Leeds Told To Start £65k-p/w Winger With Willy Gnonto

Presenter and YouTuber Conor McGilligan has urged Leeds United to start both Wilfried Gnonto and Luis Sinisterra in their upcoming game.

What's the latest Leeds team news?

The Whites play host to Leicester City in the Premier League tonight at Elland Road in a hugely important clash at the bottom of the table.

Leeds sit 16th in the division, one point and one place above the Foxes – who are only out of the relegation zone thanks to goal difference.

Manager Javi Gracia may have some selection headaches at the back, with defenders Liam Cooper and Max Wober both doubtful. Perhaps, then, this could tempt him to put all the emphasis on his attack instead.

McGilligan certainly seems to think that this could be the way forward as he urged the Spaniard to put wingers Gnonto and Sinisterra into the starting lineup for Tuesday night.

While speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, he explained: “When Javi Gracia isn't picking Willy Gnonto, you are literally… If you’re Man City, you're not picking early in Erling Haaland or Kevin de Bruyne; if you're Arsenal, you're not picking Saka; if you're Liverpool, you're not picking Salah.

"Willy Gnonto is Leeds United's probably most explosive and ruthless player. I think technically, Sinisterra is probably the pick of the bunch.

"But when you're looking at someone who can make an impact, having Willy Gnonto and having Sinisterra on the pitch at the same time – providing that they're working back and helping the already tragic full-backs that we have – surely is the way forward.

"Leeds have got to go for bust, everyone. I said it on my stream yesterday, they have got to go for bust. It's done now, it's done. If we don't win this game, we're down."

Who should start for Leeds against Leicester?

It seems as though their opponents could be handed a major boost, too, with James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Jamie Vardy all in line to be fit for this game amid recent injury concerns (via LeicestershireLive).

With that being the case, it would be bold to fight fire with fire and opt to play with a really attacking lineup. Even so, there is certainly a case to have Gnonto and Sinisterra on the pitch simultaneously.

Premier League, Leeds United, Leeds United analysis, Leeds United team news, LUFC news, LUFC update, LUFC analysis, LUFC team news, Wilfried Gnonto, Javi Gracia

After all, when you look at WhoScored, only Jack Harrison has a better average match rating among the team's wingers in the league this season – though he has played 2,270 minutes of action while the others have played far less – with Gnonto on 1,121 mins and Sinisterra at 843.

Reported £65k-per-week winger Sinisterra has four goals in this time, while Gnonto has two plus three assists. So it's clear they add firepower – but it remains unclear if Gracia will, or indeed should, trust them both in such a big game.

Tottenham: Spurs Offer "Will Arrive" For "Stellar" Signing

Tottenham Hotspur will make an offer to sign Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret, and there has already been an approach behind-the-scenes.

Who could Spurs sign to replace Lloris?

Spurs number one Hugo Lloris is slowly heading into the final season of his contract, prompting chairman Daniel Levy and club chiefs to weigh future replacements for the France international.

The 36-year-old, who signed for Tottenham over 10 years ago in a deal from Lyon, has been an ever-faithful servant between the sticks – making 446 appearances for the north Londoners in all competitions.

However, as he enters the twilight phase of his career, Spurs simply must look beyond Lloris and there have even been concerns over the star's form this season.

In terms of who Spurs could sign to succeed Lloris, there have been links to the likes of Brentford goalkeeper David Raya, Leeds United's Illan Meslier and Valencia shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Meret is also among the keepers who could be targeted by Tottenham, with a report by La Repubblica (via Area Napoli) sharing the latest on their pursuit.

According to the Italian newspaper, an offer 'will arrive' for the 26-year-old who has been one of the 'protagonists' of Napoli's title-chasing season. Tottenham have already made a behind-scenes approach for Meret, asking for information on the player.

After this contact, Napoli asked for more time to consider Meret's future – postponing discussions until the end of this Serie A campaign.

Now, there are apparently two possibilities – either Napoli's keeper extends his deal at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium or Luciano Spalletti's side 'evaluate' every offer.

Should Tottenham sign Meret?

As per WhoScored, only Giovanni Di Lorenzo has featured over more Italian top flight minutes than Meret, highlighting just how crucial he is for Spalletti's side.

He has been consistently billed as one of the club's shining lights this season and is about to make history as a member of Napoli's first title-winning squad in over 30 years.

Meret has also been showered with praise by members of the media in recent years, with journalist Roberto Rojas calling him a 'stellar goalkeeper' for his efforts.

The shot-stopper has also been likened to Gianluigi Buffon by Udinese legend Antonio Di Natale, who said this to Radio Kiss Kiss (via SportStar) back in 2018:

"I saw him grow in all aspects, both technically and in terms of character. Napoli have secured a goalkeeper for the next 10 years. For me, he's the new Buffon."

£18k-p/w Rangers Man Set For Talks Over His Future

Journalist Pete O'Rourke has claimed that Rangers will sit down with Borna Barisic in the summer to discuss his future amid contract uncertainty.

What's the latest Rangers contract news?

When the season ends, the 30-year-old will enter into the final year of his current deal next season – with expires in May 2024 – and it remains unclear if he will remain at Ibrox beyond then.

Indeed, the player himself has gone on the record about not quite knowing what the next step in his career will look like. He admired as much when speaking recently with a Croatian newspaper (via Daily Record) explaining how things can "change in a day."

In full, he said: "In the summer, I enter the last year of my contract. I have a top relationship with everyone at Rangers. If I went to another club, I would choose the one that was just like Rangers. But you never know what could happen. The situation could change in a day."

By the sounds of it, though, the decision-makers within the Scottish Premiership outfit will at least take the time to discuss Barisic's future this summer.

Indeed, when speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, O'Rourke said: "I'm sure Rangers will sit down probably in the summer and discuss what they're going to do with Barisic and a number of other players."

Will Barisic sign a new contract with Rangers?

The Teddy Bears could be losing a collection of first-team stars at the end of the season with the likes of Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack and others all yet to commit beyond the summer (via Transfermarkt).

With that in mind, Michael Beale may be wary of too much disruption within the squad and may prefer to keep Barisic around. After all, the left-back has played regularly this term and hasn't often let his team down – with the 30-year-old earning a 7.33 average match rating in the league (via WhoScored).

However, in a recent report for the Daily Record, journalist Mark Pirie suggested that this summer could also be the right time to cash in on the £18k-p/w defender.

Rangers'BornaBarisicis shown a yellow card

He explained: "Borna Barisic and John Lundstram will be out of contract in the summer of 2024, and it could prove to be the right time to cash in on the duo. Barisic signed for Rangers for £2.2m from NK Osijek, and the club will be looking to make a profit on a player who has plenty of European football experience since agreeing the deal."

He certainly is a sellable asset if Rangers do want to make some money, but with plenty of other players potentially heading for an exit, it will be interesting to see if Barisic sticks around.

Sussex sign Wiese for Blast burst

ESPNcricinfo staff23-May-2016Sussex have agreed a short-term deal for South Africa allrounder David Wiese to appear in the NatWest T20 Blast. Wiese, who was part of his country’s World T20 campaign before joining Royal Challengers Bangalore for the IPL, will play two games for Sussex before the arrival of Mustafizur Rahman.Wiese has only played once so far in this year’s IPL but he has spoken to Sussex’s Chris Jordan, who was signed by RCB last month, about the opportunity to play at Hove. Tottenham: Spurs Set For "Most Exciting" Manager Talks

Tottenham Hotspur are set to hold a meeting with Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim as they keep up the hunt for Antonio Conte's replacement.

What's the latest Spurs manager news?

The Lilywhites are running out of time to make a permanent appointment with the all-important summer transfer window slowly approaching.

Spurs have just four games of the Premier League season remaining, and with Champions League football looking an outside possibility at best, Ryan Mason would perhaps settle for a Europa League place.

Whatever the case, whoever chairman Daniel Levy hires as manager will go a long way to both determining Tottenham's success next season and getting members of the fanbase back on the side.

Chaos currently engulfs the London club, with former assistant boss Cristian Stellini recently sacked after an humiliating 6-1 defeat at Newcastle.

Ruben Amorim encourages his Sporting CP side from the sidelines.

That result went some way to diminishing Spurs' hopes of a top four finish, and they're also without an out-and-out sporting director after Fabio Paratici resigned from his post.

Attention now turns to the appointment of a top class manager for next season, with news coming to light on Amorim from Portuguese source Record (via Sport Witness).

According to the newspaper, Spurs are set hold a meeting with the 38-year-old who is an exciting option, especially considering he is arguably one of Europe's most exciting young managers.

The meeting will presumably involve talks of some kind as chairman Daniel Levy now apparently draws a 'strict list' of contenders to replace Conte.

Amorim is reportedly one of them and this face-to-face will take place at the end of the season, with Sporting apparently admitting that both the manager and his agent, Raul Costa, will analyse all approaches made for him.

What could Amorim bring to Spurs?

Despite his young age, the tactician's CV is already very impressive – boasting five major honours to his name across spells at both Sporting and Braga in Portugal.

Indeed, Amorim also has the advantage of already being 'very close' with Tottenham defender Pedro Porro, with the pair working together at Sporting earlier this campaign.

Porro shined under Amorim as a key player and Spurs supporters will be hoping he could reinvigorate the Spaniard if their club do in fact appoint him.

Journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke has also been effusive in his praise of the Sporting coach in recent seasons, calling him 'the most exciting young manager' in European football last year.

Hampshire hope to motivate Carberry after post-England struggle

These are tough times for Hampshire and their coach, Dale Benkenstein, is trying to find a way to reinvigorate the season of Michael Carberry to aid a relegation fight

Freddie Wilde at the Ageas Bowl28-Jun-2016
ScorecardHampshire hope a move down the order can spark Michael Carberry’s form•Getty ImagesThere was a heavy sense of sadness about this, the flattest of days, at the Ageas Bowl. Played out in front of a smattering of barely 100 people, a crowd described by one seasoned journalist as the smallest he had seen here for at least a decade; bottom of the table, relegation-threatened Hampshire battled and blocked, nudged and nurdled and waited for the forecasted rain to fall.It is at times like these that a club needs its senior players. In Michael Carberry, Hampshire have one who stood up better than most to some of the fastest bowling in history when Mitchell Johnson ripped England apart in the 2013-14 Ashes. Shortly after that, perhaps harshly, Carberry’s international career came to an end and Dale Benkenstein, the Hampshire coach, revealed it has not been an easy adjustment for Carberry to make. This season season his average hovers around the mid-20s.As part of Hampshire’s attempt to re-motivate Carberry they have shifted him down the order to No. 4 to give him a new challenge and the management will have been pleased with the fight he showed, closing on an unbeaten 37, alongside Sean Ervine in a 52-run stand before play was halted.”We are trying to find some motivation for Carbs,” explained Benkenstein. “I think it’s tough when you don’t have England anymore. You just lose your oxygen. When you’ve had one thing as your goal and suddenly it goes, and you’ve never really thought about anything else – you’ve always wanted to play for England. I’ve seen that with a few senior players in my career as captain.””Physically and skill-wise he could play for many more years, but at this level you have got to have a real hunger to play. Especially as a batsman you have to have that hunger for runs because you are getting a year older and guys are getting faster and better and they have ambition to play for England and you tend to see guys drop off quite quickly.””We’ve found he is actually playing quite well but keeps getting out,” Benkenstein said of the move to bat him down the order. “The new ball is always tough in England and we thought maybe it’s a chance to free him up a bit and take him away from the new ball. Just changing his role gives him a bit of a mini-challenge and we are hoping that stimulates him.”Hampshire will hope Carberry can flourish in the second half of the season. Play began under a warming sun, but as the day wore on, the clouds thickened and darkened and like the looming threat of Hampshire’s relegation, they slowly closed in.When, at 3.18pm the umpires decided the light was too bad for play to continue Ervine and Carberry could hardly have left the pitch much quicker. Less than five minutes later it started to rain and the players never returned.More rain is forecast tomorrow and Hampshire could well escape this match with a draw but having been hoping for rain since mid-afternoon on day one, it will be with a heavy heart that they make the five hour drive to Chester-le-Street on Saturday. This pitch has been very slow, too slow to produce particularly intriguing cricket, and without the blanket of dark clouds under which they bowled on the first day, Somerset must have felt what it was like to bowl several overs in Hampshire’s shoes on day two as the hosts fought admirably against some accurate bowling.Unlike Somerset’s batsmen however, Hampshire’s were unable to convert strong starts into significant scores. All three of the wickets to fall were self-inflicted.Tom Alsop was the first to go when shortly before lunch he was caught at second slip having tried to cut a ball from Peter Trego that was too straight to do so to and angling in further still. Alsop’s wicket ended a stoic partnership of 89 – tellingly Hampshire’s best second-wicket stand of the season. That Alsop received a generous reception from Hampshire’s members for his 53 when he finally reached the pavilion, head bowed, bat hanging limply by his side and dragging along the turf, is perhaps emblematic of the club’s readjusted expectations. A good effort it was, but ultimately not good enough. After the interval Will Smith dragged on to Lewis Gregory and when Liam Dawson’s limp push outside off stump ended up in the hands of second slip there was a possibility Hampshire were not even going to beat the rain, let alone Somerset. After an hour of thick, miserly rain, with darkness enveloping the ground and puddles forming on the covers, the floodlights were unceremoniously switched off. Ten minutes after that, with the ground practically deserted but for a lone member of the ground staff, the PA system echoed around the stadium confirming to no one but the assembled press that play had been abandoned. And with that the lonely groundsman trudged across the outfield and disappeared into the bowels of the stadium, the only sound he left behind him was the gentle patter of rain on the covers as a melancholy day crept slowly towards its end.

Wolves Could Sign Neves Heir In £25m-rated Ace

Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a season of ups and downs this campaign, going from relegation candidates to safely in the middle of the table, Wolves will have a lot to reflect on this summer.

Things at Molineux improved following the appointment of Julen Lopetegui, who will have his first chance to rebuild his team inherited from Bruno Lage in the pending transfer window.

With safety from relegation confirmed, Wolves have two games remaining of the 2022/23 season to flex their potential, as shown by Lopetegui in yesterday’s defeat to Manchester United through starting Daniel Bentley.

The end of term is in sight, with clubs in the Premier League turning their attention slightly towards the transfer window, as managers seek to improve their squads through big-money business.

A number of players have already been linked with a potential move to Molineux, with one name – that of James McAtee – emerging as a newly promoted star from the Championship.

What’s the latest on James McAtee to Wolves?

Manchester City youngster James McAtee spent the season on loan at Sheffield United, gaining promotion with the Blades and building a lot of hype to his name with an impressive personal campaign.

The midfielder has subsequently been linked with a potential move away from City this summer, despite rumours of the current Premier League champions wanting to extend his contract.

According to the Daily Mail, Wolves are one of the clubs potentially interested in the £25m-rated 20-year-old, alongside the likes of Brighton, Aston Villa and Brentford.

What could James McAtee bring to Wolves?

The Salford-born midfielder registered 37 appearances in the Championship this season, with 21 of which being starts.

At just 20 years old the youngster averages a successful pass rate of 77% per game in the engine room, as well as 0.8 tackles per game, showing his efficiency in both pivotal areas of midfield – as per Sofascore.

Offensively, the midfielder has been “on fire” this season, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig. The Englishman has contributed to 12 goals in the Championship, assisting three and scoring nine himself, making him the club’s third-highest scorer this campaign.

The youngster could be a formidable signing for Wolves, especially with the future of Ruben Neves in doubt ahead of the transfer window. McAtee has both out-scored and assisted the Portuguese star this season, as well as proving to be more direct on the ball, averaging 3.89 progressive carries per 90 to Neves’ 0.85 – as per FBref.

The 20-year-old has impressed those in the Championship this campaign, as well as those at the top of the Premier League, with the manager of his parent club Pep Guardiola, expressing that he is “delighted” with the midfielder’s progression.

Only time will tell if Wolves can capture the signature of the budding talent that City are hopeful to keep with them, however, there is no denying that he is a hot prospect and could be the man to replace Neves' talismanic-like presence in the Old Gold's starting XI.

Aston Villa Transfers: Alemany To Target Own Kevin De Bruyne

Aston Villa have enjoyed a season of surprise under Unai Emery, who took charge of the club back in November in his return to the Premier League.

In just over six months in charge, the Spaniard has taken the Villans from being a team looming towards the bottom three, to one fully charged and two games away from confirming European football next season.

With their form and the pending added influence of FC Barcelona Director of Football Mateu Alemany, Villa are on the path to special things ahead.

Despite their success so far, Emery’s side are reportedly already looking towards the summer transfer window in order to strengthen at the end of the campaign, with several targets reportedly identified.

The 51-year-old has been linked with a number of his former players from LaLiga, and recent news has revealed yet another individual to follow this pattern.

What’s the latest on Giovani Lo Celso to Aston Villa?

As reported by renowned transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Villa are said to have “concrete interest” in Giovani Lo Celso.

Romano added that the player would be “keen” on the move, depending on the movements in the managerial role of his parent club Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The current Villarreal midfielder is contracted by the Lilywhites until 2025, with a market value in the region of €20.1m (£17m), as per FootballTransfers.

What can Giovani Lo Celso bring to Aston Villa?

The £100k-per-week midfielder, once praised by Emery as being “great” and “versatile”, has worked with the Spaniard on two occasions before, at both Paris Saint-Germain and Villareal.

At 27-years-old, the creative Argentinian has maintained an impressive Sofascore match rating of 7.10 in LaLiga this season, ranking him as the club’s third-highest performer.

Soccer Football – Europa Conference League – Group C – FK Austria Wien v Villarreal – Generali Arena, Vienna, Austria – October 13, 2022 FK Austria Wien’s Manfred Fischer in action with Villarreal’s Giovani Lo Celso REUTERS/Lisa Leutner

The attacking midfielder has contributed to four goals in 18 appearances this term, having assisted three and scored one goal so far.

Notable for his passing abilities, the Rosario-born playmaker averages a passing accuracy of 86% per game, as well as being strong in the middle of the park winning 58% of his ground duels (4.1 per game) – as per Sofascore.

The Argentinian maestro could offer a lot to Emery’s style, having worked under the Spaniard before, their relationship could continue at Villa Park with lots to offer in the squad’s midfield areas.

He has even been likened to Kevin De Bruyne in terms of statistical profile by FBref, the midfielder ranks in the top 1% of Europe’s top five leagues for expected assists, averaging 0.26 per 90. Lo Celso also ranks highly for progressive passes, averaging 7.70 per 90, placing him in the top 11% of those in his position.

In signing the 27-year-old, Alemany could land Emery his very own De Bruyne, given his ball-playing and pinpoint passing ability from a deeper-lying role, in what could be a move to inspire those already in Emery’s set up in the Midlands.

Also heralded as a “magnificent player” by Sevilla president Jose Castro, the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder could continue his impressive form under Emery at Villa Park in a reunion that would surely delight many at the club.

Chopra rejoins Essex on three-year deal

Varun Chopra, the England Lions batsman, has agreed a deal to return to Essex

George Dobell02-Aug-2016Varun Chopra, the England Lions batsman, has agreed a deal to return to Essex. Chopra, who is currently with Warwickshire, started his career with Essex and scored a century on Championship debut for the club as an 18-year-old. But he left in pursuit of more opportunities at the end of 2009 and has enjoyed seven largely successful seasons in Birmingham. He helped Warwickshire to the County Championship title in 2012 and was captain when they won the domestic T20 competition for the first time in 2014. He was the only man at the club to score 1000 runs in each Championship season between 2011 and 2013 and won a place in the Lions side as a result. He stepped down as captain before the 2016 season largely as he felt the responsibility was compromising his pursuit of an England place – aged 29, time is running out to achieve that ambition – and was replaced by Ian Bell. His relationship with the Warwickshire team management has sourced in recent times, however, and he has been left out of the white-ball sides for most of this season. The club confirmed a few weeks ago that they would not be offering him a new contract at the end of this season. He has now signed a three-year deal with Essex.”I am delighted to be rejoining Essex, a club where I have fond memories from the early stages of my career,” Chopra said. “I look forward to returning as a more developed player and being part of a talented, ambitious and exciting team led by Chris Silverwood.”As I enter a key stage in my career, I am intent on contributing in all formats of the game and in doing that, I hope to achieve my desire to play for England. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Warwickshire, the players and the fans at Edgbaston for their support over the past seven seasons.”While Warwickshire have suggested Chopra did not completely buy into their long-term plans for the club, the policy of leaving him out in limited-overs cricket has hindered their progress this season. In the one T20 match he played, Chopra made an unbeaten 97 – the highest score by a non-overseas player in Warwickshire’s T20 history – to help Birmingham Bears to victory, yet he was then omitted and the club failed to qualify for the quarter-finals.Chris Silverwood, Essex’s head coach, said: “We are delighted Varun is re-joining us and coming back to the club where he started his professional career. His Division One experience will be invaluable to our batting line-up and younger players. It is great to have an Essex man coming back to the club and he will be a great addition for us moving forward.”

Big Sam Must Abandon ‘Appalling’ Leeds Tactic

Sam Allardyce has not had long with the Leeds United squad but has already begun integrating new tactics to try and keep the Yorkshire outfit in the Premier League.

Last weekend's draw with Newcastle United saw the experienced Englishman utilise Sam Greenwood in midfield alongside natural centre-back Robin Koch and Weston McKennie.

However, perhaps the most unorthodox decision has seen Rasmus Kristensen feature as a centre-back in each of the last two fixtures, which is a mistake that Allardyce cannot repeat if Leeds are going to pick up the win needed to keep them in the Premier League this season.

How has Kristensen performed as a centre-back?

Considering Leeds' woeful defensive numbers under Javi Gracia, which saw them set a new unwanted record for most Premier League goals conceded in a calendar month, many fans will have been relieved to see the Whites ship just two in the away defeat against champions-elect Manchester City.

The Danish defender, who joined for £10m last summer, would earn a disappointing 6.4/10 rating from Sofascore for his performance that day, however, and it was something of a miracle that Erling Haaland didn't find the back of the net, as he spurned a number of chances to extend the Citizens' lead at the Etihad.

sam-allardyce-leeds-united-wilfried-gnonto

Kristensen's goal in the 2-2 defeat against Newcastle United last time out would arguably obscure another underwhelming display from the former RB Salzburg man, as he earned a 6.7/10 rating from Sofascore on that occasion.

However, this game would also see him register a woeful 63% pass accuracy, win none of his four ground duels and be dribbled past four times, which suggests that the Newcastle attackers well and truly had the better of him.

For context, the Denmark international has averaged a 67.4% pass accuracy and has been dribbled past 1.3 times on average per game in the top flight this season, indicating that he hasn't grown accustomed to his new centre-back role.

It seems a strange decision by Allardyce to trust Kristensen at centre-back given he has looked suspect defensively throughout the campaign, with Leeds journalist Leon Wobschall lamenting his "appalling defending" in the recent 6-1 home thrashing at the hands of Liverpool.

Leeds will find themselves up against two physical, in-form strikers in the shape of Michail Antonio and Harry Kane in each of their next two top-flight fixtures and with survival on the line, Allardyce must surely consider a more natural centre-back option such as Koch or Pascal Struijk. Indeed, this has been nothing short of a terrible experiment from the stand-in boss.
