Bangladesh will tour South Africa for the first time in nine years, and the centres of Potchefstroom and Bloemfontein are set to host Tests after a long tim

South Africa will host Bangladesh for the first time in nine years to open what is set to be a bumper 2017-18 summer, although their opponents for the Christmas-New Year period are yet to be confirmed. South Africa will host at least 10 Tests, including four each against India and Australia. Details of those tours are expected early in the new year.Bangladesh’s itinerary in South Africa

September 21-23: Three-day tour match v SA Invitation XI, Benoni

September 28-October 2: 1st Test, Potchefstroom

October 6-10: 2nd Test, Bloemfontein

October 12: Tour match v SA Invitation XI, Bloemfontein

October 15: 1st ODI, Kimberley

October 18: 2nd ODI,Paarl

October 22: 3rd ODI, East London

October 26: 1st T20I, Bloemfontein

October 29: 2nd T20I, Potchefstroom

The Bangladesh visit, between September and October 2017, has created the opportunity for Bloemfontein and Potchefstroom to host their first Tests since 2008 and 2002 respectively. The two venues had hosted Bangladesh in those years but have not hosted matches in the longest format since.Bangladesh’s tour includes two Tests, three ODIs – all day-games – and two T20s. All matches will be played at South Africa’s lower-profile grounds. Kimberley, Paarl and East London will host the three ODIs.After the Bangladesh series, South Africa are scheduled to host India for a full tour comprising four Tests, five ODIs and three T20s but it is yet to be confirmed whether these will take place over the Christmas and New Year period or later in the summer. The FTP originally had Sri Lanka down to tour over Boxing Day and New Year, for the second season in succession, but there has been no mention of whether that series will take place. There was also a suggestion that Pakistan could be invited. According to the FTP, Pakistan are scheduled to play India in November-December 2017.”Our scheduling discussions with the BCCI are in progress and we hope to be in a position to announce the fixtures for this tour in the new year,” Haroon Lorgat, CSA CEO said.India’s previous visit to South Africa was in 2013-14, when they cut short a tour that was due to be of the same length as the upcoming one because of disagreements over the scheduling. India only played two Tests and three ODIs on that visit but hosted South Africa for four Tests, five ODIs and three T20s late in 2015.

Man United: £70m striker being eyed by Ten Hag

Manchester United remain interested in signing Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

What's the latest Man United transfer news?

As a potential takeover looms over Old Trafford this summer, bringing with it great uncertainty, Erik ten Hag may have to remain patient in the transfer window.

In a season that saw United finish third and win the Carabao Cup, the club's first silverware since 2017, the positive feelings that have been largely missing since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure arrived back at Old Trafford.

However, as is the way in football, things move on pretty quickly, with Ten Hag now expected to do bigger and better things next campaign. To achieve this, he will need some financial backing, but how much he will receive remains unclear.

One thing the Red Devils distinctly lacked last year was a centre-forward, a focal point. Wout Weghorst's emergency loan was far from fruitful and Anthony Martial's fitness issues kept him sidelined for far too many games.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Man United are strongly considering a big-money move for a new number nine, looking towards Atalanta and Denmark's Rasmus Hojlund as a potential solution.

"Mentioning the striker situation, two players are now being considered at Man United," declared Romano. "One is Rasmus Hojlund. I always told you about him, there is an interest on Manchester United side."

"He is represented by SEG agency, the same as Erik ten Hag, so there is this conversation about Rasmus Hojlund. But for Man United, it is crucial to understand the final price tag because at the moment Atalanta are asking around £70m for Rasmus Hojlund and Manchester United were hoping to pay less than this."

Romano adds that the Red Devils do not believe Hojlund is worth £70m and are therefore reluctant to match this valuation. As has been documented by their pursuit of Mason Mount, United are willing to stand firm this summer after years of overspending on players.

The same can be said of the club's interest in Harry Kane, which has since diminished due to the sizeable transfer fee required to sign the 29-year-old.

Is Hojlund ready for Old Trafford?

Considering Hojlund has only played 36 games at a club in a top-five league, it is understandable that United are not ready to put ridiculous sums of money on the table to sign the 20-year-old.

All of those came last season with Atalanta, with the Danish forward putting up 11 goals in those matches. Hojlund has also managed more goals than games in an admittedly small sample size at international level (six goals in five games).

The forward only arrived in Serie A in 2022, joining from Sturm Graz in Austria for just under £15m.

While United would clearly be paying for a talented youngster with an enormous potential, the riskiness of such a lucrative deal may not be worth the gamble for Ten Hag.

Gambhir fifty steers Delhi in small chase

Gautam Gambhir’s 44-ball 61 set up Delhi’s five-wicket win over Haryana in Dharamsala. Gambhir controlled most of Delhi’s chase after they were set 115, striking 11 fours in his knock before falling with the side nine runs away from victory. Earlier, Haryana had a modest performance with the bat as they put on 114 for 7. While their batsmen got starts, no one could carry on and score a half-century. Pradeep Sangwan was the best bowler for Delhi with 2 for 21, while the rest of the attack took at least one wicket each. For the second successive day, Jammu & Kashmir defended a modest target to set up a win. On Tuesday, they had defended 127 against Punjab; on Wednesday, Umar Nazir, Deepak Dogra, Manik Gupta and Manzoor Dar took two wickets each to limit Himachal Pradesh to 105 for 9 and seal an 18-run win. HP were comfortably placed at 82 for 2 in the 15th over before Gupta struck twice in the over with his legspin. In the next over, the dismissal of a set Paras Dogra buoyed J&K, who took three wickets, including a run-out in the final over. Dar, who made his T20 debut earlier in the month, had also scored a crucial 34 at No. 8 earlier, lifting Jammu & Kashmir to 123 from a precarious 44 for 6 in the tenth over.Manpreet Gony bowls Sachin Shinde in his four over spell of 13 runs and two wickets•Shailesh Bhatnagar

Manpreet Gony top-scored for Punjab and then returned figures of 2 for 13 in his four overs to lead his team to a six-run win against Services. He came in to bat with Punjab at 70 for 6 and hit 27 runs in 10 balls to help his team to 129 for 9 in their 20 overs. Services’ Diwesh Pathania took three wickets, including the openers, for 22 runs. In their chase, Services slumped to 29 for 3 inside six overs but a 74-run fourth-wicket partnership between Nakul Verma (57) and the captain Anshul Gupta (38) kept them in the hunt. Gupta was run out in the 17th over – by that man Gony – while Verma fell in the same manner eight balls later as a late slide meant Services could only reach 123 for 8 in their 20, seven runs short of the 130 target.

Liverpool Must Ditch Gomez By Signing £60m ‘Brick Wall’

Liverpool have wasted no time at all in getting their business done in the summer transfer window and have already made the signing of two exciting young midfielders with Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai joining the squad for next season.

The Reds failed to maintain their high standards both in the Premier League and on the European stage last season which left many supporters hoping that the club would look to iron out the issues and uninspiring performances by acquiring fresh talent.

Indeed, the Anfield faithful will be thrilled with the signing of the two attacking-minded midfielders, however, there is still plenty of work to be done to bring the team back to life and deliver on the expectations that have been set over Jurgen Klopp's tenure so far.

The Athletic's Liverpool reporter James Pearce claimed in an article this week that the club are no longer making the signing of a third midfielder a priority and instead are more likely to focus on bringing in a centre-back who can inject some youth into the defensive set-up.

Both Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are well into their 30s at this point with the latter set to be out of contract at the end of next season, so there is a real opportunity to strengthen the personnel and provide Ibrahima Konate with another young prospect to work alongside as part of the long-term future of the team.

One player who has been linked with a move to Merseyside this week is Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

How much is Marc Guehi?

A talented centre-back who has been going from strength to strength over the last two seasons, the Englishman has become a huge asset to the South London club.

Football Insider report that Liverpool are interested in signing Guehi this summer, however, Palace will command a whopping £60m fee to part ways with their defensive prodigy.

How good is Marc Guehi?

Owing to his expensive price tag it would seem unlikely that FSG would sanction the funds to snap up the services of Guehi this summer, however, this will depend on just how urgent the need is felt to strengthen the centre-back role and whether Klopp can trust his current crop of players.

Should Matip be allowed to leave on a free next summer, it would leave Klopp's options limited to Konate, Van Dijk, Nat Phillips and Joe Gomez, unless of course, the club decide to invest in the 2024 transfer windows.

marc-guehi-premier-league-liverpool-transfers

This would also be without taking into consideration potential injury issues, something that plagued Konate's ability to be a consistent presence over last season with only 18 appearances and 17 starts in the Premier League last season.

As a result, the signing of Guehi – dubbed "composed" by Patrick Vieira – could be the perfect opportunity to bolster the centre-back options with a Premier League-proven defender who could not only maintain the quality needed when others are injured but would be a great upgrade on Gomez.

When comparing the positional peers' output in the league last season, Guehi comfortably outperformed the Liverpool centre-back in a number of attributes including percentage of dribblers tackled (61.9% v 57.9%), aerial duels won (55.7% v 54.8%), interceptions (45 v 25) and ball recoveries (241 v 126), as per FBref.

The 22-year-old has been the recipient of high praise over his career so far, with Club Brugge 'keeper Josef Bursik naming Guehi when asked to pick the strongest player in England's U21 squad a few seasons ago:

"Marc Guehi. He’s an absolute tank, It’s like having a brick wall in front of you, he’s massive."

With that being said, it would be a no-brainer for Liverpool to sign Guehi this summer as it could well be a move that facilities an exit for Gomez.

Boult ruled out of third Test against South Africa

Trent Boult has been ruled out for the third Test against South Africa after failing to recover in time from a groin injury sustained during the first Test in Dunedin

New Zealand’s pace attack has been dealt another blow ahead of the third Test in Hamilton against South Africa with the confirmation that Trent Boult will be unable to play after failing to recover from a groin injury that had kept him out of the second Test in Wellington. Boult sustained the injury in the first Test match in Dunedin.Scott Kuggeleijn has been called in as cover after Lockie Ferguson was unavailable due to an injury sustained in the Plunket Shield. In November last year, Kuggeleign made himself unavailable for national selection after he was charged with rape. He was eventually found not guilty when the verdict was read on February 27. It was Kuggeleijn’s second trial relating to an incident that occurred on May 17, 2015 after the jury in the first trial could not reach a verdict. Kuggeleijn returned to the Northern Districts side after the February verdict and currently sits third on the Plunket Shield wickets tally with 31 at 25.48.Boult’s injury means that New Zealand are down to two frontline quicks in Neil Wagner and Matt Henry after it was announced on Thursday that Tim Southee would be sidelined with a hamstring tear. Wagner has played in both Tests and is New Zealand’s leading wicket-taker in the series with nine at 29.44, while Henry has not played a match so far. Henry’s last Test was against Pakistan in November last year at Seddon Park.At the other end of their line-up, New Zealand are without their most experienced batsman Ross Taylor, who suffered a calf tear in the first Test and was unfit to participate in the remaining two. Boult and Southee have IPL contracts but there is no word on whether these injuries will affect their participation in this tournament.”Trent did everything possible to get himself ready for this Test and is extremely disappointed to be missing out,” selector Gavin Larsen said. “While he has made good progress, after training yesterday we spoke with medical staff and it was agreed that Trent required a little further time to be ready for the demands of Test cricket. Not having Trent or Tim available tests the depth of our squad, but we’re confident of the job that Neil and Matt can do for us.”New Zealand will likely choose between three of the five quicks available to them, which includes allrounders Colin de Grandhomme and James Neesham, and play both specialist spinners, Jeetan Patel and Mitchell Santner on what is expected to be a slow, turning surface. The two tweakers also featured in the Dunedin match, at the expense of Southee, who returned in Boult’s place in Wellington.Since Trent Boult’s debut in December 2011, New Zealand have only played three Tests without both Boult and Southee. Two of them were against South Africa in the 2012 series, including the Hamilton match which decided the series.South Africa have an injury concern of their own. Quinton de Kock suffered damage to a tendon on his right index finger and could need up to six weeks on the sidelines. A late call will be taken on de Kock’s availability on Friday afternoon.

Runs will come, it will turn around – Warner

Australian opener says his poor showing on the tour is just a phase and he “couldn’t be hitting the ball better” amid questions about his ability in unfamiliar conditions

Brydon Coverdale21-Mar-20171:26

David Warner’s Test performances in unfamiliar conditions have come under the scanner this series

That this series remains alive with one Test to play is a significant achievement for Australia. That they have reached this point without a contribution of note from David Warner is all the more remarkable. Australia’s most destructive batsman – and No.5 on the ICC’s Test rankings – has scored fewer runs in this series than any other member of Australia’s top five.Warner has made 38, 10, 33, 17, 19 and 14, for a series tally of 131 runs at 21.83. He is far from the only batsman struggling in this campaign – Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane have scored fewer runs than Warner – but the slump continues a worrying trend for Warner, who dominates fast and bouncy conditions but not so much when the ball turns and stays low.Of Warner’s 18 Test centuries, 14 have been scored at home and a further three in South Africa, where the conditions typically resemble those found in Australia. The only Test hundred he has made elsewhere came against Pakistan in Dubai in 2014. He averages sub-30 in India, Sri Lanka, West Indies and New Zealand.”I feel fantastic, I couldn’t be hitting the ball any better but it’s just that the runs aren’t coming for me at the moment,” Warner told reporters in Ranchi after Australia played out a draw in the third Test. “That will come, it will turn around. I just have to keep being disciplined and making sure that my preparation is still the same – not change anything, and just go about my business as I do.”Numbers always pop up everywhere. For me it’s about putting my best foot forward and trying to put my team in a position that we can either defend or win games. That’s what that’s about. Everyone in world cricket, greats and legends of the game have had stints overseas or at home [where] they’ve had some form slumps. That’s just the game of cricket.”It is not Warner’s first slump in recent times. He scored a hundred in the first week of 2016 against West Indies in the washed-out Sydney Test, but did not manage another until the final week of the year, when he plundered 144 against Pakistan in the Boxing Day Test. Warner said the knowledge that he had emerged from that dip with hundreds in consecutive Tests – he also made one at the SCG following the Boxing Day Test – gave him confidence.”That’s where in the back of your mind you’ve got to keep telling yourself you’ve done the hard yards, you just don’t lose it overnight,” he said. “There were tough periods where I kept on thinking to myself ‘am I actually doing the work at training?’ I sort of second guessed myself.”I had a couple of words to some boys around Christmas time and they weren’t seeing any trends or anything with my dismissals, everything I was doing at training was spot on and in the normal way I go about it. Nothing’s changed, it’s still the same. I’ve just got to go out and keep backing myself and, when I’m out there, adapt to the conditions and then keep backing myself to try and keep putting the runs on the board.”At least Warner has been helping Australia to steady starts, via his opening stands with Matt Renshaw. Three of their five opening partnerships in this series have been worth at least fifty, though Warner acknowledged that such starts should be turned into more hefty platforms.”For the team’s sake we need to get off to a good start,” Warner said. “As a partnership, me and Renners have been getting off to an okay start. None for 50 over here, you need those to be none for 100. We’ve seen the Indians do it before, batting big and [making] partnerships of 200.”A notable aspect of Australia’s top-order performance during this series has been that Renshaw, aged 20 and playing in his first Test series outside Australia, has scored more runs and faced more balls than any Australian besides Steven Smith. Renshaw has made two half-centuries and averaged 37.16 in this campaign, and only Smith and Cheteshwar Pujara from either side have faced more than Renshaw’s tally of 567 deliveries.”He knuckles down. He’s got the game. He’s got the brains as well, for a 20-year-old kid,” Warner said. “I know where my mind was when I was a 20-year-old. Credit to him. To come out here and play the way he has done so far in this series is a testament to him and obviously the way he started in Australia as well.”
