa lista não foi contestada nem pela Junta e muito menos pelos diversos grupos políticos participantes do processo eleitoral.

Todas as contestações e ações judiciais relacionadas à lista se referem aos critérios adotados pela Junta Deliberativa para definir a relação de sócios aptos a votarem e serem votados. Não ao trabalho da Secretaria e desta Diretoria Administrativa. Trata-se de algo inédito em muitos e muitos anos de eleições do Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama e motivo de orgulho para esta Diretoria.

Diante de todas as ações tomadas por esta Diretoria para assegurar a realização de eleições limpas, anseio de todos os vascaínos – ou quase todos -, não podemos compactuar com as manobras feitas por um determinado grupo político, com a conivência e cumplicidade do Presidente da Assembleia Geral.

Muitos dizem lutar por uma eleição sem fraude no Vasco da Gama, mas, quando têm a chance de contribuir para isso, seus atos não correspondem às suas palavras.

Não há eleição meio limpa.

As manobras para a realização de uma eleição on-line, com uma empresa contratada pelo Presidente da AGE e, portanto, pela chapa que ele representa e na qual estão seus dois filhos e dois sobrinhos, são uma afronta ao Estatuto: nenhum fornecedor pode ser contratado sem a anuência da Diretoria Administrativa. Mais do que isso: essas manobras abrem margem para que as eleições do Vasco sejam fraudadas.

O que pedimos ao sócio vascaíno, independentemente de sua predileção ou posição política, é que ele atente para a gravidade dos fatos narrados.

Não há qualquer garantia de eleição limpa com a realização de votação on-line.

Compartilhamos com os sócios dois importantes documentos, que merecem ser lidos por todos com atenção. Os dois documentos estão anexados no fim do texto.

Um destes documentos é uma carta endereçada aos Presidentes de Poderes do Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama pelo sócio João Eduardo Nery de Oliveira, especialista em segurança da informação e com experiência em eleições públicas, tendo participado de diversos pleitos organizados pelo Tribunal Superior Eleitoral e por Tribunais Regionais Eleitorais.

Eduardo Nery diz textualmente que o processo de eleições pela Internet no Vasco da Gama é o “caminho certo para possíveis fraudes que tirariam por completo a legitimidade dos poderes do Clube que venham a ser eleitos”.

O segundo documento é um laudo do Programa de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computação da Coppe/UFRJ, um dos mais renomados centros de estudos sobre tecnologia e segurança da informação do país e órgão absolutamente isento e independente.

Ambos vão na mesma direção: é impossível garantir a segurança e atestar a confiabilidade de uma eventual eleição pela internet no Vasco da Gama, uma vez que a implantação de um sistema desta natureza não deve ser realizada de forma prematura, sem um plano elaborado de ações.

Portanto, pedimos, mais uma vez, aos sócios que leiam os dois documentos em anexo com a devida atenção e percebam a importância deste tema e os esforços da Diretoria Administrativa para a realização de uma eleição limpa e segura. Pedimos, gentilmente, que essa leitura seja feita sem paixões partidárias ou preferências políticas, mas com base na razão e na sensatez.

Esta Diretoria Administrativa e eu, na condição de Presidente do Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama reafirmamos que não permitiremos qualquer manobra que possa colocar sob suspeição o processo eleitoral.

Esta gestão tem o compromisso moral e ético de realizar eleições 100% limpas. E é assim que será.

وفي الدقيقة 36، كاد ميسي أن يسجل هدفًا صاروخيًا من خارج المنطقة، بعدما سدد كرة قوية للغاية تجاه المرمى، ولكنها اصطدمت بالقائم.

واستمر التعادل السلبي مسيطرًا حتى الدقيقة 88، حيث تمكن البديل لاوتارو مارتينيز من تسجيل هدف قاتل.

وكادت الأرجنتين تقضي على آمال تشيلي بتسجيل هدف ثاني، في الدقيقة 95، بعد تمريرة من أنخيل دي ماريا، وصلت إلى لاوتارو مارتينيز، حيث سددها الأخير ولكن بشكل ضعيف، وتصدى لها الحارس كلاوديو برافو.

بتلك النتيجة، ارتفع رصيد منتخب الأرجنتين إلى 6 نقاط في صدارة المجموعة الأولى، وتتأهل إلى ربع نهائي كوبا أمريكا، في حين تجمد رصيد تشيلي عند نقطة.

Por falar em Allan Aal, a saída do treinador pegou muita gente de surpresa, inclusive o treinador, que revelou não esperar a sua demissão.

خرج أحمد دياب رئيس رابطة الأندية المحترفة المصرية، بتصريحات بشأن تفاصيل الضغوط التي تحدث عنها الراحل أحمد رفعت لاعب فريق مودرن سبورت ومنتخب مصر، وذلك بعد رسالة من شقيقه، محمد رفعت.

وتُوفي أحمد رفعت صباح صباح السبت، بعد صراع مع المرض، عقب تعرضه لأزمة قلبية بشكل مفاجئ خلال مباراة فريقه أمام الاتحاد السكندري بالدوري في مارس الماضي.

وخرج محمد رفعت شقيق أحمد رفعت منذ قليل في تصريحات تلفيزيونية، قائلًا: “لن أقول ماذا حدث، اسألوا أحمد دياب ماذا حدث في أحمد رفعت بسببه؟، وان شاء الله حقه سيعود”.

أحمد رفعت قبل وفاته بأيام كان قد خرج بتصريحات في برنامج “الكورة مع فايق”، قال فيها إنه تعرض لضغوط شديدة من قبل شخص أو اثنين مسؤولين في الكرة المصرية، أدت إلى دخوله في حالة نفسية صعبة.

وقال أحمد دياب خلال تصريحات عبر برنامج “الكورة مع فايق” المذاع على قناة “MBC مصر 2”: “اتحدث كمسؤول سابق في نادي فيوتشر، أحمد رفعت خرج له قرارين وزاريين بالسفر إلى ليبيريا ثم إلى الإمارات للتعاقد مع نادي الوحدة”.

وأضاف: “قلت لـ أحمد رفعت لن تركب الطائرة حتى يكون القرار في يدي، أتحدث عن القرار الوزاري بأحقية سفره إلى الإمارات”.

وتابع: “ما بعد القرار الوزاري والتعامل في القانون، الأمر لا يخص النادي، هذه مسؤولية أخرى”.

وأكمل: “رابطة الأندية لم تتجاهل أحمد رفعت، ذهبنا في اجتماع مع وزير الشباب لحل الأمر، وقمنا بعمل مذكرة وتقدم بها وليد دعبس للجهة المختصة”.

وواصل: “أي أحد في المنظومة الرياضية، هذه الخطوات التي تأخذها لكي تسافر بعثة أو لاعب”.

وبسؤاله لماذا اعتبر أحمد رفعت خارج عن القانون؟، أجاب: “أحمد رفعت خرج من المطار قانوني”.

ولماذا تم تنفيذ القانون عليه عندما عاد لمصر، قال: “أحمد رفعت عاد لمصر في العام الماضي واستكمل لعب مع ناديه وشارك في الدوري ومباريات إفريقيا، وبدأ الموسم الحالي مع مودرن سبورت، كل ذلك بعد عودته من الإمارات وكان يشارك مع ناديه”.

هل أحمد رفعت طلب مساعدتك؟: “تحدثنا مع بعض أكثر من مرة ومع نادر شوقي وكيله، وبعد ذلك نقلت الحديث بالكامل لوليد دعبس رئيس النادي”.

وأستمر: “اي نادٍ أو اتحاد يتقدم بطلب للسفر لوزارة الشباب الرياضة، وبناءً عليه يصدر القرار الوزاري بالسفر، مسؤولية النادي تتنهي عند الحصول على تصريح وزاري والاعتمادات الأخرى ليست في يد النادي”.

واختتم: “النادي بعد القرار الوزاري يجب أن يقوم بعمل تصريح السفر من التجنيد، وإلا أحمد رفعت لن يكون قادر على السفر”.
