Manchester United: Solskjaer has no intention of dropping David de Gea; may annoy Dean Henderson

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no intention of dropping David De Gea following his 400th game for Manchester United.

According to ESPN, De Gea’s place as first-choice goalkeeper has come under pressure in recent years, but Solskjaer insisted he has no plans of axing him anytime soon.

Once again, Solskjaer has decided to back the Spaniard, which could be bad news for the Red Devils as this may annoy Dean Henderson.

The Norwegian is not short of options between the sticks, as he can call upon the services of Sergio Romero, while Henderson has impressed on loan at Sheffield United.

De Gea, who is currently valued at £36m via Transfermarkt, has copped a fair amount of criticism following a dip in form, but Solskjaer has put his faith in the veteran, who signed a new long-term contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2024.

Although the Red Devils have offered Henderson a new deal, he has made it abundantly clear he is only prepared to sign on the dotted line if he is given the number one spot at the Theatre of Dreams.

The 23-year-old has spent the last few years on loan at Bramall Lane and has been an integral part of Chris Wilder’s side as the Blades have surged into European contention.

Henderson has played 33 games in the Premier League this season, keeping 13 clean sheets and only conceding 27 goals.

Despite his heroics in front of the posts, Solskjaer has given De Gea his support instead.

As it stands, Henderson is set to line up against Leicester when the Blades travel to the King Power Stadium on Thursday. He was tipped to wear the gloves for England before Euro 2020 was postponed due to these uncertain times.

However, Solskjaer’s decision might jeopardise his career at Old Trafford, as Chelsea are preparing to make a move for the keeper in the summer.

If United can’t give Henderson what he wants, he may decide to move elsewhere, as his future remains unclear.

The Red Devils will not want to let another youngster with bags of potential slip through their fingers, as ended up happening with Gerard Pique, who turned out to be a world-class defender at Barcelona.

Manchester United: Solskjaer has built a platform for the Glazers to build a winning team again [Opinion]

Manchester United thrashed Aston Villa 3-0 at Villa Park on Thursday night to extend their unbeaten run to 17 games in all competitions.

Plans seem to be in motion to return the Red Devils to their pedestal, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is eager to sign Jadon Sancho this summer.

While the club legend ferrets around for some new additions to his squad, United are in a strong position in the Premier League. They are currently fifth in the table, a point behind fourth-placed Leicester and two points away from Chelsea.

Solskjaer’s side remain firmly in the race for Champions League football next season with only four games remaining. If United keep on going as they are, they may not even need to take Manchester City’s place in the competition – although this is not guaranteed.

As the transfer window approaches, Ed Woodward will begin to feel pressure to keep this momentum going and make a statement signing, as used to be a tradition under Sir Alex Ferguson. While Fergie’s days are long gone, and the club has been on a rollercoaster ever since, the reality remains that the Glazers must take advantage of this situation.

Solskjaer has built a platform for the Glazers to build a winning team again but, as Mark Ogden has opined, they are still several signings away from challenging Liverpool and Manchester City for the title.

The foundations are there for all to see, as Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes have formed a formidable midfield partnership, but United’s defence has been circumspect at best.

Signing Sancho isn’t enough as there are other key areas that urgently need addressing. The Red Devils don’t seem to have any problems scoring goals – indeed, Mason Greenwood has racked up a tally of nine goals in the league.

David de Gea and Harry Maguire have copped a fair amount of criticism from club legend Roy Keane amongst many others, as they have made a string of errors on multiple occasions. That’s not to say that Solskjaer should get rid of the culprits, far from it, and it is hard to imagine that the board will be willing to sell Maguire after they spent a fortune on him last summer.

Rather, it suggests that there are other areas where they need improvement to bring out the best in them. If United have to splash the cash on another centre-half to compliment the club captain, so be it, as Victor Lindelof has never looked particularly convincing alongside him.

For whatever reason, Eric Bailly can’t seem to get a game at the moment, while Lindelof has received a below-par rating of 6.69 overall for his performances so far.

The Glazers have a real chance to close the gap on the runaway leaders this summer and get the club back to where they used to be. Money shouldn’t be a problem as The Athletic revealed the board still have an ample amount to spend.

Chelsea have already paved the way by bringing Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech to Stamford Bridge, and United should follow suit by making several signings to level the playing field.

Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Liverpool will not be spending vast sums, while City’s transfer policy hinges on the outcome of their appeal against a two-year ban from UEFA competitions, and the Glazers should be looking to seize the advantage in the transfer window.

There is not a moment to waste and United should be seeking to snap up some key players to improve the squad.

Glasgow Rangers: Alan Hutton criticises Alfredo Morelos after game against Aberdeen

There is a lot going on at Glasgow Rangers at the moment, especially in attack as Jermain Defoe is injured, two new strikers have recently signed and Alfredo Morelos is being linked with a move away.

The reshuffle that looks to be happening upfront seems to be nearly completed, but despite the Colombian being rumoured to leave soon, Steven Gerrard still decided to start the forward in their first game of the Scottish Premiership 2020/21 season. The Gers managed to come away with the 1-0 victory against Aberdeen, with Ryan Kent scoring the only goal.

Alan Hutton has been speaking about Morelos following the match to Football Insider, and the former Scottish International said: “He didn’t look himself to me if I’m honest. I’ve always said it does take you a couple of games to get into it, it was a very short pre-season.

“He still looks a little bit heavy for me, he looks big, so look, he’s going to have to work hard. Look, I listened to Steven Gerrard after the game and he must be sick to his back teeth with what he hears about him.

“I totally understand but the thing is it’s not going to go away, the rumours are always going to circulate but I think at the moment he really needs to knuckle down and get his head on that he’s a Rangers player at the moment.”

This is perhaps a little harsh from the ex-Aston Villa right-back. Despite the fact that Morelos did not score, he did pick up a 7.9 rating, per SofaScore, which saw him receive the second-best rating out of anyone who featured in the match.

He picked up an assist for the goal, whilst also completing three of his five attempted dribbles, and made three key passes, per SofaScore, so he clearly was a menace for the Aberdeen defence.

Obviously the rumours will be on his mind, but for his first competitive fixture in around four months, the Colombian definitely put in a good shift, and it shows how good he is that in such a performance, people believe he was not at his best.

Glasgow Rangers: Gers have bid rejected for Olsen

As per Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Glasgow Rangers have had an offer rejected for Andreas Skov Olsen.

The Gers are said to have made a loan offer for the winger, who only signed for Bologna last year.

However, the report says that was turned down by his current club, with them saying that they will not allow him to leave on a temporary basis, and that it will need a considerable offer to convince them to part ways permanently.

Olsen made the move to Italy for £5.4m last July, but he made just 26 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A outfit last term – he has struggled to adapt to a step up in quality from the Danish top flight.

However, he is just 20 years old, and his displays at Nordsjaelland were very impressive – as a teenager, he scored 26 goals and provided six assists during the 2018/19 campaign, whilst he has also shown his ability on the international stage with eight goals in 16 matches for Denmark’s U21s.

Currently valued at £6.03m by Transfermarkt, it would likely require a big offer from the Gers to convince Bologna to part ways, but if they could strike some kind of deal, he has all the ability to become a real star for Steven Gerrard north of the border.

Profit Players: Robbie Keane more than justified Tottenham’s initial £7m outlay

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

Off the back of an impressive World Cup with the Republic of Ireland in 2002, scoring three goals in his team’s run to the last 16 after their chaotic pre-tournament preparations, Robbie Keane earned himself a move to Tottenham from Leeds for a reported £7m, as per BBC.

Then just 22, he had bounced back from an abortive spell at Inter Milan to earn his move to Spurs, already the fifth permanent club of his career, but the Irishman’s hitherto nomadic existence was in stark contrast to his lengthy spell at White Hart Lane.

Glenn Hoddle, the manager who signed him for Tottenham, said at the time of his arrival that “Keane can make White Hart Lane his spiritual home for many years”, which proved to be correct but seemed an ambitious prediction at the time given Keane’s abundance of transfers early in his career.

Keane and Spurs proved an ideal fit for one another, though, with the Tallaght native hitting double figures in the Premier League for six successive seasons in north London. Even in the 2004/05 campaign, when he often had to play second fiddle to Jermain Defoe, Frederic Kanoute and Mido, he still managed 17 goals in all competitions, a testament to his consistent penalty box prowess.

A three-time winner of Spurs’ Player of the Season award, the Irishman enjoyed his finest hour with the club in 2008 when he featured in their League Cup final success over Chelsea at Wembley, while he also scored a stoppage-time equaliser in a North London derby, albeit on the day that Arsenal clinched the Premier League title in 2004.

After six years with Tottenham, Keane moved to Liverpool, the club he supported as a boy, in the summer of 2008 but made a sensational return to White Hart Lane just six months later, this time for £12m. However, having sold him to the Reds for £19m, Spurs’ two purchases of the striker were cancelled out by the fee that they received from the Merseysiders.

After scoring 107 goals in his first spell at Tottenham, Keane added 15 more during his second coming before leaving for LA Galaxy in 2011 following loan stints at Celtic and West Ham (as per TransferMarkt).

The striker finished his career with 126 Premier League goals, making him the 15th-highest scorer in the division’s history ahead of the likes of Dwight Yorke, Nicolas Anelka and Steven Gerrard, yet it is his scoring feats at international level which are the most eye-catching. He is Republic of Ireland’s all-time leading scorer with 68 goals for his country, a record which seems unlikely to ever be beaten given that Niall Quinn, who is second on the list, has a mere 21 by comparison (as per 11v11).

Keane has played for numerous clubs but his highest tally of goals and appearances came in his time at Spurs, where it would be fair to say that he spent the best years of his career and more than justified Hoddle’s initial faith in him.

Report: Seven players West Ham missed out on

West Ham United are facing a tumultuous summer.

They have sold Grady Diangana to West Bromwich Albion in a deal that has led to howls of derision from fans and have roundly failed to strengthen their squad in the summer.

Tomas Soucek has arrived on a permanent basis, his loan deal being converted, but other than that, they are no better than they were at the end of the campaign.

And The Athletic has now made it clear just how poor their transfer activity has been.

They report that there were a number of players discussed as potential targets who have moved to other clubs instead of ending up in east London.

Cameo Clubs: Which obscure teams did these football legends play for?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The names may be familiar for West Ham fans; Ollie Watkins and Matty Cash have joined Aston Villa from Brentford and Nottingham Forest respectively; Antonee Robinson has moved to Fulham from Wigan Athletic; Eberechi Eze has gone to Crystal Palace from QPR; Jamal Lewis has joined Newcastle United from Norwich City, while Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser have also rocked up at St James’ Park from AFC Bournemouth.

There is no guarantee, of course, that any would have decided to move to the London Stadium when faced with rival interest but there must be frustration at the inability to get deals over the line this summer for the Hammers.

Any one of the seven players would undoubtedly have improved David Moyes’ squad and given him more options in his selections.

Is life under Gold and Sullivan really that bad? Maybe this quiz will change your minds, West Ham fans…

Instead, he is still working with the same group of players he had at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

It really isn’t good enough.

Keeping Jack Wilshere is a gamble worth taking for West Ham

There’s a lot of unrest at West Ham United at the moment.

Understandably, there’s a lot of unhappiness around the club after an unsuccessful 2019/20 season where they narrowly avoided relegation, and that misery has been compounded by the backlash that came from selling Grady Diangana to West Brom, including a jab from club captain Mark Noble.

It looks as though there may soon be another big-name departure at the London Stadium, as reports are have been stating that the Clarets are looking to terminate Jack Wilshere’s £100k a week contract, a year before it is due to expire.

Watch West Ham United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

You can understand why the Hammers want to be rid of Wilshere, £5.2m a year for a player who has played just 16 league games in the last two seasons just doesn’t represent value for money, but with just one year of his deal left to run, surely the ex-Arsenal man is worth one final roll of the dice?

The Hammers are seemingly at their lowest ebb since they were promoted back to the top-flight in 2012, with the club in turmoil and the club captain hitting out at the owners, and the only way to get everyone back on side is to show up on the pitch, and a fit Wilshere has the potential to be up there with the best midfielders in the country when he’s on form.

Of course, getting him fit is easier said than done, but if he was to join one of West Ham’s rivals and return to his best form while playing consistent minutes, this could end up being a move West Ham regret for years to come.

The question is, what do they have to lose? Yes, £5.2m is a lot of money, but in footballing terms, it’s a drop in the ocean, especially when you consider this is a club that spent £45m on Sebastien Haller last summer.

West Ham will find it hard to get a better player than Wilshere for that type of money, and if it doesn’t work out, they can let him go with minimal fuss and no compensation next summer when his contract expires.

Leeds midfielder Robbie Gotts has every right to be fuming with Bielsa

Leeds United have done a lot right in this transfer window, and one thing they have been quite good at sorting out is loan deals for their bright young talents.

Ryan Edmondson, Jordan Stevens and Alfie McCalmont have gone out on loan, but one man who remains at the club is Robbie Gotts.

The young midfielder hasn’t been short of suitors this summer with both Huddersfield Town and Hull City looking to loan him in, but despite all of this interest, a move hasn’t yet come to fruition.

Gotts doesn’t look likely to get a go in Leeds’ first-team this season, he’s not made the bench in any of United’s first three league matches, and with Victor Orta still on the hunt for a new midfielder, he may soon drop further down the pecking order.

Of course, a loan move could still come to fruition, but with a number of games already gone this season, Gotts has missed out on a valuable pre-season period to get to grips with his new club and his new teammates.

Marcelo Bielsa is well aware of how frustrated Gotts must be by all of this, it’s understood that he once actually apologised to him in his office due to his lack of gametime with the Argentine telling him he’d understand if he wanted to leave the club, yet, here we are almost 10 months on from that story coming out, and Gotts is still being mistreated.

The U23 ace would have every right to be banging on Bielsa’s door to ask for an explanation as to why he’s not been loaned out yet, especially after the Argentine showed so much understanding for his situation earlier this year.

Hopefully, there is a plan in place for Gotts, otherwise, his development could end up stalling if he continues to miss out on opportunities to play senior football.

West Ham United wise to baulk at £26m deal for Chelsea’s Emerson Palmeri

West Ham United were wise to side with caution this summer having opted against pushing through a potential £26million deal to sign Chelsea full-back Emerson Palmeri.

What’s the word?

The Irons were linked with Chelsea’s out-of-favour defender Emerson this summer by talkSPORT, who claimed the 26-year-old was being considered by manager David Moyes to strengthen the backline in east London.

Emerson was thought to have been one of several players that could depart Stamford Bridge after failing to impress Frank Lampard last season, having been awarded just 15 Premier League appearances and playing infrequent roles in the Blues’ cup efforts.

But the Stamford Bridge natives were not willing to allow Emerson to depart on the cheap, and reports by Goal suggested they would demand £26m for the alleged Inter Milan target as they sought to raise funds to offset Ben Chilwell’s £45m arrival.

Lampard has continued to overlook Emerson this season having opted against naming the defender in any of his league squads to date, much to the Italy international’s disappointment.

“When I arrive here I change my head, I feel important and part of the group,” Emerson is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail while on international duty.

“At Chelsea, things are not going as I wish in this part of the season. I just have to work.”

It is noted that Chelsea will likely look to offload Emerson again in January, with the Santos, Brazil-born full-back behind Marcos Alonso and Chilwell in Lampard’s plans.

Wise to baulk at £26m deal

While Moyes is said to have considered Emerson as a potential option to explore in his search of a new full-back, David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady were right to baulk at any deal for the disheartened 26-year-old if interest reached that level in east London.

Emerson would only have offered a marginal upgrade on current Irons ace Aaron Creswell when their numbers from last season are compared, with Moyes calling on the Liverpool-born 30-year-old to feature 29 times across all competitions at left-back in 2019/20.

Moyes handed Creswell a total of 31 outings in last year’s Premier League campaign, of which all were starting roles and the £5.85m-rated ace managed an average 0.8 key balls, 0.5 shots, 1.4 tackles, 1.9 clearances and 3.7 duels won per match while helping to five clean sheets, per SofaScore.

As for Emerson, the Chelsea outcast started just 13 of his 15 top-flight appearances and managed an average 1.3 key balls, 0.6 shots, 1.5 tackles, 0.9 clearances and 4.5 duels won a game while helping to just one clean sheet.

With Emerson on a £75,000-per-week contract at Stamford Bridge, West Ham would have been making a vast financial commitment for limited gains by signing the Lampard exile.

AND in other news, West Ham can sign a “gifted” long-term target before Friday’s deadline after a Premier League rival turned to alternative options.

Arsenal star Dani Ceballos produced a shocking display against Leicester

After enjoying a late season renaissance under Mikel Arteta in the previous campaign, Dani Ceballos extended his loan spell at Arsenal for another year.

The Spaniard made his return to the Emirates for a second successive campaign, and has well and truly established himself as a key part of Arteta’s starting eleven, playing every single Premier League game this season.

But on Sunday night against Leicester, Ceballos produced a shocking display as he lined up alongside Thomas Partey for the first time as a starting midfield pair.

Whether it was his new teammate’s presence, or the fact that his regular partner in crime, Granit Xhaka, was playing more as a left-sided centre-back, the Arsenal loanee just didn’t look to be at the races at all.

As per SofaScore, he lost possession 17 times over the course of the game, with many of them coming from poor first touches and a lack of concentration – a couple of times the midfielder just carelessly passed it to a Leicester player without any real focus or concentration.

He was also dribbled past three times on the night, the most of any Gunner, whilst he won just three of his eight total duels. Ceballos was just too easily shrugged off the ball, and in the 50/50s, struggled to come out on top.

With the Foxes making it clear that they were going to just back and hit the north Londoners on the counter attack like they did so successfully in their resounding win over Manchester City, Arsenal could ill afford to lose possession in dangerous areas.

Instead, there were a number of times where Ceballos was found wanting both in terms of his positioning and giving the ball away. The Spanird will surely be feeling slightly embarrassed at his performance at the Emirates at the weekdn.
