Brazil announced Ancelotti as their new head coach just days after Madrid’s La Liga disappointment. The sudden post sparked controversy, especially since Madrid hadn’t confirmed his departure. Many saw it as disrespectful, but the Brazilian Football Association (CBF) now says the announcement was cleared by the Spanish giants.

Brazil have struggled in recent years, disappointing in both the Copa America and World Cup. After sacking Dorival Junior in March, the CBF was under pressure to land a top name. Ancelotti, one of football’s most decorated managers, was seen as the ideal figure to steady the ship.

WHAT CAETANO SAID

Speaking to about the negotiations with Ancelotti, Caetano said: "We met after the game against Arsenal. Carlo Ancelotti never wanted to speak to us until after his commitment to Real Madrid, I want to be very clear about that. Our contact was after La Liga."

Another major flashpoint was the timing of the announcement, which sparked backlash from Madrid fans. However, Caetano clarified the situation and said: "Do you think the CBF would do something Real Madrid wouldn't agree with? Here we have a lot of respect for institutions like Real Madrid and their people!

"It was because Real Madrid authorised the CBF to do it this way. Ancelotti was still working with the team because there were two more matches left, and we spoke with him at the end. After his dismissal, we already discussed the squad."

He added: "Carlo Ancelotti is the most important coach in the world right now. He has won all the leagues, and it's a great honour for us to have him, as it is for him because he will coach the most successful team of all time."

According to The Times, Liverpool are closing in on van Bronckhorst, who has recently had spells as head coach at Rangers, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Besiktas, ultimately departing from the Turkish outfit back in November. With Heitinga appointed as head coach at Dutch giants Ajax, there's a spot at Anfield to be filled, and there aren't many stronger candidates than van Bronckhorst.

There are clear parallels between the careers of Van Bronckhorst and Slot, with both managers coming from the Netherlands, managing Feyenoord early in their careers and winning impressive Eredivisie titles with the club (the former in 2017, the latter in 2023). While Slot never played for his country, he seems to appreciate having the know-how of experienced former Dutch international players beside him in the dugout, as this latest Liverpool appointment reflects.

DID YOU KNOW?

After news emerged of Heitinga's Ajax move, speculation surrounding the Reds' next assistant began heating up, with former Liverpool winger Dirk Kuyt linked with the job. Ultimately, Kuyt's agent was forced to come out and deny the rumours, telling one Dutch podcast, "it will be a different assistant coach. That would have been great for him. Liverpool’s assistant will be someone else."

It will be hard for Slot to top his opening season in the Premier League; what was expected to be a transitional campaign turned into a triumphant one with Liverpool storming to the league title and finishing 10 points ahead of their nearest rivals, Arsenal. Shakib Al Hasan and Taskin Ahmed lead Bangladesh to 2-0 series sweep

Afghanistan’s batting comes up short in the final, rain-affected, T20I in Sylhet

Some stylish T20I cricket from Bangladesh helped them to their first bilateral T20I series win against Afghanistan, with a six-wicket win in the rain-hit second game in Sylhet. A combination of fine new-ball bowling from Taskin Ahmed and a quickfire batting powerplay display by Litton Das and Afif Hossain did the trick, Bangladesh eventually knocking off a revised target of 119 from 17 overs with five balls to spare.Against Afghanistan, Bangladesh had previously lost a T20I series in 2018 in Dehradun and tied a two-match series at home last year. Along with setting this record straight, they have also maintained their perfect 2023 in T20Is: they have won all three bilateral series they’ve played in the shortest format this year, having beaten England 3-0 and Ireland 2-1 in March.Today, it was Taskin who got them off to a fiery start.Taskin Ahmed struck two early blows•WaltonTaskin’s red-hot startIn the first over, Rahmanullah Gurbaz top edged a short one from Taskin Ahmed for six, but Taskin hurried him once again with a short ball the very next delivery, and this time took the skier on offer himself. The wicket was Taskin’s 50th in T20Is, making him the third to reach this mark from Bangladesh after Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman. Gurbaz’s opening partner Hazratullah Zazai followed him in the third over after Taskin had him caught behind for four, an attempted steer through deep third not coming off.Trott, Omarzai fined

Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott and allrounder Azmatullah Omarzai were fined 15 per cent of their match fees for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct.

Trott was found guilty of breaching Article 2.8, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.” Trott had shown displeasure at the umpires’ decision to further delay play instead of resuming during one of the wet-outfield inspections.

Omarzai was penalised for his send-off to Towhid Hridoy.

Afghanistan slip after the rainSoon after, rain forced a long break of 98 minutes and the game was reduced to 17 overs a side. It gave Afghanistan, who had already batted 7.2 overs, less than ten overs to post a decent total. Mohammad Nabi, who made a fifty in the first T20I, however looked anxious at the crease and couldn’t get going. He was lucky too, when Shakib at cover and wicketkeeper Litton dropped him off consecutive balls in the ninth over, when he was on 15. Nasum Ahmed was the unlucky bowler.Mustafizur removed Nabi in the next over for 16, before Shakib had Ibrahim Zadran caught at long-on for 22 and Najibullah Zadran bowled for five in the same over. Allrounders Azmatullah Omarzai and Karim Janat got away three fours and two sixes during their sixth-wicket stand of 42 and looked like their might provide Afghanistan with the surge they very much needed, but the Bangladesh bowlers fought back beautifully. They conceded just one boundary (a six) in the last three overs, while accounting for both the allrounders – Omarzai fell to Mustafizur and Janat to Taskin.Litton Das and Afif Hossain put on a 67-run opening stand•WaltonQuick start powers BangladeshLitton welcomed Fazalhaq Farooqi with a straight drive and a swivel pull in the first over of their 119-run chase. It was a rare burst against Farooqi, who has mostly bossed powerplays in the white-ball formats.Litton then laid into debutant Wafadar Momand, hitting him for three consecutive fours in the next over: he started off with a splendid square cut, followed by an outside edge over the slips, and then a stunning backfoot punch through the covers. Momand went for 19 runs in his first over in T20I cricket.Litton dished out harsh treatment to Mujeeb Ur Rahman as well, clipping him first ball for four through fine-leg, before Afif lofted him for six over mid-off in his next over. They became the first Bangladeshi opening pair to add 50 runs in T20Is against Afghanistan, as Bangladesh rocketed along, getting to 61 for no loss in seven overs.Afghanistan hit back with three wicketsA tight over from Rashid Khan and a one-run effort from Omarzai followed. Litton played out five dots in that eighth over and took a single last ball, only to fall to Mujeeb first ball of the ninth, caught brilliantly in the covers by Rashid. Afif followed Litton just two balls later, holing out at deep midwicket.Mujeeb Ur Rahman struck twice in one over•WaltonOmarzai then yorked Najmul Hossain Shanto in the next over. At that point Bangladesh needed only a further 43 runs from 36 balls but they had lost three wickets for nine runs in two overs. Towhid Hridoy and Shakib were the new batters, and as they took a bit of time to get their eye in, suddenly Bangladesh needed eight per over in the last five overs.Shakib ensures comfortable winThe in-form Hridoy hit Mujeeb for a four over cover next over. It was Bangladesh’s first boundary since the seventh over, a gap of 30 balls. Shakib edged Mujeeb for a four, and 12 runs came off the over. Shakib launched Rashid for a six in the next over and it was down to a run a ball needed. When Hridoy slammed Omarzai for a first six, over deep square, Bangladesh needed 12 off 16. But he threw it away next ball, toe-ending a catch to mid-off for 19. Shakib and Shamim Hossain ensured no more damage, Shamim pulling Wafadar for four to tick off the winning runs first ball of the final over.

The Dortmund defender didn’t sugarcoat the team's stalemate opener against Fluminense in the Club World Cup, saying the performance was “far too little” despite the poor pitch at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Notably, Sule was not the only player who criticised the conditions of the pitch. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel also voiced his concerns, claiming the ball wasn’t bouncing the way it usually does.

After a year of build-up, FIFA’s revamped Club World Cup has struggled to draw crowds, forcing the organisers to slash ticket prices to boost attendance. Besides the pitch conditions, several teams have voiced frustration over midday kick-offs in the hot U.S. summer. Earlier, PSG manager Luis Enrique blasted FIFA over the scheduling, calling the conditions unfit for elite-level football.

"The time slot is great for European audiences, but the teams are suffering. In terms of play, it's impossible to perform at a very high level for 90 minutes,” Enrique said after PSG's 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid.

Talking to the reporters after the game, Sule said: “We were very, very weak with the ball. We were aiming for much better. No excuses about the conditions, even though the pitch was pretty terrible. The ball didn't even bounce properly. But those are all such stupid excuses. It was simply far too little today. We have to blame ourselves for that to some extent. I still think everyone is up for this challenge. We simply have to bring more to the table for the second game and work on it. We've shown over the last month or two that we're capable of playing better football – but that doesn't count here anymore."

Johnson, Hardie and Short confirmed for T20I debuts against South Africa

Three new caps headline a brand-new Australia T20 XI under new captain Mitchell Marsh

Head: Hope Johnson can be a match-winner like Starc for us

Australia have confirmed three debutants for the opening T20I against South Africa in Durban with Spencer Johnson, Aaron Hardie and Matt Short all set to play their first international match under new captain Mitchell Marsh.Australia named their XI for the first of three T20Is on Wednesday with Johnson, Hardie and Short headlining a completely new-look side to the last T20I side that played for Australia in the home T20 World Cup in October last year.David Warner, Cameron Green and Josh Hazlewood, who all played in Australia’s last T20I, are being rested ahead of the ODI series while Steven Smith, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are all injured although Starc was dropped for the final match of last year’s World Cup.Related

Marsh excited to unfurl Johnson and Sangha in South Africa

Long-time T20 captain Aaron Finch has retired meaning Short will open the batting with Travis Head, having done so together briefly at Adelaide Strikers in the BBL last season where Short was named player of the tournament. Smith was set to open in the series before he was ruled out with a wrist injury that he suffered during the Ashes.Johnson is likely to take the new ball as he was named among a four-man attack featuring long-term Australia understudies Sean Abbott and Nathan Ellis with Adam Zampa playing as the lone spinner. Marsh said he had been “blown away” by Johnson’s ability in the brief times he had seen him bowl.”We are excited to see a young man make his debut for Australia,” Marsh added when speaking on Tuesday. “He is a super talent. He bowls mid to high 140s and swings the ball. My only message for him is to make sure he enjoys it.”Hardie is slated to bat at No. 7 although most of his recent success for Perth Scorchers has come at No. 3. He may get an opportunity at No.3 later in the series as Australia look to use the games to experiment with just under 12 months to go before next year’s T20 World Cup. He is one of four all-round options Marsh has to make up the overs of the fifth bowler alongside himself, Marcus Stoinis and Short who can bowl handy offspin and has experience bowling in the powerplay.Josh Inglis will bat at No. 4 and be the wicketkeeper after Matthew Wade was initially not selected for the tour although he has flown in as cover for Maxwell. Wade remains in the selection frame for next year’s World Cup given his outstanding body of work in T20 cricket over the last two years but the selectors saw this tour as an opportunity for Inglis to take the gloves and bat in the middle order given his prowess against spin ahead of a T20 World Cup in the Caribbean.Tanveer Sangha, Matt Short, Aaron Hardie and Spencer Johnson have all been called up for the South Africa tour•Getty ImagesThe debuts of Johnson and Hardie in particular are a precursor to Australia’s planning ahead of the ODI series and the 50-over World Cup starting in October. While the formats are different, Johnson and Hardie are also in Australia’s squad for the ODIs in South Africa ahead of the World Cup, with Short heading home after the T20Is.Australia have a long injury list at the moment with Cummins (wrist), Smith (wrist), Starc (groin) and Maxwell (ankle) all unavailable for the South Africa ODI series. All four are expected to be fit for the India series that starts on September 22 but coach Andrew McDonald told on Tuesday that Johnson and Hardie had an opportunity to stake a claim for a berth in Australia’s final ODI World Cup 15 should any of those players fail to recover.”I think we’re far from settled just with the injury room at the moment,” McDonald said. “The information on all of them is they will be right for the World Cup which is positive but you never know obviously when you’re coming off injury. If there was a reoccurrence then that could shift our thinking a little bit.”Is this an audition potentially for spaces that may open up, in South Africa? There’s no doubt about that. We feel as though we’ve got some exciting talent coming through. You look at Aaron Hardie in that allrounder space, getting his opportunity. Spencer Johnson as well, a left-arm fast bowler. We’ve got some new players coming through and we feel as though it’s the right time for that as well to blend that youth with experience.”If anything were to move or shift on us, we’ve got that information from South Africa. It’s remiss of me not to mention Tanveer Sangha in that spinning department. He’s a young exciting legspinner. If something were to happen to Adam Zampa we’re hoping to get some game time into him in South Africa.”McDonald added Maxwell’s latest setback with his leg was slightly worrying given he has experienced similar soreness with his previously broken leg on his international return in the ODI series in India back in March.”It’s concerning,” McDonald said. “And the reason why it’s concerning is it’s happened a couple of times. If you remember back to the three-match series against India he played in the first one and pulled up a bit lame from that and then coming into camp for this one has had another small setback. There’s no doubt on the back of what was a horrendous injury that he suffered there’s always going to be a balance between the load that he can take on and unfortunately, he’s had a small setback here but we’re confident that he’ll be right for the World Cup.”McDonald is not leaving for South Africa until Wednesday having taken some extra time at home with Assistant coach Michael Di Venuto taking charge of Australia’s side for the T20 series.Australia’s XI: Matt Short, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh (capt), Josh Inglis (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, Aaron Hardie, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Spencer Johnson

Sodhi: 'Worked really hard on my run-up to bowl a fraction quicker'

Legspinner reveals he has been working on altering his run-up to ensure he can get the ball to skid while also trying to put his height to good use

Mohammad Isam24-Sep-2023After Ish Sodhi ripped out the Bangladesh batters in his first spell by claiming four wickets, captain Lockie Ferguson took him out of the attack after the 19th over. Once Sodhi returned for his second spell in the 30th over, he completed his maiden ODI five-wicket haul with a peach of a googly to dismiss Mahedi Hasan. It broke Bangladesh’s last recognisable batting pair to leave Mahmudullah to wage a lone battle as the hosts eventually fell short of the target by 86 runs in the second ODI. Sodhi later said that Hasan’s wicket was particularly “satisfying” as it embodied a type of delivery he had been imagining since he had reworked his run-up to bowl more at the stumps.”The most satisfying wicket actually was the fifth wicket,” Sodhi said. “Not necessarily because it was five wickets but I worked really hard on my run-up to bowl a fraction quicker compared to a year or two ago. That was the type of delivery that I was working hard towards. It was really pleasing to see that it got me a wicket.”Related

Sodhi revealed that he has been working on altering his run-up to ensure he could get the ball to skid while also trying to put his height to good use.”A lot of the really successful new-age legspinners are a lot shorter than what I am. They get the ball to skid to keep the stumps in play all the time. I thought that the bounce could play against me sometimes. One, they don’t actually hit the stumps.”Sometimes on slow wickets, I can sit in the wickets a little bit more. I was trying to add the skiddy sort of nature to my game by changing my run-up a year ago. Certainly not trying to neglect my height as well. I am trying to use it as much as I can,” he said.Given the lack of spinning tracks in New Zealand, Sodhi had to find ways to prepare and be successful and the changed run-up was one such way. Though he said it took him a bit of time to understand pitches in Bangladesh, he looked at home in Mirpur on Saturday.”In New Zealand, you might get a pitch that spins once every two years. You have to find different ways to be successful. If you can’t find those ways, it is easy to go for a lot of runs. Sit on the bench for a really long time.”So it is important to find other ways to be successful. I naturally find it difficult here. The type of balls that spin (here) don’t necessarily spin in New Zealand. Finding out what the stock ball looks like is really important,” he said.

“Sometimes on slow wickets, I can sit in the wickets a little bit more. I was trying to add the skiddy sort of nature to my game by changing my run-up a year ago”Ish Sodhi

By picking up a match-winning 6 for 39 against Bangladesh, Sodhi joined the likes of Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Shane Bond and Scott Styris among New Zealand bowlers to take six-wicket hauls in ODIs. He was also the first bowler to do so in Bangladesh.”I love legspin bowling. I love the fact that a lot of young legspinners are coming through in New Zealand. I think it is a product of all the legspinners in T20 cricket around the world. When I was growing up, I wanted to be like Shane Warne. Guys are exposed to so many different types of media now, you can see a lot of guys. They find something they really enjoy. Rashid Khan is playing a big role.”It is great to be in the company [of bowlers taking six-fors in ODIs]. I can hopefully produce some match-winning performances for New Zealand in the coming years,” he said.Sodhi felt New Zealand made the right decision to bat first to get to 254 – which proved enough at the end – even though they had initially thought of setting up a slightly bigger total.”The wicket definitely got tougher to bat later in the day,” he said. “It was the whole reason we decided to bat first. It definitely deteriorated over time and it turned out we took the right decision.”The batters coming in said that 270-280 might be a good score on this wicket. We lost a couple of wickets in the middle order so we felt 250 was a target. We fortunately got there in the end but you never feel it’s enough with someone like Tamim Iqbal, who can take the game away. Getting him out was an important part of the game.”

If this was the Netherlands of 2007, or perhaps even 2011, Sybrand Engelbrecht may have soaked in the satisfaction of notching up an important personal milestone – a maiden ODI half-century – in a World Cup fixture. But the class of 2023 thinks differently.Three nights after stunning South Africa in a sensational defence in Dharamsala, Netherlands appeared to have gone cold early on against Sri Lanka in Lucknow. Feet weren’t moving, wickets kept tumbling, the scoreboard appeared stalled and there was a sense of hopelessness to proceedings at 91 for 6. Teams of the past may have unravelled. Engelbrecht and Logan van Beek hit sprightly half-centuries in a 130-run stand that brought them back into the game and gave their bowlers a score to defend. It wasn’t to be, though, despite the best efforts of their spinners who had combined figures of 4 for 125 off 28.1 overs in a defence of 263; Aryan Dutt was particularly impressive with his offspin that brought him 3 for 44.”I must admit it’s still a bitter pill to swallow,” Engelbrecht said after Netherlands’ six-wicket loss to Sri Lanka in which he made 79. “Getting 260-odd after that start we thought it was a very competitive score. Maybe the pitch got a little bit better, but I thought they controlled the innings really well. And we just didn’t quite pitch up today with the ball, unfortunately. So, yeah, not the ideal result for us, but we’ll move forward and we’ll try and be better and learn from this as quickly as possible.”Engelbrecht was particularly effusive in his praise for van Beek, who struck his maiden half-century (59) on Saturday. His enterprise during their partnership helped take the pressure off Engelbrecht, who was the more industrious of the two.”I think a lot of credit needs to go to Logan, I thought he batted brilliantly, and we just tried take it as deep as possible,” he said. “We just told ourselves, if we can get to the last ten overs with six down, we’re giving ourselves a good chance.”So, for us, it really wasn’t necessarily about trying to accumulate runs. It was just about making sure that we got into positive positions and pick up the runs when we could. But to try and lay a bit of a foundation for us to start scoring a little bit more freely to the back end, which we managed to do. So, happy with the partnership.”Would they have taken 262 after all that?”At the halfway stage we thought we had a decent score,” Engelbrecht said. “I don’t think we would have taken it necessarily. I think, you know, the pitch definitely got better as the day went on, but I mean, I spoke to Max [O’Dowd] about it as well, and there was still consistently something in the pitch if we bowled the right areas. And I just thought we didn’t string enough good balls together for long enough to put the Sri Lanka team under pressure.”In recent times, Sri Lanka have been a bit of a bogey team for the Netherlands. Twice at the World Cup Qualifiers in June, they fell short, including in the final. In both games, Netherlands were more than in with a shout at the halfway mark but collapsed at the first sign of spin. Which is why their revival on Saturday feels like a vindication of the work they’ve put in behind the scenes, including a long pre-World Cup camp in Bengaluru to acclimatise to different surfaces and conditions.Sybrand Engelbrecht brought up his first ODI half-century•AFP/Getty Images”We were very confident in the growth that we’ve shown as a team over the last 6-12 months,” Engelbrecht said. “We’re a better team now than we were when we played them at the Qualifier and we thought that if we stick to our processes, if we implement our plans and execute well for long enough, we stood a really good chance. And I think there were periods in the game that you could definitely see that. So, credit goes to them. They played well. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t string it together for long enough.”At a personal level, Engelbrecht has had to grapple with challenges, like several others in the team, of working a day job and balancing cricket on the sidelines. In the highest level of club cricket back in Netherlands, Engelbrecht has been a heavy scorer for Voorburg Cricket Club, who he helped steer to three straight finals.Engelbrecht said he hadn’t made too many adjustments to his game coming into the World Cup. It’s understandable too, considering he didn’t think he even stood a chance of playing in the tournament and only came into the system after the Qualifiers in June-July.”I haven’t made a lot of adjustments,” he said. “I’ve tried to keep it as simple as possible. I think when you do make the step up from club cricket in the Netherlands, you could maybe sometimes think, ‘oh wow, I need to do so much more, you know, things differently.'”But the reality is, in our changing room we’ve got really good cricketers and we just need to back ourselves and our processes and stick to our plans. So, nothing really changed, it’s just trying to be as clear as possible and to watch the ball as closely as possible. So, I’m happy that it came off for me personally today, but as I said, we’ve got really, really good cricketers in our changing room and it will show as we go along.”

Spain netted six goals in a European Championship match for the first time, with Barcelona superstar Alexia Putellas bookending the scoring for La Roja to make it three for her in the tournament so far.

Belgium immediatley cancelled out Putellas' 22nd minute opener through Justine Vanhaevermaet, before Irene Paredes restored Spain's lead with a header in the closing stage of the first half. Hannah Eurlings brought Belgium back into it for a second time soon after the restart, only for Spain to run away with it. Goals from Esther Gonzalez, Mariona Caldentey, Claudia Pina – the pick of the goals from the edge of the box, and Putellas again all contributed to what was eventually a really one-sided win and another big statement.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE MVP

Three years later than expected, two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas is having the Euros she was supposed to in 2022, tearing an ACL on the eve of the tournament back then. She still wasn’t fully herself when Spain won the World Cup a year later, but is now making up for lost time on the international stage. With current Ballon d’Or holder Aitana Bonmati still not starting games – she was a half-time substitute in this one – having Putellas singing is not a bad trade-off.

THE BIG LOSER

Spain's defence is a clear weak point for the reigning world champions. Their opening 5-0 win over Portugal was a first clean sheet in a competitive fixture since the Olympic group stage 12 months ago. They conceded at least once in every UEFA Nations League game earlier this year and that 'normal service' resumed here. If an opponent is defensively strong enough to keep them out at the other end – which is admittedly a big 'if' – they are potentially vulnerable.

S Sudarshanan21-Nov-2023Dwayne Bravo has hit out at West Indies selectors, saying that “the system failed again” after his brother Darren Bravo was excluded from the ODI squad against England.”When will the BS [sic] stop?! I’m not surprised by my brother’s non-selection, but with the recent changes in WI cricket management, I held onto a bit of hope for the better,” Dwayne posted on Instagram. “This is NOT acceptable, and I just can’t make sense of it! So here are my burning questions: What’s the criteria for West Indies team selection? Surely, it can’t be solely based on performance?”Darren was the leading run-scorer in the Super50 Cup 2023 that concluded earlier this month and captained Trinidad & Tobago to the title. He scored 416 runs in the competition at an average of 83.20 and a strike rate of 92.03, batting at No. 3, and was one of the two players with over 400 runs in the competition. Bravo also was among the leading run-scorers for Trinidad & Tobago last season in the 50-over competition with 240 runs at an average of 48 and a strike rate of 76.92.Following the squad announcement on Monday, West Indies’ lead selector Desmond Haynes indicated Darren, 34, had been left out to give opportunities to younger players keeping the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.”It was a very tough decision for us to make as a panel,” Haynes said of Darren’s omission. “Darren has proven, not only this year but last year as well in the Super50 tournament, to be somebody who has performed well at this level. But we have invested in players like Alick Athanaze and Keacy Carty.”We also had to take into consideration that the World Cup 2027 is something that we have got in mind. We believe that we have invested in these players, and we need to give the opportunity to play against a very strong England side. That is the reason why Darren has been omitted.”Dwayne accused the selection panel of “mistreatment” and “disrespect” towards players.”I usually stay away from these discussions, but the mistreatment, disrespect, and dishonesty towards players over the years demand a voice. When will it stop?” he wrote.”To Mr. Desmond Haynes, your statement didn’t surprise me. It feels like another former player singing for his supper. I hoped for trust in the system with figures like you, Sammy, and the new director of cricket, but the system failed again. To my brother, this too shall pass. Keep your head up, stay focused, and trust in the Almighty.”While Darren was excluded, Kjorn Ottley, 33, was picked for the first time since 2021 as a back-up opener after Justin Greaves was ruled out with injury. Ottley made his ODI debut in Bangladesh in January 2021 and scored 25 across two games before being left out. But he put in a strong performance in the Super50 Cup this year with 317 runs while opening the batting. Only Greaves and Darren had scored more runs than Ottley this season.”You got to look at the roles that you want the player to play,” Haynes said. “Kjorn Ottley was included in the team as we had an injury to Justin Greaves. We thought we wanted somebody to bat up front and that’s the reason why Ottley got picked.”It is also important to have people playing in our domestic season and doing well. We keep saying all the time, our pool is not that big. I also mentioned about investing in young players like Athanaze, Keacy Carty. If we do the knee-jerk reaction where we just decided to invest in guys one year and then get rid of them next year, I am not too sure if that’s good for the development.”Hayden Walsh topped the bowling charts in the Super50 Cup 2023•AFP/Getty ImagesHaynes: Hayden Walsh was very close to selection
After unimpressive outings in ODIs against India at home and Pakistan away as well as the T20Is against New Zealand at home last year, legspinner Hayden Walsh Jr was left out of the West Indies side and was not selected for the T20 World Cup in Australia. Ahead of the CPL 2023, he switched from Barbados Royals to Jamaica Tallawahs, but played just two matches. After he was dropped last year, Haynes said he had asked him to look at his bowling footage in order to work on his shortcomings.”Last season I was the first to go to Hayden when he lost his confidence and I suggested ‘get a camera to look at you, where you are bowling’,” Haynes said. “I thought at the time he was not bowling well and need some assistance from the outside just to have a look at him.”This year I can tell you that I am very impressed with the way the ball was coming out of Hayden in this competition. We even made the suggestion to the West Indies Cricket Board to have Hayden in the 16 and he is going to be in Antigua for the camp.”Walsh returned to form with both bat and ball in the Super50 Cup bagging 20 wickets – joint-most in the tournament with Sunil Narine – and scoring 222 runs with two fifties and a strike rate of 100.45. Against West Indies Academy, he came in with Leeward Islands at 157 for 6 and scored an unbeaten 60 off 55 to lift them to 239. He then picked up five wickets to help his side win by 66 runs.Related

His second fifty came in a similarly tough situation in the semi-final against Barbados. Walsh scored 57 off just 45 to help Leeward Islands recover from 179 for 6 to post 290.”We were very impressed with Hayden,” Haynes said. “He used to be a two-dimensional player. He batted very well for Leeward Islands, came in at some crucial times and gave Leeward Islands a really good partnership and get them some good runs. We were very impressed with his batting as well.”Hayden was very close to selection, and I am happy he has got back his form. He is bowling well and is always going to be in our plans.”Haynes also said that he was told Jason Holder “is involved only in T20 and Tests” and is not available for ODIs.
